.
..After the Italian news agency Adnkronos International reported the kidnapping, it was sporadically mentioned by such blogs as Little Green Footballs, the Jawa Report and Dan Cleary, Political Insomniac. Michael Yon, a former Green Beret, said from Thailand that he "sat on it" for months and in March "just did a small item because it was pretty much out there" online. "There's no way I would've done that if I thought it increased his jeopardy." Keller said the Times contacted such bloggers, and in each case, "they took it down," as Yon did...

McCain: Obama has 'done well' as president so farWASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. John McCain says his opponent in last year's presidential campaign, Barack Obama, has "done well" in his first five months in the White House.
The Arizona Republican says that using a legislative scorecard to judge the presidency so far, Obama has achieved all his legislative goals.
On the down side, McCain says that Obama's successes in Congress have come with little or no Republican support.
McCain also is critical of Obama for setting a date for closing the detainee facility at Guantanamo Bay without first developing a comprehensive plan for what to do with its prisoners.
And the Arizona senator says Obama should speak out more in support of protesters in Iran.
McCain appeared Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation."
Makes you wonder what "doing badly" would look like?

Then I would see the errors of my way. 6 months after he died, I was doing the same thing. Now, I just do it because if my dad ever found out I paid $80 an hour to get my car fixed, he would come back from the dead and put a boot in my ass.

Again, it's just a twittered rumor. If true, though, it probably portends the regime planning to do even worse things than it already is. In general, during civil unrest, a government wants the lights to stay ON. If they actually choose to switch off the power, it could only mean that they're getting ready to spill a LOT of blood, and don't want the world to see.
But I repeat; so far, a rumor.

'Neda' becomes rallying cry for Iranian protests
(CNN) -- "RIP NEDA, The World cries seeing your last breath, you didn't die in vain. We remember you."
That post on Twitter came from a man who identified himself as an American guitarist in Nashville, Tennessee.
Amid the hundreds of images and videos of Saturday's brutal crackdown on protesters in Iran that flooded the Internet, it was the graphic video showing the death of a young woman that touched a nerve among those following the events in Tehran for more than a week.
Like most of the information coming out of Tehran, it is impossible to verify her name, Neda, or the circumstances of her apparent death, captured close-up on a bystander's camera.
CNN ran a pixilated version of the video, which was posted on YouTube. It shows a woman in jeans and white sneakers collapsed on the street, as the person with the camera -- most likely from a cell phone -- runs toward her and focuses on her face.
One blogger posted that Neda was protesting with her father in Tehran when pro-government Basiji militia opened fire and shot her in the heart.
"The final moments of her tender young life leaked into the pavement of Karegeh Street today, captured by cell phone cameras," the unnamed blogger posted on Newsvine.com. "And not long after, took on new life, flickering across computer screens around the world on YouTube, and even CNN." iReport.com: Share images from Iran
People on Twitter starting forming a discussion group with the "hashtag" .neda to post their comments about her death and media coverage of the killing, as well.
It became one of the top "trending topics" on Twitter by Saturday evening, early Sunday Tehran time.
"Neda, ojala que tu muerte no sea en vano," one poster tweeted. "Neda, I hope that your death is not in vain."

The relationship between sons and fathers is one that is not describable.
Especially when you look like, sound like, and act like your father. The shock at seeing what is going to become of you is enough to stop your heart.
So I always loved my father, even during the five years during which I was so mad at him that I refused to speak to him. The stubborn bassard wouldn't speak to me, either.
But I knew that he loved me, too.
Once during this five year period, he got word that my car was broken, and that I couldn't get the damned thing running right.
So he drove four hours one way, got out of his truck and didn't even come to the door. He just took his toolbox, popped the hood, fixed the damned engine, and got back into his truck and left. Never said a word.
Like I say; a small-minded, ignorant, violent, mean, loving, intelligent, generous, helpful, accommodating, ball of contradiction.
The worst thing that he ever did to me was to die on me.

I couldn’t believe it when I read it, but here it is, as it appeared on the CNN website, as an introduction to an essay by Fareed Zakaria:
“The decisive margin of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s victory in elections last week stunned many observers and angered his opponents’ supporters, who in the ensuing days took to the streets in protest by the hundreds of thousands.”
That’s right, with NO qualification–and no evidence, and no shame–CNN declares victory for Ahmadinejad by “a decisive margin” and makes it sound like the courageous people of Iran who are even now being murdered on the streets were just sore losers.
Hey, anyone awake there at CNN? Or was this a deliberate kow-tow to the Supreme Leader. Nobody knows what the “margin” was in the election, who won or how “decisive” it was. Or did you feel compelled to accept the fascist regime’s line that it was “divinely certified” in order to maintain your good relations with the murderers in power?
How about some editing: “The decisive margin of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s victory–a result announced by the dictatorship before a large portion of the ballots could have been counted–stunned many observers who raised doubts about its validity and angered opponents who took to the streets to demonstrate peacefully–where they are now being beaten and murdered by thugs from the fascist theocracy.”
I think CNN should issue a correction or live forever in the journalistic hall of shame.

Very sorry to hear that.
I don't know what the problem is, so maybe this is out of line, but I'd suggest that you try contacting him. It can't possibly make things any worse, and it's possible he's past whatever issues he was having and is now simply too embarrassed to pick up the phone himself.
Just my two cents, as someone who's been on the other side of a similar situation.

re: #89 razorbacker
I miss him to this day. I'll miss him until I die.
What an absolutely beautiful story. Thank you.

Yeah, some plastic on the keyboard may be in order....
I think that this whole thread is testament to just how important fathers (and father figures) are to all of us. This runs counter to "conventional wisdom" perpetrated by popular culture, TV and of course, the media that often portrays fathers as bumbling fools and no more than sperm donors.
To all of those fathers, here and departed, thank you and we love you. Even if we never said it, we hope that you knew it.
To the fathers who chose to be absent in your children's lives, you have missed a major part of your life and stolen a major part of your children's lives; try and regain it while there is still time.
To the sons and daughters, estranged by choice; make peace. Whatever estranged you is probably not worth the bitterness and heartache that you carry with you. This was my mistake, I wish I could take it back.
I just had to get that off my chest.
End of sermon....carry on.

Electoral fraud for dummies
Here is a youtube video that explains why the Iranian election result is problematic--even the interior ministry's own figures do not add up. Also, Josh Muravchik takes apart a Washington Post article that tried to claim that the June 12, 2009 election reflected the will of the Iranian people. One of the authors of that article, who organized the so-called opinion poll, Ken Ballen, will be speaking at the New America Foundation tomorrow. With him will be Flynt Leverett, a leading light in what should be called the American Friends of Ahmadinejad.

You guys have had me sobbing through this entire thread. I only have about 4,000 characters remaining in this post, so I can't possibly tell you everything about what kind of man my father was, or how much I miss him. He served his country in WWII; was a faithful husband for 31 years; raised two adopted, two foster, and one biological kid; worked hard every day and never complained. They don't give out awards for that kind of thing, but they should.
I love you, Daddy. 1927-1982

In the "child shall be a father to the son" department, here's Ahmed & Salim, episode 7:
(The message of every Ahmed & Salim cartoon is that the two Palestinian brothers are essentially lovable; it's their father who is corrupt, and ought to learn from the example of his sons, but he never does.)

No matter what differences my dad and I might have, I will always love and respect him for turning off The Matrix (on DVD) during the scene where Neo and Trinity were shooting their way through the lobby of the Agent Smith HQ building. And he said, "I know you enjoy this movie, Rob, and it's up to you if you want to watch it on your own, but I think it's disgusting, and here's why..."
I was 32 or 33 at the time, and in retrospect, my dad was right.

Happy Father's Day to Every Dad.
This was my second Fathers Day.
My wife and I took my 13 month old to the Detroit Tigers game.
He sat on my lap for 90 minutes and let me hug him. ( then he got hot and melted down, and we got him inside to cool off and drink some water and he was smiling in 5 minutes saying Dadda, Dadda, Dadda)
Being a father is the greatest job in the world.
I wish everyone a wonderful Father's Day

If you find out duly what precisely made him give up on you, there may be a mutual chance to drop it into the grandparents grave.
