Sanford Admits to More Trysts

Politics • Views: 4,365

The saga of Governor Mark Sanford descends into farce, as he admits he lied about how often he saw his Argentinian mistress.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford admitted Tuesday that he saw his Argentine mistress more times than previously disclosed, including what was to be a farewell meeting in New York chaperoned by a spiritual adviser soon after his wife found out about the affair.

In a lengthy and emotional interview with The Associated Press in his Statehouse office, the governor described five meetings with Maria Belen Chapur over the past year, including two romantic, multi-night stays with her in New York before they met there again intending to break up.

He said he met her two other times — their first meeting in 2001 at an open-air dance spot in Uruguay and a coffee date in New York in 2004 during the Republican National Convention. He said neither time was romantic.

Ironically, Without Wife and Mistress, Mark Sanford Is More Screwed Than Ever

Over the weekend, as Mark Sanford's mistress, Maria Belen Chapur, was opening up about her affair, both the New York Times and Washington Post turned their attention to the home front, examining just how screwed the South Carolina governor is now that he's been kicked out by his wife. Jenny Sanford, it turns out, is not only a cool customer, but she's also apparently a smart, tough cookie who bakes cookies, a dichotomy other First Ladies (like Hillary Clinton, famously) would have argued was not possible. Jenny has kept her wits about her in the week since the affair broke, writing up a statement for herself and handing it out to reporters camped out on her lawn. She's also given an interview to the AP, during which she said she's given up worrying about the political future for her husband — a man whose name has been frequently mentioned for the 2012 presidential election. "His career is not a concern of mine," Jenny Sanford told reporters camped at the end of her driveway as she left with her boys for a boat ride the other day. "He's going to have to worry about that. I'm worried about my family and the character of my children," she said.

Mark Sanford has enough political trouble for engaging in the affair to begin with. Critics are complaining that his behavior should merit a resignation from the governorship, if not for the affair, for the use of taxpayer funds to travel to Argentina, or the fact that he disappeared for five days without revealing his whereabouts even to his staff. If he had any hope for a strategy to recover from this, it would likely have come from the mind that crafted his first congressional run and two gubernatorial bids: that of Jenny Sanford, his wife and brilliant campaign manager. A Georgetown-educated M&A expert who gave up her job at Lazard Freres to raise a family with Sanford, Jenny was always in charge of his political future. And now, without her, most friends say his clock is punched. "He would have never won either of his governor's races without her — no way," said a former Sanford spokesman. "She ran the show. He pointed the direction he wanted to go, and she was the bulldozer that cleared the path and got him there." The "Old Testament woman with a 170 IQ" is turning her attentions elsewhere, departing the state to vacation with her kids and leaving her estranged husband to deal with the mess he created on his own. ...

Go Jenny!

Memo to Gov. Sanford:

We don't care how many times you shacked up with the woman. Our concern is how you disappeared for days without telling anyone and that you mis-appropriated state funds for your little romantic escapade. Dereliction of duty and using the state's money is our problem with you.

So, should this be surprising? Really?

It's the same with Edwards affair and Spitzer's sex trysts with hookers. Once they start, they can't stop.

My only concern is whether any of them broke the law and their affairs affected their capabilities to do their jobs. In Sanford's case, we've got a bit of both - he was out of state and out of communications, and may have used state funds to pay for a portion of his trips. He deserves what ever is coming his way.

His wife and kids will suffer, but somehow I think Sanford's wife will have the last laugh yet.

My job requires me to travel a bit. I wish I had a dollar for every time I was away and had an opportunity to have a little affair with a nice woman that my wife would most likely never know about but I never did.

I take my marriage vows very seriously, and if I had an affair the guilt over it would last long after the pleasure had faded. I can look my wife in the eye and tell her I've always been faithful to her. Because I have. Lord knows I've been tempted, but I've never succumbed. It wasn't easy, but I've got a great woman and I don't want to hurt her and risk losing her.

To be brutally honest, my reaction to the whole story can be summarized in four letters:

YAWN

I mean, a politician cheating on his wife with a woman almost his own age is somehow newsworthy?

As distinct from, say, cruising toilets for anonymous sex with men, using interns as vacuum cleaners, renting top-dollar escorts on the taxpayer's dime, having one's homosexual lover run a rent-boy prostitution ring from one's apartment, molesting children,...

Maybe it's because I grew up in Europe, but I really have a hard time getting worked up over this one... The only times the non-tabloid media even discussed a politician's sex life were when it got either illegal (child molestation) or really bizarre, such as when an MP was found dead after an auto-erotic asphyxiation session went too far...

Yes, Sanford's sordid affairs will trump the bigger issue of Cap n Trade, and MJ's death is still trumping them all. At some point I quit holding the media accountable, it's the common American's fault since the media only gives us what we want.

Back to Sanford, it's a mixed blessing. He's clearly a problematic candidate (proponent of ID/creationism, possibly for public schools). His problem with sexual pecadillos took care of the bigger problem: being a viable GOP candidate that would have a huge disadvantage in any national election. I'm very sure that ID/Creationism in public schools will be a huge issue next election.

The fact that he left his office for 5 days and didn't tell his staff is a serious issue as well, on top of the affair. The fact that he further damaged the image of the already wounded GOP is another sin he has to repent with a pound of flesh. He has to go.

Look, the psychology of these people is very simple. They would prefer to live in comparative austerity as long as they (the "enlightened" class) are clearly better off than the rest, rather than be well off but no better (or slightly worse) off than the undeserving benighted ones.

They simply cannot bear the fact that somebody in a profession they look down upon (say, a plumber) makes more money than they do.

As the summer begins, White House watchers have spotted a new look by President Obama: The Evil Eye!

Staffers have joked about the menacing glance, which comes when the president meets with world leaders who are not aligned with his progressive view.

White House photographers have captured the "evil eye" in recent weeks, during sessions with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Colombia's Alvaro Uribev.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi got hit with the commander's malocchio last week in the Oval office.

And at least one White House reporter has been on the receiving end of the daggers during a press conference.

Some aids must have been wise to this, on some level or at least suspicious. It's hard to feel any sense of alarm over a heterosexual affair. Chagrin, disappointment and embarrassment for republicans yes, but not alarm.

Remember that not only did Bill Clinton have affairs with Jennifer Flowers, and Monica, but the Lewinsky affair was revealed while he was under investigation for the sexual assault on Paula Jones. During the investigation the Juanita Broderick provided credible testimony that Bill Clinton had previously raped her in an Arkansas hotel room. Then Kathleen Wiley came forward to say that Clinton had also sexually assaulted her when she asked him for a paying job.

Clinton is revered to this day by many in the Democrat party. That last fact is the most alarming.

re: #82 Former Belgian

Second Thoughts on North Korea’s Inscrutable Ship

But now some top officials in the Obama administration are beginning to wonder whether Kim Jong-il, the North Korean leader, ordered the Kang Nam 1 out on a fishing expedition — in hopes that a new American president will be his first catch.

“The whole thing just doesn’t add up,” said one senior administration official who has been tracking the cargo ship’s lazy summer journey. “My worry is that we make a big demand about seeing the cargo, and then there’s a tense standoff, and when it’s all over we discover that old man Kim set us up to look like George Bush searching for nonexistent W.M.D.”

Some people continue to believe that the Republican party has any chance before 2016 -- for president or either party of Congress. Nope. The party that preaches "family values" but keeps getting outed by the likes of Sanford, Craig, etc. is going to get hosed. Either kick the social conservatism to the curb or continue to be "amazed" at what it really is: patriarchal, misogynist, anti-gay, anti-non-"traditional" hypocrisy. Go ahead GOPers, sign The Pledge: "I __________, am a traditional values Republican. I believe in traditional values and act accordingly. If I am caught acting contrary to these values, such as cheating on my wife, being secretly gay, or doing anything that I've ever criticized, I hereby pledge that I will commit suicide as the only honorable solution." Signed______________. They won't. They're losers, morally and electorally.

No one cares about the sex lives of politicians anymore . But going AWOL while in a chief executive position is unpardonable.
He should resign.

I don't see how this is news or relevant unless he has broken the law. What exactly the big news about a disrepancy in a politician's (or anyone's) statements about their personal problems? The guy is clearly - clearly trying to come clean and not trying to deceive anyone about the whole thing any longer.

He's taken care of the time where the meeting could have potentially been seen as part of a taxpayer funded trip. If he broke the law in any meaningful way, he should resign.

The only "descent into farce" here is the media's headline and the decision to put this on the front page over everything else that is going on.

If you can lie to your wife, you can lie to just about anyone.

Morality aside, a silver lining:

Bill Clinton got his spouse and staff on board wrt tolerating/covering up his affairs. Sanford did neither.

He lacks the elementary competence that a President should have. Unfortunately, if they are backed by the brains and drive of a Jenny Sanford or Marilyn Quayle, such unqualified people can get nominated and elected.

Mark Sanford won't be one of them.

You mean Hustler? That's Larry Flint's magazine. Penthouse would be Bob Guccione, I think.

I've replaced the dilithium crystals with Folgers™ crystals.

Let's see if Scotty notices.

The Onion should do a parody commercial of that. Excellent!

yup. Also, if you have no morals in your private life, you will be dishonest in your public life. Either you have character, or you don't. You can't switch it off and on when you are horny.

Mitt Romney is a mormon and he is a stand up (not lie down) kind of guy. Yeah I know mormons have stopped the polygamy thing, but Mitt seems like a guy who does not cheat on his wife.

Too. . .much. . .information.

He was unfaithful. . .got it.

As to how many times, in what places, and in what positions. . .those sordid details are up to him and his wife.

Sanford's crime here wasn't cheating on his wife. . .again, that's between him and here. . .it was abandoning his post as governor for a week.

re: #159 lawhawk

One further thought about Sanford. This story is sucking the air out of the room and the media types are fixated on it more than they are about Iran's speeding towards totalitarianism, the Honduras "coup", the cap and trade fiasco, the pension timebomb, and a whole host of other more important stories.

Scandal sells rags and air time, particularly sexual scandal.

This one is hot and sexy, where as cap and trade, pensions, etc are ever-present and boring.

Lets face it, real news is boring. That's why nobody wants it, and why the major media largely doesn't provide it.

205 NukeAtomrod  Tue, Jun 30, 2009 12:54:10pm

I don't care about this any more than I cared about Bill Clinton's affairs. He can step down or be voted out of office as appropriate. We don't need in depth investigation or congressional hearings, etc. Any further action here is just a waste of time and money.

206 Vinnieg  Tue, Jun 30, 2009 1:06:09pm

He should have cheated on his taxes instead, then he would have a cabinet position.

207 gatorbait  Tue, Jun 30, 2009 1:39:17pm

Tell me why I should care
That Mark Sanford had an affair
If it mattered a bit in my life
I would eat my peas with a knife

208 elclynn  Tue, Jun 30, 2009 2:07:46pm

Sanford should just shut up. The blow by blow of his sexploits is nauseating. Of course he could be pimping for a reality show.

I have to say, I really, really approve of her. I like it that she is protecting herself, and the kids, and not standing by him wearing a carefully selected suit. Smart woman.
