What history tells us is that when there are two intractable foes who are locked in a struggle where neither can gain the upper hand and both will be utterly destroyed if a military option is employed, the resolution comes only when one side is exhausted and collapses. The USSR collapsed due to its having been bankrupted by the West. Britain collapsed in its struggles to maintain India due to it's own bankruptcy. The same will happen here--but not anytime soon.

As long as there are people who keep funneling money to that region, there will be this unholy equilibrium. The side which runs out of money first will lose. That's my simple reading of history.

The alternative is, of course, all-out war. Tough to say where that would end and how far it would escalate.

We've seen other foreign affair situations where this Administration seems to have a lack of historical perspective.
I offer up for example, Iran. While I believed President Obama's first statement (through the State Department) was ok, after it was obvious that not only had Dinnerjacket "stolen the election" but that his regime was beating, shooting and MURDERING his fellow citizens, Obama got tougher in his rhetoric (though for reasons unknown to me the words "Freedom" and "Democracy" were not used by Obama) he was still clearly looking - perhaps impatiently - for the "revolution" to either succeed in a hurry or get put down in a hurry so that he could negotiate with the Iranian government over nukes and other things. And yet some 30 years after the Mullah's took over, Iran has become more and more intransigent, despite efforts by both Republican and Democratic Presidents to try to "engage" them.
It's almost as if history pre- January 20, 2009, is irrelevant to him*. And if that's true, it doesn't speak well for America's future foreign relations with anyone in the Arab or Persian worlds and ought to make Israel very, very nervous indeed.
*Of course it's not irrelevant if he can blame it on Bush.

That's a very scary, though I think completely realistic, analysis. Thinking it through to its logical conclusion, it suggests the collapse of Israel's foes in the middle east won't occur until oil reserves run out, or a less expensive alternative fuel is developed, whichever comes first.

It's hard to get the Arab countries to change. Concepts like education reform, religious reform, economic reform etc. are intangible, not sexy, and long-term processes which demand patience, vision, and steadfastness.

On the other hand, withdrawal from land and (bad faith) signed agreements on the lawn in front of the world media are much more tangible signs of "success". The only missing ingredient is to press the more flexible side to the wall.

I watched "Monsters v Aliens" recently. There's a nice homage to Hitch with Ginormica running across the rooftops of San Francisco, slipping, falling and hanging on to a raingutter, only to slip and drop inches to the ground. No one else around me got it, save my daughter who is becoming a film student.

The problem with Pres. Obama's foreign policy is relatively simple. He believes perception is reality. He perceives the positions of America's enemies are based on an apathy for Bush, thus if he shows America's enemies he is the anti-Bush they will love us. Unfortunately he will be as successful in bending the reality of geopolitics to his perceived vision as he would be in defying gravity. Unfortunately for everyone else Pres. Obama will not be disabused of this notion until, like those trying to defy gravity, his policies go SPLAT when they hit the rocks of reality.
