Westboro Baptist Church Helps Manhattan Synagogue

Religion • Views: 3,170

The infamous Westboro Baptist Church is on the road, harassing Jews in Manhattan, but a West Village synagogue turned the tables on these freaks very nicely: Manhattan synagogue makes $10G off of Westboro Baptist Church protest.

A Manhattan synagogue turned a visit from hate-spewing demonstrators into a lucrative fund-raiser Sunday.

Leaders of Congregation Beth Simchat Torah, a West Village synagogue that caters to gays and lesbians, didn’t want to ignore a planned visit by members of the rabidly anti-gay and anti-Semitic Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church.

Instead, they asked supporters to pledge a dollar or more for every minute that six protesters stood near their synagogue hurling epithets and holding signs that read “God Hates Fags” and “Jews Stole the Land.”

The final haul after 50 minutes: $10,000.

“Their very presence will actually raise money for the mission of this community,” said Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum of the synagogue, which now holds services in rented space. “The synagogue wants a building so we’re hoping this will help us get a building.”

The Kansas church, known for picketing soldiers’ funerals to say their deaths are God’s punishment for Americans’ tolerance of gays, has ramped up its demonstrations against Jews, who they say are sinners.

The group visited several New York synagogues and Jewish institutions over the weekend and planned to hit a Central Park celebration marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of Tel Aviv.

I am completely an easy going person but that behavior would have put me over the edge.

Phelps and his "church" make me physically ill.

I have been to countries where this kind of hate is prevalent and continually reinforced by a range of authority figures. That is bad enough, and forgivable for the young ones who are continually indoctrinated. They have, in effect, little chance to escape a societal hated that been bred into them.

To have that deep kind of hate when you are surrounded by people and, indeed, an entire society that eschews that kind of hatred, takes a special kind of real evil that has little to do with any religions teachings.

Westboro didn't quite know what they got themselves into when they pulled their usual antics. Beth Simchat Torah definitely made the best of this situation, and helped themselves in a big way.

Had that happened, and had I had the honor (as I have with other vets) of being on his funeral detail and showing him respect as only another veteran can, and can promise you two things:

1. I would have carried out his ceremony with absolute respect and unconditional attention to detail, not allowing anything on the periphery to derail my duty.

2. After it was over, I would have told any family members I could talk to that I will forever honor their loved one's service, and would forever have contempt for the group that disrupted his honor.

What's amazing about the "Dirty Harry" films is that they were condemned, when they came out, as terribly violent. They are tame by today's standards.

What really frosted the critics, of course, is that they had a moral center which was resoundingly anti-PC.

I knew Callahan was old-fashioned, and so I guess I should not be surprised he had strong feeling against computers.

My brother needed to take classes as a youngster, he loved to fight, was and still is very good at it, but if he had not met his teacher at a young age, he would be in prison.

Well, actually, yes, given that the Bible, and in particular Romans Chapter 11, is clear that Gentile followers of Jesus Christ must not boast against the "natural branches" of the vine that is Israel.

It should make anyone, who is in a "church" that has written off ( and written out, for that matter) Israel, seriously consider the doctrine being taught therein, and compare it to the written Word of God.

The Christian Church will be defined by how ell it obeys the teaching of Jesus Christ Himself. What I stated was that by their actions and doctrine with regard Israel and the Jewish people, Westboro are in rebellion against Christ's teachings. That makes them NOT a Christian Church.

That's brilliant. Take that, Westboro haters.

Now you know the bigots from Kansas will spin that to their advantage.

What a great story! As a Christian, I'm embarrassed by those douche bags from the Westboro Baptist Church so it's a delight to see the synagogue turn the hatred from those idiots into cash they can use. It would be awesome if every time those knuckledraggers showed up somewhere to do their thing their targets would profit. I bet those frauds would head back to Kansas and give up their hateful shit. Then maybe not, they are complete idiots after all. Well, I can dream, can I?

This sick organization hates Christianity more than it hates homosexuals and jews, otherwise it would not publicly vomit forth such disgusting views while impersonating a church. Their true mission is to defame christians and organized religion, in my opinion.
