Meanwhile, a rumor was flying around today that Hamas had foiled a plot to assassinate Carter in Gaza.

Hamas has foiled an attempt by Palestinian militants to attack former U.S. president Jimmy Carter during his visit to the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian source told news agencies on Tuesday.

According to the source, militants linked with Al-Qaida planted two roadside bombs at a border crossing between Gaza and Israel with the intent of striking Carter’s vehicle on his way out of the coastal territory. Witnesses reported seeing Hamas forces patrolling near the Erez crossing and detonating the explosives.

Hamas Interior Ministry spokesman Ihab al-Rassin denied the reports, however, saying the group’s forces had engaged in routine activity and had no information of an assassination attempt.

Associates of the former president said they had received briefing on the matter, but would not elaborate on the matter.

I'm not sure I'd say that Hamas thwarted an assassination attempt, but someone did. Perhaps someone in Hamas got overly enthusiastic about killing Americans, even one that will bend over backwards to help Hamas while constraining Israel at every turn.

Or, it was some other terrorist group - there are a few operating in Gaza - that was operating without Hamas consent.

In any event, good that the bombs were discovered before Carter found out firsthand just what his friends really think of him.

Come to think of it, that's the kind of thing that Hizbullah would do to take pressure off the Iranian regime at the moment. Get the attention elsewhere so Iran's mullahs can reassert control.

Still, Carter's dancing with the devil in Gaza, and Hamas is busy saying that Carter's speaking on behalf of the Obama Administration. I'd say that someone better be asking tough questions of the Administration over that. There's quite a bit of bad jobu to go around.

An aside but of interest to us bloggers:

A Las Vegas newspaper says it has been served a federal grand jury subpoena seeking information about readers who posted comments on the paper's Web site.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Tuesday that its editor, Thomas Mitchell, plans to fight the request, which the newspaper received after reporting on a federal tax fraud case against business owner Robert Kahre.

The subpoena seeks the identities and personal information about people who posted comments on the story. The newspaper said prosecutors told the judge in the case that some comments hinted at acts of violence and the subpoena was issued out of concern for jurors' safety.

Mitchell said anonymous speech is "a fundamental and historic part of this country." The newspaper would consider cooperating if specific crimes or real threats were presented, he said.

An aside but of interest to us bloggers:

A Las Vegas newspaper says it has been served a federal grand jury subpoena seeking information about readers who posted comments on the paper's Web site.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Tuesday that its editor, Thomas Mitchell, plans to fight the request, which the newspaper received after reporting on a federal tax fraud case against business owner Robert Kahre.

The subpoena seeks the identities and personal information about people who posted comments on the story. The newspaper said prosecutors told the judge in the case that some comments hinted at acts of violence and the subpoena was issued out of concern for jurors' safety.

Mitchell said anonymous speech is "a fundamental and historic part of this country." The newspaper would consider cooperating if specific crimes or real threats were presented, he said.

Last month, Carter penned a remarkable op-ed piece for the New York Times, entitled "America Can Persuade Israel to Make a Just Peace." In it, he let it all hang out as an apologist for Arafat and a bulldog against Sharon. Before getting to that piece, however, we should be clear about just how attached to Arafat and his cause the ex-president is. As Brinkley writes in his book The Unfinished Presidency — about Carter's celebrated post-White House years — "there was no world leader Jimmy Carter was more eager to know than Yasir Arafat." The former president "felt certain affinities with the Palestinian: a tendency toward hyperactivity and a workaholic disposition..."

In their first meeting — held in 1990 — Carter boasted of his sternness toward Israel. For example, he said, "When I bring up the [PLO] charter, you should not be concerned that I am biased. I am much more harsh with the Israelis." Arafat, for his part, complained about the Reagan administration's alleged "betrayals." Rosalynn Carter, who was taking notes for her husband, interjected, "You don't have to convince us!" which, as Brinkley records, "elicited gales of laughter all round." The ex-president "agreed that the Reagan administration was not renowned as promise keepers" (this, to Arafat).
Shortly thereafter, Carter actually acted as PR adviser and speechwriter to Arafat. As Brinkley says, he "drafted on his home computer the strategy and wording for a generic speech Arafat was to deliver soon for Western ears . . ." I used to call Carter one of the worse Presidents ever, but the best ex-President of all time. Maybe I would still say that if he stuck to some of the genuinely good things he involves himself with such as Habitat for Humanity and other genuinely humanitarian causes, but since he has decided to involve himself in ME politics as an ex-President, all that went out the window.

Whenever he writes or speaks on the ME conflict, I am reminded of a lyric from the "Rolling Stones" song, "Sympathy for the Devil":

In the Byzantine world in which Jimmy Carter lives, up is down, black is white, good is evil. No one in American politics has taken a faster tumble in my regard or esteem than Jimmy Carter. Sadly, what makes him so very dangerous is that I actually believes the crap he spews. I don't see him as some vicious anti-Semite. In a way, I wish he were... it sounds odd, but he would be less dangerous that way. The fact that he believes that he is actually doing good is what makes him so very dangerous.

This gives Carter a wholly undeserved aura of gravitas and Wise Old Man credibility. So yes, he is paid attention to--even though he shouldn't be.

Brokered is too strong a word from what I understand. I believe "Catered" is closer to the truth. The agreement was going to happen with or without him, he just provided the venue and the food.

That's what I am thinking. Those nuts in the Middle East enjoy the attention they get from Carter, but he doesn't make them any more or less emboldened to their mission.

And, no, I don't think the "world" sees him as representing our government. People are not stupid, the world over has just as many sources of news and info that we have.

Most people know that he is an old man, who is very out of touch with reality, and he is certainly not some rallying point for ANY cause.

If he did, I would fear him less and the impact he could have against Israel in the court of public opinion in this country. The fact that I think he is so deluded into believing that he is doing good is what I feel makes him so dangerous.

I once read in the excellent book "On Killing" about a member of the US military who I believe was in an elite unit describe the world as being made up of sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs. I have thought about this and realized that there are many sheep who cannot tell the difference between the wolves and the sheepdogs because they are both canines. The sheep, who have been protected for so long from the wolves, start to sympathize with the wolves when they see the sheepdogs kicking the shit out of them.

Carter is a sheep who has lost the ability to discern the wolves from the sheepdogs.

I'm sorry, I can't believe he means well. I think he's an anti-semite who would love to see Israel disappear. He's a crazy old man, true, but even before the brain melt he was a hater.

I was asking the other day what in the world he thinks is going on? He saw the result of Hamas control in their experimental "country". Civil war. Death and destruction. Yet he supports them anyway, and has over decades. I really can't think he means well in this situation.

I keep getting a read from so many posters on this board, that you are so desperate for Barack Obama to be Jimmy Carter that if he turns out to be a great president, your head may in fact explode.

I'm not a member of the Carter fan club. I think he has given credibility to some very nasty characters around the world, but that doesn't make him a bad man, it simply makes him naive. He's a man of his time. And he was really never a man that was supposed to be the President of the United States, Richard Nixon simply made a president like that inevitable.

I can't understand the nationalist fervor on the right that makes conservatives take a knee jerk reactionary hatred for all of their political opponents. Either defeated opponents or ones that have defeated them.

Carter was supposed to make a good faith effort to get Gilad Shalit rescued. The only thing he managed was this: "I got the impression that Gilad Shalit is alive and well." Of course Carter's definition of "well" is suspect and open to interpretation. He then hurled the usual false accusations against Israel. All in all, another middle east failure for Jimmy Carter.

I'm not a member of the Carter fan club. I think he has given credibility to some very nasty characters around the world, but that doesn't make him a bad man, it simply makes him naive. He's a man of his time. And he was really never a man that was supposed to be the President of the United States, Richard Nixon simply made a president like that inevitable.

I can't understand the nationalist fervor on the right that makes conservatives take a knee jerk reactionary hatred for all of their political opponents. Either defeated opponents or ones that have defeated them.

I once read in the excellent book "On Killing" about a member of the US military who I believe was in an elite unit describe the world as being made up of sheep, wolves, and sheepdogs. I have thought about this and realized that there are many sheep who cannot tell the difference between the wolves and the sheepdogs because they are both canines. The sheep, who have been protected for so long from the wolves, start to sympathize with the wolves when they see the sheepdogs kicking the shit out of them.

Carter is a sheep who has lost the ability to discern the wolves from the sheepdogs.

Either way the expand government and spend more money we don't have routine has to go for him to be anything other than a disaster as president.

I think the hatred is mutual - if anything, the party out of power will be more angry and strident. And how could it not be that way? The parties are much more polarized than the 1950's for instance. Today we have the hottest of hotbutton issues that were nowhere on the political agenda then, abortion, gays, guns, religion. Not to mention, the internet. no one knew what a "talking point" was back then and how would you come up with them anyway, by mail?

Some know much, while most know nothing. It is these issues that drive the know-nothings.

The next day a woman was outside and heard: "Foo, Foo". Before she could react the "Foo" bird dropped a bomb landing a syrupy turd across her face. Shocked and panicked she ran into the river furiously washing her face of this sloppy stew. The village watched in horror as this woman also died once cleansed of the runny turd. The very next day a village wiseman heard those famous words: "Foo, Foo". He like others had witnessed the terrible deaths of two of his villages' people in the last two days. He too was struck right in the forehead by the "Foo" birds accurately guided turd missile. His first reaction was confusion and he sprinted towards the river. No matter what she and anyone else involved should be canned. He was satan-incarnate to lefties. Nothing he did was right. If he said the Earth orbits the sun, Lefties would embrace geocentrism.

My dislike of Obama is because he is a Marxist, no buts, end of story. If he was just a plain old democrat who was left on somethings but not far-left, I wouldn't really care, but Obama is not that guy. Reality might keep him from attempting to turn the US into the USSR over night, but believe me if he could do so, I believe he would do it.

I believe communism, socialism, collectivism, statism, are all basically evil. They are oppression and slavery disguised with a big pretty ribbon and bow to make us think it's something positive. At least tyrants in the past were open about being tyrants. There can be no freedom or liberties without freedom to keep what you produce and do with it as you will with minimal interference. Social freedoms mean nothing if you are crushed under a command economy. The significance of this spectacle is that efforts to win Russia’s cooperation in influencing Iran are doomed to failure. Russia’s tie to the Iranians exists at a deep, subliminal level. It is rooted in faith that a cowed or misled population can always be manipulated. This faith does not convince Russians that a nuclear bomb in Iranian hands is no danger. But it reassures them that it will inevitably be aimed at the West.

I believe communism, socialism, collectivism, statism, are all basically evil. They are oppression and slavery disguised with a big pretty ribbon and bow to make us think it's something positive. There are legitimate criticisms of both Palin and Clinton to be made, and people made them.
There was also a very ugly undertone to other commentary about each of them which reflected sexist and misogynistic attitudes. These can't be dismissed; they permeate the atmosphere.

Here are just two examples: On Palin, the relentless rumour-mongering about Trig's parenthood. If it wasn't being alleged that Palin wasn't Trig's mother, people were saying she couldn't possibly be both a good governor or veep AND a good mother.
On Clinton, the constant descriptions of her as witchlike, a hag, having a 'cackle', and comments about her unelectability "because no one wants to watch her getting older on national TV every day". (these were all made by 'serious journalists')

Not one of those should have been a topic for discussion; not one of those is about real political issues. All of those reflect some ugly attitudes and behaviour towards women in particular, because they are women.

Koskidz have been pretty good. PJM, instapundit, Hot Air had some coverage but too much of it was filtered through the prism of ODS instead of what's really happening on the ground.

What would you have the GOP do?
Sarah Palin did, and is is doing just fine.
Her message was, and is, clear & concise.
IMO, after all these months of reflection, and some lizard help BTW, McCain was the drag on the ticket, with much help from the economy.
When it was done, McCain didn't back Sarah against the attacks. We don't know why. We can only speculate.

It's a real shame, and, I think, indicative of the current GOP strategy overall. Instead of seeking to broaden the base, there's been a focussing on the hardcore base and an attempt to energize only them.

Same thing seems to be happening on the blogs; they're playing to the audience that has an endless appetite for conspiracy theories and ODS (their hardcore base) to the exclusion of pursuing news (which drives away people looking for news).

Even once formerly sane right people are doing it. Ed Morrissey is a good example; now he's a Malkin shill. Victor Davis Hanson has been playing up to the HotAir crowd more and more-- which is a shame because I think he could have some useful things to contribute.

I think part of it is not having work and part of it is allergies. And, being a teacher, I won't really know until next month or early August if I get hired by any of the schools. I've got applications at the local schools, our local library and with one of the community colleges in the area, and I'm exploring teaching private lessons again ( I can earn $40-50 an hour doing that, but it's not always steady work) I've also contacted the homeschool community to see if I could be useful as a certified teacher - especially since MD is much more stringent than other states about homeschooling.

I don't know many people here yet and things are still transitional as well as contingent on the sale of our home in NM. We are considering living in WV after the house sells, so it is hard to 'put down roots' as my instincts tell me to do when I move somewhere. I tend to get energized by being around people and an answer may be for me at the moment could be for me to do some volunteer work...maybe at a pregnancy center or the red cross or something so I don't go nuts.

Like I said, this is a transitional time, and those are not always easy.

songbird, I'm really sorry to hear about your difficulties. I have some friends who are teachers in other parts of the country, some of whom do the private tutoring thing for extra money, but as you say it's not steady or reliable work.

I was wondering-- have you looked into becoming an instructor for Kaplan or the Princeton Review, and teaching classes/offering private tutoring for kids trying to pass the SAT? Many of my friends do that and it's much better than private tutoring (in terms of having a reliable income). Also the companies will find clients for you, rather than you finding them on your own.

Depending on where in the country you are, it might be something to look into. So much pressure is on kids to do well on the SAT and parents are willing to sink a lot of money into these courses or private instruction. Just a thought.

It was on, on the morning of 9/11, and the warning sound for a bulletin woke me up...there are no words...they have since changed the sound, and it is not as easily heard.

The "slut" component confused me, prior the focus was rape, but i'm in the game now. Well it is a partisan issue, I think. If Letterman said this about Martha Stewart, for instance, what do you think the difference in attitudes would be? My opinion, only Martha Stewart fans would be thinking about this for more than two seconds. Not because its cool to say, but it is David Letterman. I wouldn't condone racial slurs, but when Paris Hilton (alledgedly) made them, I just couldn't get worked up on it. I'd say the same thing about Imus. It wasn't cool, but was it worth discussing? There are not more important things to threaten a boycott about? Were Al Sharpton's motivations pure when he went ballistic?

I feel a guilt in that we have lived in NY for most of our marriage, and I was an 'only'. I am from Boston, and it hurt my parents zt"l so much when we moved back to NY...I met my husband when I was a student nurse, in Brooklyn, where he is from. Ironically, he was drafted the day after he graduated from CCNY, and after Basic, at Ft. Dix, in NJ, he was stationed at the now-defunct Boston Army Base.

But they were a bit over 3 hours away.

And yes, there are times when it does feel like almost 447 years!

Actually, the word feminism has been co-opted and demonised so much that many people are afraid of it. In truth 'feminism' is just about humanism: it's about the still-radical idea that women are members of the class called human, and deserve all the same rights and protections as the class called 'male'. In large part feminism exists to combat the existent tendency to define men as the measure of all things.

I'd recommend The Mismeasure of Women by carol Tavris to everyone. It demonstrates how men have been taken as 'the measure of what is human' in science and medicine, and how that's been disseminated (so to speak) throughout everything.

I'm female. My earliest political convictions all arose out of the experience of being female. I read Susan Brownmillers "Against Our Will" when I was 15 and it changed my life. I helped my best friend get birth control when we were 13 and she'd already been having sex. I saw how people looked at her and treated her--and how she acted!-- simply because she developed so much more quickly than the average 13 year old.

I loved her and I was afraid for her so I read up on Planned Parenthood and Our Bodies Ourselves and helped her back then. I've always been a research geek. I knew all about birth control methods and the fight to control them long long before I'd ever need to know those things for myself, because of her. My early feminist convictions probably begin then.

And they began also when I was 12; all women come to terms around then with the terrifying power accorded to us by virtue of being female, and the bizarre attention accorded to us merely for being female.

People claim "feminism" is about getting equal rights for women, or about getting 'special' rights for women. It's not. "feminism' is just "humanism": the recognition that women are people, and that all persons, regardless of sex, race, creed, or sexual orientation, deserve equal rights by virtue of being human.

Well, I know you're a smart guy and I know you're cool, so I didn't think you would be making the kind of claim that statement seemed to indicate.

In lieu of you posting something concrete about the differences, I'll just note that

1) biological difference alone doesn't always entail differences in how we think or react
2) claims that "biology is destiny" have often been used as excuses for treating women as inferior.

I don't deny that we're different, but we have to be vigilant about how we use that language and the conclusions we draw from our differences.

Dude. If you want I'll go haul out the stats about salary inequities and inequities in certain jobs/fields.

And no, abortion is most certainly *not* primarily a religious issue. It's an issue about a woman's right to control her own body and her destiny.

BTW, there are also laws that more or less treat women as fetal containers: ordering them into prison if they're pregnant and an addict, or ordering them to undergo certain invasive medical procedures when pregnant. That is all a feminist issue.

No one is denying that the US in the 21st century is the best time and place to be female, ever. That doesn't mean all inequities have been dealt with.

Thanks for sharing your history and the journey you took to arrive at your conclusions regarding your personal feminist philosophy. I, too, cared about people at an early age and realized there was power to be 'had' as a thinker who challenged the status quo at every opportunity. As I matured (or got OLD, as some would write), I have to confess that I've changed a bit in an area or two. All in all, however, I am a champion for any who are oppressed or denied the right to live with the dignity they deserve.

Quick summation and you can have the last word if you're still on this dying thread: Throughout US history, women have had less rights than men, in some areas such as rights re: estates, back in the day, no rights. So I'd never deny that a feminist movment was crucial, etc..., but, I'd say the movement is completely dead - forget personal views on the need such, but as a practical matter. I've met very few woman over 30 who have any connection to feminism. And in college, for me early 90's to late nineties, very few in college. But getting back to the powers re: the sexes, is there anything a female in this day and age cannot get, due to gender? And of course, there is still some discrimination in certain areas, i.e., science, due to the heads being from an older generation and often of other cultures. And for other issues, like I said, abortion, are these feminist issues are religious/privacy/other type issues?

Thanks...he is an equal opportunity hater...but the fights he has started were with Jews, and also a non-Jewish female poster who we all adore. He may very well have a problem with women in general, as we seem to get far more hate from him than the male lizards, but his Jew hate was so vile one night that we were sure he would be banned...we are counting the days. I just hope that he is neither married or a father.

Speaking of the Ass-Sasination attempt, my bet is it was bogus, staged to gain more fawning from Carter. I am a Conservative that mostly votes Republican. I even ran for offices as a Republican. So I am naturally skeptical when asked to believe anything favoring Carter. During his successful campaign for the Presidency my next door neighbors held a dinner and fund-raiser at their home. I was invited, but did not attend because I had so little regard for the candidate.
All that aside, Carter has done some good public works, hammers and nails, so to speak, but he should butt out in world politics.
My view is that there simply has to be a two-state settlement in Israel/Gaza. The rest of the World would forever benefit. Lacking that, there will probably be an open exercise with nuclear devices.

Nah, didn't read the thread...

There are currently only two terrorist groups operational inside the Gaza Strip.

HAMAS and whichever of the many names that Palestinian Islamic Jihad is using currently. PIJ isn't really a group per say, it's more a collection of loosely affiliated cells, that are tightly allied with and fought alongside of HAMAS over the last two years. Both are heavily supported by Iran. Both sent terrorists into Iraq. Both are affiliated with Al-Q to a greater or lesser extent.

There are, or were, anywhere from a dozen or so, up to a couple of hundred smaller gangs operational inside Gaza as recently as 2007. Mostly family, clan, or criminal based, or all of the above.

HAMAS and its PIJ allies have been cracking down hard on those smaller groups that don't toe the HAMAS line for over two years now. In addition, more then a few of those smaller groups inside Gaza were overrun and demolished by the IDF just recently.

I haven't had a chance to read all the comments but this is so unfair! Debka was the first one to release the story because it was Israelis keeping watch over the border who saw the bombs being buried and who alerted authorities about it who then acted on the tip and found the bombs and then denied they were there and President Carter didn't even say thank you!
