The Revolution Will Be Digitized

Technology • Views: 3,677

The amazing thing about all the footage we’re seeing from Iran is that, in nearly every photo and every video clip, you can see people recording the scene with digital cameras and cell phones and camcorders. And then a lot of those people connect to the Internet and use web services like YouTube and Flickr and Brightcove to make their images and recordings available to the whole world, almost instantly.

When the regime’s thugs open fire on a crowd, the video hits the net within minutes. It’s more difficult for despots to do their dirty work when the world is watching.

The revolution will be digitized.

You can't hide this crap anymore. Seeing segregation on television in the 50s helped to spur the Civil Rights movement. We could see similar progress in Iran. At least, I hope we do.

That's why the internet is the new paradigm shift, it's the pamphleteering of the French Revolution updated, it's the invention of radio a hundred fold, it's the invention of the TV a thousand fold.

And like those mediums, governments and power that be will try to suppress it, control it, remove it or demean it.

Current top post balatarin.com (it's like Iranian Digg.com) is about Fire Department in west of Tehran saying from their speakers* that they are with the people. Regime establishments falling one by one. Hopefully police is next.

If this is true, it could be guns vs. Fire hoses and water cannon. The guns still win, but when the common Iranian sees his countrymen standing up... I'd like to think that's a gamechanger.

Technology can be controlled by sophisticated governments, however. The Chinese are the best example at the moment. Years ago, I met a lady who had run cyber-warfare for the U.S. Army in Serbia. She said the Serb hackers were very effective at disrupting our cyber operations.

I don't think so. The Chinese don't give a shit about how the world views them. They had the ability to crush a popular uprising and did it. The mullahs face the problem this week about if they are capable or willing to do what it takes. They don't really care about the world's opinion of them either.

It strikes me that maybe some people may be missing Mr. Johnson's cultural reference, which is quite apt.

The revolution will be digitized.

...is a riff on Gil Scot Heron's The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.

A short sample:

The revolution will not be televised.
The revolution will not be brought to you by Xerox
In 4 parts without commercial interruptions.
The revolution will not show you pictures of Nixon
blowing a bugle and leading a charge by John
Mitchell, General Abrams and Spiro Agnew to eat
hog maws confiscated from a Harlem sanctuary.
The revolution will not be televised.

Do not get me wrong: I hope beyond hope that this may turn into a kind of avalanche revolution. That if the regular army is called in they will refuse to shoot at kids and women and brothers and sisters. That someone has a strategy and tactic beyond tweeting and offering themselves as targets for the Basij. That a radio or teevee station or two get turned. That things can be sabotaged. That a few many mullahs get stripped and run naked through the streets of Qom. That truth and justice may prevail.

All of these things are now in the hands of the Iranians themselves. As JCM noted independently in a comment above. If you want to watch the opposition crumble, run to the Senate floor, the State Department podium, the White House lawn, and scream at the top of your lungs that the would-be revolutionaries (at this point, sadly, they're still just protesters) are our guys and we support them with our ever-effective empty platitudes and sternly worded memos. Watch, then, in horror as people who might support the uprising turn on the protesters as agents of the West. Watch the army choose sides in favor of a government they see as threatened from outside. Watch the mullahs go from scared beasts to bared teeth and authorize the use of any and all deadly force.

Then pat yourselves on the back for having made our leaders righteously spout off, writing checks with their mouths that their asses can't cash.

Or. Wait and see if the momentum can sustain itself, and choose your moment for jumping in when it may stand a chance of doing any good at all.

For tweeters, DOS hackers working against Iran's government web, people with links into Iran, that time has come. For a sitting president of the country against which the Iranians have been conditioned to shout "marg bar Amrika", not yet.

Now back to your regularly scheduled, mouth-foaming, impotent, infinite hatred of Obama. Sorry for the interruption.

I really hope the Israelis have a plan to use these uncertain times in iran as a cover for some sort of "plausibly deniable" mischief vis-a-vis iran's nuclear facilities. Not an overt military attack, of course. But some sort of precisely targeted sabotage. And I still feel that some sort of explosion at iran's only oil refinery would go a long way towards damaging the mullahs. And the Israelis could probably use their operatives in such a way that it looks like an entirely homegrown iranian action.

The idea of 'new' media being a game-changer for dictatorial governments isn't exactly new. I remember a Time magazine article from the '80's about how VHS camcorders and VCR's were bad news for regimes like this since the regime couldn't truly control the information flow anymore. The article cited a example of indigenous tribes in the Brazilian rain forest filming their meetings with government officials so they could hold the government to any promises it made. The difference this time is the SPEED that this can now take place. Minutes/hours instead of days and weeks.

At least 12 people may have died in violent clashes with Iran's security forces following President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election, according to reports from the country.

The reported fatalities have come amid a brutal crackdown on students, apparently aimed at quelling a wave of campus rebellions that authorities fear could spill over to the wider population...

If we can be blamed for -

+ emboldening terrorists by fighting them

and

+ emboldening the Mullahs by endorsing their opponents

Then

+ can't Obama be blamed for inciting racism by being President?

That is where the line of thinking takes you if you apply it fairly.

I don't buy it that fighting terror causes terror. And I don't buy it that we will reward the Mullahs by opposing them. And the racists who hate Obama hated him before they knew his name.

290 psyop  Mon, Jun 15, 2009 7:32:17pm

Something for all to keep in mind (especially those who feel the modern U.S. Armed Forces are evil thugs who rape and murder *cough MURTHA cough*) is that the technology to capture violence is available to the people throughout Iraq and Afghanistan.

Yet, despite 6+ years of opportunity, there is little damning evidence of the U.S. or any of its allies doing anything horrifically offensive. Whenever there has been even a small amount of culpability, those on our side that were found responsible have been held accountable and even thrown in jail in many circumstances.

The only things that survive to impugn the honor and professionalism of the U.S. Armed Forces and its allies are hearsay, ridiculous rumor, conspiracy theory, and laughable propaganda.

Seriously, for anyone who is still so ignorant as to believe that somehow evil "neocons" are somehow controlling the media and not allowing the "true story" to be revealed have conveniently forgotten foreign media such as Al Jazeera and MEMRI TV. The idea that these profoundly anti-western media outlets (and many others like them) would not air every piece of incriminating evidence is absurd beyond imagining.

The Basij are a legal group, officially a student union, and are legally under direct orders of the Revolutionary Guard. Their main raison d'être is to quell dissent. They are the ones who go and crack skulls, force people to participate in pro-regime demonstrations, and generally try to stop any demonstrations from even starting. They were the ones who first started the crackdown after the election, but it wasn't enough. While they are violent and repressive, they are still Persian and attacking fellow citizens. A beating is one thing, mass killings another.

- Another group was working with them, whose members are even more extreme, is Ansar. There is a lot of cross-membership between the Basij and Ansar, though not all are members of the other group and vice-versa. The vast majority of Ansar are Persians (either Basij or ex-military), though a lot of Arab recruits come from Lebanon and train with them under supervision of the Revolutionary Guard. They are not functioning under a legal umbrella, they are considered a vigilante group, but they pledge loyalty directly to the Supreme Leader and most people believe that they are under his control. They are currently helping the Basij to control the riots, but due to the fact that they are Persians and in lower numbers than the Basij, they are not that active.

They are the ones who speak Arabs and are unleashing the biggest level of violence on the Persians so far. Another wave arrived recently and there is chatter that yet another wave of Hizbullah reinforcements are coming in from Lebanon as we speak. According to Iranians on the ground, they are the ones riding motorcycles, beating men women and children indiscriminately and firing live ammunitions at students.

The Lebanese Hizbullah is a direct offshoot (and under direct control) of the Iranian Hizbullah (itself under direct control of the Supreme Leader) and cooperates closely with Ansar though Ansar occupies itself only with Iran's domestic policies, while Hizbullah occupies itself only with Iran's foreign policy unless there is a crisis like right now. However, Hizbullah has been called to stop violent riots in Iran in the past.

What will happen

Unless the army decides to intervene in the favor of the Council and to stop the early beginnings of the new Revolution, Ansar & Hizbullah members will be the ones doing the brunt of the killing and repression with Basij as a support while also protecting government buildings and try to do crowd control. The police seems to have for the most part disbanded in centers like Tehran according to all reports, including international media.

They are the ones who go and crack skulls, force people to participate in pro-regime demonstrations, and generally try to stop any demonstrations from even starting. They are located throughout the country, in every mosque, every university, every social club you can think of. They function in a way very similar to the brownshirts.

They were the ones who first started the crackdown after the election, but it wasn't enough. While they are violent and repressive, they are still Persian and attacking fellow citizens. A beating is one thing, mass killings another.

352 SteveC  Mon, Jun 15, 2009 7:44:13pm

Some more from Fark:

There is a major crackdown on students, especially those with connections to the outside world going on right now. Some people report that the students are fighting back in some areas. Telephones are being bugged and everyone twittering and sending videos outside of Iran are being rounded up. ISPs were shut down, government hackers are threatening people who twitter, and some of them have vanished in the last 24 hours.

Later, the people started to fight back. First, they took over and burned down a Basij base, killing its commander. Later, a Basij shot a young man in the face in front of their HQ, at which point a policeman went to confront them. The Basij beat the policeman, at which point students stormed the compound, throwing molotov cocktails, burning it to the ground. This is very big.

Tomorrow

Tomorrow, supporters of Moussavi have a manifestation planned for 5pm, Tehran time. Roughly the same number or more is expected to attend. Plenty of twitter chat about dressing in black.

The pro-Ahmadinejad crowd however are planning a counter-demonstration at the very same place the supporters are supposed to gather at 3pm. Most agree that basically they are simply going to gather for a confrontation. Basij from all over the country are moving to Tehran and supporters are being bused from all over the country.

A major showdown is expected to unfold

The revolution will be digitized.

That reminds me of the text I read (number of years ago), called: Millennium: A History of Our Last Thousand Years, by Felipe Fernandez-Armesto. Armesto did a "macro history" review...and he wrote about the 1979 Iranian Revolution. If I recall correctly, he linked the Revolution with the latest technological medium at the time...cassette tapes. The cassette tapes were smuggled into Tehran (from Paris, France), and the tapes were the sermons of Khomeini. Armesto detailed what happened during the Revolution (how it was begun by university students, how the students, etc., in the midst of the Revolution threw people from buildings, gunned down others in the streets, etc., etc.) Interesting how things transpire....The "revolutionaries" were all "idealists" or so they claimed...yeah, all "the young people." like Ahamdinejad...

[I] want to start off by being very clear that it is up to Iranians to make decisions about who Iran's leaders will be; that we respect Iranian sovereignty[.]

Barack Obama

In the coming months many of the leaders of the protest in Iran will be jailed for life or executed by the Mahmoud Ahmadinejad-Ali Khamenei regime. We will ask then of the president: do you respect Iran's sovereignty now?

It was accurate. Then Mousavi started talking loosening restrictions and improving the nation's image. At that point the theocracy couldn't trust him anymore. If this revolution succeeds, it will end up bigger than Mousavi.

I agree, and there will be far fewer MD's and RN's trained.

As a senior citizen, who also has Type II diabetic, I fear the future, if The One is allowed to submit a bill that Congress would pass. All I ask for is that Jane and John Q. Public be given the same health insurance that our tax $$$$$$$$$$$$$'s pay for, for Congress, etc. No more, no less.

We have the power to develop so many cures for a myriad of diseases, yet so much research is done abroad. With Obama in office? 'Yes, we can' has become 'Oh, no we can't'. Damn, I have 4 kids, 3 grandkids and daughters in law and a son in law. One granddaughter was a micro preemie, and has mild CP, but she does everything, after more surgeries than I can count. She will need eye surgery at a certain point, and to add to the pot? She has a genetic disease. She is a very bright, very sweet 9 year old, and most of her surgeries were done at Special Surgery in Manhattan...what will happen to my personal hero? And my kids, etc.? NY Grampa is also a Type II. I am on insulin, and have to be for the rest of my life. I wonder what all the elderly in FL, who voted for The One, are thinking now?

'Socialized medicine'? Ha! Very unsocial non-care seems to fit the category better.

How did the most powerful nation on earth end up with this illiterate inarticulate buffoon as head of state ? He has nothing to say about one of the most significant developments in the middle east / asia / "muslim world" in decades.

Support Iran This Way

1. Print out a bunch of support photos or symbols and have a crowd hold them as protest signs. Take a snapshot of your crowd.

2. Send your crowd photos to Iran or put them on a flickr page for the Iranians to print out. They can use them in their demonstrations. Just seeing the pictures will give them a boost.

The only way a revolution can succeed nowadays is if the military sides with the people or if the government, seeing the writing on the wall, predicts that it cannot count on the military.

Napoleon gave the crowd in Paris a whiff of grapeshot, and it was all over. The Russian Army garrison in St. Petersburg went over to the revolution.

Saddam Hussein put down revolts by the Shia, who were by a wide margin the majority of Iraq. We stood by and watched. Not our fight, though we kind of hoped they'd win.

This unrest in Iran might topple the government, but history suggests that this is far from a sure thing. Let's not get our hopes up, and lets' not encourage young idealists to bet their lives that we'll come to their aid.

We won't.

I think we're lucky Ahmedinijad got elected again. The nuclear program with a scary face at the had has more chances of being stopped then when a so called reformist is in office. Hezbollah was funded by Chattami as well, and the Nuclear programs were advanced too.
