Beck and Scheuer: Only an Attack By Osama Bin Laden Can Save America

Video • Views: 12,707

In this clip from the Glenn Beck Comedy Hour, former CIA agent (and complete wacko) Michael Scheuer says the only thing that can save America from illegal immigration is for “Osama bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States.”

Good grief.

Beck, of course, nods and agrees with this warped analysis, and says, “Which is why I was thinking this weekend, if I were him that would be the last thing I would do right now.”

Sure, an attack would "wake people up", but there are plenty of people that are wided-eyed to the situation and not being quiet about it. Don't wish the deaths of many on this country to push your goal.

What an asshat.

7 Charles Johnson  Wed, Jul 1, 2009 9:56:10am

I just noticed in the previous thread, some people were arguing that Beck didn't agree with Scheuer -- but he absolutely DID. He nodded along with Scheuer, then said, "Which is why I was thinking..."

That's agreement, by any definition. Beck didn't say one word to counter Scheuer, he implicitly agreed with his statement by saying "which is why..."

The only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States.

It certainly sounds like he thinks this must happen, not even mentioning he hopes it doesn't happen.

I'm sorry, but to think the only way to save the country is by having countless Americans die to make a point is....insanity.

20 Yashmak  Wed, Jul 1, 2009 10:01:02am

The only way to save this country has nothing to do with immigration or terrorism. The only way to save this country is a widespread revival of the idea of personal responsibility, and to get rid of the notion that the government's function is to take care of, and provide for the individual.

21 DaddyG  Wed, Jul 1, 2009 10:01:27am

Michael Scheuer Watch #1: The Jewish Conspiracy
06.07.2007 - 12:49 PM

Are Jews running U.S. foreign policy from behind the scenes? This is a question lately on many lips, from those of Jimmy Carter to professors John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, respectively of the University of Chicago and Harvard, on down to David Duke, Ph.D., of the Ku Klux Klan.

One of the pioneers in resurrecting this idea, first put into wide circulation in this country in the early part of the 20th century by the industrialist Henry Ford in his tract The International Jew, is Michael Scheuer. Formerly of the CIA, where he ran the unit responsible for tracking down Osama bin Laden, Scheuer has not only kept himself occupied writing books—see my discussion of one of them in What Became of the CIA—he has also been busy on the lecture circuit....

Everyone is overreacting to this stupid video. The part he was nodding at was when he said 'Only Osama could pull off an attack that would make us demand the government do something to protect us.' I dont find agreeing with this statement very strange since that was exactly what it took for the government to do something. They didnt do jack before 9/11.

re: #14 buzzsawmonkey

I do not see or hear anything in this clip which deals with immigration, legal or illegal.

This came at the end of a discussion on illegal immigration, and how the government is not protecting the country.

I also do not see Beck as "agreeing with" Scheuer's analysis; he is agreeing that an attack would encourage support for a strong and violent response--but if he is agreeing with Scheuer's propositions as set forth in the clip, that agreement does not appear in the clip itself.

Yes, it does. He implicitly agrees when he says "which is why." This phrase indicates that he accepts Scheuer's analysis, and is making the point that Bin Laden would NOT do this because he doesn't want to save America.

29 subsailor68  Wed, Jul 1, 2009 10:03:21am

I've listened to the clip several times, and I must say, I don't really understand Beck's final comment. He seems to be referring to bin Laden when he says "which is why I was thinking this weekend that if I were him, that's the last thing I would do right now."

In any case, Beck should clarify his position regarding Sheuer's crazy rant. I think I agree with Charles that the head nod and "which is why" opening seems to be a continuation of Sheuer's remarks, not a refutation of them.

30 MJ  Wed, Jul 1, 2009 10:03:36am

That Michael Scheuer Sure is One Crazy Jew-Hater

...According to a very interesting story by National Journal writer Sydney J. Freedberg, Jr., Michael Scheuer, the man the CIA counted on to catch Osama Bin-Laden, had this to say about Israel:

Israel is not only an unnecessary and self-made liability for the United States, it is an untreated and spreading cancer on our domestic politics, foreign policy, and national security.

In my experience, the only people who refer to Jews, or to the Jewish state, as a "cancer" are the leaders of Hamas, Hezbollah and al-Qaeda. Comparing Jews to diseases or pathogens went out of style in about 1945, in fact. Nice going there, Mike.

This certainly is a nice little nugget for the left to grab on to and bandy about to show what a whack Beck is. But, let's set aside this insane fear/option the CIA guy offers and ask a simple question about illegal immigration:

Is anyone in Washington going to stop it?

"Immigration reform" is on the fast track along with carbon taxes and the socialization of our medical industry. All versions being talked about include amnesty for the criminal and their immediate family. This will bring into our country well over 30 million new "citizens". At a time when we are loosing around 500,000 jobs per month, state and federal revenues are falling through the floor and taxes are exploding.

Just what will it take for our elected officials to actually enforce the sovereignty of our nation? Are we even a sovereign nation anymore?

Bash Beck and the CIA guy all you wish, the bottom line is that our nation is at risk of being overcome by a flood of criminals who do not give a damn about our country. What would it take for Washington to stand and say "Enough!"

Overreacting? I have yet to see overreacting. No one here is flailing their arms around and saying "the sky is falling". I do see a number of people concerned that there are those who believe that the only way to get the populace rallied and the government active is to have an attack on our soil.

Some people seem to forget that during the Bush administration we /didn't/ have one after 9/11.

No doubt to you apparently. I'm giving Beck the benefit of the doubt just as others have. But, I'm one who tries his hardest to be fair and not paint with an overly wide brush.

You can go ahead and give Beck the benefit of the doubt if you want to, but I would argue that he's long ago forfeited the right to that benefit. This clip doesn't just pop up in a vacuum, where Glenn Beck has never said anything extreme before -- he has a long history of supporting extreme fringe opinions.

Catastrophic events bring changes. What the clip says is that the only chance we have of changing the folks in Washington NOW is for such a catastrophic event. (Specifically a major weapon by Bin Ladin.) The clip above is not nothing but an overstatement of a fact of life in America. All the negative condemnation of the two kooks, is peripheral to what was stated. We have seen that the events of 9/11 brought wholesale changes in America. Many of them counter to the traditional liberties we have enjoyed for years. Folks, I think you are over the top on this one.

Glenn Beck, who takes aim at the administration repeatedly, is proving an even bigger draw since coming over from HLN: His 5 p.m. slot is up 110 percent from last year. Such a trend shows commentators like Beck can thrive in the opposition.

/ time for Mandy's standard rant

Actually NO, I'm not happy about that. I'm NOT happy is wasn't built, I'm NOT happy it wasn't weaponized. I'm NOT happy the Mexican government assists criminals to enter our country illegally, I'm NOT happy my tax dollars goes to give these criminals a free education, free health care, housing assistance, food assistance - and what ever other assistance these criminals are receiving. I'm NOT happy states give these criminals drivers licenses. I'm NOT happy states give these criminals in-state tuition.

And I AM NOT HAPPY ANY - AND I MEAN ANY - PARTY refuses to address the invasion of our country by criminals and their families.

And that is my standard rant on illegal immigrants.

I still hold Scheurer primarily responsible for not getting Bin Laden even though he tries to deflect the blame in his lame book.

Haven't read it. But I'll shinny out on a pretty sturdy limb and suggest that it is almost entirely fiction. Bin Laden is recent enough news that anyone working for the CIA during his rise and the search for him in Afghanistan would still be tightly bound by security restrictions keeping him from divulging such information under penalty of imprisonment for a very long time. I'm guessing that the reason he hasn't been brought up on charges is simply that there is nothing even remotely factual in his book.

Has anyone verified that he actually worked for the CIA, and if true that he worked there as something other than a janitor or valet?

It is the Glen Beck's of the world who are destroying any chance at all that the democrats will be unseated in 2010. For example, every year employers demand more and more H1B visas for IT professionals, and every year Republicans support their demands. Every holder of an H1B visa puts an American IT professional out of work. Employers claim they can't find Americans with the right skills, but the truth is they can't find an American who will do the work for the pittance a visa holder will accept.

The Democrats, OTOH, seem to prefer to import a peasant class to mow their lawns, clean their houses, and vote Democrat. 30 million new Dems, indoctrinated as members of their very own grievance group, is not what most people want for this country.

I suspect the number of votes drawn away from the Republicans vs. the number of votes attracted to the Republicans by talk show pundits is about an even wash (and a very small number at that). The lack of reporting on critical issues and lack of balance in reporting on main stream candidates is a much more dangerous trend IMO.

These things are not mutually exclusive. The media is not balanced and often dishonest. However, the current perception about the republicans is hurting. I have a lot of middle of the road friends who actually voted FOR Obama because they think the repubs are a bunch of craven right wing nut jobs.

Moreover, who exactly are the republicans attracting with this kind of talk? More crazies?

This senseless and stupid chatter drives people from the center to the left because the right seems just too damn craven. And that means 4 more years of Barack's agenda for America. Are Beck and his ilk actually secretly on Soro's payroll? I mean really, how stupid can they be?

Yes, he was in charge of the Bin Laden unit. His book is "Loosing Bin Laden" basically a BDS diatribe to disguise the fact that he, Scheuer, Really failed in his prime mission.

In his 22-year career, he served as the Chief of the Bin Laden Issue Station (aka "Alec Station"), from 1996 to 1999, the Osama bin Laden tracking unit at the Counterterrorist Center. That's kinda stupid, Osama shouldn't take advantage of our porous borders to attack us because then we would close the border and he wouldn't have an easy in to attack us? That's like saying he shouldn't have used our planes to attack us because now it's harder to attack us with our planes. You take advantage of your enemies weaknesses while you can. This is entryism on the part of the fringe. They latch onto an issue they share with the mainstream, such as immigration reform, and work their fringe ideas into the conversation. Many Americans are concerned with illegal immigration issues, but the fringe doesn't want to stop there. There are plenty of willing, motivated workers presently sitting on their asses because companies prefer to hire cheap imported labor. A more restrictive policy on work visas would force companies to hire American workers who are equal or superior to foreign workers. If I were Empress of the World, one of the first things I would have done at the start of the recession would have been to cut off 100% of work visas for 1 year. I will tell you honestly - I do not mind paying a bit extra for my insurance if it will ensure that uninsured folks can get some sort of care, and we can avoid Obamacare.

In Louisiana, there is a Charity Hospital system, that was started in 1736 (yes, you read that right) thanks to Jean Louis, a French seaman who built boats in New Orleans, and who bequeathed his holdings to the founding and maintenance of Charity Hospital, a hospital for the indigent sick of the colony of New Orleans.

The charity system in Louisiana now includes seven hospitals in several locations in the state. HCSD sees most of its uninsured patients in its
clinics, not in its hospitals, and has a very large outpatient base–1,600,000 visits and encounters– and a small inpatient base–35,000 admissions

It is not perfect; but people do not go without medical care, and it manages to ensure care is available without Obamacare.

I didn't say you were a lefty. I said: "Your mind is made up and you will look no further. That's what lefties do. That's why logic fails them." Could it be you don't see the change I see in Beck because you stopped looking?

The only change I can see in him is he went from being reasonable to being paranoid and all it took was 1 election to do it. I don't see any change for the better since then, and the fact that he has people on his show wishing for America to be attacked solely for them to have the ability to say "I told you so" to the left, and he does not denounce this, is a clear indicator of this.

And at the same time that companies are bringing in cheap labor via the H-1Bs to replace loyal Americans, they're also shifting jobs overseas (with India now losing out to the Philippines), replacing even more loyal Americans. American companies' loyalties are toward money, not Americans.

Well, those ungrateful bastards unionized, and demanded a forty-hour work week and an end to child labor. After that, the honeymoon was over.

...only thing that can save America from illegal immigration is for “Osama bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States.”

Wha...? I guess an attention whore will say just about anything to get camera time.

No it couldn't.

I will say I listen to Beck on the radio on XM every morning. He is overly emotional and sometimes make really crazy statements. But don't paint him as another typical conspiracy monger. He hangs up on callers who start preaching Alex Jones and 9/11 trutherism. He refuses to talk with callers who come on and talk about the 'One World Government' nonsense... He was all over George Bush's poor policy decisions and is equally as harsh on Obama.

He says he simply loves this country and doesn't want to see it destroyed by bad decisions and stupid politicians from either party.

He may be unhinged at times but aren't we all. We're just not on TV.

Only as long as no one is watching Fox News. If 0bama and the Dems continue to overreach, they might still have a chance.

re: #225 buzzsawmonkey

In the meantime, as Rumsfeld once said, you go to war with the army you have. Why are we more committed to making Beck a laughingstock than to chivvying him back to sanity?

I don't see any incentive at all for Beck to come "back to sanity" (if he ever lived there in the first place), with his ratings so good. Populist extremism is a winning formula for Fox News right now.

As for "going to war" with Beck, I know you used the words figuratively, but the problem is that Beck has been stoking the crazies who take that kind of talk literally.

I don't see Beck as being on my side at all -- I see him as a reactionary, destructive influence on conservative politics. And having people like him with such big megaphones does nothing but help discredit conservatives in general. He's not an asset, he's a disaster.

re: #235 Charles

Beck this morning on his show had someone call in and say that protesting like Martin Luther King and Ghandi did not work and the colonists fought the British to overthrow their rule and that will be needed here...

How did Beck respond? By saying the violent resistance is not a way to get your point across... He used the example of Tim McVeigh being executed for the OKC bombing.

237 SFGoth  Wed, Jul 1, 2009 11:41:41am

Short of globalthermonuclearwar, violent revolution as a legitimate political tool is not viable here.

That has been my suspicion for a long time -- especially since the moment they gave a show to Mike Huckabee. I think leftists behind the scenes at Fox are purposely giving airtime to "right"-wing lunatics who will discredit the Republican Party with their extremism.

Wow. The "no true Scotsman" phenomenon really is beginning to take hold with Conservatives. Leftists controlling Fox News? Really?

re: #114 Killgore Trout

Cable news ratings....
Fox News goes 10 for 10
Glenn Beck, who takes aim at the administration repeatedly, is proving an even bigger draw since coming over from HLN: His 5 p.m. slot is up 110 percent from last year. Such a trend shows commentators like Beck can thrive in the opposition.

From TVNewser:

8pm - O'Reilly Factor — 3,188,000
9pm - Hannity — 2,341,000
5pm - Glenn Beck — 2,053,000

Reality Check. That's less than 1 Percent of the US population for Beck. (though O'Reilly does just break 1 Percent)

But as O'Reilly loves to point out, his total ratings are greater than CNN + PMSNBC combined.

The first time i saw Beck I thought he was goofy. two years later after having heard/seen him 10-15 times on radio and TV confirms my first thoughts about the guy. he engages in hyperbole so much so that it renders his points useless. i don't know how people listen to him. takes all kinds i guess.

Maybe I missed something here, but I'm not seeing or hearing what you guys are. Isn't Scheuer saying that the current administration is so closed minded that only another attack could wake them up (i.e. because it will also wake the American people up)?

What's crazy about that?

"The only chance we have as a country right now", is for Osama to attack.

The only chance?
The guy seems to be inviting binLaden to launch an attack.
seems pretty darned weird to me. did you watch the clip?

Yes, I see what you are saying. Perhaps he could have phrased it differently, but is he crazy when you consider that this is the administration that renamed the "War on Terror" the "Overseas Contingency Operation?" I watched the clip. I'll watch the whole thing when it reruns.

Yeah, right.

Key phrase: "...SHOWN to him..."

248 SevoGuy  Wed, Jul 1, 2009 2:32:17pm

The sad thing about this story is that the "wacko" and Beck are probably right. Thinking about several essay's and articles from after 9/11, several pundits and commentators did say that America will not get serious about the War on Islamic Terror until about 500,000 to 1,000,000
Americans die. We Americans have such short memories.......so true.

It's only a matter of time before they hit us on the Obama watch. Only a matter of time. I had an argument with a coworker about the 1993 Islamic terrorist bombing of the World Trade Centers. My coworker told me that it never happened, because she would have heard about it if it did. She fell silent after an Internet search produced the proof. She still insists that Islam is a religion of peace. This is the same coworker who told me that the Islamic prophet Muhammad didn't have a 6 year old wife or consummate his marriage when the she-child reached 9 years-old. She told me I shouldn't believe everything I read on the Internet.

God Bless America and defend the Constitution against Sharia Law.

re: #20 Yashmak

The only way to save this country has nothing to do with immigration or terrorism. The only way to save this country is a widespread revival of the idea of personal responsibility, and to get rid of the notion that the government's function is to take care of, and provide for the individual.

uhhh call me crazy but increased security = increased government which is a necessary evil in that case

Spot on.

Further, and I know it's been said before, the whole idea of sides is ludicrous. If the Republican Party asked me to "side" with the Becks or Limbaughs as the spokesmen of the right, I'm gone.

Oh wait...they already have.

Thanks Charles for the sanest conservative blog out there.
