Tuesday Night Music: Regina Spektor, ‘Far’

Music • Views: 2,294

Some of the reviewers at Amazon seem to think Regina Spektor’s new album FarExternal Image is “over-produced” — no way. This is a little gem of idiosyncratic pop music. Sparse instrumentation, and just enough production to make it right.

ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com

I bought the album at Amazon MP3External Image, where it’s $7.99 compared to Apple iTunes’ $13.99. The iTunes version includes three bonus tracks, but it’s still cheaper to buy them individually after getting the rest of the album at Amazon.

You know damn well our country spends a fortune translating forms into Spanish at least!

The French have millions of tourists visit their country every year, they could have had these police report forms in another language.

Plus America is a huge land mass, France is smaller, and I was only a couple hours away from their southern neighbor, Spain. I was speaking languages spoken on either side of their little country and they acted as if I was speaking Klingon.

Wrong. The diplomats got the invite, not the mullahs. Even if the regime were overthrown they'd eventually replace the ambassadors and other political appointees but the embassy staff would be more or less the same folks. I'm not a big fan of the July 4th invites, I think the only way they'll end up being a positive thing is if the Iranians overthrow the government before July 4th. Let's hope they do, I'd love to see it.

I think he's been planning this for a long time, hence granting the ok for the sale of jetliner engines by Boeing. My thought is, if it is true that Assad has control of the country and is not in danger of being overthrown, what benefit are economic sanctions (other than weapon/component embargo?) Since Hamas/Hezbullah remain in Syria only at Assad's pleasure, Obama offers normalization of trade relations in exchange for Assad giving H&H the boot, etc... .

Okay, but try in three languages (other than English) at 3 am with American cops, and see where that gets you. You MIGHT get lucky and have a Spanish-speaking cop. If not, forget it.

We do not stack up well as a nation at learning foreign languages. Es triste, pero es la verdad.

re: #95 Killgore Trout

" This special 280-page edition not only contains an abridged Origin of Species but also has a 50-page Introduction that reveals the dangerous fruit of evolution, Hitler’s undeniable connections to the theory, Darwin’s racism, and his disdain for women. It counters the claim that creationists are “anti-science” by citing numerous scientists who believed that God created the universe—scientists such as Einstein, Newton, Copernicus, Bacon, Faraday, Pasteur, and Kepler. It has many original graphics and (as it says on the back cover) is designed for use in schools, colleges, and prestigious learning institutions. The back cover lists the above information as well as saying the book contains “Information on Intelligent Design vs Evolution.” We want to get one million copies into the hands of students and professors in colleges and universities throughout the U.S. Let’s see if they try to ban Darwin’s Origin of Species. That would be interesting. "

Although I agree that splitting Syria from Iran would be an obvious motivation. I think Assad would do it (distance Syria from Iran) becasue Iran is not a natural ally. It is an alliance of convenience. I think there is a distinction between Syrian and Egyptian civilians, the former wanting to conduct business more than anything else in my opinion.

Ouch, that's a run of bad luck.

My school in Tehran

Someone once called the Community School "a laboratory of democracy at work." Besides the Americans, there were many students from prominent Iranian families and children from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, whose families were living temporarily in Tehran. Their parents were diplomats, exiles, military, professionals, oil industry personnel, etc. CHS represented 28 nationalities and eight religions, yet everyone studied and played well together, barely aware of the differences between one another or of the tensions among many of their homelands. Christians, Jews, Moslems, Zoroastrians, and Sikh blended without a problem. Above the school entrance, in beautiful Persian calligraphy, were the words from the Book of John, 8:32, "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Some students learned the United Nations pledge of allegiance to the individual countries and flags and sang the United Nations hymn, the "Song of Peace," set to music by the Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius.

I never learned the UN part......

LOL!

We had one kid's dad who had all the tribal facial scarification, we all thought he looked scary!

I briefly dated a young woman from Sierra Leone (yes, OLT, I know... shut up!) who had just two small, discreet (if you can imagine) such scars. They were actually kinda... sexy.

DHS report is like a sore tooth with many vets.

Any vet who endured that shitstorm from the left during the Vietnam War can be allowed a touch of prickliness about it. Thanks to the efforts of men like Lilyea, and the performance of our military in the Gulf War, we've had our pride restored. Reading that piece of shit sparks an intense feeling of resentment that to all appearances is a resumption of the meme.
THAT is what you were seeing from the vets in the uproar after it's release. I'd suspect there's people in this room right now who understand too damn well what that felt like. Don't need to have a reprise, imo.
Agree with what I posted or no,but it's truth....

Speaking of Fat Lesbians there's been a flurry of work at my neighbor's house. They built a hand rail and ramp to help her get in and out of the house. Volunteers show up almost every week to do yard work. Today they came out and planted a bunch of those shiny foil balloons on her yard in the shape of a rainbow (I guess to lift her spirits). A city van pulls up everyone in while to take her shopping and stuff. I'm very glad I didn't have to get too involved.

Dude, that's.....impressive. I think. Given the "kind of's" (which infers that those not marked "kind of" are GOOOOOOAL!) and the range of countries involved one can only pray that your junk is healthy, intact, and not troubled by any of the gifts that keep on giving.

It's interesting to see the Freeper logic (same thinking that Koskidz were using last year. The more people are shocked by her outrageous statements the more Freepers think she's made some brilliant point. Even I've been accused of not liking her because I fear her genius.

It's so strange going over to the Freepers to see their take on Coulter's statements, and their take on this blog. It's like being in Bizarro World where everything is the opposite. It induces vertigo.

That's definitely why there are so many meltdowns happening on the Coulter thread, too. The Freepers are over here freaking out.

Is pantywaists supposed to be insulting? I know plenty of men who wouldn't mind hanging around a woman's hips all day.

On some of the more extreme blogs, the term used for their opponents is "pantywaste." Careless spelling, or an entirely different topic? Time will tell.

227 LadyEngineer  Wed, Jun 24, 2009 2:04:11pm

Back to Regina Spektor-

I saw her live last week in NYC at the Beacon Theater, as well as the free concert she gave at the Israel Birthday celebration in Washington DC June of last year.

One song she did, that I believe is NOT on the album and was done for the first time at the show last week, was a song against Holocaust deniers. My daughter felt that performing the song was very brave and would cost her with her Amnesty Int type fans. That assessment is very depressing.
