From TehranBureau, messages from Iran
One of the interesting ones begins:
If Obama moves to support the demonstration in strong terms, this camp will lose and Ahmadinejad will gain ground; also it is not good to make an American domestic issue from an Iranian domestic issue.
And another:
Dear friend, if you have any contacts within the American Administration, please send them this message on behalf of us, ordinary Iranians in Iran (whose interests and concerns are very different from those of the exiled Iranians in the United States and in Europe who do not yet understand the mentality here and who have been cut off from the Iranian society for too long). Tell your contacts in the Administration that their point of view regarding Iran is by far the best position that an American Government has ever taken. We appreciate this and thank the President.During the last two or three decades not one American president had “understood” Iran. All of them got caught in the traps of the mollahs, despite themselves having to play the bad cop .. but this time the intelligent president has decided not to join in their game, bravo

Ditto.
It is truly amazing.
I had the news on this morning for awhile, Fox then Headline News, and I realized they had absolutely nothing to report that I didn’t already know from watching the tweets.
So they brought on “analysts”, who honestly, lent absolutely no clarity whatsoever.

From the same link I posted in #9:
A roundup from Tehran earlier this morning (Sunday 21 June):
As you know, yesterday 19 were killed in Tehran (we don’t have numbers from other cities yet), including a 16-yr-old girl called Neda. Dozens are wounded, according to a friend of mine whose house is in front of Amir al-Momenin Hospital and who saw many gunshot victims being carried in until late last night.
Protests were not limited to Tehran, but included (according to Reformist news sites): Tabriz, Shiraz, Esfahan, Sanandaj (in Kurdestan), Rasht, Sari, Arak, and Ahvaz. There is reportedly a “hukumat nezami” [martial law] declared in Ahvaz, complete with tanks in the streets, since it is a sensitive border area. [reportedly is key here, no independent confirmation]
Today is quiet so far; but for tomorrow another protest is planned in Ferdowsi Sq. It is unclear how many participated in yesterday’s protests, but it was in the thousands based on eyewitness accounts. Although the number out on the streets seems to have dropped since Khamenei’s sermon, the tone of the slogans has become more inflammatory: cries of “Marg bar Khamenei” were heard yesterday [Death to Khamanei] — it seems the wrath of the election aftermath is turning from Ahmadinejad to the Leader now.
Mousavi himself appeared on Jeyhoun St. near Azadi Sq. yesterday, and in his speech declared he is ready for “marytrdom” and that people should continue *NON-VIOLENT* protest in the case of his arrest or assassination. He ended his speech with the words:
“Dolat-e Kudeta, nangat baad, nangat baad.” [roughly: Shame, shame on a government [based on a] coup d’etat.]
There are reports that Faezeh Rafsanjani has been arrested in the newest round of arrests, and that they are now pursuing prominent Reformist Isa Saharkhiz.
Interesting that the protests are not limited to Tehran. I wonder what significance that will have?

I’ve been struggling with the same thing. It is natural, I think, to want our President to make a strong statement.
I don’t like Obama, and I don’t necessarily trust that he will always do the right thing, but I don’t think any statement could have been much stronger than it was. I wish he had made it earlier, but again, I’m not sure he could have said anything stronger.

If the regime wins, that will have a negative impact upon Obama’s game plan.
He’ll not be able to “dialog” with Tehran like he’d intended, coming into his Administration. If he tries, he’ll be seen as willing to cut a deal with the devil.

There are grounds for being surprised at the result of the Iranian election.
Even grounds for being disappointed.
But there are absolutely no grounds for the cats’ chorus of criticism and allegations now emanating from some quarters after the cookie crumbled the wrong way.
I have been more closely interested than normal in this poll.
I present two weekly shows for Iranian-owned Press TV.
As such, I know that, uniquely for a developing country, the Iranian broadcast media went to extraordinary lengths to be fair to all four presidential candidates….

A bit more on Neda. A blogger apparently in touch with Neda’s family members offers some new details (translated by reader Nima): she was born in 1982, apparently her full name was Neda Agha-Soltan, and she was at the protest with one her professors and several other students. She was, they said, shot by a basiji riding by on a motorcycle. Also, she was apparently buried today at a large cemetery in the south of Tehran. ABC News’ Lara Setrakian writes, “Hearing reports Neda was buried in Behesht Zahra cemetery earlier today, memorial service cancelled on orders from authorities.”

This is the statement from the Office of the President issued yesterday.
The Iranian government must understand that the world is watching. We mourn each and every innocent life that is lost. We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people. The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights. As I said in Cairo, suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away. The Iranian people will ultimately judge the actions of their own government. If the Iranian government seeks the respect of the international community, it must respect the dignity of its own people and govern through consent, not coercion.
Martin Luther King once said – “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” I believe that. The international community believes that. And right now, we are bearing witness to the Iranian peoples’ belief in that truth, and we will continue to bear witness.
It’s not a bad statement, at all, and it goes about as far as I think he could have gone. Support for right to assembly and free speech; and a gentle nudge to the iranian government to earn the respect of the international community by respecting the dignity of its own people.

Interesting that the protests are not limited to Tehran. I wonder what significance that will have?
In Iran political change has always happened in that order: Tehran, Tabriz and then Shiraz and Esfahan and near the end Mashhad.
Apart from that, it’s good thing that other cities keep Basij busy, otherwise regime would pack them all and bring them to Tehran. Right now though, they’re afraid that doing so would cost them the control of other cities.

re: #65 jcm
We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people.
The Iranian government views their actions as justified.
As I said in Cairo,
Leave yourself out of it, just once.
The international community believes that. And right now, we are bearing witness to the Iranian peoples’ belief in that truth, and we will continue to bear witness.
Bear witness, but what about holding responsible?
Well, yes, he did have to throw in the 2nd paragraph about himself.
But jcm - how to hold them responsible? And for what should we hold them responsible? I don’t think at this point we (the U.S., or any other country) can hold Iranians “responsible” for their internal matters.
The best the leader of any country can do right now is - just what Obama did in the first paragraph of the statement he issued. To go any further than that would be to begin issuing “threats” that we will take this or that action unless … what? Dinner Jacket gives in? Mousavi gives in? What?

I’m interested that the protest is spread out - perhaps will keep the authorities spread thin enough that people can accomplish something.

It seems obvious that Obama will be unable to deal with these theocratic thugs. And I suspect that history will reveal the Mad Mullahs to be more than ordinary clerics following the commands of Allah. I suspect that in addition to irrational bigotry and hatred, this group has other secrets. Plundered state and private wealth, women, drugs, torture rooms, snuff films, booze, young boys, child porn. The whole deal. They act a bit strange for my taste.
Mesbah Yazdi (Mahmoud’s godfather/mentor) controls the import/export of sugar in Iran. He single handedly brought down the domestic industry by massive imports during the past few years.
Khamenei is an opium addict, his nickname before the revolution was “Ali Sheere ‘ee” (Sheere ~ Taryak ~ Opium).
Rafsanjani basically has no ideology, he does everything he does for money. Today he’s in Mousavi’s camp because IRGC is tightening its grip on economy more and more every day.
Head of Tehran’s moral police (not a mullah, but just as bad) was arrested few months before election, performing prayers, drunk, with a handful of naked women. I don’t see anything wrong with that personally, except the part where he arrests women for something as simple as not covering their hair. He has been removed, but regime said it was his personal financial issues. Yeah, right.
And about young boys, well, Catholic church has gotten a bad rep (deservedly) but situation is just as bad in religious schools in Qom. Young talabeh (students) are the victims. It’s a very well known, very little discussed fact.
List goes on forever, point is, yes, all of those you said applies, and a lot more.

I think those Republicans who are complaining about Obama’s approach w.r.t. the Iranian anti-government protests should review their recent history. There were no such protests in Iran during the recent Republican administration. Just maybe, Obama’s respectful but hands-off approach and recent address to the Muslim world might have played a role in the Iranian people’s rising up as they have. Bush’s way didn’t work!

I’m not sure. I base “season” on when the price goes down. Right now we’re getting regular yellow peaches for $2.49 but it may go down to $1.99 soon. White peaches always seem to be a bit more. For eating out of hand, I prefer nectarines, but my mom’s peach cobbler is a work of art.

Blackberries will take over.
In fact the Italian word for blackberry also means “ruined” if you apply it to a building. Or the name for blackberry means “ruin.” It works either way.
(Rovinato = ruined; Rovo = blackberry)

Umm… power to the people?
I hope this turns out to be a velvet revolution, not a tiananmen square.
I really hope we are covertly arming these guys, or at least sending them cash… but who am I kidding? In this era of hope and change we reject the Bush doctrine of supporting Democracy, for the Obama doctrine of supporting tyranny.
The least he could do is give the moral support, the Iranian government is already blaming this on us and we haven’t even done anything yet.
