Glimpses of Life’s Puzzling Origins (w/ Podcast)

Science • Views: 3,492

The New York Times Science section has a fascinating article on the current state of research into the origin of life on earth: New Glimpses of Life’s Puzzling Origins.

Some 3.9 billion years ago, a shift in the orbit of the Sun’s outer planets sent a surge of large comets and asteroids careening into the inner solar system. Their violent impacts gouged out the large craters still visible on the Moon’s face, heated Earth’s surface into molten rock and boiled off its oceans into an incandescent mist.

Yet rocks that formed on Earth 3.8 billion years ago, almost as soon as the bombardment had stopped, contain possible evidence of biological processes. If life can arise from inorganic matter so quickly and easily, why is it not abundant in the solar system and beyond? If biology is an inherent property of matter, why have chemists so far been unable to reconstruct life, or anything close to it, in the laboratory?

The origins of life on Earth bristle with puzzle and paradox. Which came first, the proteins of living cells or the genetic information that makes them? How could the metabolism of living things get started without an enclosing membrane to keep all the necessary chemicals together? But if life started inside a cell membrane, how did the necessary nutrients get in?

The questions may seem moot, since life did start somehow. But for the small group of researchers who insist on learning exactly how it started, frustration has abounded. Many once-promising leads have led only to years of wasted effort. Scientists as eminent as Francis Crick, the chief theorist of molecular biology, have quietly suggested that life may have formed elsewhere before seeding the planet, so hard does it seem to find a plausible explanation for its emergence on Earth.

In the last few years, however, four surprising advances have renewed confidence that a terrestrial explanation for life’s origins will eventually emerge.

Prebiotic chemists have long been at a loss to explain how the first living systems could have extracted just one kind of the handed chemicals from the mixtures on the early Earth. Left-handed nucleotides are a poison because they prevent right-handed nucleotides linking up in a chain to form nucleic acids like RNA or DNA. Dr. Joyce refers to the problem as “original syn,” referring to the chemist’s terms syn and anti for the structures in the handed forms.

The chemists have now been granted an unexpected absolution from their original syn problem. Researchers like Donna Blackmond of Imperial College London have discovered that a mixture of left-handed and right-handed molecules can be converted to just one form by cycles of freezing and melting.

Fascinating! This means climate change can be a good thing.

I think that the posthumous bowdlerization of Michelangelo's homoerotic poems -- done at the request of his daughter, if memory serves -- tends to confirm that the dude had a reputation for swinging that way in his own lifetime.

My daughter had a cat. I would tell her friends that it was a very obedient cat and that it would do exactly as I said. I would tell the cat "Act as though I don't exist. Ignore me completely" and unfailingly, the cat would obey.
My daughter would get embarrassed and say I was a dweeb.

With these four recent advances — Dr. Szostak’s protocells, self-replicating RNA, the natural synthesis of nucleotides, and an explanation for handedness — those who study the origin of life have much to be pleased about, despite the distance yet to go. “At some point some of these threads will start joining together,” Dr. Sutherland said. “I think all of us are far more optimistic now than we were five or 10 years ago.”

I think they have every reason to be optimistic- they've made incredible advances. But one of the interesting aspects of science is the unexpected surprise- much like Ida will be altering concepts of human evolution, other discoveries may come along to challenge some of the existing hypothesis. But that's science for you- follow the evidence.

Interesting question. I'm working at a biotech company these days, so I get exposure to some of the theory. I see no conflict between science and religion. That's why I suggested this article to Charles last night. It starts to close some of the biggest holes the ID folks have whinged about. Good stuff.

Nothing to be humbled about, really. I was crossing a street, on my way to muster for funeral duty, and some idiot making a right hand turn ran me over. I wasn't the only person in the crosswalk, but the only one too slow to get out of the way.

Lost a brand new Summer Whites uniform that had cost me a BUNDLE.

A friend of my father broke his leg severely a couple of years ago, and the pins became infected so badly he just opted for amputation. One good thing is that prosthetic limbs have come a long long way. I've seen some really high-tech looking ones on Marine Iraq war vets and my father's friend just got something along those lines as well. Man charged with impersonating dead mom
by Tom Hays - Jun. 17, 2009 01:07 PM
Associated Press

NEW YORK - Irene Prusik has been dead for six years. But in April, someone showed up at the Department of Motor Vehicles in Brooklyn to renew her driver's license.

The explanation given by prosecutors rivals the Hitchcock classic "Psycho": It was her son, in drag.

Thomas Parkin, 49, was charged Wednesday in the bizarre plot to impersonate his deceased mother so he could collect $117,000 in government benefits. He and the man accused of being his accomplice, Mhilton Rimolo, pleaded not guilty to grand larceny, criminal impersonation and other charges.

William Jennings Bryan, and that 's all I saying on the subject! ;)

AND ,, tying this in with the evolutionary theme on this thread, did you know that Bryan was ANTI-Darwin?

(I did know that, but WIKI articultaes it better than I)
(from WIKI)
Bryan opposed Darwinism for two reasons. First its materialistic account of the descent of man through evolution undermined the Bible. Second, he saw neo-Darwinism or Social Darwinism as a great evil force in the world promoting hatreds and conflicts, especially the World War

Score one for the cats!

After the 2nd cat was killed, we got another cat, and named him "Bubba", because we wanted the cat to have a name that would put fear into the hearts of dogs.

So far, so good!

Like the cat in the movie Mouse Hunt?

My little guys aren't yippy, but they are VERY protective. LT's rough goes up when he is barking at another dog protecting me. It's pretty funny. They love people, though.

This guy didn't care, not one bit.
He LEFT THE CAT at my door - didn't knock, just left the cat and walked off, knowing that I (or my daughter) would FIND the broken and dead or dying cat.

How unfeeling must a person be to do that?

Google 'Maine Coon Catteries', it is such an adorable breed.
They fit their nicknames "Dog Cat" and "Gentle Giant" particularly the gentle part, yet playful and fun to have around.
Mine is a she and I don't have any claw-marks on my forearms.

The Roi would would NOT be happy if I brought another cat into the house. Not one bit.

He is illegally renting rooms to = people, I don't know where he finds them, halfway-house graduates, I guess.

For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountains of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been waiting there for centuries.

Fred Hoyle (British astrophysicist): "A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a superintellect has monkeyed with physics, as well as with chemistry and biology, and that there are no blind forces worth speaking about in nature. Kinda funny; Robert Jastrow says that, although he is "an agnostic and not a believer", it seemed to him that "the curtain drawn over the mystery of creation will never be raised by human efforts, at least in the foreseeable future, due to "the circumstances of the big bang-the fiery holocaust that destroyed the record of the past."

And coincidentally, this is the very same Big Bang that lifelong creationist Fred Hoyle denied, even though the red shift coefficient from it's echo background radiation has allowed us to date the universe at 13.73 ( ± 0.12) billion years old. Fed Hoyle also embraced the long-debunked Watchmaker analogy and the discredited creationist doctrine of irreduceable complexity.

re: #324 Charpete67

It's amazing how the intellectuals will embrace the patently absurd in lieu of what they claim is "patently absurd"...

Their answer is "life must have come from somewhere else"...but then where did that life come from.

Claiming that the planet was seeded with life by comets, meteorites, asteroids, or little green men simply kicks the evolutionary can down the cosmic road without, however, kicking it out of the cosmos. That life itself still would have had to evolve somewhere in the universe; it would have just had 13.7 billion years in which to do so, rather than 4.6 billion.

I think that it is becoming increasingly obvious that Deific Cosmic Kick-Sparking intervention in order to begin terrestrial life is neither necessary nor essential to the genesis of that life, for, as empirical science is making progressively clear, it could quite plausibly have begun out of the materials and conditions present upon this planet without such divine assistance.

That, of course, doesn't mean that a God didn't do it; it just means that it isn't necessary for a God to have done it in order for it to have gotten done.
