Iran Updates: No Election Annulment, Protests ‘Dying Out?’

The mullahs have ruled out the possibiity that the Iranian election will be annulled.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran’s top legislative body has again ruled out any annulment of the June 12 presidential election, as demanded by two defeated candidates, state television said on Tuesday.

“Iran’s Guardian Council rejects annulment of the June 12 presidential election, saying that there have been no major polling irregularities,” the English-language Press TV said.

This news comes as several sources report that the protests are beginning to quiet down, after days of violent crackdown. At Obama’s news conference today, CNN’s Suzanne Malveaux said:

We also have people on the ground that have been seeing that the streets are quieter now and that is because they fear that they are paralyzed by fear - fear of people gone missing, fear of violence - that perhaps this is a movement that’s gone underground - that perhaps this is a movement which is dying.

Here’s Obama’s statement on Iran from his press conference, from NBC News:

Yes things are quieting down. Fear may be a problem, but I look upon it as they are taking the opportunity to suck back and reload. Recharge their batteries, and plan new ways of civil disobedience along peaceful lines.

Last week I was predicting that this would be resolved, one way or the other, within a week or so. I think this is starting to look like it might be more drawn out. Even though the mullahs might not fail soon and the protests might die down, they've lost the confidence of the people after stolen elections and violent crackdowns. This might take a year or two of off and on protests and civil unrest.

8 MrSilverDragon  Tue, Jun 23, 2009 10:57:35am

I have to believe that the movement is just moving underground. There are far too many people invested in making a change for the better to just let the movement die.

At least, that's what I want to believe.

Iranian authorities are asking neighbors to rat out protesters. "recharging" and relaxation isn't on the menu for protesters about to get hunted down & "disappeared".

1:45 PM ET --

HuffPost asks Obama a question about Iran at press conference. My colleague Nico Pitney was given the opportunity to ask a question at Obama's press conference today that came directly from an Iranian. His question for the president was: ""Under which conditions would you accept the election of Ahmadinejad, and if you do accept it without any significant changes in the conditions there, isn't that a betrayal of what the demonstrators there are working towards?"

Here is video of the question and Obama's answer.

It was said earlier, and it bears repeating.

The Iranian revolution in 1979 didn't occur overnight. It flowed and ebbed as power struggles occurred behind the scenes and events transpired over a series of months. We should not expect this to be resolved quickly, and the bloodshed seen thus far may be an indicator of things to come.

If indeed the crackdown cowes the people in iran, our special forces simply HAVE to help relight the fuse. If the freedom fighters are too afraid to publicly demonstrate, our guys need to perform some acts of economic sabotage such as blowing up their oil refinery. the mullahs need to feel some pain and the good people in iran need to know that there is help for them lurking in the shadows.

Things may look as if they are quieten down - but that is deceptive. There seems to be a change of strategy, according to the collection of tweets earlier,
here.

Further, and in spite of the threats by the Iranian police:

'rooftop allahu akbars are on, high intensity. #iranelection'
(LaraABC)

(The people have been doing this since last week, every night.)

On the government side, here are two more indicators for rifts within the Mullahcracy:
'"Larijani accused guardian council of pro-Ahmadi bias & said most Iranians R suspicions of the election result" #iranelection'
(StopAhmadi)
This would indicate that Larijani is switching sides.

And tehn this:
'#iranelection Didn't expect this: IRAN'S TOP LEGIS BODY URGES KHAMENEI TO EXTEND DEADLINE TO RECEIVE CANDIDATES' COMPLAINTS -reuters'
(JimSciutto).

No - the uprising is not quieting down - its going into a different stage.

Obama actually sounds almost resolute in the above clip.

Problem is he's running about 4 days behind, and is still too obviously desperately afraid of seeming "meddlesome."

If standing up in the defense of freedom from tyranny is considered meddlesome - that speaks volumes to me about the vacuity of our President's soul.

Punitive fines imposed by tyrants are rarely scaled in terms of affordability. they are often intended to bankrupt the person fined.

That is why we have a protection in the constitution against excessive fines and bail.

...Upon learning of his son's death, the elder Mr. Alipour was told the family had to pay an equivalent of $3,000 as a "bullet fee"—a fee for the bullet used by security forces—before taking the body back, relatives said.

Mr. Alipour told officials that his entire possessions wouldn't amount to $3,000, arguing they should waive the fee because he is a veteran of the Iran-Iraq war. According to relatives, morgue officials finally agreed, but demanded that the family do no funeral or burial in Tehran. Kaveh Alipour's body was quietly transported to the city of Rasht, where there is family.

Unfortunately - there are many forces in the other cities and towns., where clashes and beatings and murders also have occurred.

These fights and beatings do not just take place in Tehran - they are taking palce in all other cities and towns, all over Iran, lets not forget that.

This is not a bit of urban unrest which will be stomped out sooner or later by Ahmadinejad and his cohorts, this is far more wide-reaching.
And we still have not heard enough of the rifts in the Mullahcracy ...

If Khamenei now allows five more days for 'representations', following the Guardian coincil - then, regardless of the outcome, this means he cannot impose his will on them any longer:
'Supreme Leader extends the deadline for #iranelection complaints by five days, tho Guardian Council has said no recount, no redo.'

When and if change comes to Iran the new leaders of the Republic will remember who stood by them and who did not. By failing to utter any words supporting the freedom of the Iranian people to choose or to condemn repression President Obama has sold out future allies who will not forget where we stood as well as our own national values and belief that all men are endowed with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Sure, a once-in-a-lifetime democratic revolution in the world's greatest sponsor of terrorism is getting ground under and the opportunity to recast the Middle East may be lost forever, but at least Obama's imaginary, one-way dialogue with the leaders of that regime is intact! Any second now they are going to stop blaming us for interfering anyway, and stop chanting Death to America at prayers every Friday. That's the reward for Obama's brilliant strategy of staying the course "keeping his cool." Non-mission accomplished!

an analogy...maybe not a good one, but I well remember the anti-war movement in the late sixties...the rise of extremists like the SDS and Weatherman all grew out of an anti war/anti govt sentiment...it took a long time, several years before the movement matured into a nationwide, almost middle class thing, but it did and eventually the demonstrations were so huge that it brought an end to the vietnam war...it take time to evolve and mature...the Iranians have to be in it for the long haul

Not a bad analogy. It was groups like Another Mother For Peace that helped make it mainstream. If women removing their hijabs is widespread, that could mainstream these protests in Iran.

That he doesn't tells me much of his character and his past, where he never had qualms about stirring up the 'oppressed' here in the US, whether they really were or not. We all know that Mousavi is not only not an angel, but can in fact be called a mass murderer.
As can any of the Mullahs we might want to name - as can Ahmadinejad.

I'm not supporting Mousavi as the best and only solution for Iran - he is right now just a viable opponent, and he might become the catalyst for a true change of regime - in time!

I think we need all be clear that this is no longer an uprising to get Mousavi into power, it hs gone further than that. Some mullahs are trying to cling to power, or getting it back, like rafsanjani - but imho the events have overtaken all tehse games of politicla chess.

However, as lawhawk ahs pointed out - this will take time, its not an instant event, or as someone else said: its a marathon, not a sprint.

Probably. There's nothing nefarious about this. His coverage is the best of the blogs and the MSM. He's the leading journalist on this story so it's no suprise that they invited him to ask a question. It's common sense, not a conspiracy.

I never said it was a conspiracy. This tweet doesn't confirm it, but it's not a stretch to speculate whether they discussed the content of the question, which I think is improper.

That occurred to me too. You would think he would feel an affinity and kinship with these truly oppressed people. That he doesn't tells me much of his character and his past, where he never had qualms about stirring up the 'oppressed' here in the US, whether they really were or not. It was all about agitating against feigned oppression with the end goal being the seizing of power.

It's not just a nudist camp...

If he did participate in the summer solstice celebration (which we acknowledge is not likely), he could get into some real trouble. Rangers and police warn that people caught outdoors in the altogether could be charged with indecent exposure. Managers of the Appalachian Trail, where the tradition is sometimes observed by those trekking from Georgia to Maine, also discourage nudity.

“It’s just rude,” said Brian King, spokesman for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy in Harpers Ferry, W.Va. “People are out there hiking with their kids and families, and there are Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.”

There seems to be an exhibitionist angle to the naked hiking thing.

My thought is that Mousavi was obviously the ruling parties' B-team since they allowed him to run .Time magazine, of all places, ran an article recently describing the top ten power players in Iran. There are better options or combinations of options than just Mousavi cuz' he's on the ballot. Being on the ballot is a political advantage for Mousavi but the debate is moving from the streets to behind closed doors. The results, as you and others have said will take time to be seen.

Spot on - its something easily overlooked or forgotten amongst all the news from the streets of Iran.

Mousavi was and is not a bona fide opponent of the Mullahs. he may ahve changed because of the events of the last weeks or so - but he also was a Mullah-choice.

And the really Big Beast, Rafsanjani, is still hiding in the undergrowth, plotting and plotting ...

I think some new, true opposition leaders will turn up, in time.

i was listening to mark levin the other day and he played some clips of speeches that o gave during the election. he sounded like reagan. pro democracy, our duty to spread it around the world. and o hauled out lincoln and basked in the glow of that comparison. o would not have been elected if the msm had done their job and o had not been so deceptive. interesting how many people were conned into voting for him. many probably thought they were getting a strong centrist w/ a flavor of reagan. and then he gets in office and starts grabbing like stalin.

I am far more disappointed with the mindless, unquestioning, sheeplike quality of the American voter than I am with Obama. Gullibility of this sort is dangerous for the future of the country.
While I am disappointed with the voters, I am contemptuous of and deeply angry with the media and its calculated policy of disinformation and manipulation of information and their blatant taking of sides. They were the shepherds that led the sheep and while shepherds are supposed to care for the flock, these shepherds care only about advancing their own agenda and taking the flock with them.

Not quite. Yes, he ran an absolutely miserable campaign; for starters, I remember people here begging--begging--the McCain campaign for lawn signs and bumper stickers, and they simply were not available. In the meantime, the Obama campaign was turning out truckloads of very good graphics and making them very easy to get.

But McCain was running against the fact that we'd had a Republican president for 8 years. He'd have to have been a communicator on the order of Reagan to overcome that, and he simply isn't. Add to that the fact that Obama had basically appropriated the Reagan style of cheerful optimism (adapted to him, of course), while McCain, because he was of the same party as Bush, had to run on justifying, or not, the record of the prior 8 years.

* * * *
"Bush's Third Term: McCain" (or some similar titled book by Paul Begala) only sold 4,000 copies I heard on tv last night.

2:40 PM ET -- Obama mentions Neda at press conference. "Above all, we have seen courageous women stand up to brutality and threats, and we have experienced the searing image of a woman bleeding to death on the streets. While this loss is raw and painful, we also know this: those who stand up for justice are always on the right side of history."

How is Obama standing up?

Well look, we didn't have international observers on the ground, we can't say definitively what exactly happened at polling places throughout the country. What we know is that a sizeable percentage of the Iranian people themselves, spanning Iranian society, considered this election illegitimate.

I have made it clear that the United States respects the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and is not at all interfering in Iran's affairs. But we must also bear witness to the courage and dignity of the Iranian people, and to a remarkable opening within Iranian society. And we deplore violence against innocent civilians anywhere that it takes place.[...]

Or we could go rogue and talk about Jon and Kate's divorce, I guess.

No offense taken. Have him look into Lean too if he's into process improvement. Six Sigma takes a ton of time and $ to certify as a black belt. [Link: www.lean.org...] is a good place to start.

Glad to hear about DOL- I'll pass that along to a colleague there who will like to know at least one customer is happy. Their customer volume has skyrocketed and they are struggling to keep up.

The mullahs have ruled out the possibility that the Iranian election will be annulled.

They themselves annulled it when they stuffed the ballot box and pulled numbers out of their turbans instead of messing with an actual count. What they have now ruled out is the possibility that they will relent and allow an honest election.

Maybe they can hang on now by sheer brute force. It must be exhilarating to their storm troopers, the Basijis, to go around on a motorcycle and shoot girls, and the mullahs alone can offer that thrill without fear of legal consequences.

Basic activities such as seedtime and harvest, storing up fuel for the winter, and keeping the technical infrastructure of civilian life up and running, cannot so easily be whipped into line. You can't shoot a fuel shortage. Iran is descending into a North-Korean hell. We shall now see how well these "clerics" can guide their people to the worship of a Dear Leader. Perhaps Islam is robust enough that this, finally, it won't put up with.

re: #409 Hhar

Yes, some can, and they can hurt.

They aren't aggressive like many other wasps, though. If you need to get rid of them, just knock the tubes down with a long pole and walk away fast. Or soak 'em with diesel fuel or gasoline at night.

I'd just leave them alone though if you can. They mostly mind their own business and are not pests.

Not sure the boss or the MPD for that matter, would appreciate it. They come in one of my windows at my office. Not sure where. I work in a 120 year old building that is on the national historic register so they cannot replace the windows (or some crap like that). To give you an idea how "sealed" my office is, last winter I called the maintenace guy when it started to snow on my desk. I told him to bolt the fucking window closed (which he did) but the wasps seem to have found a way in.

Whatever the outcome of this uprising the damage to the system is irreparable. This has been building for some time, labor strikes, women's rights protests, and the student uprisings have been steadily growing, especially in the last nine to ten years. The election was a catalyst and even if the current protests fizzle out they will come again, bigger and stronger. I think the next big event might be a strike by oil industry workers.

Of course if Obama had just said the same thing a week ago, or in a slightly different word-order, or if the frequency of the word "freedom" were slightly higher in his vocabulary, everything in Iran would now be totally different.

I agree with you that things would not be different today, but we could be on a different trajectory to arrive at a better location in the future. In the first few days I actually agreed with Obama's approach since we did not know the players and who was really behind the initial protests.

However, a week ago it became obvious this was a general uprising from the populous and a protest about freedom, sparked by the bogus election results. Obama's comments are about a week behind the curve, and his actions (such as cutting funding for pro democracy efforts) go in the opposite and wrong direction. JFK he is not. Right now he is a belated 4th quarter cheerleader and the good guys are down too many points.

I think that is wishful thinking. The Mullahs will never back down, and they will always have the power,

Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce, one of Oregon's most famous sons, is buried in Washington on the Colville Indian Reservation where he died.

Exiled from his beloved Wallowa Valley, Joseph is buried in a Colville tribal cemetery (map) at Nespelem, Wash., where he lived after his surrender in the Nez Perce war in 1877.

Joseph died Sept. 21, 1904, at the age of about 60

I heard that President Obama said something like that we have to believe that justice will prevail - when talking about Neda. Don't you say that when the chance of that happening is near zero and, because in your rosy world, that isn't acceptable. So you make up a straw thing that is how you want to see it (not how it really is) and that way you can do NOTHING! Whew, that was a close call. Next he'll have to say "we have to believe..." about Darfur because they have been screaming for Darfur, but just want to do NOTHING!

It's not Geronimo, who surrendered, but Wiki has this fun factoid:

The 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment's motto and slogan was named after him. In 1940, the night before their first mass jump, U.S. paratroopers at Fort Benning watched the 1939 film Geronimo, in which the actor playing Geronimo yells his name as he leaps from a high cliff into a river, depicting a real-life escape Geronimo successfully attempted in which he jumped off Medicine Bluff at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, into the Medicine Creek with his Cadillac horse. Private Aubrey Eberhardt announced he would shout the name when he jumped from the airplane to prove he was not scared. The trend has since caught on elsewhere, becoming widely associated with any sort of high jump in popular culture. This unit was the first parachute battalion of the United States Army.[21][22]

Slacks, fashionable shirt, clothed to the West not the East
Hidden singing; does Allah not like the female voice?
In a car with a man not hers, it’s hot as the beast.
Stretching legs, away from the front, neither candidate was her choice.
A stray shot, sniped, mass, momentum…velocity can’t wait.
A finger twitches, no thought, a burning kiss to the heart,
Not in the action, 40 years later a new Kent State.
Falling body, pavement, a soul starts to depart.
Our world so wired her death cannot go unwatched
A scramble, “keep your eyes open”, dark stain on pavement so austere
Rushed help, black blood froths out, first aid innocently botched.
Her eyes open live then unsighted, moment of death so clear.
Allah cannot want this, it must be an error, even he must cry.
Allah cannot take her passing from me, as much as I try.

Iran is scheduling Ahmadinejad's "swearing in". Tin hat dictators do not get sworn in. They take power and the people have no choice.

That's what happened. Stop treating Iran as though it is a representative democracy; it never was. It was a totalitarian regime that used elections to give it a veneer of legitimacy, and the veneer has been shorn off by the thuggist tactics of Ahmadinejad and his co-religionists.

Yeah, too bad that's not his real name. Goyahkla, actually. Your transliteration may vary.

It was the Mexicans who named him Geronimo. This appellation stemmed from a battle in which he repeatedly attacked Mexican soldiers with a knife, ignoring a deadly hail of bullets, in reference to the Mexicans' plea to Saint Jerome ("Jeronimo!"). The name stuck.[1]

She's resonating in the West, in Iran she's just another girl the regime has murdered. For them it is nothing out of the ordinary, women are are beaten, stoned, and hanged regularly. While she is mourned, there is no outrage in Iran, they have become numb.

Update on the "staged question" from Huffpo non-scandal...

A few words about how this came about for those who are curious: as readers know, I've spent a lot of time writing and debating about the President's reaction to the events in Iran. Last night, after emailing with a few people about Obama's press conference and what he might say, I decided to throw it open to our readers. I received a call from White House staff saying they had seen what I'd written and thought the President might be interested in receiving a question directly from an Iranian.

The White House didn't guarantee that I would be able to ask a question. But I decided that if there was even a chance, I should try to reach out to as many Iranians as possible. With the invaluable help from some readers -- Chas, Chuck, and other Iranian Americans I wish I could name because they deserve the credit -- I was able to post a message in Farsi on Twitter and have my request for questions posted late last night on Balatarin. I ended up choosing the question I did because it was one of the consensus questions that many people had suggested.

Thanks also to the White House staff. They were up front about not being able to assure that a question would be asked, they never asked what the question would be, and they helped me move through the very packed briefing room when I showed up a bit late (sorry to the many toes I stepped on getting through).

Is there some reason President Obama doesn't like to use words like "Freedom" or "Demcracy" when he talks about Iran?

Actually, there might be. To Mulsims, the word "freedom" smacks to much of chaos and sin. To Islamic ears, the opposite of tyranny is not "freedom", but justice. He used the word "justice" twice as will as "unjust". It's no accident. Yup, his Iranian policy advisers know what those words will mean in Iran. Well chosen. To Muslims, the concept of "justice" in government is profound and will resonate in Iran. There is an Islamic proverb: The ruler who is not just, is not legitimate.

IMO, Obama's speech was very very good. He was wise not to connect this election to the nuclear issue. That would be the kiss of death. He showed compassion and empathy for the people, praised their courage, condemned the regime violence and reminded everybody, this is Iran's problem to solve. He should have given this speech a week ago, but I'll take it now.

Human Rights defender Fershteh Ghazi reports via twitter that the newspaper Kayhan has requested that Mir Hussein Mousavi be arrested. Kayhan is closely affiliated with the Supreme Leader, and this is a strong indication that there will be an attempt to arrest Mr. Mousavi soon. We are still seeking confirmation for this story.

Tabnak, [Persian] a paper closely affiliated with Mohsen Rezai, reports that Rezai has withdrawn his election fraud complaints.

Unfortunately, it's like all dictatorships vs. their people.

How many are the dictator's police/secret police/thugs/army willing to kill?

vs.

How many of the people are willing to die?

Largest number wins.
