In the VH1 "Behind the Music" on Metallica they were talking about all the people who came to audition to replace their bass player who'd been killed in an accident. I thought it was wild that Les Claypool auditioned -- at the time Primus was already established -- and they said he was just too good a player for them. LOL.

Everybody's taking notice of the amazing Iranian women.....
Women in Iran march against discrimination
Like thousands of other Iranian women, Parisa took to Tehran's streets this week, her heart brimming with hope. "Change," said the placards around her.
The young Iranian woman eyed the crowd and pondered the possibility that the rest of her life might be different from her mother's. She could see glimmers of a future free from discrimination -- and all the symbols of it, including the head-covering the government requires her to wear every day.

A very moving video....
Translation....
Tomorrow is Saturday. Tomorrow is a day of destiny.
Tonight, the cries of Allah-o Akbar are heard louder and louder than the nights before.Where is this place? Where is this place where every door is closed? Where is this place where people are simply calling God? Where is this place where the sound of Allah-o Akbar gets louder and louder?
I wait every night to see if the sounds will get louder and whether the number increases. It shakes me. I wonder if God is shaken.
Where is this place that where so many innocent people are entrapped? Where is this place where no one comes to our aid? Where is this place that only with our silence we are sending our voices to the world? Where is this place that the young shed blood and then people go and pray -- standing on that same blood and pray. Where is this place where the citizens are called vagrants?
Where is this place? You want me to tell you? This place is Iran. The homeland of you and me.
This place is Iran.

Right now my guess is they're going to throw out the Mullahs and start a secular democracy. I'd give that about even chances with the mullahs violently crushing the uprising.
Another possibility is Mousavi installs himself as some sort of dictator. Not sure how likely that is.

You want to talk about a great live show by people who really know how to play? I saw these guys on tour about ten years ago - the last arena show I ever attended and one of the few acts that would have motivated me to do that. Buckethead guested with Les in a band that I don't remember as Primus, although Brain was drumming, AFAICR. The performance was awesome, Buckethead and Les together provide very nearly too much simultaneous virtuoso pyrotechnics for a single stage.
To have seen Buckethead with Praxis is something I missed, but wish I hadn't:

Likely out come at this point would be a form of secular democracy. I don't see the Mullahs staying in power at this point baring massive bloodshed.
The question on the table is how much violence are the Mullahs will inflict to retain power, vs the number and willingness of the people to take that power from the mullahs.

Random philosophical musing--
If you are doing something righteous* that you would otherwise do, but it is also dictated by your government, is it still an act of righteousness?
If it were actually an act of righteousness to wear a veil, (big, big if) doesn't it lose something if it is also mandated? Isn't giving yourself to God supposed to be voluntary, or otherwise worthless?
Could the mullahs have created a place where nobody was truly righteous because nobody was choosing to do what was deemed to be what their god wanted, only forced?
Just some random thoughts of mine.

Righteousness IMHO, is only righteousness if it generated from within, in response to conscience, spirituality or moral conviction. Without consideration of any external factors. It is done only for it's own sake

On a similar note: Is being righteous any more voluntary if you fear godly punishment. In Christianity god will send you to hell for certain things. Is compliance any more voluntary than fearing the state will send you to prison?
Who is more righteous? The atheist who does good for its own sake or the religious person who does it out of fear of godly punishment?
All interesting questions.

You left out the Christian who does things from the belief that it is the right thing to do, that God has given commandments to help people not do hurtful things, and feels love for others in their heart, although an athiest/Jew/Buddhist/Taoist/Shintoist/etc. could also feel those things.

Two parables one of the widow's mite, where the widow's small donation giving quietly is of more value, than the wealthy man's large public donation. And that of prayer, not to loudly publicly pray to show piousness, but to go into a closet, and pray earnestly and quickly.

Not an uncommon question.
And frankly a the difference between being religious and spiritual.
Religious is man doing things out of his own effort for God.
Spiritual is allowing God to work through you.
Cain and Abel, being the first example, how and what they offered to God. The "religious" offering wasn't accepted.
Therein lies the answer to Hitchen's criticisms of religion.
When people take upon themselves to do for God, without God, all hell breaks loose.

It is always wise to donate anonymously providing you can keep enough documentation for the tax man. It reigns in your ego. Do simple things quietly. They mean more.
My church we don't even pass the plate. There are unmarked locked boxes in a counter with a slot for donations. Tax law and such, the church does keep a record of donations made with checks etc.... that is kept in the strictest confidence. With the exception of business meetings and special projects, finances are not discussed.

Trader Joe's Defies Boycott Call Against Israeli Products
"Monrovia, CA - Anti-Israel groups under the umbrella of the "U.S. Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel" recently sent form letters to retail chain store Trader Joe's headquarters demanding the company stop carrying Israeli products as these products "help fund an economy based on illegal occupation and apartheid."
Traders Joe's has more than 300 stores in the U.S. with locations in NY, CT, MD, and NJ.
The Anti-Defamation League Central Pacific office sent a letter to Trader Joe's and received a response from Jon Basalone, Trader Joe's Senior Vice President of Marketing.
He wrote, "We have received a few letters [threatening a boycott] like this via our customer relations email. Our response is that we sell products, and do not use our products as political tools or to make any statements about any political causes. We have no intention of removing any products based on pressure from any group, no matter what they support or don't support. As always, we believe our customers are smart, and they are capable of making decisions about what they purchase."
Anti-Israel activists in Pittsburgh walked into a Trader Joe's and proceeded to pull Israeli goods and distribute misinformation materials to customers before being removed for trespassing.
On the 7th March the same group of Pro-Palestinian supporters wearing 'Boycott Israel' T-Shirts entered a French supermarket and started to remove all goods supplied by Israel, they plan the same idea this Saturday--June 20th--in U.S retail chain Traders Joe's.
The anti-Israel groups have called for a national day of de-shelving Israeli products from Trader Joe's stores on Saturday, June 20, World Refugee Day.
Pro-Israeli activists have asked that consumers should to do the following:
1. Alert your community members and encourage them to shop at Trader Joe's stores and to specifically buy Israeli products, particularly before and during the weekend of June 20. It would be fantastic if all the Israeli products are gone before the boycotters arrive.
Israeli products carried at Trader Joe's include: Dorot Crushed Garlic, Dorot Chopped Cilantro, Holyland Matzos, Pastures of Eden Feta Imported, Trader Joe's Israeli Couscous and Trader Joe's Harvest Grains Blend.
2. Tell managers at Trader Joe's stores that you really like the Israeli products they carry and hope they will carry more in the future.
3. Alert managers that June 20 has been declared as a day to de-shelve Israeli products and they should be aware of any people who may try to vandalize, shoplift, or deface the products in any way.
4. Write a letter of thanks to Trader Joe's national headquarters on their contact page or by mail to:
Don Bane, Chairman and CEO
Doug Rauch, President
Charles J. Pilliter, SVP Operations

It has recently come to my attention that anti-Israel groups called for a boycott of Israeli products in your stores.
I want to thank you for not giving into this pressure and for carrying products from Israel that I and so many others enjoy across the country. I will continue to buy these goods and others from your stores."
From Voz Iz Neias website:
My local Trader Joe's is right near Union Square in Manhattan on East 14th Street-- and since Union Square always seems to have pro-Palestinian demonstrators, I expect this store will be one of their targets.
I already sent my thank you to TJ's for not allowing these pressure tactics to succeed....

These ''boycott Israel' groups are not really anti-Israel groups all they are is anti-Semitic.
There is no such thing as anti-Zionism it all boils down to anti-Semitism.
%P% (a big hoik and spit) to them and kudos to Trader Joe's for showing some testicular fortitude in the face of this anti-Semitic bullying.

In the overnight thread I put in the spin-offs links to a paper that proposes (once again) that humans' closest living relative is the orang-utan, not the chimpanzee.
Controversial it is, and I expect it to be a topic among the ID/creationist boards for a while.
Evolution/creation debate forums are starting to pick it up, e.g.:
Humans More Related To Orangutans Than Chimps, Study Suggests though in that thread the molecular guys aren't buying it.
In doing my Google search, though, what surprised me is how fast the racists jumped on this. While looking for creationists discussing the paper, links came up for a rather odorous website with discussions such as this:
Humans derive from orangutans, n[] from chimps
This research suggests to me that humans -- White and Asian -- came from the Asian Orangutan. It would make sense that n[] evolved from African primates, such as the chimp. It would explain a lot to show that humans and n[] had different evolutionary ancestors.
[redacted by me]
The reply to the above entry are even worse.
I won't link to such a sight (and am 100000000% sure that Charles wouldn't want me to do so). That there is an entire (apparently active) website and forum dedicated to entries such as the above... what can I say.

I'll give you my breakdown.
Moral Commandments....
"Do not murder"
"Do not commit adultery."
"Do not steal."
"Do not bear false witness against your neighbor"
Not morality related....
"Do not covet your neighbor's wife" (Mine neighbors wife has a nice ass. Nothing wroing with that)
"Honor your father and your mother..." (I know plenty of people who don't associate with their parents for various reasons. Nothing wrong with that)
"Remember [zachor] the Sabbath day and keep it holy"(Who cares what day it is?)
"Do not swear falsely by the name of the LORD..." (goddamnit!)
"Do not make an image or any likeness of what is in the heavens above..." (Mo'Toons!)
"I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me..." (I don't care how many gods people worship and what order they do it in)

"Do not covet your neighbor's wife" (Mine neighbors wife has a nice ass. Nothing wroing with that)
Observing attributes isn't covet. Covet is more obessing, leading to actions. Which can cause all other kinds of issues.
"Honor your father and your mother..." (I know plenty of people who don't associate with their parents for various reasons. Nothing wrong with that)
Honor, doesn't necessarily mean you have to put up with that which isn't honorable. Recognize those that gave you life.
"Remember [zachor] the Sabbath day and keep it holy"(Who cares what day it is?)
The most religious commandment? A day to rest and reflect, is it such a bad idea?
"Do not swear falsely by the name of the LORD..." (goddamnit!)
That's it, you are going to burn in hell for that! //
Swear falsely, i.e. not to tell the truth. Be truthful, and especially don't swear by God if your lying.
"Do not make an image or any likeness of what is in the heavens above..."
This is pretty simple, if you are going to worship God, worship God, not an object, or substitute.
"I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me..."
Even atheists could use this one. Don't make something your god, money, objects, whatever. If something other than God, becomes your god it becomes easier to forget the basics, and then murder steal etc.. on behalf of that god.

Is being righteous any more voluntary if you fear godly punishment.
You mean, Is it more righteous to do the right thing because it's what you're supposed to do than to do the right thing just because you're afraid of going to hell? Catholics have an answer for that: Yes. Perfect contrition vs. imperfect contrition.
