Improvements in the LGF Spy:

  • The comment numbers are back, the comment numbers are back!
  • Comments now show the date and time of posting.
  • A navigation panel lets you move to next or previous threads in the Spy.
  • When a new article goes up, the navigation panel is automagically updated.

… and probably more I’ve forgotten to list. Here’s an open thread to test it out; click the green magnifying glass in the row of icons at bottom right of an article.

  • Comments do not necessarily reflect the views of Little Green Footballs.
  • Obscene, abusive, silly, or annoying remarks may be deleted, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their views by Little Green Footballs.
  • Posts that contain phone numbers, street addresses, email addresses or other personal information will also be deleted, as will posts that consist only of a variation on the word, "First!"
  • Comments that advocate violence will be cause for immediate banning with no appeal.
  • Disagreement and debate are welcome, but insults and abuse are not, and may cause your account to be blocked.
  • REMEMBER: posting comments at LGF is a privilege, not a right. Abuse that privilege, and your account will be blocked.

I haven't gotten the hang of commenting in spy yet. It goes too fast and I miss too much stuff. Maybe I'll warm up to it eventually. It took me forever to embrace the rating system.

What do the hamsters think of all this? Or have you hired some new ones?

Hey Lizards! It's raining again in the Very Far Western Suburbs of Chicagoland. Allergies are atrocious

I tried those once, I fell asleep 3 hours later. Was wide awake in the am for my exam tho --unlike everyone else who was just beginning to lose steam.

So, while I am typing a comment (which I don't do very often, I am pretty shy) I can watch other stuff happen? Is that the point.

I'm kind of like the Tom Hanks character in "Big"..."I don't get it."

28 karmic_inquisitor  Tue, Jun 16, 2009 6:51:27pm

Charles -

Great stuff - can we get the ability to add updings from spy? It will be a bit like playing space invaders as the comments fly through, but I am up for the challenge.

Had to laugh at two jay birds going after some bird seed I put out on the porch around noon. they must have been young ones as they were both in the little box and lone would start to squawk then the other one would. No not either one trying to chase the other away. Almost as good as some opera duet.

unconfirmed - several Generals have been arested - #Iranelection

I am not optimistic that anything all that much better will arise from the current protests in Iran.

That being said, I think it is a wonderful distraction for the regime, and if it manages to help delay the day when Iran gets nukes, somehow, anyhow, than it will be immensely worth it.

It's also possible that if the rumours of Arabs in the Basij are true, and the people manage to make any sort of impression on their future governance; Iranian projection of power in the Middle East will diminish.

Maybe that's just wishful thinking though.

Israeli intelligence chief says he's not optimistic, and that the riots are only happening in Tehran and a couple of other isolated areas (one other major city, as far as I have heard).

May be way wrong, but it's looking more and more like this is a revolt against the gov't per se, imho.

As the folks in the street sense they are gaining the upper hand they will want much more than a recount.

The East German street rebellion that ended communism started over a small matter of wanting elections opened to more than the single communist party candidates in places like Leipzig. The more the government reacted, the more the people demanded.

An older clip from Ahmadinejad, apparently at Qom when visiting Mesbah Yazdi* and his ilk: Part 1 , Part 2 (both in Farsi, maybe I'll subtitle them later)

He is talking about spreading Islam beyond Iran... We should use all our capabilities** to spread Islam... We should organize in howze [religious school] and universities to make ideology into practice... the world has a thirst for Islam... Time is short ... we should act ... we were not organized before, we didn't have a plan ... today we have found the capacity and sooner than you think things will happen with god's will and aid ...

Well, seems like he's a "man" of his word.

I wonder what's Obama gonna discuss with this guy? Perhaps surrender of western lands?!

Iranian soldiers are on the side of protestors; report by journalist Robert Fisk

t was interesting that the special forces - who normally take the side of Ahmadinejad's Basij militia - were there with clubs and sticks in their camouflage trousers and their purity white shirts and on this occasion the Iranian military kept them away from Mousavi's men and women.

In fact at one point, Mousavi's supporters were shouting 'thank you, thank you' to the soldiers.

One woman went up to the special forces men, who normally are very brutal with Mr Mousavi's supporters, and said 'can you protect us from the Basij?' He said 'with God's help'.

The game is changing. The Army is on the other side. Reports I read earlier (on twitter) said the Army had refused orders to shoot protesters.

You know, I've heard this long enough without it being disputed that I have come to believe it.

This needs to be shouted from the rooftops and not ignored.

To me it marks a radical coming out of the radical forces in the Middle East. It is impossible to ignore (for anyone who has still being trying to tow this line) Iran's connections to terror networks.

If Hizballah and Hamas are being called on by the dictators of Iran to be used a private army, it pulls the (very thin) veil off of the myth that they could possibly be operating alone, and it is Israeli/Zionist propaganda that tries linking Iran to them.

Of course, Fisk also says this:

[The protest] is absolutely not against the Islamic republic or the Islamic revolution.

It's clearly an Islamic protest against specifically the personality, the manner, the language of Ahmadinejad. They absolutely despise him but they do not hate or dislike the Islamic republic that they live in.

I hope THIS part is just Fisk's lefty reflex wishful thinking coming into play.
(Because the Iranian people shrugging off the "Islamic revolution" would seem too much like something the HATED BUSH would want.)

re: #301 Mich-again

Yes, but reports are the Army os protecting the protesters from the Basiji (Revolutionary Guard). I assuming the regular Army outnumbers the Basiji, especially since we're hearing they (Basiji) are having to import help..

And even if my heart is all a twitter

I must resist the urge to tweet
when dreams dreamt would be so sweet!
G'nite all!

If that's true, it's tragic. I was following @Change_for_Iran most of Sunday night.

My sense is the soldiers actually have quite a bit of common sense, and are more in "keep the peace" mode, than "let's turn against the dinner jacket and khomeini."

The fact that they won't countenance bloodshed of fellow citizens is not an indicator to me of a tidal shift towards change... more of a stabilizing measure actually.

Don't have a link really. Check on @persiankiwi on twitter. He's the one that orginally posted it apparently. I am using a third party twitter site called #hashtags to see whats going on. Sorry about that but best I can do at work.

re: #303 OldLineTexan

Is one of them a civilian national security force, equally funded and equipped compared to the army?

From Wiki..

The regular armed forces have an estimated 820,000 personnel: the Islamic Republic of Iran Army, 650,000 personnel; the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy, 70,000 personnel; and the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force, 100,000 airmen.

The Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution, or Revolutionary Guards, has an estimated 125,000 personnel in five branches: Its own Navy, Air Force, and Ground Forces; and the Quds Force (Special Forces)

And the Basij are the local yokels thugs that work for the Revolutionary Guards

I don't see that tweet there. The government is hacking services to spread disinformation. I think the proxy you are using might be compromised. Possibly to discourage people from tweeting info out of the country.
