Video: Bachmann Too Loopy for Beck?

Video • Views: 3,596

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) goes on the Glenn Beck Comedy Hour, and repeats her contention that the government might use census data to round people up and put them in internment camps.

Beck closes his eyes and shakes his head when she says this, and almost immediately cuts her off — but I can’t tell if he was actually taken aback, or if he was coming up on a hard break. It’s not too different from the stuff Beck himself serves up on a regular basis, so I don’t know why he would have objected.

Youtube Video

Bachmann: Here’s the other thing that will happen. From history, the United States government between 1942 and 1947 passed the second War Powers Act … they used the US census information to round up the Japanese and put them in the internment camps.

Beck: [closes eyes, shakes head] OK…

Bachmann: Americans were told that they wouldn’t have their information used against them … they did.

Beck: OK, uh, thank you very much.

Keep in mind that this nutburger is an elected member of the US House of Representatives.
Conspiracy theories seem to be taking over the world. Indeed, they are the whole cultural underpinning for despots like Chavez and Ahmedinejad. Are we headed the same way? Is the world headed for a showdown between rival brands of paranoid lunacy? Stay tuned.

Certain science fiction writers foresaw a world of ever-decreasing intelligence, Cyril Kornbluth’s classic The Marching Morons being the best known.
I can’t remember right off hand if anyone wrote about a world dominated by paranoid commercial fantasies, but it wouldn’t surprise me. Does anyone know of an example?

I try to avoid listening to Rep. Bachmann because she is almost a wild-eyed lunatic, imho, on almost every damn issue. Even on issues I might at least agree with some of what she says, I want to change my mind after listening to her.

If it were my show, I would not want her on unless I planned to devil’s advocate her or have an opposing person to hand her her hat.

Beck says he’s doesn’t want to fill it out either but he’s afraid they’ll take away his guns. The only reason he cut her off is because they had to take a break to sell boner pills and detergent.

20 songbird  Sat, Jun 27, 2009 12:08:47pm

Nut job, or no, a lot of people are concerned about the intrusiveness of the census questions.

Many are very concerned that the White House has taken over what is supposed to be a Department of Commerce job.

Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution provides for an “actual enumeration” and a statute passed by Congress provides that the duties under this clause are to be performed by the secretary of commerce.

I wish there were some investigation into Obama’s decision to have the staff of his choosing to do the census.

Unfortunately - no, wait - fortunately, I’m not TV people. :D When I find out about some show I should watch (say a friend tips me off to True Blood or I find out AI is good this year), I watch it on my comp.

I stopped listening to President O’s speeches, because they took me back to junior high, when I was a debating champ (not bragging). I kept wanting my turn.

50 Sharmuta  Sat, Jun 27, 2009 12:20:53pm

For Pete’s sake. The last census they door knocked too, and no one used the census information to round up anyone after 9/11. I filled out my form, and they still knocked and asked if I’d sent it in. Then they asked about my neighbor because they didn’t know, and he didn’t answer the door, but they weren’t interested in me telling them his statistics when I offered. They said they had to confirm with him. Bachmann comes off as paranoid in video spouting this stuff.

Services which belong at the local, not federal level.

Services which the congresscritters use to buy votes.

Services which like Social Security and the rest are a ponzi scheme.

The census is for apportioning congressional districts, members of congress a number which has been frozen since ‘35, and electoral votes. It’s morphed into a political gerrymander charade to ensure the two party money cult always has dependents who will vote for them and goodies to buy the votes.

Boycotting the census won’t matter in the long run, but every time a citizen says enough, it something.

As a TV producer myself, and a watcher of all 3 news channels, I am familiar with Beck’s circus act. I have said on more than one occasion that Roger Ailes needs to keep Beck on a shorter leash or his entire news network will have its credibility tainted. And I have noticed that in the past 2-3 weeks, Beck has dialed back the craziness a bit. When he does that, he is much more watchable because he ALWAYS did some things I was OK with. For instance, his muckraking on ACORN has been better than anyone else in the national media. So I am giving Beck the benefit of the doubt on this one. And I hope he continues to demonstrate the more sober approach that he has recently shown.

Could I get a link for the comment that the White House is choosing the census staff, that’s a new one. Last I heard, the dept of commence was running the census as usual, just reporting to the POTUS as was done before. Reporting the census is quite different from choosing the staff.

For those who want to know what is under consideration, the official census.gov site has a pdf of the questions planned for the 2010 Census and American Community Survey. This is the doc submitted to Congress in 2007 (for consideration, etc.)

Questions Planned for the 2010 Census and ACS.

Just click the link and open the pdf.

Will all these questions end up on the Census/ACS? Don’t know.

Think I’d rather read that than take Beck or Bachmann’s word on anything.

Obama’s not going to do anything about conservatives not filling out the census. Why would he want them counted? Enforcement efforts will be in poor urban areas where bureaucrats and ACORN know how to operate.

77 MandyManners  Sat, Jun 27, 2009 12:34:15pm

President Barack Obama Thursday nominated Robert Groves, a sociology professor at the University of Michigan, to be the next director of the Census Bureau, a choice that riled some Republican lawmakers.

Mr. Groves, who served as associate director of statistical design at the Census Bureau from 1990 to 1992, is an expert on “sampling,” the practice of adjusting statistics in order to compensate for undercounting. This tends to bolster the number of people counted in urban areas that are typically Democratic strongholds. The census, which takes place next April, is used to apportion seats in the House of Representatives and disburse billions in federal dollars.

Obama’s not going to do anything about conservatives not filling out the census. Why would he want them counted? Enforcement efforts will be in poor urban areas where bureaucrats and ACORN know how to operate.

Perhaps Obama might get rid of ACORN and hire the guys who did the recent canvassing for dinnerjacket in Iran. They were pretty good.

Could I get a link for the comment that the White House is choosing the census staff, that’s a new one. Last I heard, the dept of commence was running the census as usual, just reporting to the POTUS as was done before. Reporting the census is quite different from choosing the staff.

“There is historic precedent for the director of the Census, who works for the commerce secretary and the president, to work closely with White House senior management, given the number of decisions that will have to be put before the president. We plan to return to that model in this administration.”

Hope this helps.

President Barack Obama Thursday nominated Robert Groves, a sociology professor at the University of Michigan, to be the next director of the Census Bureau, a choice that riled some Republican lawmakers.

SNIP

When Bush tried using sampling in 2000, the Supreme court ruled against it for representatives:

“In January, however, the Supreme Court ruled against the use of statistical sampling methods to obtain population figures for determining how many of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives go to each of the 50 states. At the same time, the court upheld a law that mandates the use of statistically adjusted figures, when feasible, for all other purposes, such as distributing $180 billion in funds for federal programs and determining congressional and state district boundaries.”

Last week, the Census Bureau responded to the court’s decision and unveiled a revised plan for Census 2000 that would, in effect, provide two population totals. After counting “everyone it possibly can,” the bureau would then conduct a quality-check survey, says Kenneth Prewitt, Census Bureau director. The new plan, however, could push the cost of conducting the census from $4 billion to more than $6 billion.

However, it seems okay to me for folks to be a little concerned about including info on questions like:

At what location did this person work last week?
What time did this person leave home to go to work last week? (hour, minute, a.m/p.m)
How many minutes did it usually take this person to get to work from home last week?

Fine, no problem with those questions.

Oops!

And I’m supposed to hand this info over to someone showing up on my doorstep?

that’s not entirely wrong, but I take issue with some of it. Yes, the loudmouths get a lot of attention, but the loudmouth who says something SUBSTANTIAL is the one who becoms a star. Rush Limbaugh is the number one example. But even those who don’t like Rush have to admit he is talented and very sharp. So is keith dobermann on msnbc. I hate keith’s politics, but he knows how to persuade many of his viewers. But if a loudmouth with no brains tries to make it, they fizzle quickly. On the other hand, if you are going to put the loudmouths on the air, you MUST make room for the VD Hansons of the world. You have to have some variety and balance in your programming. My favorite news show is that 6:00pm Brett Baier show on FOX. It always offers sober perspectives. It’s the best news show on TV. Hanson is from that school.

Good point, and the justification Bush tried to use to statistically adjust the census for a undercount. I tended to agree with it in principle, but the Supreme Court ruled it could not be used to apportion Representatives, just funding.
If they miss you, you don’t count.

109 MandyManners  Sat, Jun 27, 2009 12:51:51pm

The U.S. Census is supposed to be free of politics, but one group with a history of voter fraud, ACORN, is participating in next year’s count, raising concerns about the politicization of the decennial survey.

The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now signed on as a national partner with the U.S. Census Bureau in February 2009 to assist with the recruitment of the 1.4 million temporary workers needed to go door-to-door to count every person in the United States — currently believed to be more than 306 million people.

A U.S. Census “sell sheet,” an advertisement used to recruit national partners, says partnerships with groups like ACORN “play an important role in making the 2010 Census successful,” including by “help[ing] recruit census workers.”

The bureau is currently employing help from more than 250 national partners, including TARGET and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), to assist in the hiring effort.

President Obama said in his inaugural address that he planned to “restore science to its rightful place” in government. That’s a worthy goal. But statisticians at the Commerce Department didn’t think it would mean having the director of next year’s Census report directly to the White House rather than to the Commerce secretary, as is customary. “There’s only one reason to have that high level of White House involvement,” a career professional at the Census Bureau tells me. “And it’s called politics, not science.”

The decision was made last week after California Rep. Barbara Lee, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, and Hispanic groups complained to the White House that Judd Gregg, the Republican senator from New Hampshire slated to head Commerce, couldn’t be trusted to conduct a complete Census. The National Association of Latino Officials said it had “serious questions about his willingness to ensure that the 2010 Census produces the most accurate possible count.”

Every state that had an interest in it’s constituency collected it since the times of the Romans. It all has to do with taxes, and how much the gov thinks is out there for the taking. If it isn’t the number of citizens, it’s the acreage withing the domain, to how may windows does each building have. Read some history of “revenue” taking during the European Renaissance and you have a lead on it.

Most of us will get a 10 question short form. The longer one trying to find out how bath rooms we have, central AC and the rest will only go to a smaller percentage.

2010 Census is Different

The Census Bureau has changed the way it conducts the national count.

Goodbye Long Form

In the past, most households received a short-form questionnaire, while one household in six received a long form that contained additional questions and provided more detailed socioeconomic information about the population.

The 2010 Census will be a short-form only census and will count all residents living in the United States as well as ask for name, sex, age, date of birth, race, ethnicity, relationship and housing tenure – taking just minutes to complete.

The more detailed socioeconomic information is now collected through the American Community Survey. The survey provides current data about your community every year, rather than once every 10 years. It is sent to a small percentage of the population on a rotating basis throughout the decade. No household will receive the survey more often than once every five years.

View more information on the American Community Survey.

I think that such detailed information has more to do with social engineering than taxes. I’ll reserve my final judgement ‘til I receive my official census form, which I will complete.

One thought on the WH taking over the Census. I wonder if Obambi thinks it will give the appearance of fairness to the African-American voters who in the past were denied accurate representation. I think it was the way past, but there are a lot of hurt feelings still he may want to address to gain political power.

Yes, if I read it correctly, to 1 out of 6 households?

As I noted above, I don’t have a problem with the census, and I really don’t have a problem with the American Community Survey. What makes me a bit uncomfortable is the ability to tie that much in-depth personal information to a specific person, at a specific address.

One thing that could be done to ease folks’ discomfort would be to create an American Community Survey form that is linked only to something like a zip code. That way, the data is available, it’s tied to a geographic area, but is not tied to an individual by name and address.

153 Gus  Sat, Jun 27, 2009 1:10:07pm

re: #96 Lynn B.

I did find the following in the census site:

The American Community Survey is conducted under the authority of Title 13, United States Code, Sections 141 and 193, and response is mandatory. According to Section 221, persons who do not respond shall be fined not more than $100. Title 18 U.S.C. Section 3571 and Section 3559, in effect amends Title 13 U.S.C. Section 221 by changing the fine for anyone over 18 years old who refuses or willfully neglects to complete the questionnaire or answer questions posed by census takers from a fine of not more than $100 to not more than $5,000. The U.S. Census Bureau may use this information only for statistical purposes. We can assure you that your confidentiality is protected. Title 13 requires the Census Bureau to keep all information about you and all other respondents strictly confidential. Any Census Bureau employee who violates these provisions is subject to a fine of up to $250,000 or a prison sentence of up to five years, or both.

Googling Title 18 U.S.C. Section 3571 finds your link. I guess it is up to $5,000. I had an inkling that it might have been amended.

The White House is NOT “taking over the census.”

Census plan gets counted out.

The Obama administration has scrapped plans to have the Census Bureau director report directly to the White House, assuaging the concerns of lawmakers.

Commerce Secretary nominee Gary Locke met with key senators Wednesday to reassure them that the 2010 census would be managed by the Commerce Department, and not the White House.

Locke met with Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) and ranking member Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) to defuse concerns that had arisen over stewardship of the census.
Locke provided two key assurances, according to aides: that the census would stay out of the White House’s hands, and that so-called sampling will be used minimally, as an accuracy check.

A Commerce Department source confirmed Locke’s message to Capitol Hill.

I was worth a fortune to the advertising agencies and the gov could guestimate tax revenues based on license fees and other taxes.

I think the whole census controversy is much ado about nothing. I don’t think it’s going to make a bit of difference whether you fill the damned thing out or not. The politicians in power are going to rig it one way or the other to come out in their favor. Mark my words, any redistricting based on the census will magically strengthen the Democrats and weaken the Republicans. It’s way easier to rig a census count than it is to rig an election, considering that the census is entirely the responsibility of the Executive Branch of the federal government. There is no real oversight. And, in addition, Obama has already made clear his intention to politicize the census by running it directly out of the White House. I believe that this may be the firewall that the Democrats use to prevent a loss of power in 2010. And I think that counting illegals will be a big part of it.

I got the ACS sent to me 2 years ago and threw it away. Ignoring the intrusive nature of the questions, to actually fill this thing out properly would take hours. The sent someone by and I told them I was declining to respond. I got a letter from the regional director telling me that responding was MANDATORY. I sent him a letter telling him how many people lived in my house and their ages. Nothing from them since.

Lucky me…back in 1990 I also got the long form.

BTW, my cousin owns The Scooter Store. He says that they get a slew of constant requests for signed headshots of the old bald guy that is their spokesperson. That guy takes a lot of ribbing from the staff about it.

My grandfather was a banker in TX. He bought about 500 aces in north of Austin so he’d have a place to take business associates hunting. No girls allowed. Women were allowed up there one weekend right before deer season opened because someone had to clean the place.

Mom says that lasted until she was in high school, since he had all daughters. They started ignoring him and hanging out there over the summer, camping withe their friends.

Congress makes the laws. The Constitution merely sets out a minimal amount of information that must be collected - it doesn’t impose any restrictions, however, on collecting more.

If you’re seriously considering refusing to answer, I’d strongly suggest researching your legal standing first. I’m not saying refusal it the wrong thing to do, only that you need to know what you’re facing before acting.

Actually, there’s counter scripture to that - husbands are commanded to “love [their] wives”…it’s just that usually, people only hear the instruction to women, and it sounds pretty oppressive without context. When I’ve heard this teaching in church, the pastor made as big (if not a bigger) deal of the instruction to men.

Even within context, it’s still very oppressive. The “husbands, love your wives” part is so vague as to be meaningless in practice.

Monarchs are supposed to “love” their subjects, but the subjects are by definition submissive. The “love” goes both ways, but the “submit” only goes one way. For a married couple, that’s a recipe for abuse.

Speaking of “wives, submit to your husbands,” here’s an answer that was voted “best answer” on Yahoo, to the question “Do Christian husbands have the right to spank their wives with a belt for being disobedient?”

A: Couples (Christian or otherwise) have the right to decide if corporal punishment (or domestic discipline, as it is sometimes referred to) is workable in their relationship, but neither spouse has the right to impose it on the other against their will. If it is a mutual decision, then a belt or any other implement is permissible. I happen to be a Christian minister and in a corporal punishment relationship, but it is my wife who spanks me when I break the rules. She is not otherwise dominant, but I need help with focus and motivation, and corporal punishment works very well for me.

That’s certainly one view. I submit that there are millions of borderline assholes out there who act decently under normal societal constraints, but when presented with a Biblical framework in which they get to control another person’s life, go full-bore asshole. Human nature being to crave power, it’s an invitation to both males and females to excuse mental problems because they’re just following “God’s will.”

Do you not think the “submission” doctrine contributes to such scariness as the “corporal punishment marriage” that I reference in #263?

Sorry Kilgore, that makes no sense. Dialog requires sense and reason. Try clarity. Have you ever had to fill in a long form census? Its intrusive and none of the government business. They want you to tell them what kind of medication you are taking, details on your finances - elements of your private life that other laws forbid the government from demanding without a warrant. You do understand that what a warrant means, don’t you? All the census was designed to do was provide a count of citizens for the number of representatives to Congress. They never intended us to spill out private information to little men with clipboards. However, feel free to give all your information to the Acorn staff - I am sure they guard it with the greatest of care. Just for you.

No members of government would ever think of their own power before us. No ethical issues, no bribes, no hint of corruption could possibly happen here. No missing ballot boxes, no threatening men at the polling places, no illegal or double votes. I am a fool for thinking such things. You know best, of course. Silly me.

The census is overly intrusive as anyone who got the long form last go around can verify. The government doesn’t need to know that information. We certainly don’t need ACORN to have access to it either. What possible use do they have for how many rooms my house has and how long it takes me to drive to work? Beck says he’s doesn’t want to fill it out either but he’s afraid they’ll take away his guns. The only reason he cut her off is because they had to take a break to sell boner pills and detergent.

Probably. For whatever reason though, Beck has recently been backing off his claims about the FEMA camps and the evil libruhls coming to round everyone up for re-education.

Here he is on Fox denying he ever said anything like that:

Responding to Krugman, Beck claimed of FEMA conspiracy theories: “Never said anything like it”

Here he is on O’Reilly, denying it again:

On O’Reilly Factor, Beck again denied Krugman’s account of Beck’s remarks about FEMA “concentration camps”

Then again, this is Glenn Beck we’re talking about here. The guy has no problem believing 6 impossible things before breakfast, repeating them all before lunch, and contradicting himself about all of them before dinner.

Further evidence of Bachmanns’ born and bred political wackiness that Minnesota seems to churn out like fat welfare checks from human services to folks that can make the drive every month from Gary, IN or Chicago. She is a politician reminiscent of that ghoulish and emaciated pundit with the long stringy blond hair. Reveling in the attention heaped upon them; the more negative all the better. It feeds their rapacious desire for attention which seems to further fuel their lightning rod commentary, garnering more publicity; furthering more statements and books sales, etc., endlessly hammering away on the left and constantly inserting themselves into public discourse. Perhaps they assume their relevancy will increase with the number of soundbites that are referenced daily.

289 westman  Sun, Jun 28, 2009 11:32:22am

Where Bachmann goes wrong is in her “solution”, if I can dignify it with that term. It’s not a good idea for a member of Congress to be urging people not to cooperate with the census.

And as a political matter it’s hard to imagine a more self-defeating strategy for conservatives. (“Yeah, we’ll just not get counted! That’ll show ‘em!”)

Nonetheless, I don’t think she was actually arguing that internment camps are just around the corner. I took her to be saying that there is a danger of census data being misused, with the camps being a spectacular example from history. Hence, her conclusion: “Americans were told that they wouldn’t have their information used against them … they did.”

You put up a 2 minute excerpt that does not include her saying that “Obama administration is going to use it to put people in internment camps.” But then downding me because I have the audacity to suggest that there is some basis in fact for her concerns. I will grant you that she is a kook, but next time include those ‘kookism’ in the video. She raised two issues that appear to have merit. That is there is not ‘citizenship’ question, and that the Federal government has abuse the information in the past.
So I will repeat myself: this thread did not deal with the issues but consisted of more of the American ‘Politics of Personal Destruction.’ We all win when issues are the focus. Her ‘Kookiness’ could well have been an issue, but not based on that 2 minutes at the top of the thread.

Maybe you missed this part of what she said:

Here’s the other thing that will happen.

I did see that, but it’s not clear what “the other thing” is referencing — misuse of information or the internment itself. Given her conclusion I thought it more likely to be a reference to misuse of information. Probably there was time pressure contributing to the awkward phrasing.

In another appearance on Fox News on Thursday she answered a question from Megyn Kelly as follows:

Take this into consideration. If we look at American history, between 1942 and 1947, the data that was collected by the Census Bureau was handed over to the FBI and other organizations at the request of President Roosevelt, and that’s how the Japanese were rounded up and put into the internment camps … I’m not saying that that’s what the Administration is planning to do, but I am saying that private personal information that was given to the Census Bureau in the 1940s was used against Americans to round them up, in a violation of their constitutional rights, and put the Japanese in internment camps.

(Sorry, but the only source I could find for this in print was at [Link: www.huffingtonpost.com…]

So I really don’t think that’s the argument she’s making, given the disclaimer in this interview.

Which is not an endorsement of her, either — I think it’s irresponsible for a member of Congress to be urging people not to participate in the census. If she’s concerned about misuse of information she should be arguing for more transparency in government or something of that sort.

ACORN is a criminal organization that hires low-level criminals and homeless addicts as its private army of corruption. I will not let them in my house. These people are druggies and thieves and possibly much worse, and they will NOT get my permission to case the joint, figure out what kind of expensive stuff I have, or add me to a list of promising places to commit a house invasion.

They can fine me if they like. But I will not participate in the disintegration of my own civil rights and the safety of my wife and children.

They’re going to make up the numbers anyway, to pad their democrat districts, so what’s the difference if I refuse to answer the doorbell. They should be happy if I leave my form blank.

I wasn’t endorsing her particular brand of Wingnutiness, just pointing out that she wasn’t wrong. I still believe her assumptions on what would be done with the information today are, but when you’re right you’re right.

D’oh! Meant to say ‘information today are WRONG’.

Bravo. You nailed it!

OK, I’m a bit behind on this issue —just discovered that the Thursday interview had already been posted here on LGF. In fairness, in that clip the Congresswoman does say she is not urging people not to participate in the census.

However, when a member of Congress says that she is not answering all but a couple of questions it will naturally have the effect of encouraging non-cooperation. So after seeing that I still think her emphasis is misplaced.

Don’t be so quick to pooh pooh the census being used for Japaneses interment. I lived during that period of time. During the 2nd WW, Japanese were rounded up and put into interment camps. Read your history and don’t be so quick to say “it can’t happen”. Whats happened in the last 6 months I never thought would happen but the government has inserted itself in banking. auto companies, and are starting to go into global warming, healthcare. You are witnessing the takeover of our freedoms. You need to get involved.

I’m sorry but as much as I’ve moved to the right over the past year, I just can’t stomach Michelle Bachmann. She just always comes off like a fringe loony whenever she’s being interviewed. I’ve been so turned off by politics over the past month or so because is just gets so negative and angry sometimes. It gets lonely being polarizing.
