Arab Fists Still Clenched

Middle East | Thu, Jul 2, 2009 at 10:17:12 am PDT

Imagine my surprise; Barack Obama’s bold new initiative for Arab countries to normalize relations with Israel is getting nowhere.

The U.S. administration has not been successful in securing commitments from Arab countries to take steps toward normalizing relations with Israel, a senior source in Jerusalem said Wednesday.

The source said U.S. President Barack Obama’s recent meeting with King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia did not produce a commitment to encourage the other Arab states to begin normalization.

“In such a situation, the Americans can’t continue demanding gestures only from Israel, such as the demand that Israel freeze settlement construction,” the source said.

So naturally, since the Arab countries remain committed (as they always have been) to the destruction of Israel, Obama will continue asking them to unclench.

In response, a senior White House source said talks with the Arab states are continuing with the aim of obtaining a commitment to make gestures toward Israel, and there is still hope for progress.

What a surprise, Obama not being able to get them to unclench. I thought he was the messiah who was supposed to make the sea levels lower, the Earth peaceful, and stop the Arab-Israeli Conflicts.

Turns out Obama is simply human after all.

I can think of a few gestures the Arabs like to make toward Israel.

One of them involves extending the middle finger while keeping the other three clenched.

Another involves drawing an index finger across one's throat.

It's that "lack of historical perspective" part that mystifies me.

It's not like the history of the region and our relationship with them is unknown to the folks in the White House. I mean, c'mon people, look at the failed peace attempts of

Truman
Eisenhower
Johnson
Nixon
Carter
Reagan
Clinton
Bush

Perhaps scanning the list of futile exercises by American presidents would give Obama a clue? A clue that the Arab world doesn't want peace with the Jews?

37 calcajun  Thu, Jul 2, 2009 10:25:36am

Let's not pretend anymore that history does not matter. It does. What history tells us is that when there are two intractable foes who are locked in a struggle where neither can gain the upper hand and both will be utterly destroyed if a military option is employed, the resolution comes only when one side is exhausted and collapses. The USSR collapsed due to its having been bankrupted by the West. Britain collapsed in its struggles to maintain India due to it's own bankruptcy. The same will happen here--but not anytime soon.

As long as there are people who keep funneling money to that region, there will be this unholy equilibrium. The side which runs out of money first will lose. That's my simple reading of history.

The alternative is, of course, all-out war. Tough to say where that would end and how far it would escalate.

re: #30 zombie
We've seen other foreign affair situations where this Administration seems to have a lack of historical perspective.
I offer up for example, Iran. While I believed President Obama's first statement (through the State Department) was ok, after it was obvious that not only had Dinnerjacket "stolen the election" but that his regime was beating, shooting and MURDERING his fellow citizens, Obama got tougher in his rhetoric (though for reasons unknown to me the words "Freedom" and "Democracy" were not used by Obama) he was still clearly looking - perhaps impatiently - for the "revolution" to either succeed in a hurry or get put down in a hurry so that he could negotiate with the Iranian government over nukes and other things. And yet some 30 years after the Mullah's took over, Iran has become more and more intransigent, despite efforts by both Republican and Democratic Presidents to try to "engage" them.
It's almost as if history pre- January 20, 2009, is irrelevant to him*. And if that's true, it doesn't speak well for America's future foreign relations with anyone in the Arab or Persian worlds and ought to make Israel very, very nervous indeed.
*Of course it's not irrelevant if he can blame it on Bush.

The Arab (Muslim) world is pulling the shirt up over Israel's head and punching them in the kidneys. NoKor is trying desperately to rattle SoKor into a preventative measure and Hugo is trying to put a compatriot back in power in Honduras. Please call your healthcare professionals together and give a statement on whether you will/will not be attending the M.Jackson memorial?

It's that "lack of historical perspective" part that mystifies me.

It's not like the history of the region and our relationship with them is unknown to the folks in the White House. I mean, c'mon people, look at the failed peace attempts of

Truman
Eisenhower
Johnson
Nixon
Carter
Reagan
Bush
Clinton
Bush

Perhaps scanning the list of futile exercises by American presidents would give Obama a clue? A clue that the Arab world doesn't want peace with the Jews?

But none of them were Community Organizers.

As long as there are people who keep funneling money to that region, there will be this unholy equilibrium. The side which runs out of money first will lose. That's my simple reading of history.

That's a very scary, though I think completely realistic, analysis. Thinking it through to its logical conclusion, it suggests the collapse of Israel's foes in the middle east won't occur until oil reserves run out, or a less expensive alternative fuel is developed, whichever comes first.

What's the soonest either of those might happen? In 20, 30 years?

OT, but still pertinent:

Jobless consumers will hold back recovery

This administration is spending us into oblivion at the same time it's creating an economic environment that is a total debacle. Let's see, I get it: increase spending on stimuli, environmental voodoo, health care, ad infinitum, ad nauseum, amen. At the same time, forget the fact that taking money out of the economy for these programs is taking money from private investments that actually create jobs and provide goods, products, and services.

Oh yeah, and while you're at it, don't bother to recognize that the joblessness issue also means lower revenues to the treasury, thus accelerating the downward spiral.

But, hell, you can always save money by cutting the F-22 programs, backing off on missile defense, and just generally gutting Defense.

Oops. Forgot about Iran, North Korea, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Venezuela, etc.

Could this be a case of hard vs. easy?

It's hard to get the Arab countries to change. Concepts like education reform, religious reform, economic reform etc. are intangible, not sexy, and long-term processes which demand patience, vision, and steadfastness.

On the other hand, withdrawal from land and (bad faith) signed agreements on the lawn in front of the world media are much more tangible signs of "success". The only missing ingredient is to press the more flexible side to the wall.

...Therefore, when Barack Obama and Rahm Emanuel entered the White House, many people advised them to tame the rebel. And the president and his chief of staff received the advice enthusiastically. To the two tough guys from Chicago, the idea of loving Israel in a strong, painful manner sounded cool.

The results can be seen almost every day on television screens throughout the world: an American policy taken straight out of a British public school. A diplomacy comprised of public reprimands. The new United States is trying to wean Israel from its bad habits by means of the teacher's ruler. Even as it bows and scrapes to Saudi Arabia and is scrupulously careful of Iran's honor, it humiliates Israel. The president's feet on the table were a message. The goal is a well-trained, obedient Israel.

The United States is a superpower. If the United States wants a broken, battered Israel, it will get a broken, battered Israel. This is a collision between a tank and an ATV, between a stealth bomber and a glider. But the question the White House ought to be asking itself is whether riding roughshod over Israel serves its goals - whether a crushed Israel is an American interest.

The answer is unequivocal: no. Already, Israel's public humiliation is hurting America. It is making even moderate Arabs unwilling to contribute anything to advancing the diplomatic process. And without a significant Arab contribution, there will be no diplomatic process.

But a continued tough love policy toward Israel is liable to do damage that is far more serious - and irreversible. Without a strong Israel, a Middle East peace can neither be established nor survive. Without a strong Israel, the Middle East will go up in flames...

Actually, in a lot of world cultures (don't know about Arabs), the fist with an upward pointed thumb doesn't mean A-OK or "good job". It is roughly the equivalent of the middle finger. Means "up yours".

Hitchcock liked having people plummet to their death from national monuments; he pulled the same stunt with the Statue of Liberty in Sabotage.

Vertigo was built around plummeting from another landmark, and he even threw a plummet into the climax of Rear Window. I think that's what they call a "motif."

I watched "Monsters v Aliens" recently. There's a nice homage to Hitch with Ginormica running across the rooftops of San Francisco, slipping, falling and hanging on to a raingutter, only to slip and drop inches to the ground. No one else around me got it, save my daughter who is becoming a film student.

Many in both the US and Europe echo the demonization of Israel while no one ever even mentions the full blown hatred by Arabs so they have no incentive to soften their stand. In fact, sensing where Obama's real sympathies lie, if anything they will probably harden their position since they know it's Israel that's gonna feel the pressure from the POTUS. 2. I worked on a big program in a government lab. When it failed abysmally after extravagant promises were made, the people in charge said things like, "That's research. We learned a lot, but the contractors couldn't implement our vision." They were promoted.

3. I've seen the USA squander leads that looked insuperable. I've seen the USA get off the mat when it looked done for and take back the championship. I can't disagree with your dubiousness, but the distribution of outcomes has long tails--positive and negative.

I am out for a hour or so. Playing basketball with the kids. Maybe I should call the medic right now!

Returned. 86 degree Fahrenheit and 90% humidity - after sunset.

I never really see this point of view expressed, but I don't think its beyond all realms of possibility, that the big O just might not like Israel and if he cld be open and honest he just might root for the Palis.

I'm sorry, I'm def not a troofer, kook, or conspiracy theorist, but I have yet to be convinced that Obama likes the America we have been or the America we are. I'm sure he wants to create an America he actually could love, but I still think Obama is the same one that hung out with the likes of Ayers et al, a 60's style extremist that would sympathize with the likes of the Baader-Meinhof type organization and maintains those or similar extremist views. I personally believe the best interests of the country and our ability to defend ourselves is not the same interest that he has.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm lost in the drift of the comments but my observation on the topic of Israel and the ObamUHtrons is that i find it so remarkable that given the treatment Israeli's receive from (more than one mind you) Dhimmicrat president(s) they still get an overwhelming majority of the Jewish vote.
The DNC can take them for granted. I mean Hillary was all kissieface with Arafat's wife, et al, and yet she is adored by the Juice. Why is that?

I think and hope you are right. But I don't think it will happen this month, and probably not this year.

President Obama has expanded the war against the Taliban, and things seem to be going well in Iraq. At the same time, he has a diplomatic initiative to encourage other Middle Eastern nations to recognize Israel. I'm not sure why this is an occassion to criticize Obama. Is he supposed to simply bomb every country that doesn't recognize Israel, right now? Obama has been President for less than half a year, and he's doing some outreach to the Muslim world. Sorry if this upsets anyone.

I read today that Merkel insists that Israel stop building in the "settlement" regions as this is stopping the progress of the "two state solution".

When will these fuktards, all of them, Merkel, Sarkozy, Blair, Brown, Obama, Clinton..............on and on, realise that the Arabs and, more particularly, the muslims, are not interested in a two state solution, never have never will? They want the destruction of Israel and the removal of all Jews from the middle east.

Wake up you idiots!

Good lord, is that a real story? It's like Gore at Monticello.

The "Gore at Monticello" story is a hoax - & perpetrated by Ann Coulter:

Not going to win friends with this observation, but I knew on reading the story that someone would bring up the "definition of insanity" and actually there were 2. The only problem with that is it is incorrect. People constantly do the same thing over and over and get different results: you might practice a skill at a sport or a musical instrument and (hopefully) improve; you might ask a woman out 10 times and the 11th time she says yes; water eventually wears down the mightiest rocks; it's the yin or yang principle, I forget which, but what it boils down to is persistence.

It's one of those maxims, like Occam's Razor, that has a ring of truth to it because it's true sometimes, but since it isn't always true it ultimately stifles thought.

"In response, a senior White House source said talks with the Arab states are continuing with the aim of obtaining a commitment to make gestures toward Israel, and there is still hope for progress."

I hope so also. Perhaps they'll change. Hmmmm, being at the eye of the storm for too many decades, let me to clutch at more traditional prospectives prevailing Mid. East affairs

[and with that, strive up into the air condition unit getting enough cool environment to snore]
