I'm slowly roasting a sirloin tip roast in a mixture of broth, oregano and garlic. About 40 minutes before it's done, I'll add a bunch of new potatoes, carrots and onions. I'll serve it with corn cut off the cob and cooked in a mess of butter, and a plate of tomatoes, green onions and cucumbers that I picked this morning.

Speaking of Apache... A few months ago I was watching bit on BBC News World Service in which a typically snotty, condescending BBC journo was interviewing an American army colonel. It concerned recent events in Afghanistan. The snobby Brit kept going on about American "Ahh-pahh--shays" ... The colonel couldn't understand what the twit was on about for a minute, then figured he meant the Apache helicopter, "Oh, you mean the Apachee helicopter?" The colonel could not hide his contempt & rolled his eyes at the idiot reporter. Sweet.

Why was the name 'Apache' chosen?
The name 'Apache' was chosen from respect for the Native American Indian tribe of Apache, well-known for their superior skills in warfare strategy and their inexhaustible endurance. It also makes a cute pun on "a patchy web server" -- a server made from a series of patches -- but this was not its origin. The group of developers who released this new software soon started to call themselves the "Apache Group".

NY Times columnist Frank Rich just did a column reminding me how I'm a second-class citizen, so what follows is part of my retort to Rich that I posted on a gay site. (Also posted a link about the Kameny letters in the LGF spin-off threads, under History.)
I’m not a second-class citizen, Mr. Rich, and never can be, because my dad and mom didn’t raise me or my sister to think of ourselves that way, under any circumstances.
But if you want an example of gay Americans truly getting fourth-class book rate treatment from their own government, here's a two-page letter that was sent to Frank Kameny by a federal personnel manager on 8 November, 1971 (on that very date, at a U.S. military hospital in Bangkok, yours truly was taking his first breath of air -- cosmic!). The letter was in response to Kameny's appeal on behalf of one Donald P. Rau, who'd been fired by the Library of Congress.
Quick synopsis of the letter: "We fired him because the presence of an employee known to engage in homosexual perversions would tarnish the federal government's image" -- that almost needs a ba-dum-CHING today.
(Also, the letter minutely catalogs a variety of homosexual acts -- "caressing, fellatio, mutual masturbation, sodomy, anal intercourse, rubbing the penis on the body" -- in a litany recited not once but THREE times, which makes me wonder if the bureaucrat who sent it was doing a little fap-fap-fap under the desk while dictating to his secretary.)
The satisfying ironies, of course, are that Frank Kameny's papers on behalf of gay rights are today preserved by the same LoC that fired Mr. Rau, the LoC now has an openly gay director, and Mr. Kameny just got a long-due apology from the gummint for his own firing.

Democrats gone wild...
Hostess at fundraiser for Busby is arrested
A fundraiser for Francine Busby, who is running for Congress, ended in chaos Friday night when sheriff's deputies responded to a noise complaint, pepper-sprayed some of the guests and arrested the party's hostess.
...
Deputies first went to the Cardiff home on Rubenstein Avenue at 9 p.m. to issue a warning after a neighbor called and complained about the loud party, sheriff's Sgt. Chuck Yancey said.He said deputies returned later when the party hadn't quieted down, and one deputy asked for Barman's date of birth so he could file paperwork alerting the city to the noise complaints.
Sheriff's officials said Barman refused to give the deputy the information, and that's when things got out of control. A crowd of about 30 to 50 partygoers surrounded Barman when he tried to arrest her, and they were able to separate her from the deputy, Yancey said.
Pepper spray was dispersed on the crowd, and the deputies were able to reach her again. At one point, a person refused to let go of Barman's leg so the deputy could take her away. Barman also allegedly punched the deputy, Yancey said.

re: #5 callahan23
Explanation in plain English required.
Hello Lizards, I back from dinner, how's y'all?
Very briefly: your web browser downloads all the contents of a web page - the pictures, text, ads, links and so forth - every time a request for that page is made. Browsers (usually) store this information in a cache; if possible, the browser will load the information out of the cache instead of pulling it over the server, because it's much faster to load things locally. To make this work, each item needs to carry an expiration date with it so the browser will use the local cache only for items which haven't expired - for example, a site's masthead - and will go back to the server to collect items whose expiration date has passed - like individual threads or articles on a blog or news site.
Apache lets you control the expiration date at the server level. The idea is to set expiration dates of "Never" or far into the future for items that don't ever change, or that don't change much, while setting other item's expiration dates to appropriate lengths of time, with the goal of minimizing server access and maximizing use of the local cache.
It can be tricky to set this up for highly dynamic sites, like this blog, but it's worth making the effort if there is a lot of traffic. Not only do client's see faster loading times, but it also reduces server load, so everyone benefits.

I didn't know so many states were named after tribes. If this list is correct, it's about half. I always thought Delaware was, but according to dictionary.com:
Delaware
U.S. state, river, Indian tribe, named for the bay, which was named for Baron (commonly "Lord") De la Warr (Thomas West, 1577-1618), first Eng. colonial governor of Virginia. The family name is attested from 1201, from Delaware in Brasted, Kent, probably ult. from de la werre "of the war" (a warrior), from O.Fr. werre/guerre "war."
Alabama: may come from Choctaw meaning "thicket-clearers" or "vegetation-gatherers."
Alaska: corruption of Aleut word meaning "great land" or "that which the sea breaks against."
Arizona: from the Indian "Arizonac," meaning "little spring" or "young spring."
Arkansas: from the Quapaw Indians.
Connecticut: from an Indian word (Quinnehtukqut) meaning "beside the long tidal river."
Illinois: Algonquin for "tribe of superior men."
Indiana: meaning "land of Indians."
Iowa: probably from an Indian word meaning "this is the place" or "the Beautiful Land."
Kansas: from a Sioux word meaning "people of the south wind."
Kentucky: from an Iroquoian word "Ken-tah-ten" meaning "land of tomorrow."
Massachusetts: from Massachusett tribe of Native Americans, meaning "at or about the great hill."
Michigan: from Indian word "Michigana" meaning "great or large lake."
Minnesota: from a Dakota Indian word meaning "sky-tinted water."
Mississippi (state and river): from an Indian word meaning "Father of Waters."
Missouri: named after the Missouri Indian tribe. "Missouri" means "town of the large canoes."
Nebraska: from an Oto Indian word meaning "flat water."
North Dakota: from the Sioux tribe, meaning "allies."
Ohio: from an Iroquoian word meaning "great river."
Oklahoma: from two Choctaw Indian words meaning "red people."
South Dakota: from the Sioux tribe, meaning "allies."
Tennessee: of Cherokee origin; the exact meaning is unknown.
Texas: from an Indian word meaning "friends."
Utah: from the Ute tribe, meaning "people of the mountains."
Wisconsin: French corruption of an Indian word whose meaning is disputed.
Wyoming: from the Delaware Indian word, meaning "mountains and valleys alternating"

The Delaware called themselves "Leni Lenape". I don't know how they also received the "Delaware" name. Here in N.Y., we also had Siwanoy, Iriquois, Manhattos, and many others. Many of the old native American (Indian) names survive out on Long Island.

Axelrod Won't Rule Out Tax Increase
President Obama's top political adviser refused today to rule out the possibility that the White House might agree to a tax hike on health insurance plans that would hit middle-income Americans.
Speaking on ABC's "This Week" program, David Axelrod declined to repeat Obama's "firm pledge" during the campaign that families making under $250,000 will not see "any form of tax increase, not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes."
Instead, Axelrod said the president has no interest in "drawing lines in the sand" on the issue of how to pay for the costly health reform plan making its way through Congress.

For anyone who will be offended, NOTICE, this is OT.
A twitterer by the name Change for Iran tells a story. I saw "tweets" by this person early on, but they stopped after a few days. Looks like this guy wants to get this story out while he can.
1:17AM finally managed to load twitter! HTTPS protocol is still blocked by some ISP & no chance getting to twitter with apps
Reza released from Hospital yesterday he is banned from university and now is a stared [marked by gov] student
my connection is very poor & I don't know how long I will be able to sustain it
he spent his first 48h of arrest at level -4 of ministry of interior building without food or water
he said all sort of people were there & some of them were just unlucky people just walking in streets and captured for no reason
Reza estimated around 200 people were in each room and there were not enough space to even sit on the ground
they didn't open the plastic handcuffs for a day & half, & randomly beat up people in there
Reza said the only exception was they didn't hit arrested people directly in the face
there was also a awful problem of only one toilet for all people in there and a impossible time limit of around 1min for each person
He said in the second day some pain cloth people came with papers forcing people to sign them
the papers were prewritten confessions all in different hand writings saying the signer is a member of organization by mousavi
and they paid to go to streets and say things & they know they have violated national security & Islam
Reza said some people sign them & some other just faked their signs & names, there were not enough confession papers for all people
around 3am day 2 they started moving people in vans, Reza said a driver was talking to a Basiji about Evin prison is full and what shoul ...
apparently they released some people on that night & move Reza & some of the selected people to Evin
it took near 3 hours to get to the prison, Reza said the driver seemed enjoys wandering in the streets
and another hour passed just standing in the row at the entrance of prison & filling out forms
in first day at Evin prison staff started searching for severely injured people & gave them some first aid
according to Reza some of the injured people already passed out and a taxi driver looked like dead by that time
all types of gov agents came & go in the next couple of days, moving people, forcing them to walk or just stand for a long time
Reza said it looked like they have no idea what should they do with so much people
a man came and say they will be released today and an hour later another came & say they will be in prison for 10year!
they ran another confession show at Evin, this time with promise of instant freedom & new accusations
Correction: *but with new accusations, not promising them!

It's always so shocking when the deer hits, especially when it's the windshield. I've used the little whistle things on the front bumper too. Not always, but have hit a deer with them. They really do often travel in pairs, so if I'm lucky enough to see the first one, I slow way down and start looking for the other.

There has been a military coup in Honduras. The president was attempting to hold a popular referendum on changing the Constitution and after a spate with the Supreme Court, the military rolled tanks through the capitol city, dispersed crowds of supporters with tear gas, arrested the president, forged a letter of resignation from him which they sent to Congress, and they also assassinated a member of Congress and head of a leftist party who was allied with him.

Since this is an open thread, I'll take advantage of the opportunity to share a few things. Work and home have been very hectic lately, so I've not had a chance to drop in here. Hope everyone is well.
I'm concerned about the cap and tax bill, the socialized medicine legislation, the threats from N. Korea, and the language from Iran. We really should be supporting those in Iran who are seeking true democracy.
I also remain concerned about the GM and Chrysler take-overs - why is no one challenging this in court on behalf of the bond holders? What happened to contract law - particularly in relation to the car dealers?
We really need to get back to the Constitution and the intent of our Founders!
Obama is trying to do too much too fast. Who will put the brakes on all this?! Who is his puppet master? Does he think his time to do all this destruction is limited in some way?
Another thought, regarding Michael Jackson - he had a great talent, but he blew his reputation. Sorry he's gone, and hope he had time to repent and truly come to Jesus.
My greater remorse is regarding Farah Fawcett - she courageously fought cancer and should be remembered for that, far more than Michael Jackson who apparently succumbed to mixing various drugs.
And then there's Mark Sanford - scumbag! Republicans must keep looking for real CONSERVATIVE standard-bearers. I vote Republican, but I am looking for real conservatives (lower taxes, smaller government, right to life, strict constructionists regarding the Constitution, gun rights, support for Israel, bringing God back to the public sphere and to the direction of our country, respect for our military and our veterans, good old-fashioned patriotism).
AFVet is calling me to bed - it's 9:30 pm, and work calls in the morning. Will check back tomorrow to see if anyone responds. Health and happiness to all!
