But, do we REALLY need all those lights on at night?
I mean do we need street lights if our cars have headlights?
If we're going to really reduce energy consumption.

Microwave the burrito till it's unfrozen but not really hot yet. Melt a bunch of Crisco (or even lard) in a shallow pan till it's 3/8" deep (one fat finger), fry that bugger on medium till it's brown, set in plate to cool down with cheese on it, put fresh salsa over the cheese, then, this is most important... nom nom nom.

It might need to be medium high if it's not a hot stove. If it's too cold too much oil/lard will soak into the burrito. It should be a vigorous bubble/fry but not splattering.

"Money for MillerCoors
Let's check the recent headlines:
Chicago Schools Cutting 550 Workers
City Council Approves Furlough Days
Union Workers Protest Layoffs at City Hall
And you can choose any of the recent headlines regarding Daley's nephew making money hand over fist and the Olympic Parade of dollars.
Then there's this story slipping under the radar:
MillerCoors LLC officially opened its headquarters in Chicago Friday in a project estimated by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley's office to cost $21.8 million.
The new headquarters, at 250 S. Wacker Drive, for the joint venture that combines Milwaukee's Miller Brewing Co. and Colorado's Coors Brewing Co. will bring 325 jobs to Chicago, according to a Daley press release.
The city of Chicago agreed to provide $6 million in tax incremental financing funds for redevelopment of the property. In addition, the state of Illinois pledged an economic package of roughly $18 million to lure MillerCoors to Chicago over Dallas.
$6 million for MillerCoors. And our contract is two years and a day late so far. But hey, let's just lay off police and fire fighters to cover for our own ineptitude."

You are a good lead.
I'm still afraid to listen to that book. Still not totally over Jonah Goldberg's and still reeling over the Robert Caro trilogy about LBJ. I have it purchased and in my library.
I'm catching up on some history. Just finished the Thomas Paine biography by Christopher Hitchens --which gives a more European viewpoint on Paine.
I'm currently listening to the biography about Cornelius Vanderbilt by T.J. Stiles. Amazing man. Ruthless with a capital "r", but born to make money. No real education, functionally illiterate, but instinctively understood the possibilities of the corporate structure and acted.

Here is an intersting book site (linked from Dr. Sanity). I'm afraid to read it.
Hubby and I found a used book store while on vacation. The owner had died and the store was in transition. No great deals, but Lordy, I could have lived there. The man had been in the business for years and had a real knack for it. I just HAD to purchase some.
I could read for years just from my own stacks.

I don't think you need to be afraid to "Listen" to the book if you bought the audio version. Much like any audio book, you may find your self listening to it in parts and in the whole several times through.
Reading the book is more difficult because it is so rich in ideas and implications that it is very easy to stop reading and just sit and think about what you just read. The Audio version pushes you along, not giving the time or leeway to let you thoughts wonder off and chew and fret an idea over. In the same way, the trouble with the audio version is that you may wander off in thought about something you have just heard, and lose your place, having to backtrack the audio to a earlier point. (I did a lot of this.)

Syrah, it's not listening vs. reading that scares me. It's the content. I don't know how much more I can handle of "reality" right now. I do understand about ruminating over read passages in a book. I have a couple regarding reconstruction I can only read a chapter at a time. I tend to get upset that we have so much to learn and that society seems ignore the opportunity to learn from lessons of the past.
I've been trying to take a break (hide) in fiction and more straight-forward non-fiction (history). I find fiction especially healthy for the brain.

2 great ideas for new constitutional amendments:
No law, bill, resolution or any act of Congress shall exceed 2000 words, including all footnotes, amendments and signatures. Congress shall not vote on any item longer than that. Each item requiring a vote shall be read aloud in its entirety in session to a majority of members. Those not in attendance may not vote on the item.
Congress shall pass no bill, and no bill shall become law, which embraces more than one subject, that subject being clearly expressed in the title.
Bonus from the first link: A ready-made speech for those campaigning against Democrats in the 2010 election:
My opponent voted for a Bill he/she never read. Only an idiot would do that. Would you walk into a voting booth with a blindfold on and just push some buttons? Or would you read and consider what you’re voting on before you vote? I promise I will not vote for anything I haven’t read in its entirety.

It's funny, but the off-strip casinos are beating the strip casinos in terms of percentage of hotel guests that play in the casino.
While 87% of people spend more than 4 hours a day gambling while they visit Vegas, most strip casinos can't even get near 10% of their hotel guests gambling in their casinos. Most of them average around 2-3%!
A 20-year study has found that all those open areas and distractions actually deter people from playing there. People who want to gamble actually feel more comfortable when they can focus on the machines and lose themselves in the gambling.
Ever notice the casinos never advertise in terms of casino odds anymore? "We pay off more than casino X . . ." No, they put all their money into advertising their shows, restaurants and stores because that's what's paying the strip hotel's bill, not their casinos.

Somewhere, among all those M&M's will be 1 (and only one) silver M&M. For $1, I'll blindfold you, you can go into anyone of the 3 fields, and pick out an M&M at random. If you pick out the one silver M&M, I'll give you $20 million dollars."
The person to whom he was talking said, "That's silly - ludicrous, even! Who would pay to make such a stupid bet?"
His reply? "Everyone who buys a lottery ticket. The odds and conditions are almost identical."

It's right next to Coca-Cola World, funnily enough.
We'll have to get you to M&M's World somehow. They not only have unique colors, but you can personalize them with your own words and even pictures now (how's that for a wedding reception desert – M&M's with pictures of the happy couple!).

I was there ten years ago ....a skiing trip to Tahoe with an overnite in Vegas. I was in a relatively new relationship at the time. The guy became unrecognizable once he hit the casinos ...just went nuts. He won 12 grand in a hot streak on the poker tables and bought a thousand dollar bottle of something or the other to celebrate.
Once we got back here he insisted we make a trip out to one of the local Indian reservation casinos. He lost 6 grand in half an hour and would NOT leave. I left him there and came home alone. That was about the end of that.

Question for electronic gadget Lizards:
I have an old console radio, an old tube radio console, and I want to gut it and put in some kind of a CD player/mp3 player that you could load the CDs from the front, like a normal CD player. In other words, I'd like it to still look like an old radio.
Does anyone make stand alone components like this? I'm not one of those ham radio/tube collector/soldering buffs. My electronics expertise consists of plugging a cord into an outlet, and loading a CD into a tray. Carpentry-wise, I'm pretty handy.
I've seen the Crosley "nostalgia" models, but I read they pretty much suck. And I'd like to use the console I have.

I've been like that since my teenage years. My mother took me to the doctor for "tests" over and over, since according to her, "Napping is not normal". Finally the doctor told her, "ENOUGH! That's her metabolism. That's the way she is."

Littleoldlady, I have a silly question re Judaism. For some reason this popped in my head as I was falling asleep last night.
Does Jewish identity derive from one's mother? (If your mother is Jewish, father is not, you're Jewish; but reverse isn't true?)
If so- King David wasn't Jewish. His (great?) grandmother Ruth wasn't Jewish.
Like I said, silly question.

In the past three years I have bought three Creative Labs MP3 players for my wife and myself.
This demonstrates either my loyalty, or that I'm a touch 'slow' (as my relatives say, "bless his heart"). Two out of three have gone belly up, and the customer service folks inform me that it would be cheaper to buy a new unit rather than repair them.
With that record, why in hell would I buy another product from Creative Labs?

re: #378 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

Vocal gymnastics were all the rage in the early 1800s, and Rossini supplied the scores. Amazing works of flexibility!
Earlier in the late baroque, the Castrati dazzled audiences with the extreme speed, power, range and brilliance of their voices. The Da Capo aria was the perfect medium for them (ABA form) since the first part was repeated and (often excessively) embellished.
Twentieth century works (not all) have tended to be angular with difficult intervals - even in choral music.

Good morning.
Look for the market to open on the upside as the market continues to trade sideways waiting on clear signs from the economy as to where things are going.
Even the NYT is concerned:
In 2nd Quarter, Stocks Gained, but for How Long?
The good news is that Wall Street finished its best quarter in years on Tuesday — part of a dizzy spree that lifted the broad market 35 percent since early March. The not-so-good news? It would take almost three more rallies like that to push the Dow Jones industrial average back to 14,000 and return markets to where they were before the financial crisis. On Wall Street — where exuberance, irrational and otherwise, is usually an art form — there is a nagging fear that the market is again losing its footing.
Despite signs that this downturn is easing, many Americans are more downbeat about the economy now than they were when the stock rally began. Unemployment is rising. Home prices are falling. Many corporate earnings are still weak.
Now, the NYT still has a long way to go before they see any connection between the economic malaise and Obama's socialist anti-growth polices, and thinking about the prospect of considering the concept of maybe reporting the truth and asking the Obama Administration a tough question.
But it's a start.

Illinois minimum wage jumping to $8 an hour today:
Minimum wage increases to $8 today
BLOOMINGTON -- While the increase in Illinois' minimum wage to $8 per hour today may be welcome relief for those who need to pay rent and buy groceries, small business owners aren't thrilled.
"No business likes the government telling you what to pay," said Moe Davis, owner of Tobin's Pizza, 1513 N. Main St., Bloomington.
More business owners than not said they oppose the 25-cent increase, saying it could cause an increase in prices and lead to fewer jobs.
The increase was signed into law in 2006 by former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich. It is significantly higher than the federal minimum wage, which is currently $6.55 per hour and scheduled to increase to $7.25 July 24.
Anjali Julka, spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Labor, said more than 390,000 Illinois workers will earn another $520 per year, if full-time.
However, Rich Zeller, co-owner of Avanti's, said the increase could eventually lead to higher prices at his two Bloomington-Normal restaurants.
Zeller said cost of wages will increase about 1 percent because about 80 of his 320 employees are affected.
While Davis doesn't anticipate raising prices, he'll make due with fewer workers.
Just what we needed, more costs for the small businesses to deal with and some of them cutting jobs.
What many people don't realize when unfinded mandates like this hit business, is that no one sends them the money to pay for the added costs. YYou either pay higher prices for the goods/services or you eat the social cost of higher unemployment.

And the Obama supporters will cheer every step of the way.

We mention these not so small details because they are being overlooked as the world, including the U.S. President, denounces tiny Honduras in a way that it never has, say, Iran. President Obama is joining the U.N., Fidel Castro, Hugo Chávez and other model democrats in demanding that Mr. Zelaya be allowed to return from exile and restored to power. Maybe it's time to sort the real from the phony Latin American democrats.

Better said, maybe it's time to sort the real from the phony American democrats, period.

I am an experienced economist. I am trained to look at economic facts and data and draw accurate conclusions about the coming economic scene. For over 20 years I professionally invested 100's of millions sucdessfully based on said conclusions. I have been on faculty at several Universities teaching on the subject at undergrad, graduate, and even on line classes. My economic lectures have been recorded and used for research purposes.
I don't believe any of those 3 are so trained or qualified. Kilgore admits (his words, not mine) that he knows nothing about economcs, and he proves that here on a regular basis. I do have hopes that one day he might wake up.
The other two are beyond help in my opinion.

Minimum wage increases to $8 today
Just what we needed, more costs for the small businesses to deal with and some of them cutting jobs. What many people don't realize when unfinded mandates like this hit business, is that no one sends them the money to pay for the added costs. YYou either pay higher prices for the goods/services or you eat the social cost of higher unemployment.
I wrote an article/essay on that very thing last year for my journalism class.

I'm not worried about Boston, they have a glut of starting pitching and Epstein will pull the trigger on a trade if he feels it necessary. Big Papi has come around and the Sox are hitting. Am a little concerned about Mike Lowell, but Kotsay can play 1st and Youk 3rd. Nice pickup by the Yanks getting Hinske, he was on the Sox 2007 WS Champs team.

Because it's going to take a grass-roots, bottom-up pressure. Because these politicians prize their office, prize the praise of the media and the Europeans. It's an absurd situation again. Only Osama can execute an attack which will force Americans to demand that their government protect them effectively, consistently, and with as much violence as necessary.
