Governor Sanford’s South American Mystery Tour

Politics • Views: 2,561

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford’s lost weekend mystery tour may not have been the best idea, politically speaking: The Fallout from Sanford’s South American Adventure.

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford’s South American getaway may be every chief executive’s dream — ditching security, escaping the bubble and wandering through a foreign country like any regular tourist. President Obama, who complains regularly about the bubble, may be secretly admiring Sanford’s escapade.

But for Sanford, the summer adventure to Argentina — no, he was not on the Appalachian Trail as his aides incorrectly told reporters — is now a major personal embarrassment and there is no doubt far more to this story than anyone has heard so far. For a Republican Party down on its luck, Sanford’s draws more unwelcome publicity to a party that needs but can’t seem to get any good news.

The enterprising State newspaper in Columbia, S.C., cracked the case of Sanford’s whereabouts by staking out the Atlanta airport, where one of the paper’s reporters found the absent governor upon his return to the United States. After days of misinformation, the real story of his whereabouts may be out, though there will be numerous questions he’ll now have to answer.

“I wanted to do something exotic,” he said in explaining how he, supposedly, at the last minute, decided to head to South America to recharge after a grueling legislative session in which he lost a major battle with lawmakers, who forced him to accept money from Obama’s economic stimulus package that he wanted used to pay down debt.

Sanford told the State newspaper he’s done this before, taking trips to Greece and Turkey, with friends or solo, as a way to clear his head and chill out. So, it was merely an exotic getaway. How nice. His office has scheduled a news conference for Wednesday afternoon. Whether the full story emerges then remains to be seen.

Put aside what Sanford’s wife and family knew — his wife claimed she did not know where he was but was not worried about him — as that is a between husband and wife. Whatever his wife knew, it was a serious mistake in judgment for the leader of the state to simply drop out of sight for nearly a week.

All the twit had to do was say he wanted some time off, sign over authority to the Lt. Gov. for 4-5 days and then take off.

9 quickjustice  Wed, Jun 24, 2009 11:04:05am

I agree that Sanford and his staff egregiously mishandled this. He seems to have been exhausted from the legislative session, and in need of R&R. If he went on an exotic vacation by himself, that's understandable. What's not understandable is the disastrous handling of the media with false stories going out, creating suspicion of something more sinister.

OK, I am really confused about this.

Why did he ditch his security? How could he head to Argentina on the spur of the moment? Why did his aides hand out incorrect information? I don't confuse "Appalachian Trail" and "Argentina", even on a bad connection!

My democrat governor Tim Kaine is AWOL every week serving as Obama's DNC chairman on Virginia's dime.

Our state is in shambles and our governor is shirtless in Miami at the union-owned Fountainebleau hotel, raising money for Dems.

Kaine's office won't release Kaine's travel records, so the GOP has requested them through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Democrats don't mind Gov. Tim Kaine ducking out on his day job and HIDING his travel records, so long as Kaine is raising dough for Dems.

In Texas, the governor isn't needed much at all - there's a legislative session every two years.

LOL! Actually, years ago I was on a flight from Honolulu to Los Angeles. My seat mate was a terrific little old Jewish man. When the pilot came on to announce the weather and flying time to L.A., this little old guy turned to me and said "So why should we care about the weather in Los Angeles?"

I said, "Uh, cause that's where we're going."

Oops. Turns out he'd gotten the gates confused. He was actually trying to get to Seattle.

(Probably couldn't happen today, but it caused quite a stir when the flight attendants found out.)

My wife and I almost got on a plane to France for our honeymoon. We had reservations for a resort in Mexico. We were sitting there and could not figure out why everyone had shirts in French. It turns out that they changed our gate and we never bothered to check. We didn't realize until they were boarding and the little machine at the gate spit our ticket out. Thankfully, that was not foreshadowing of our marriage.

Sanford is a creationist, which makes him a fundamentalist Christian. If he's taking off for Argentina to commit hanky-panky, that'll end his political career by destroying his conservative- Christian political base.

Yes. Even in the early 60's, there were accordions that were attached to tube driven tone generators, in practice, it was an electronic organ disguised as an accordion. I had one, called a Cordovox. You would be amazed at who they sounded.

And today, it is even more amazing, with digital accordions and midi connections and all the fancy stuff you can attach to this kind of accordion.

Look at how much doing something has cost us when 0 told us if they didn't act quickly on the stimulus we would hit 8% unemployment. I can't wait until we drop back to 8%. Please explain how President Bush having a growing economy and low unemployment= worst President ever, 0 having rising unemployment, soon to come hyper-inflation, and out of control government spending= the second coming of Jesus Christ

Well, Bush's economy was growing at an anemic rate, and employment was growing too slowly.

176 lawhawk  Wed, Jun 24, 2009 11:33:54am

Well, if there are issues about his electability to higher office - like say the White House - this answers them. His temperament isn't one that is conducive to being President if he's got to take a vacation all by his lonesome (without the wife and kids) to clear his head. President is a 24/7/365 job, and we don't need someone who has to go on vacation after the slightest bit of work.

South Carolina doesn't exactly have the most grueling legislative calendar, with 80 Acts enacted into law. They worked from January 13 through last week. No major earth shattering legislation either. It was the typical tax stuff too.

Vermont had 60+ acts, with a bunch of municipal acts, and a fraction of the population, and they imposed a bunch of new taxes and credits.

Colorado saw quite a bit more passed, and they adjourned in May. I'd say that was a more grueling session, and they imposed new taxes, credits, and other adjustments.

Right, I don't think any politician needs to give reasons for taking a few days off, unless he/she was supposed to address the state congress or some other function mandated by law.

Sanford Trainwreck Presser Liveblogging Pt. 2

2:26 PM ... Still listing through apologies. Looks like he's in full let it all hang out mode, put all the cards on the table mode ... Lot of apologies. He may just try to keep finding people to apologize to for so long that everybody gets bored and leaves and he never has to say what he's apologizing for.

2:28 PM ... This is genuinely painful, sad ... moving on to discussion of "God's laws".

I didn't know about the affair when I wrote that, but my point was that even a CEO should be able to take off. If you have a well run company where you have responsible people who are empowered to make decisions than taking a few days is no big deal. Now I am NOT suggesting that a state is a well run company - in fact nothing happens quickly and I would guess that there is nothing that couldn't wait until he gets back.

But unless there was a sexual identity component to these email exchanges, I really can't imagine how strong a bond can develop, that would prompt him to travel there for a stranger (unless she's a Brazilian supermodel). They may share some common fetish, or something! I don't want to sound Andrew Sullivanesque about this, but the whole thing still reeks.

He seemed reluctant to use the pronoun "her" or the term "this woman" in reference to the person, and resorted mostly to gender neutral terms.

I think it was darn considerate of him to go half way around the world to stick it where the sun don't shine.
This is precisely the kind of sensitivity that we need in politicians.
And if the object of his affections was a real hottie of legal age (to be proven with appropriate photographs), then I say he should be rewarded for his good taste with a complete pardon and perhaps a book deal.

I couldn't care less about the affair or where he was. It's the fact that he was MIA from the job as governor for five days without passing authority on to anyone that's astounding to me. What if SC had been hit by a natural disaster, a tornado outbreak or something, and somebody needed to get on the horn to the president and have it declared a disaster area? In ancient times, women's mortality rates were nearly as high as men's for comparative age groups, at least in Asia Minor and Europe. Most men died violent deaths (war, ethnic cleansing, crime); most women died of childbirth. These are mostly young women, teenagers. Not widows.

It's not the women that sought to share proportionally scarce men. It was men who sought harems. Think the Ottoman Sultans, the Chinese emperors, kings of Siam, etc. ... Think the animal kingdom, gorillas.

It doesn't make sense that "the media" would ignore Edward's affair because of liberal bias. If I own the NYT (and no doubt this is a known liberal paper) I sure as hell don't want Edwards to win the primary and THEN have news of this come out. The other question is, if it was appropriate to expose Edwards prior to the exposure by the National Enquirer, why didn't the non-liberal media do so? Fox news, just for example.

In terms of religion he is allowed to sin and be forgiven. But as people we have to question his judgment and his views. He does look like a classic hypocrite if there ever was one.

BUT, Fox news and conservative blogs wouldn't be shy about the Edwards affair, and they also held their fire until the National Enquirer story. Since both sides did this, I have to believe there was only rumors.

I say it again, the affair isn't the problem. It's abandoning his post without signing authority over to his Lt. Gov. that's a big deal. The affair is window dressing.

Sanford is a creationist, which makes him a fundamentalist Christian. If he's taking off for Argentina to commit hanky-panky, that'll end his political career by destroying his conservative- Christian political base.

Is it just me, or just the MSM, but there seem to be an awful lot of these Conservative Christian leaders growing up gay. Maybe a lot of that anti - gay Christian rhetoric is just based on self denial.

Men are always up to something crazy.... Yea, I should have remembered about the child birth mortality rate, true. Any truth to the war theory I put forth? I can't remember where I heard that one.

It's a meme in widespread circulation, and it does carry quite a bit of weight actually, though in a less literal sense than most realize: the ancient world was brutal and barbaric, conflicts were resolved through overwhelming force, rulers/monarchs were absolute. In general, force was a valuable currency; trade and cooperation, locally limited and short-lived. Hence, it was a zero-sum-game world. Warlords or powerful wealthy men got whatever they wanted. A harem included. Beta males got nothing. Women were content with the arrangement given the circumstances. The logistics of sexual reproduction also make the arrangement affordable. It's how it works in the animal kingdom too. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer. Only a trade-based productive society brings some balance to the mix.

He took off for several days without telling anyone he was leaving. Most people would get fired for that, let alone a man who was supposed to be RUNNING A STATE.

Well said. To be fair though, there's no way for a large entity to police all its members or to be responsible for each and every member's personal failings. Knowing that however, I'd be loathe to play the family values card.

Not necessarily so, as forgiveness is also big in the Christian community. Unlike Eliot Spitzer (who pretty much pissed off EVERYONE) Sanford does have some political capital left to spend.

But any national aspirations Sanford may have harbored probably just evaporated.

I don't really think he could clinch the 2012 Presidential nomination, but at this point, its probably not even worth it for him to try.

Its not up to you or I to forgive him, since we are not the ones he offended. Only his wife and family can do that.

As to remaining governor, its up to the people of SC to decide if they still want Sanford or not.

From my view on the ground here, I have to say there is a lot of disappointment in the air. People think he let the State of SC down, and that's not good for him.

OMG, with a man or a woman?

I just watched the video of his Sanford's press conference (or at least the beginning of his the Governor's press conference). For a minute I was thinking "closet homo" because of the way that he the individual at the heart of this controversy would resort to circumlocutions and gender-neutral words in talking about his boyfriend girlfriend lover the other person involved in the affair. But a couple minutes in, he the political entity giving the press conference did finally use the feminine pronoun in reference to his their mistress.

Ergo, Sanford is heterosexual, but apparently spends a lot of time hanging out with closeted gay men and unconsciously picking up their speech habits.
