The Return of the John Birch Society

Thanks to the promotional efforts of people like Glenn Beck and Ron Paul, some long-discredited extremist groups are making a comeback — perhaps chief among them, the John Birch Society: Holding Firm Against Plots by Evildoers.

For some, that name means nothing. … Yet for others, the John Birch Society is urgently relevant to the matters of today, in its support of secure borders and limited government, its distrust of the Federal Reserve and the United Nations, and its belief in a conspiracy to merge Mexico, Canada and the United States.

This so-called North American Union, it asserts, is part of a larger plot by an amorphous, amoral group of powerful elite — including but not limited to the Council on Foreign Relations, the Trilateral Commission and the Rockefellers — to take over planet Earth. Call it the New World Order.

Some of these theories may sound like cable television chatter, or the synopsis of a Dan Brown bestseller. But Birch leaders say this plot is real, with roots going back more than 200 years to a secret, insidious brotherhood called the Illuminati, and with most American presidents among its many dupes and abettors.

“We’ve always referred to it as a Satanic conspiracy,” said Arthur Thompson, the society’s chief executive, sitting beside an American flag.

The society, which was established in 1958, says its membership has doubled in recent years, thanks to rising interest in these beliefs and, lately, to the policies of the Obama administration. But it will not provide firm numbers, other than to say it has tens of thousands of members.

“We don’t want to let our enemies know our strengths or our weaknesses,” Mr. Thompson explained. …

The society is familiar with strange twists. In late 2005, for example, Mr. Thompson became chief executive after staging a coup with the help of John McManus, the society’s most prominent member, its longtime president and an ultraconservative Roman Catholic. This prompted some ousted Birchers to disseminate recorded snippets of Mr. McManus lecturing to Catholic groups that Judaism became a dead and deadly religion after the establishment of the Catholic Church.

Mr. McManus is also heard to say that militant Jews have influenced the Freemasons, who are “Satan’s agents,” “the enemies of Christ Church” — and, in the view of the John Birch Society, part of the Illuminati conspiracy to cause world upheaval.

Mr. Thompson said that he was initially outraged by these comments, but that he now understands they were made in the context of Mr. McManus’s belief in Catholicism as the one true faith. He said the John Birch Society has Jewish and black members and has never tolerated anti-Semitism or racism, notwithstanding its notorious opposition to much of the civil rights movement.

In the last month, I’ve heard advertisements on right wing radio in Los Angeles for an event featuring the John Birch Society. And they’re just one of the groups finding fertile soil for their propaganda at “tea party” demonstrations, as the article notes:

The men and women of the society have helped to get resolutions opposed to the North American Union introduced, and occasionally passed, in state legislatures. It recently participated in many of the “tea parties” held this spring to protest government growth and spending. And, of course, every day it fights the United Nations, the Council on Foreign Relations, the elite group of insiders — evil.

It must be hard to relax. But Mr. Thompson said he draws strength from his faith, listens to music and finds other diversions. “Otherwise,” he said, “it would drive you crazy.”

And as we noted earlier this month, the John Birch Society also pushes creationism.

I just was reading an article about him on an in-flight magazine. He helped out a fellow salesperson and that person eventually was the one who got him his TV job. Sounded like a real nice guy.

That would be like saying Beck and Paul had something to do with saving the Society from a near-death experience.

They never went away.

Now, Beck and Paul may help introduce a new generation of prospective membership, but news of their death has been widely mis-reported.

Yes, but the actual war itself was completely different.

The American Left went through the motions of recreating a Vietnam War-esque anti-war movement, but it flopped because the nature of the Iraq war itself was so fundamentally different. (Especially since we won this time around.)

The bombing in Oklahoma City blew apart more than the Murrah Building. It almost halted the rising groundswell of opposition to the Clinton aministration. The anti-Clinton movement was as large, if not larger, than the current Tea Party movement, the End the Fed rallies, and other recent phenomena. The Oklahoma City bombing made opposition to Clinton and his policies seem like terrorism, deflating the average citizen’s desire to participate.

As veteran readers of The New American are aware, there is much evidence about the OKC bombing which points to elements within our own government being involved. Now with the recent Missouri and the Department of Homeland Security report detailing the dangers of right-wing terrorism, our American law enforcement community is being prepared for such an event. If the Insiders can pull it off, this could well burst the bubble of recent resistance to the march toward socialism.

Will demonstrations continue? Absolutely, because of the world we live in. Should we shun them? No. But let us understand that they can be both destructive and productive. If they are arranged by good people, then let us use them to educate and build permanent, effective organization. For organization is what is needed to combat the highly organized conspiracy we must expose and rout.

Sadly, there are conservatives who want secure borders and limited government, and who are weary of the United Nations. and we have to constantly say “hey I’m not crazy, I’m not a white supremacist, I’m don’t like the John Birch society… etc…”
it gets old.

But then the US is filled with all sorts of agendas and various political parties affiliated with those agendas. Purity is nice, but it’s never gonna happen on either side of the political spectrum.

I remember a huge controversy in Colorado Springs back in the early 60s, when it was learned that the publisher of one of the local papers was a Bircher. I remember my parents switched papers over it, since my father in particular loathed Birchers.
I can’t remember definitely which paper was which, but I think the now extinct Free Press was the Bircher rag, while the Gazette-Telegraph (now just the Gazette) was the rival.

It remains to be seen whether we’ve won or not. There has been a recent upsurge in violence in Iraq, largely in anticipation of the upcoming US withdrawal from urban areas. I would look for such attacks to increase in coming months, as all manner of bad players look to assert their power over the looming vacuum.

The difference, though, will be that the Left will be in charge this time, and will be directly responsible for the collapse of authority and the resulting loss, although they will certainly invent a tale placing blame on the Right nonetheless.

Absolutely! Same with the paulbots. Dr Sowell helped me to recognize where these people miss the mark. They want to tear down our existing society to build a utopian fantasy based on an America that never existed. They share the same underlying assumption- that a handful of people can control a complex society. The JBS thinks this is already occurring with conspiratorial groups working against us. They think they just need to be replaced with the “correct” people and ta da! Utopia. I find it frightening.

It remains to be seen whether we’ve won or not. There has been a recent upsurge in violence in Iraq, largely in anticipation of the upcoming US withdrawal from urban areas. I would look for such attacks to increase in coming months, as all manner of bad players look to assert their power over the looming vacuum.

The difference, though, will be that the Left will be in charge this time, and will be directly responsible for the collapse of authority and the resulting loss, although they will certainly invent a tale placing blame on the Right nonetheless.

The big political difference between Vietnam and Iraq was forced military conscription (the draft). That incentivized young males to oppose the Vietnam war in their own selfish interests. In previous wars, young men had joined the clergy to draft-dodge. During Vietnam, they joined the anti-war left.

And military conscription? That was due to Lyndon Johnson’s calculation that calling up the National Guard to serve in Vietnam would alienate too many voting age Guardsmen and their families (voting age was 21).

Drafting 18-year-olds who couldn’t vote was Johnson’s political solution to the problem. Lyndon Johnson’s political guile backfired on him in spades by radicalizing an entire generation.

I understand where you’re coming from, but I disagree. It’s all part of the same effort, just a different phase of it that is not yet complete. Until Iraq is capable of managing itself and maintaining it’s own against terrorists, or at a minimum has the will to do so, our job there isn’t done. Establishing a self-sustaining democracy there was the stated goal, and that goal hasn’t yet been achieved.

The war is over. Just because remnants of the previous enemy rejoin and turn up again, the war was not lost. The Iraqi army and government can lose a new war and end up back to where they started (hopefully not, and likely not), but that does not mean this conflict has never ended.

Nostalgia. I used to go past a huge “Impeach Earl Warren” poster put up by the John Birch Society (1959-60). That was their first big campaign and they sputtered along for a few years but it all went rapidly downhill after the Goldwater defeat in 1964.

Thus, no matter how much the Vlaams Belang, etc., attempt to disguise their associations, very, very few Europeans buy into it. Thus, these neo-nazi parties can’t attract huge crowds in Europe — nobody falls for it. The Tea Parties, on the other hand, were never (to my knowledge affiliated openly) with suspect political parties. Not even the Republican Party aligned itself or endorsed the Tea parties — from what I’ve read/seen, the Tea Parties seemed far closer to a ground swell of a populist movement (not under the “political sway” of any one political party, and certainly not under the control of some neo-nazi party. that’s not to say, of course, that the neo-nazis don’t wish to claim to have 100 percent control, etc. But, what’s claimed and what is are two different matters.)

Average Republicans don’t “groundswell” or demonstrate, they get out and vote on election day. The rest of the time they are paying attention to their job, their family, barbecues, pop warner football and little league. Those are the things that really matter to them. The problem is when you drag in the nutballs and make them the face of the groundswell you sure aren’t going to appeal to the suburban family types, which is the biggest part of the loss of our base the past two elections.

It’s the business park and tech park Republicans who have gone missing, and we need to get them back. Luap Nor isn’t going to do that.

Yes, this vacuum is part of the problem. On the other hand you aren’t going to see any of them step forward prominently in an off election year because they know all these crazies are out there with the long knives out ready to cut “RINO” into anyone’s hide who doesn’t agree with them. As long as Fox, Limbaugh, Beck, and others continue to carry water for these groups nobodie’s going to be the front man.
This will slowly change, over time truth wins, and the crazy becomes so detectable that people will be forced to back away from it. Then you will see some step forward. There were a lot of great speeches on the floor of congress yesterday for instance, they did give a great fight against cap and trade.
The next serious effort is going to be the senate, and I see Boehner isn’t afraid to speak up today.

On December 16, 2007, during the first political Tea Party in modern history, supporters of Ron Paul’s presidential campaign came together and raised over $6 million online in one day. That event is documented here.

I’m not sure either about any clear linkage between the protesters and Ron Paul’s politics, etc. (that is, if all or the majority of the protesters who attended the April 15 protest were aware of Ron Paul, or intended their protest to be interpreted as showing their support for Ron Paul, etc. I don’t think that’s the case…)

Actually this is probably the reason the match is being shown on ESPN. Its the USA Men’s National Team, the USAMNT just knocked off Spain in a HUGE upset, and its a FIFA Cup final (not the World Cup, but the Confederations Cup)

From our angle, its very questionable. I’ve refereed games, and when you play lineman you can sit right on the goal line and you can see if the ball clears the line.

whew 2nd half is halfway over and the game seems to have settled down.

This is just like the Spain game where Spain came out strong and looked like they might conquer in the first part of the 2nd half.

I’m giving money to Republican candidates that I support directly, and staying away from all group and pac donations at this point because you can’t tell who’s really in control. The R’s are sucking for funds right now and I really fear for them going into 2010. My wager is that they are going to have to focus all nat’l funds on Senate bids, and that House members running are mostly going to have to fund themselves. That’s going to make for some unfortunate and strange associations at the end of the day.

One thing I’ve noticed, the FIFA cup hasn’t had any players go down like they’re terribly hurt, go off on a stretcher, then 10 minutes later be back. Just pisses me off if I happen to be watching soccer on ESPN and some dude gets hit in the knee and acts like it needs to be amputated and is back 10 minutes later.

The problem with that is that each side is limited to 3 substitutions, and each sub is permanent, so they have to make sure that they are ok.

We have $309 in our kitty. Unless Neo-Nazis and Paulians are concerned with a municipal bond to expand a Technical college, or the missed deadlines of a subsidized ballpark (the two issues we’ll be focusing on for the summer) then I don’t think we have too much to worry about.

Have you been to a Tea Party? Ours is made up largely of small business/property owners, and bond issues, etc. are exactly what we want to be involved in. It’s things like that (ours is a 65 million dollar deal) that actually effect peoples lives, both by the taxes they require and the impact on other areas of the City. National politics are not on the agenda.

I only know one member of the John Birch Society and he is a bullying, lying coward. Just about everyone in our community ignores him and he gets zero respect.
On the other hand I know a lot of people who HATE President Bush. They HATE him with a passion. They don’t care about Cap and Trade, the trillion dollar deficit, or the fact that Gitmo isn’t going to close. All they care about is Bush wasn’t re-elected. Bush Derangement Syndrome has hurt us far more than a few thousand John Birchers ever will.

All I can say is that in life there are certain constants; when I was a liberal, the John Birch Society was the bane of my existence, now that I’m a conservative they still are.

I don’t know whether that’s a testament to their insanity, or my sanity. I prefer to assume the latter.

Hmmm, indeed. Are you aware that a larger percentage of Republicans voted for this act, than did Democrats. As a matter of fact, Al Gore Sr., voted against it, as did most of the Democrat Southern segregationists.

Equating Barry Goldwater with the John Birch Society and implying he was a racist is to misunderstand history and its nuances:

“Most of the twenty-seven senators who voted against the Civil Rights Act were Southern segregationists. Goldwater was not a segregationist, nor was he any kind of racist. He was, in fact, a lifelong opponent of racial discrimination. If you read a little about the man’s history, rather than cherry-picking a single fact out of his long political career, you may understand that.

Knowing history is one thing, understanding it is another.

I found this bit of information at Wikipedia under William F Buckley Jr’s entry: In 1962, Buckley denounced Robert W. Welch, Jr., and the John Birch Society, in National Review, as “far removed from common sense” and urged the GOP to purge itself of Mr. Welch’s influence. I would like to see National Review to continue to uphold this standard.

As I said, and I will repeat knowledge of historical facts and understanding history are two different things. In this very post, above, you seem to equate Birchers and Goldwater. Goldwater didn’t “claim” to not be a racist, his actions during his life speak for themselves.

Yes, I remember that cops hosed down civil rights protesters, but what does that have to do with the issue at hand? I LIVED that history and you are simply recounting what you have heard, and therein lies the difference.

I’m certainly not defending GB or the Tea Party “movement,” but I’ll just point out that you and I have been in firm agreement (re: the DHS memo) that just because right-wing extremists may target vets for recruitment does NOT mean that vets are inclined to right-wing extremism. So, without more, I’d give the same benefit of the doubt to Tea Party goers.

I am always amused by the superior attitude of so-called Progressives. It doesn’t matter whether written or stated. They are unable to even consider the possibility that they might not be right. The TEA Party movement is a better alternative than violence - a staple of lefties. The objection is not to taxation, it is to how the money is spent, and that the money is borrowed. I pity our grandkids.

In my seventy years and can’t recall how many times the politicians of all strips have told me “this tax increase will only cost you a few pennies a day”. Well, these pennies a day are now a large percent of my life energy.

Every penny taken by government from me or you is a lost of some of our freedoms.

The Framers of our constitution where very concerned about freedom for the individual. The Framers basically wanted the individual citizen to be the sovereign. Government was to be subservient to the individual citizen. And by the way, most of the Framers where Bible thumpers, i.e. Christian, Creationist, and they develop a form of government where the individual citizen has a “Bill of Rights” and the only one of its kind in the history of man kind where the individual has such freedoms.

Now it seems some people are scared of; “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

All these organizations i.e. JBS, militias, and others have been around for years. I think some where someone is planting a seed and I think maybe we’re being suckered. Could it be that Obama is looking for a fall guy if he falls on his face?

Oh, I completely agree with you. There’s nothing inherently ‘extremist’ about the tea parties. Even the video I posted is about someone who wants to infiltrate them!— not someone who officially associated with them.

The problem with the tea parties are the other groups that are hanging around them. I’m sure the vast majority of people going to them are good people who are angry about the tax issues— they’re not these other people with their weird anti-gov’t or supremacist agendas.

My only real issue with teh tea parties as a whole is that I don’t think they’re very effective as a form of political action. Maybe their organisers will figure out a way to harness that grass roots activism and anger, but so far it seems like they only focus on holding a protest and mailing teabags to Congress.

I can’t understand why there has been so little talk about the “Energy” bill that passed the House on Friday.

If the Senate passes it, the Feds will have the right to come check your house and give it an “Energy” rating. They can use such things as infrared photography, pressurized testing and other means not yet invented. Your house must pass the test before you can sell it. So, you will no longer be able to put on a little paint and granite countertops and put it on the market………. You’ll need to replace those windows and doors and insulate the attic and who know what else.

It could cost the average family $3,000. a year in added energy costs, food cost and who knows what all.

The bill is 1100 pages and invades about everything. You can read it here. IMHO, we must stop this in the Senate or we will lose millions of jobs, our products will be more expensive, etc, etc, etc.

Charles, I don’t know if you wish to comment, just some opinions of mine.

I am a big fan of the anti-jihad, and stopping creationists from teaching their drivel in our schools. I also like the relief of the animal and music posts.

What I don’t yet understand is the recent trend of posts on right wing extremists. Certainly these people are out there, but their numbers in comparison to the jihadists are vanishingly small. And in most cases, they stay on their compounds, fire their weapons, and try to feel tough.

Is the message “we have our crazies too?” Is there really a moral equivalence between Jihadists and Birchers? Achmedinijad, and Ron Paul?

One thing that upsets me about Birchers is that I cannot dismiss them entirely, as they are fans of limited govt and a degree of isolationism, both good libertarian ideas.

One thing that does upset me though is their conspiracy theories and religious zealotry.

That being said, I would welcome them at a “tea party”. I would make it clear what I think of their conspiracies, but I would want their “vote”, and they are not a violent organization. Is teh jury not out on whether they are a racist organization?

Do you think the tea parties are a waste of time? I cherish them. An important individual right is the right to property, one that Obama (and Bush before him) have done their utmost to abolish. I for one am just about ready for revolution. The founding fathers would not have stood for this “borrowing without representation.” A govt strong enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.

Can you address a few of these points and help us understand your motivations for these posts? Thanks for being out there.

It’s interesting that Charles found it necessary to include the adjective “extremist” in his characterization. Let’s not leave out “long-discredited”. That’s a nice assertion. Always suspect when not backed up by references to OBJECTIVE, non-agenda driven sources - not that any right-thinking individual would ever consider the NY Times to be an agenda-driven newspaper.

Of course Charles doesn’t cite sources for when Beck or Paul praised or promoted the JBS. Since he highly disagrees with those gentlemen’s views, they must have “promoted” them or similar groups. While the Times article mentions Beck’s having “… joined the contentious scene”, it doesn’t mention Ron Paul, nor the “promotion” of the JBS by Beck, Paul, or the other mentioned individual, Lou Dobbs.

It’s too bad Charles couldn’t have simply written: “I came across an interesting article in the NY Times discussing the John Birch Society, and it’s current and past activities. Here for your consideration is a link to the article, and excerpt.”

But hey, let’s play on emotions - get the troops all riled up. Got to be on the alert for all the DHS-labeled extreme right-wingers.

Fact: Glenn Beck wrote the foreword for a key work of JBS propaganda, by Cleon Skousen. He has praised the John Birch Society on his show on several occasions.

Fact: Ron Paul has been associated with the John Birch Society for many years, and even gave the keynote speech to their 50th anniversary meeting.

Fact: the John Birch Society is an extremist organization that advocates loony conspiracy theories, and yes — they are long-discredited by mainstream society.

There used to be a time when conservatives like William F. Buckley denounced fringe groups like the JBS. Now we have people embracing and defending them.

If anyone has an academic interest on how the John Birch society got it’s name, here is a source: John Birch on wikipedia. A pretty obscure “founder”.

Another interesting fact, bearing on the looniness of this organization - it’s founder, Robert Welch, asserted that none other than Dwight D. Eisenhower was a conscious agent of the international communist conspiracy.
