For the most part, the type of women who support Imafreakingmoron aren't allowed to protest unless allowed/ordered by their husbands or fathers.

Something about the old white haired guy with the towering scolding look at the young woman, but she's not necessarily scared by the look on her face. This could be the picture.

Amazing photos. I think my single favorite is the guy coming back at the pro-regime riot cop thug, raising a baton, walking right into a cloud of pepper spray. That's the spirit! May the pro-freedom forces prevail.

Excellent photos. I was somewhat taken aback at the assisstance offered a policeman by pro-Mousavi supporters. #29. That may go a long ways toward changing the minds of a few police.
I'll know the situation will reach a critical point when the demonstrations turn from pro-Mousavi to anti-mullah.

I was just looking at these a little while ago- just amazing pictures. The bravery and daring of these people is inspiring. Perhaps that's why the protests seem to be gaining in strength instead of waning- they are inspiring each other, and thank God for it.

Do not get fooled again - it's the CIA, Neocons, Zionists, Military Industrial Complex, Oil Corporations, Bankers, War Industry & CFR trying to make another color revolution in Iran and install another American puppet like USA/UK installed the Shah of Iran by overthrowing Democracy and the Democratically Elected Dr. Mossadegh of Iran- just as USA/UK did in post-USSR countries like Ukraine Georgia Uzbekistan etc

But when they were offered even a limited choice, such as Mousavi, they chose him as the best option available. This election means something! It shows that the Iranian people want to have their voices heard. They don't want Dinner Jacket! The Iranian people want what just about every other people want, representative government, national interests represented, and a semblance of morality with modern technology. It's contradictory, but it's just like us. We should stand behind them as a people, just like them. Our prez, on the other hand, should be cautious. 211 itellu3times  Mon, Jun 15, 2009 9:26:22pm

On the positive side of the ledger today, I was listening to NPR (!?) about Pakistan, and their battle against the Taliban. Story goes like this. Army roles into the area, sets up an artillery base and starts shelling the Taliban training center 10 miles away. As the report gently put it, "artillery is not a precision weapon" especially at that distance, and the next day they visit the town, and the target is destroyed, and a large part of the town.

In the next village over, the people formed a militia and chased out the Taliban on their own. Didn't want their town destroyed by the army.

Nuff said.

I count this as positive on several points. First, that the organized and westernized Pakistani government is holding on and winning. Second, that they are doing so in such a way as to motivate (harumph) the people to act in their own enlightened self interest.

This is good news.

(And I don't doubt that the Pakistani army is getting major assistance from the US)

pathetic.

Considering the current leaders of Iran despise everything Code Pink and their ilk stand for, the hypocrisy is amazing. The one they demonize, GWB, is closer to their goals than anything one of those old fart mullahs or Dinnerjacket would ever give them. The BDS was/is so strong in their little pea brains that they stand there with people that hate their guts because it might make Bush look bad. Dennis Ross, Out As Special Envoy To Iran; Was He Ousted Because He's A Jew Or A Bit Hawkish On Nukes?

The news that Dennis Ross, long time State Department strategist and peace processor, is being bounced as special envoy to Iran comes from an article by Barak Ravid in the reliable (at least on these matters) Ha'aretz. The story seems to assume that Ross was declared persona non grata by Tehran either because he was a Jew or because he believes that Iran should not be permitted to acquire nuclear weapons. If the Obama administration so readily capitulated to Dr. Ahmadinejad's masters or minions, there's another reason to be worried about its seriousness in this very serious encounter between antagonists. No, we are actually enemies.

To have crumbled precisely while the regime of the ayatollahs is facing a real crisis of confidence at home and something of a challenge to its legitimacy abroad is, well, just that: crumbling. It certainly does not testify to American resilience, even diplomatically. My instinct here is that the president and Mrs. Clinton are so eager to engage--engage even for its own sake--that they'll do anything to please the other. This does not come as a result of analysis. It is, I am sorry to say, a predicated formula. ...

As I suggested in an earlier thread, I believe that the administration not only made its peace with the idea of a nuclear Iran, but wants one, to use as a threat against Israel to force Israel to accede to its vision of a "Palestinian" state in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem. The administration, in my opinion, was planning to guarantee Israel's safety from Iranian bombs--if Israel acceded to the administration's demands.

I believe the administration's low-key response is prompted in large part to preserve its ability to pursue this scenario with whatever side emerges victorious in Iran.

Well, buzz, I hope you're wrong, but fear you may be right. The number one priority for this administration seems to be the establishment of a Palestinian State, either alongside side Israel, or, if necessary, as a replacement for Israel.

This situation will get out of control, albeit briefly, once the military actively sides with the revolution.

Assuming they side with the protesters. If they side with Dinnerjacket, the protesters will be mowed down. Even worse would be if the military fragments and starts fighting itself. That could turn into governmental collapse very quickly.

re: #282 buzzsawmonkey

I hope I'm wrong too, but think about it; wouldn't bowing to Iran's nuclear ambitions, using the Iranian threat to arm-twist Israel into concessions to the Arabs, etc., appear logical to Obama, and the people he has around him? To them, it would look like a two-fer; give the Arabs the state they wrongly believe the Arabs want, cozy up to Iran, show "evenhandedness," and simultaneously be able to say they were protecting Israel while forcing Israel into its most humiliating vassalage yet.

If one is so dimwitted as to not understand that the Arab objective is to eliminate Israel rather than live in peace with it, it seems like a logical course of action.

There is little doubt that the Obama Administration has already accepted a nuclear-armed Iran. There is no longer any pretense that such an outcome is unacceptable to the US.

Something to think about...

Washington DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. The violinist played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, approximately 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

Four minutes later, the violinist received his first dollar. A woman threw the money in the till and, without stopping, continued to walk.

Six minutes after that, a young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

Ten minutes later, a 3-year-old boy stopped to look at the violinist, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced them to move on.

Forty-five minutes later the musician played. Only six people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 people gave him money, but continued to walk their normal pace.

He collected $32.00.

One hour later he finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the finest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars.

Two days before Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.00 each.

This is a real story.

Joshua Bell playing incognito in the Metro Station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities.

The questions raised:

In a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?
Do we stop to appreciate it?
Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the finest musicians in the world playing some of the most beautiful music ever written with one of the most magnificent instruments ever created, how many other things are we missing?

True.

I'm merely suggesting a reason why the administration might regard a nuclear Iran in a positive policy light, rather than merely as something one must grin and bear. And it does not make me at all happy.

Pre-Carter, American Middle-East foreign policy had three pillars: Israel, Iran, and Turkey. Once Carter wrecked is special brand of havoc, the US was left with Israel and Turkey, both to counter the radicalization of the Arabs and as a counter to Iran. Colin Powell's ineptitude lead to Turkey leaving the pro-Western alliance. Israel emerged as the only ally of the West in the Middle East. And now, we have an administration which wishes to destroy that alliance with some mystical belief that the Ummah will be America's new ally.
Pitiful.

Storming Evin prison could release Baha'is imprisoned there for their faith...

The problem with storming Evin is that the guards are Achmadinajad supporters and many of them will have shotguns, SMGs, or Assault Rifles. Storming a fortified building controlled by close-combat armed fanatics requires more than a civilian crowd could muster. Sad to say, the most likely result of such an attempt would be the protesters being repulsed with heavy casualties.

There's plenty of reactions.

Much of the network/cell infrastructure has either been heavily censored or crippled by DDoS attacks. People are using Twitter (of all things) behind proxies to organize and give first hand reports.

Good morning, Lizards!

This is a quick drive-by post on something I just heard on the BBC early morning TV.

Their reporter in Tehran said that:
* all international telephone lines and communications are suddenly working today ...;

* he speculated that the security forces couldn't cope with the huge mass of demonstrators yesterday, saying 'there simply aren't sufficient rubber bullets and police for this';

* he said the Mullahs are rattled by these demonstrations and are extremely worried and have now said that this result of the elections is not final! They have called in all the opposition leaders today - and, the correspondent says, it seems by no means certain that Ahmadinejad will get the nod by the Mullahs ...

re: #363 swamprat

Wonder if Google will make a special deal with Iran to supply internet with no mention of any citizen uprisings...Like they did with China.

Googles' corporate motto;

"Don't be evil /like how we are towards China."

Google (along with almost all of American businesses) don't operate in Iran, so can't be forced into anything.

In case of China, they took a pragmatic view. If they left the Chinese market, a government sanctioned search engine would have taken their place. Much much much more censorship. They stayed and at least this way Chinese people can still access a lot of "undesired" material.

Also they are a publicly traded company, so unless there's a regulation in place that says otherwise, they have to maximize shareholders' value or they can lose their jobs.

China is a vast market, and money is money, even if dirty.

And yes, "Do No Evil" is just an empty marketing scheme.

Not really. Letterman might lose his job over a joke about the Palin family's hypocritical morals. The odd thing is that if he'd been a black comedian or Jewish he probably could have kept his job. Old White men can't tell jokes anymore, it's kind of a bummer but everybody wants to be a victim. Seething works.

Over the Palin family's morals? I though he was in trouble because he made a vile joke about impregnating a 14 year old. David Letterman clearly wronged Sarah Palin and her daughters with his crude and lewd "humor". If he gets fired, he'll have no one to blame but himself.

How Ironic would that be.

Russian Tanks in Iran.

Which would give Russia control over more than half the world's oil supply outside the United States. The same people who just recently used another energy source - natural gas - as a weapon against Eastern European states it didn't care for, by cutting off the supply in mid-winter.

This is not a development to grin about.

Support Iran This Way

1. Print out a bunch of photos or symbols and have a bunch of people hold them as protest signs.

Use maybe 50 copies of this

photo or a version of the graphic in this

photo. The black-and-white logo will need to be redrawn, but will go through any copier cheaply.

2. Photo your crowd holding the signs in solidarity with Iran.

3. Send photos to Iran for them to print out. Make a flickr site for photos of international support.

Support from China, Africa, Los Angeles, would all have an impact...

Images should not use text. They must translate visually.

Send this idea to friends.

Here's my question... will the other guy really be better.

The fact that the mullah's were willing to rig an election to stop him is suggestive that he might actually be better, but i wonder if you could employ your internet sluthing to that question.

re: #28 solomonpanting

I'll know the situation will reach a critical point when the demonstrations turn from pro-Mousavi to anti-mullah.

As usual, the wise words of Soloman. While this spontanaity is awesome, it is only the first step. Soloman pointed out, and we should all remember who is really running Iran...the Mullahs. Mousavi would only be able to do so much anyway. Here's hoping the Iranian people go the full monty. prayers.

I've read a lot to indicate he WON'T be any better. Moussavi was connected to the founding of Hezbollah, and was (as printed in an Asia Times Online article) an "unvarnished hardliner" himself, just a couple of decades ago. He has recently remade his image to obtain a wider appeal.

I think many of his supporters probably have had the wool pulled over their eyes about him, or at the very least, there's a lot going on behind the scenes here (he's rumored to be a puppet of Rafsanjani) that we're not aware of yet.

Even so, I still sympathize with the Moussavi supporters. It'd be hard to be WORSE than Ahmadinejad.

498 Land Shark  Tue, Jun 16, 2009 7:26:32am

re: #494 A.W.

Excellent observation. After all, he was "Mullah Approved", otherwise he couldn't have run for office. However, I'm sure Ahmadinejad is their guy so they want to protect him and keep him in power since he's such a good lackey. Maybe the other guy isn't quite under their control like Ahmadinejad is.

I'm amazed by the quantity and quality of the pictures and videos we've seen coming out of Iran. Like Charles said in the previous thread, we're seeing the thugs at their worst in real time. I'm just surprised the regime wasn't able to stop all these pictures from coming out. Truly amazing.

I believe if the Iranian people can throw off the shackles of the Islamists, Iran will be a truly great nation. Combine freedom with the drive and resourcefulness of the Iranians and I think the sky's the limit for the Iranian nation.

499 BIGDUKE 6  Tue, Jun 16, 2009 9:27:58am

502 Call me Infidel  Tue, Jun 16, 2009 10:23:27am

My guess is that if the situation does spiral out of control the mullahs will have an escape plan. No doubt something unpleasant to divert attention away from isues at home. If you recall back in the 1980's Argentina was a bit of a mess and Galtieri thought it would be a good idea to invade the Falkland Islands. I suspect dinnerjacket has something similar in mind.

re: #145 Desert Dog

BARF...If Obama would start encouraging them right now...as hard as he can, THAT would be a help. What does he have to lose by doing that? The current leadership does not respond to anything he has done except for perhaps laughing their asses off because the USA is so pathetic now. Obama has done nothing but kiss the mullah's asses since he's been in. He wants to meet with them, without preconditions and justify and legitimize their unholy government. The Evil Bush and Cheney are the ones that put the heat on them all these years.

The last thing the protestors need is a U.S. endorsement.
That's hardly the road to increased legitmacy in Iran.

As Nick Burns, President Bush's former top negotiator
in Iran said this morning:

“President Ahmadinejad would like nothing better than to see a very aggressive series of statements by the United States that would try to put the U.S. in the center of this,” Burns said. “And I think President Obama is avoiding that quite rightly.”
