David Axelrod says Iran already has them.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Final question. I was talking to an ambassador from the region this week, who said now, if you sit down with the Iranians after everything we've seen in the last couple of weeks, you're going to be crushing the hopes of the young people in Iran and across the region, who listened hard to the president's Cairo speech and thought he was striking out in a new direction.
AXELROD: I think the president's sense of solicitude with those young people has been very, very clear, and we're very mindful of that. We are also mindful of the fact that the nuclear weapons in Iran and the nuclearization of that whole region is a threat to that country, all countries in the region, and the world. And we have to address that. We can't let that lie.

Bill Would Reverse Missile Defense Cutbacks in Alaska
New legislation might turn around the Obama administration's efforts to scale back a missile defense project in Alaska, the Anchorage Daily News reported Saturday (see GSN, June 17).
The U.S. Defense Department, looking to cut $1.2 billion in the missile defense budget, has decided against deploying another 14 missile interceptors at Fort Greely, Alaska. It would instead use the weapons for testing or as backups for the 30 interceptors set for fielding in Alaska and California.

By month's end, U.S. President Barack Obama must decide whether to order the building of more F-22 Raptors or let the production lines close. Only 203 of the aircraft described by the think tank Air Power Australia as "the most capable multirole combat aircraft in production today" have been built or ordered.
Support for the aircraft is not limited to defense hawks. Last month, 44 U.S. senators, including Edward Kennedy and John Kerry, sent the president a letter requesting an additional order of unspecified size to prevent the planned 2011 shutdown...

Missile intercept testing will start in August 2009.
The US Air Force airborne laser, (ABL), designated YAL-1A, is a high-energy laser weapon system for the destruction of tactical theatre ballistic missiles, which is carried on a modified Boeing 747-400F freighter aircraft.
I say bump up the schedule. Secretly try to have the YAL-1A on station for the upcoming Nork launch. If we get lucky, Lil' Kim thinks his missile went kaflooey and some Nork rocket scientists get a stay at Nork joy camp, further setting back Nork missile programs. If it doesn't work out, an Arleigh Burke down range will.

Vandenberg successfully launches Minuteman III
by 1st Lt. Raymond Geoffroy
30th Space Wing Public Affairs
6/29/2009 - VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- An unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile configured with a National Nuclear Security Administration test assembly launched from North Vandenberg today at 3:01 a.m.
The launch was an operational test to verify the weapon system's reliability and accuracy.
The missile carried three unarmed re-entry vehicles approximately 4,190 miles at speeds in excess of 24,000 mph to their pre-determined targets near the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.
Col. David Buck, the 30th Space Wing commander, was the mission's launch decision authority. Lt. Col. Lesa K. Toler, the 576th Flight Test Squadron commander, was the mission director for this test launch.
"It's really something when you see a truly outstanding team come together," Colonel Buck said. "As a former Top Hander myself, I know that the Airmen of the 576th FLTS are the best of the best when it comes to force development evaluation, and, as the 30th Space Wing commander, I know that this is the best range team in the world. I couldn't think of a better team to demonstrate the awesome capability of our ICBM fleet."

I doubt they used tubes for the emp. They used tubes cause they couldn't make microprocessors. Tubes in a plane is just loonie. Too big, too much heat.
Mig-25 that Belenko brought to Japan was tubes. Russia is about the only source left if you are restoring any vintage tube type electronics.

re: #113 Fat Bastard Vegetarian
Really. Anybody know anything about why the "goose step" is done?
It emerged from Prussian drilling regulation during the early 19th Century, where it was known as Stechschritt (literally, '"piercing step") and Stechmarsch.
The goose-step takes much practice and coordination, and so the purpose of the goose-step is the demonstration of absolute mechanized discipline and superiority. Some feel that the goose-step is also intended to look ridiculous, as George Orwell said in his 1940 essay The Lion and the Unicorn. The term "goose step" is used primarily by English-speakers. It was referenced in a 1936 editorial cartoon, "The Goose-Step".

It probably goes way back. It's a stylized form of marching for parades. Kinda like drill teams. It probably traces back to at least Napoleonic times, probably further.

I know about the "Notice to Mariners" when we shot the SLBMs into the South Atlantic. I would assume a notice to aircraft pilots, etc. Probably an office in the UN to notify countries that someone is gonna test fire a ICBM. Not doing so could cause some uproars in defense HQs around the world!

Interesting piece on Belenko, the Foxbat pilot, here:
After a thorough debriefing, Belenko began a fairly lengthy process of adjusting to the US. He was initially suspicious of nearly everything he observed, even thinking that a shopping center which included a supermarket, electronic appliance store, clothing store, and gas station was somehow a showpiece established to impress him, rather than a fairly typical feature of medium-sized towns in the US.[Link: everything2.com...]

He's the New Soviet Man, a pilot or the top aircraft defending the motherland. But the Migs are grounded because the ground crews drink the alcohol based deicer. Or how fighter pilots are force into the fields to harvest crops because the machinery was broken and couldn't be fixed.

I remember reading about that, many years ago... e.g. that he thought the supermarkets were fake. They finally convinced him (IIRC) by letting him watch operations for a while on a Nimitz-class carrier. He realized that a) this can't be faked, so reasoned b) the supermarkets are probably real, too.

Obama lacks testicular fotitude. This "my dick is bigger than your dick" facade was birthed by his advisors only after much polling and internal debate.
Come on, does anyone believe a lib's heart would be in it to actually do something constructive - like protect this country. The only surprise here is that anything gets accomplished given the liberal propensity towards "paralysis by analysis". The whole facade only reinforces Obama's delusions of adequency. Sure he greenlighted the "already approved" missle test, but I guarantee he held his nose and swallowed the bitter medicine.
Obama the Impotent; worthless and wobbly. Just look at the difference in approaches to Iran vs. Honduras.
Obama: No Clue. No Leadership.

Even when I don't fully agree with Charles or most of you, you've always given me something to think about. And unlike far too many of my fellow left-leaners, I'm insanely concerned about the way women are treated by far too many in the Islamic world and I'm not excited about seeing it squirm it's way over here.
At this point, I would say that LGF has been my main source of news because Charles does an amazingly good job of covering just about everything and of being balanced about it.
My love and respect for this site and the posters only increased after the Tiller shooting and the Holocaust Museum shooting.
I'm happy to be welcomed and promise that any disagreements we all have in the future are kept civil and sporting out of respect for our host.

Reparations Disclaimer on Slavery Apology Stirs Backlash Among House Dems
A disclaimer at the end of the Senate slavery apology, dealing with the touchy issue of reparations, is causing some dissension among House Democrats and may prevent the two chambers from coming together on the measure.
The disclaimer says: "Nothing in this resolution (A) authorizes or supports any claim against the United States or (B) serves as a settlement of any claim against the United States."
"I would not want to have any language in place that would deny anyone, any citizen, the right to address a grievance," said Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas.
"I feel that some method other than just an apology should be made. People should be made whole," Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss.

It was hard for me not to support HRC, but I've got a very deep-seated disdain for the Clintons. I REALLY wanted to be able to support the first serious major party female presidential candidate, but just not that one.
Now if Kay Hutchinson runs, I'm all about that!
I caucused for Obama, but I find the cult thing creepy and weird. He's been disappointing every since the Biden choice. I can't deny being moved by America electing the first non-white male candidate, but I'm distinctly underwhelmed.
I was a McCain supporter in 2004 but thought he flipped around too much on issues to get through the primaries this time. He totally lost me after the Palin pick (it was pandering, and I respect his choice of a woman, but I think there are better qualified women) and then again after the "fundamentals" speech and the suspending his campaign stunt.

I just caught a glimpse of the show, but my thought was that a wood plane by the Germans was more likely an outgrowth of the destruction laid on them by the Brits mosquito. My guess is that stealth was a benefit they probably were not designing for. But I sure as heck could be wrong, since I usually am...
I don't think you are. For some reason, the History Channel is committed to portraying Nazi era Germans as technical supermen and they tend to ignore some facts and exaggerate others in doing it. The Horten Ho-220 was no more advanced than the contemporary Northrop flying wings and Northrop was first by a pretty good margin (1929). The XB-35 was designed before any American knew about the Horten jet and had good stealth characteristics as well even though it was made of metal and was enormously larger. The experimental Northrop N-9M had (and still has) first flew in 1942 and has a very low radar signature, so much so that its transponder has to be used all the time. It was restored in the early 80s and was flying until July 2007 when it was damaged by an engine fire. It was not badly damaged and will almost certainly be restored again.

The excuse offered by the History Channel for the disastrously short overhaul life of German jet engines (10-15 hours if you were lucky) was that the supply of advanced alloys was reserved for the U-boat program. This strikes me as bullshit. To the best of my knowledge, the crucial materials (molybdenum, chromium, tungsten etc.) were not used in submarine construction in any significant amounts and even if they were, the Germans would surely think they could sacrifice a little bit of U boat performance to gain air superiority at a time when the submarine arm had failed and the Reich was being pounded to rubble by allied air attacks. A submarine is hundreds to thousands of times the mass of a jet engine and only a small percentage of the latter is comprised of the crucial high-temperature alloys.
Contemporary American and British jet engines had overhaul lives of 150-300 hours.

He could take part in a launch scenario however since it involves the testing of an actual launch vehicle.
A scenario example in a 2008 test launch:
The Offutt airmen entered the preparatory commands and executed the launch command/key-turn procedures during the countdown from onboard a Navy E-6B aircraft to test the airborne command post role in launching the Minuteman missile in case something happens to the missile’s ground-based launch control center. The Air Force conducts these Minuteman III flights several times each year—the most recent test in August—and periodically tests the airborne element.

Why do you say that? Certainly on paper she's definitely qualified.
I'm not impressed with what I see coming down the pike for the Republicans in 2012. Huntsman in 2016 would be an appealing candidate as well. Romney's the best of the currently line-up for '12, though, and I'm afraid that he's going to be squashed in the primary because so many of the moderate Republicans have left the party and the extreme-right base will have an issue with his faith.

Portland Indymedia: Statement on Anti-Semites and their Collaborators
Recent events have highlighted the fact that anti-Semitic organizers in Portland, Oregon are relying on "Leftist" spaces and groups to tolerate their efforts and ideology. On Wednesday, June 10, Valdas Anelauskas, a self-described "white separatist" who is involved with Holocaust-denial circles, gave a presentation to a group of sympathizers in Portland, Oregon.
And then digging deeper you get to this site ..Killtown's Secret Archive
By making its anti-Semitism explicit, and by organizing in association with racists, fascists and Holocaust-deniers, the Portland 9/11 Truth Alliance has shown its true colors. It has cleared up any confusion in anti-fascist ranks about how we should consider the organization.
It sounds vaguely familiar to a storyline here a while back. I wonder how many degrees of separation there are between these people and Jean-Marie Le Pen.

First Ensign, then the "Crying in Argentina" press conference. If Republicans want a presidential candidate who lives clean and whose family hasn't been involved in tabloid scandals, it might soon be Mitt Romney by process of elimination.
I think he overstates, but has a basic point. Some pundits added Pawlenty to the "squeaky clean" list. I would add Jindal too, but his fundamentalist religion (exorcism) and speaking persona work against him, I think.

The one really monumental triumph of Nazi-era technology, the V-2 rocket is badly tainted by the atrocities associated with its production and deployment.
It has been said that one slave worker died for every V-2 completed and that more people were killed making it than were killed by it.
Still, it was quite a remarkable device; a true ballistic missile, the first human made object to reach into space, and the direct ancestor of the Saturn rockets that put men on the Moon.
British historian Bill Gunston had perhaps the best summary of this phenomenal leap forward:
"(V-2 was) not merely ahead of all other missiles but father out in front than any single weapon has ever been in all history....
....probably the most futuristic weapon in history in that in structure, aerodynamics, propulsion, guidance, troop deployment, logistics, and the problems posed to the defense, it reached out into totally uncharted regions and found workable answers. This is not to suggest that it was cost/effective or even of real value to Nazi German. It did not stave off that country's defeat; by diverting resources it may even have hastened it. But it was the outstanding example of a weapon to which there was absolutely no answer."
The Illustrated Encyclopedia of the World's Rockets and Missiles, 1977
It is only in the 21st century that we have deployed systems that would have been capable of intercepting the V-2. At the time, it might as well have been a thunderbolt from on high.

Good point. It's my understanding that exorcisms in the Catholic church are the province of a relatively few, specially trained priests. The exorcism Jindal wrote about participating in was during his college years, I think, and was done by himself and some other students upon an apparently unwilling coed. Obama said the new efficiency standards he was announcing for lamps would result in substantial savings between 2012 and 2042, saving consumers up to $4 billion annually, conserving enough energy to power every U.S. home for 10 months, reducing emissions equal to the amount produced by 166 million cars a year, and eliminating the need for as many as 14 coal-fired power plants.
The president also said he was speeding the delivery of $346 million in economic stimulus money to help improve energy efficiency in new and existing commercial buildings.

He lives in a world where friends are disposable and political philosophy is king. He no doubt thinks the SoKor's are capitalists ingrates, and the NorKor's simply misunderstood. Lowry's speculation is probably as good as anyone elses', and maybe better than most.
Still, I remind everyone of the obeisance that Romney had to do with the SoCons by visiting Texas and giving that speech on Why-My-Mormonism-Doesn't-Matter.
No one has ever been able to tell me why candidates don't post an official resume of all they have done and accomplished in their lives. Can you imagine a side by side comparison between Obama and Romney? Huckabee has Mormon Derangement Syndrome - he was a keynote speaker at an anti-mormon conference held in salt lake city some years ago, but had to pretend he hardly knew anything about the faith (my faith)- all the while sabotaging Romney by conspiring with McCain.
And here we are.....

Good point. It's my understanding that exorcisms in the Catholic church are the province of a relatively few, specially trained priests. The exorcism Jindal wrote about participating in was during his college years, I think, and was done by himself and some other students upon an apparently unwilling coed. Not what the Pope had in mind, I don't think. Though I'm open to more info.
Since when do we hold candidates accountable for what they did in college, and I'm thinking of Clinton, Obama, etc....

What do you guys think about Lowry's "Romney by elimination" theory?
If he goes for it in 2012, Romney should unseat Deval Patrick and run as a sitting governor. If he wants to wait for 2016, he should unseat Patrick anyway.
I was very disappointed that he didn't run for reelection in 2006. Had he defeated the eloquent (black) Patrick in a very liberal state in the Democratic year of 2006, he would have been the natural candidate to oppose Obama--and I bet he would have won.
I was hoping Mitt would run for President from the moment he returned to MA to run for governor, but I'm put off by his caution in 2006.

Was just reading that. What they don't add to the equation is that it costs more to buy and manufacture CF lighting. Money equals energy which remove the energy savings gained by the consumer. Additionally, these bulbs must be disposed of properly since it's considered toxic waste. This also removes the energy savings. I would venture to guess that while those bulbs last longer the overall energy savings to society would be negligible.

True, I don't think religion will be at the top of most voters' priority list by the time the next election rolls around. My gut reaction is that most voters don't really hold Romney's religion against him, but that it's sort of a placeholder for other uneasiness that they can't easily narrow down.

Yep, formal and professional sure isn't the draw that it used to be. Of course Bush caught much crap for uncouth behavior, but that in itself never seemed to work against his popularity. If anything, the opposite. Maybe there's a certain attraction to a president who's "rough around the edges"? Or there used to be, at least. Hi SE! You didn't ask me, but I hope the "religious right" has little to do with elections anymore, I really do. And I agree that Romney doesn't seem the sort to be someone I'd like to sit down and have a beer with (well I would, but I get your point). The real problem with the old meme of the Rich Republicans can't possibly understand the plight of the poor, oppressed and elderly (broke, elderly, anyway) is just a myth which the MSM keeps trotting out at election time.
Some other poster - who's name I've forgotten, posted a listing (with a link) of the ten richest Congresscritters and #' 1-5 were Dems, 6,7 and 10 Republicans and #9 a Dem and heading the list - to my surprise was Nancy Pelosi! That's why I laugh when I see Ted Kennedy (with reportedly four seperate trusts, each valued at over $250 million) speaking about those poor folks. As if he has ANY IDEA at all of what life is like for the poor or the working poor. And the way the economy is going, I suspect that there will be, regrettably MORE poor folks in 2012 than there were in 2008. So yeah, I think Romney might be a turn off to them, unless he can speak specifically about real plans to reduce unemployment (the real key to our economic difficulties) and reinvigorate American enterprise and small businesses.

You all know this legislation Congress is passing "without reading"--the EPA stuff and the one before--I can't remember what it was about, but Pelosi had to get on an airplane to visit the Pope --so they "had" to vote on it?
Who is writing this legislation?
I ask because I seem to remember a scandal at some time in which a corporation wrote the legislation it wanted and their Congresschump got it passed.
Does anyone know if there is any research being done on this?

Yemeni plane crashes off Comoros, 150 on board
An airliner with 150 people on board belonging to Yemeni state carrier Yemenia crashed into choppy seas as it came in to land on the Indian Ocean archipelago of Comoros on Tuesday, officials said.
"The plane has crashed and we still don't know exactly where. We think it's in the area of Mitsamiouli. There were 150 passengers on board," Comoros Vice-President Idi Nadhoim told Reuters from the airport at the main island's capital Moroni.
A Paris Airport spokeswoman said a Yemenia flight left Paris on Monday morning before landing in Yemen and then taking off for Moroni.

The Reuters story linked earlier did not mention the type of aircraft. This one from CNN does, an Airbus A-310.
A Yemeni jetliner with more than 150 people aboard has crashed in the Indian Ocean off the island nation of Comoros, aviation officials in Yemen said Tuesday.
An Airbus 310 like the one pictured has crashed while on the way to the capital of Comoros. An Airbus 310 like the one pictured has crashed while on the way to the capital of Comoros.
The jet was en route to Moroni, the capital of Comoros, from Yemen's capital Sanaa when it crashed about an hour before reaching its destination, officials from the national airline Yemenia said. There was no immediate news of the fate of those on board.
Yemenia Flight 626 left Sanaa at 9:30 p.m. for what was expected to be a 4½-hour flight. The airline has three regular flights per week to Moroni, off the east coast of Africa about 2,900 kilometers (1,800 miles) south of Yemen.
Most of the 143 passengers aboard the Airbus A310 were Comoran, an official at Sanaa's international airport said. The aircraft also carried a crew of 11, for a total of 154 people on board.
There has been no indication of foul play behind the crash, the officials said.
The crash is the second involving an Airbus jet in a month. On June 1, an Air France Airbus A330 crashed off Brazil while en route from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Paris, France. All 228 aboard are presumed dead. The cause remains under investigation

Ah. I see what you're saying.
I did find the following info, though. Apparently Boone is anti-evolution as well. And he wrote an article defending Mel Gibson on charges of anti-Semitism, though I haven't seen the article:
...He wrote another article defending actor Mel Gibson, who is a member of an extremely conservative Catholic denomination, after the actor was recorded unleashing a vicious anti-Semitic tirade while he was being arrested for drunk driving by a police officer he believed to be Jewish (the officer, as it turned out, was a Christian). In early 2007 Boone wrote two articles claiming that the scientific theory of evolution is "absurd," "nonsensical" and a "bankrupt false religion".
Goodnight, RW! Hope to see you here again soon.

Help! I've been adopted by a 15# tabby and I can't get up! He's so cute though. When he wants food, he walks over and licks his upper lip. If I don't move, he attacks me. I learn fast. See tongue, get food.

I haven't seen a great deal of overlap between Nirthers and Troofers but where it does exist it seems to be among really hard-core racist crazies; Stormfront, Christian Identity, that kind of thing.
I believe, and I think most Lizardoids would agree, that Nirthers aren't nearly as bad as 9-11 Troofers. The Nirthers are merely stupid and annoying, Trooferism is a disgusting outrage against human dignity.

That is creepy.
two of my cats are black - at night, when we try to get them inside - all we can see are the eyes, bobbing up and down as they trot up to the house.

Cats will always talk to you, and quite clearly too, if you pay attention.

Our cat liked underneath a bush in the yard at night, I'd open the door and call him. I see the too points of light, blink.... blink.....

Trooferism is a nirtherism cubed.

Must try to get some sleep, before I go spray the other cats with the pet-odor-neutralizer, which I'm sure doesn't work on the actual pets.
good night all.

Quite Concur. Troofers dishonor both those who died on 9-11 and and to a lesser degree, everyone else be assuming we're all too stupid to see their Troof..

[...]In 1959 Pat Boone wrote the lyric to the theme from the movie “Exodus,” about the creation of the State of Israel. It provided him a special connection with the country, one that he has maintained. Today Boone is Christian Ambassador to Israel, leading many tours of the country for the Christian Broadcasting Network. He also possesses an Israel Cultural Award, the country’s highest award for a non native. He is spokesman for the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews “Wings of Eagles” program, allowing 300,000 Jews from iron curtain countries to resettle in Israel.[...]
As a Jew I have seen enough Jew hate in my life to recognize it when I see it, and Pat Boone has been slandered, IMHO. G-d bless him.
G'nite, all! Sweet dreams, Lizards.

re: #154 jaunte
I read the Craig Thomas novel. The movie follows the novel quite closely. The biggest difference to me is that in the novel all of the dissidents died without knowing that Gant (played by Eastwood in the movie) got away, where in the movie one of the Jewish engineers in the hanger and the truck driver who got Gant to the base survived long enough to see Gant succeed.
I thought that change was a nice touch.

also the first migs didn't use stainless steal so they rusted in the rain
Welding stainless steal is not that easy (well it was not then). And with planes expected to face fast wear and tear through use under front line ans battle conditions, it was not necessary.

Dear Dear Leader,
This is the United States Air Force sending you a little candy gram. Go ahead and fire your little Tae Dong or My Tiny Sch-long or whatever you call your bottle rockets, er, we mean missiles. Just remember ours are much bigger than yours and we've been doing this ICBM thing for a long time compared to you, rookie.
Have a nice day, shorty.

True! Like Michelle Obama's $300,000 job at a non-profit! Or promoting "green" jobs in Detroit.Funny how that works.
She'll get the job but only if she hasn't paid her taxes for several years.

NOK parade. Those trucks look really old.
Military guys/gals? question.
Wouldn't marching like that (goose step?) hurt your feet?
After the parade, the old loon goes out and collects any loose change.

We're barely 6 months into Obama's first term and I can already see the writing on the wall.
Homeboy is gonna be the biggest joke of a President we've ever had. Let's just hope that the damage he does will be easy to reverse.
It won't be; but we'll be rid of him and his commie buddies.

In a related story: Way long ago we flew the SFT-2 flight for MDO before they got big and became an ‘Agency’. The payload flight test group was out at Meck Island with the bird in the hole and some on the original test & integration, et al, got to watch the flight test on a closed video feed from Vandenburg and Kwaj. Countdown went smooth until T-15 minutes when a rain squall formed off the California coast and they had to delay the launch for local weather. OK so some time passes and they restart the count. The MRLV left the silo at Vandenburg and flew a nice trajectory. Some minutes later the PLV lifted our payload (Sensor Flight Test 2) from the silo and we got our flyby data and in our 24 hour report we had selected the correct target (an RV replica) among the counter measures. (The Boeing-Rockwell sensor did not get this on the flight they flew a year earlier BTW.)
In conversing with the ground test folks who were interpreting my telemetry data they said there was a curios incident just prior to the launch of the interceptor. As it turns out one of the ‘other reasons’ the launch didn’t go as planned was that there was a Green Peace boat off the Cal coast and the Coast Guard had to run them off because they were in the area where the first stage booster would impact. THEN … here’s the kicker. While in the blockhouse on Meck Island the cameras picked up two people walking from the shore carrying a banner headed for the silo. Their timing was amazing, but with the launch delay they were premature in their arrival to protest the event. Range security fetched them and they were turned over to the authorities. The King dealt with them by holding them naked in jail for three days.
Those two idiots owe their lives to a little weather delay. Were it not for that, they would have been killed by a combination of the booster engine heat giving them 3rd degree burns (they would have been incinerated as soon as the nozzle cleared the hole), and the acoustic energy would have turned them into arthropods.
Don’t know where these two fools are but that day they got lucky. And reading the news a decade later, I see that they've multiplied.
