I will pause once again to contemplate the wonder that is the World Wide Web.
No, seriously.
Years ago (cough), in my Constitutional Law class, my prof opined that an overly-literal interpretation of the 1st Amendment would require the government to ensure that everyone have equal access to t.v. and radio broadcasting.
I'll be damned if less than two decades later, we're not awfully close to that.
Pretty amazing.

Kids today have it so easy. My first piece of "semi-serious" recording equipment was a vacuum tube TEAC reel to reel 4 track. Punching in and out was really tricky and often made loud pops. Bouncing tracks was done by plugging and patching cables. I still have it and it still works. Haven't used it in 10-15 years but I can't bring myself to sell. it.

This is one reason firearms are so appealing. They don't get obsolete very quickly.
My Kimber M1911 clone is essentially the same model used by USMC Special Ops today. That that "1911" number is no coincidence.

If you haven't seen it yet, there's a link on Instapundit, which leads to a link on Taxprof Blog, which will give you this (warning, pdf file):
How Much Does President Obama’s
Budget Redistribute Income?
It's a special report from the Tax Foundation, complete with charts and graphs that will depress you.
Throughout last year’s presidential campaign
and continuing through President Obama’s
first two quarters in office, income redistribution
has been a hot-button topic among
policymakers, the media, and the general
public. The issue was explicitly brought to
the forefront of the campaign debate during
the now infamous exchange between then-
How Much Does President Obama’s
Budget Redistribute Income?
candidate Obama and “Joe the Plumber,”
who asked why the candidate wanted to tax
people like him who own a business that
makes $250,000. Obama replied, “... I think
when you spread the wealth around, it’s
good for everybody.”
Well, to be fair, he did warn us.
Key Findings:
• Families’ share of tax burdens is compared to their share of government benefits, by income class, yielding a comprehensive measure of income redistribution. Customarily, only tax burdens are analyzed by income class. We apply this framework to President Obama’s Fiscal Year 2010 Budget released in May.• In FY 2012, when President Obama’s policies have taken effect, income redistribution from the top-earning 1 percent of families will rise by an average of $64,000 per family. Families in the 95th-99th percentiles would pay slightly more, almost $2,000 per family.
• On average, a family in the top 5 percent would have an additional 1.8 percent of its market income redistributed as a result of President Obama’s policies (compared to baseline); for the top 1 percent only, that figure is over 3 percent.
• President Obama’s policies would reduce the amount of income redistribution from families in the 60th-95th percentiles.
• President Obama’s policies would increase the amount of income redistribution to families in the bottom 60 percent of the population, especially the bottom 20 percent.

Black powder is more fun, more "intimate" with the firearm, slower pace you appreciate each shot more.

Look on the back, near where the power cord goes in. See if there's a circuit breaker (possibly a tiny red button or rod sticking out of a hole.) If so press it, then plug the monitor into a regular outlet -- making sure the front panel switch is turned on.

Nope.
Seriously... find your nearest range, find a friend who's qualified, get over there with him/her, and put a box or two through, say, a 9mm (after appropriate basic safety instruction). You may be surprised how quickly you get comfortable.
I met a former Green Beret a few years back who recounted a story about when he was posted to some location in Central America that was near a beach. They were training the local guys, lots of open-air shooting. One day, some people from the nearby Rich Hippie Gringo colony showed up, threatened legal action if all that icky gun noise didn't cease. The Green Berets... being "think outside the box" types... instead invited the rich hippies for some range time.
After that, the biggest problem the Green Berets faced with the rich hippies was keeping them OFF the range!

Double check the outlet is live, a lamp or something you use to check easily.
If the outlet is live and the power cord is plugged the lack of little light on the front lends to an internal power supply that died.

Typically the screen will be black if there's no video data coming in.
However, at initial turn-on, it should show something like "No input" for several second ... and THEN go black.
If you didn't have a pilot light at turn-on, that says the main power supply inside the monitor is kaflooey.

Heh. I do plan to take up archery again someday. Once the economy improves I'm hoping to move to a rural area and I'll probably want to have a gun in the house. I'm not sure if I'll take up hunting, maybe I'll just buy game meat from the locals.
Out of practice longbowman here. Started with a compound, dropped down to a recurve, dropped down from there to the longbow, and I've stayed there ever since. The simpler it is, the more skill is required, but it's more satisfying. And dead quiet, too.
I guess the next step is throwing rocks. Maybe with a stop at an atlatl along the way.

First of all, I touched nothing on the monitor when I shut down the computer a while ago. I checked and the power cord was properly (still) plugged into the computer and a seperate cord from monitor to power strip was also properly plugged in.
The monitor is an LG Flatron 19 or 20" monitor (I forget which) but the light at the bottom of the monitor in the front didn't turn on either.
Well, it's a CRT, which is a lot easier and cheaper to fix than an LCD monitor. For what it's worth, the manual can be found here, but you'll have to download Djvu Viewer to access it. (there's a link on the page

There a transformer and inverter inside CRT monitors that change the incoming 120V AC to various DC voltages inside the monitor.
Some of that stuff died.

Mid-Fifties, a selenium rectifier (an early semiconductor type, used as the main power supply rectifier) blew out in my family's B&W TV. The TV had a peforated rear cover, for ventilation. When the smoke cleared (literally), there was a similar pattern of debris on the living room wall behind the TV.

re: #13 Killgore Trout
Kids today have it so easy. My first piece of "semi-serious" recording equipment was a vacuum tube TEAC reel to reel 4 track. Punching in and out was really tricky and often made loud pops. Bouncing tracks was done by plugging and patching cables. I still have it and it still works. Haven't used it in 10-15 years but I can't bring myself to sell. it.
I still have a one-track tape recorder that was "made under original 1948 patents". It is a strange beast, but worked years ago.

That's your power indicator for the monitor letting you know it's alive... or it thinks it's alive. Try hooking it back up to your computer, doublechecking all of the connections.
Main power breaker is the power cord and this breaking device must be located at a location where it is easy to operate.

Yeppers. It's an LCD. Unfortunately, there's nothing inside it that's user-serviceable. Did you smell any scorched plastic?
If the light was amber when it was hooked up to the computer there's something wrong with the connection to the computer. One thing you might try, if the two cables are compatible (odds are they're not), is swapping cables with the Dell monitor and seeing if it passes the smoke test.

I worked at a coal-fired power plant when I was in college. The only time smoke came from the the smokestack was when the boiler was being "fired" (using wood and diesel oil). Once it was up and running on straight coal, there was no smoke.
If the plant manager ever saw smoke (and he could see the plant from his house), he'd be down there in a flash: "What the Hell is going on here?!?"

Funniest (retroactive) moment: in SG-1 episode "Politics" -
Dr. Daniel Jackson: Senator, we have reason to believe that the Goa'uld are about to launch an attack, in force, in ships.
Senator Robert Kinsey: Then I think they'll regret taking on the United States military.
Jack O'Neill: Oh, for God's sake!
Dr. Daniel Jackson: Oh, you're right. We'll - we'll just upload a computer virus into the mothership.
It's even funnier when you remember the whole series is a "Stargate" spinoff...

The Foggy Bottom Trafficking in Persons report is out.
Most of the entries are no surprise, but the entry for Saudi Arabia is very grim. A very short quote (compared to the entire listing):
Saudi Arabia made insufficient efforts to protect victims of trafficking. The government operates deportation facilities for runaway workers in several cities and a shelter for female domestic workers in Riyadh. The government sometimes pays workers’ repatriation expenses but not their claims for compensation. However, many victims are not provided access to government facilities or shelter; they must seek refuge at their embassies, negotiate settlements with their employers, and independently obtain funds to return home. Of particular concern is Saudi Arabia’s continued lack of a formal procedure to identify victims of trafficking from among vulnerable populations, such as foreigners detained for immigration violations or women arrested for prostitution. As a result, victims of trafficking are often punished or automatically deported without being offered protection. Women arrested for prostitution are not interviewed for evidence of trafficking and may be subjected to stringent corporal punishment under Saudi law. Women who have been raped by their employers have found themselves imprisoned or sentenced to lashes for “moral criminality.”
Why are we even speaking politely to these people?
They list two Special Cases: Haiti and Somalia.

Vegas Rick, I hope you never have to go through the horror of laying a loved family fish to rest. Have some respect!
How to Dispose of a Goldfish That Has Died
By eHow Pets Editor
Rate: (35 Ratings)
Step 1
Use a mesh net to remove the dead goldfish from its tank.
Step 2
Place the goldfish in a small box and bury it outdoors if you prefer. Be sure to make a deep hole so neighborhood pets won't get curious and start digging.
Step 3
Place your goldfish on a saucer or wrap it up in tissue if you'd like to dispose of it the other way.
Step 4
Go into the bathroom.
Step 5
Slide the dead fish off the saucer into the toilet bowl, or throw the tissue-wrapped fish in the toilet
Step 6
Say a few words of respect to the dearly departed, if you wish.
Step 7
Flush.
Step 8
Wash your hands and the saucer (if you used one) thoroughly with soap and hot water.
Step 9
Consider changing the tank water and cleaning the net and tank thoroughly if you have other fish or want to get a new one, in case your pet died of disease.
Step 10
Ask your local pet store what type of fish tank cleaning product is appropriate for the net and tank, and clean the tank thoroughly.

Words of wisdom from the man who was - and who should be - the prime minister of Spain:
President Obama has said he refuses to "meddle" in Iran's internal affairs, but this is a poor excuse for passivity. If the international community is not able to stop, or at least set limits on, the repressive violence of the Islamic regime, the protesters will end up as so many have in the past -- in exile, in prison, or in the cemetery. And with them, all hope for change will be gone.
To be clear: Nobody in the circles of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei or Ahmadinejad is going to reward us for silence or inaction. On the contrary, failing to support the regime's critics will leave us with an emboldened Ahmadinejad, an atomic Iran, and dissidents that are disenchanted and critical of us. We cannot talk about freedom and democracy if we abandon our own principles.

Kids today have it so easy. My first piece of "semi-serious" recording equipment was a vacuum tube TEAC reel to reel 4 track. Punching in and out was really tricky and often made loud pops. Bouncing tracks was done by plugging and patching cables. I still have it and it still works. Haven't used it in 10-15 years but I can't bring myself to sell. it.
Thanks to eBay, I've got a dozen or so of those old beasts, including a ReVox A77; trust me, you'll never part with it...
