Russia Allows Afghanistan Flyovers

World | Fri, Jul 3, 2009 at 10:53:55 am PDT

This is a welcome development, but I’m sure Putin has his own reasons for agreeing to it: Russia Opens Route for U.S. to Fly Arms to Afghanistan.

MOSCOW — The Russian government has agreed to allow American troops and weapons bound for Afghanistan to fly over Russian territory, providing an important new corridor for the United States military as it escalates efforts to win the eight-year-old war, officials from both sides said Friday.

Maybe he'll allow this as an inducement for us not to say anything when he takes over Ukraine.

Think he still holds a grudge for the Afghani's kicking the USSR's ass?

I wonder if an agreement on Georgia factored into this new and sudden 'detente'.

4 Nevergiveup  Fri, Jul 3, 2009 10:56:28am

Maybe because we are agreeing with them and China about not imposing any additional sanctions on Iran and they are MAJOR trading partners with Iran?

Perhaps the world is not making the mistakes of the 1930s over again after all.

This is good news, but an overland route is needed as well. It would also be good if Russia would relax on some of the "over the pole" commercial air-routes, there's a great deal of fuel savings to be had if they ever do.

8 DistantThunder  Fri, Jul 3, 2009 10:57:49am

Clearly, this is related to throwing the eastern european missile defense shield, and therefore, the citizens of eastern europe - under the bus.

O stands for obvious, and Obama cynical and dangerous politics are obvious.

If Putin likes Obama and is supportive of him, it's a sign he feels free to pursue his own interests. I have to admit, I don't see this as a necessarily good development.

"Just when you think someone has plumbed the moral depths, sold out every redeeming aspect and can get no worse; they then prove you wrong.

From his webshyte, thanks to Cynicaldragon for the info.

Israel ran a brilliant PR campaign on their Gaza invasion. Not only were their minions pumping out plausible lines on the world media, there was micro propaganda produced on an individual basis.

...On the world propaganda war, Israel out guns all other nations. Shame that so many children die in their firing lines.

Not a word, not on Israli deaths or on rockets being fired into Israel. Sssssssshhhhhhhhhh. Remember the New Labour mantra on selective facts.

"I won't be stopping off for a Subway any more.

[Link: www.dallasnews.com...]

While serving in Afghanistan with the U.S. Army Reserve, Leon Batie Jr. dodged roadside bombs and scrambled to safety when rockets pierced the night sky.

When he returned to Dallas in early 2006, another battle loomed.

As Batie was returning from Afghanistan, he learned he was being stripped of the two Subway restaurants he bought before mobilizing.

The stores were sold to Subway insiders, with one transaction yielding a Subway executive a $100,000 profit, according to a lawsuit Batie filed last year in state court in Dallas County. One issue in the case is set for trial this week.

If the business was doing that poorly it wouldn't have sold for so much profit.

Using his absence and the alledged poor business skills of his brother, Subway has made a profit from a serving soldier."

Don't fall for it. The free toaster is crappy.

29 wee fury  Fri, Jul 3, 2009 11:08:07am

This part of the article was interesting --
"But Russia wants to tie the negotiations to the dispute over American plans to build a missile defense system in Eastern Europe. While Washington maintains the system is intended to defend against a future threat from Iran, Moscow sees it as aimed at itself and wants the agreement that Mr. Obama and Mr. Medvedev sign to link limits on offensive and defensive weapons."

What do you mean?

We made a deal with Russia to not support Iran sanctions. In return Russia allows U.S. military flights over it's airspace into Afghanistan.

Allegedly.

Two things about Putin - all his deals are raw deals, and he never sells unless there's a huge profit to be made. He had a thick commie shell, but underneath it he's gangster all the way through.

re: #6 Ojoe

Perhaps the world is not making the mistakes of the 1930s over again after all.

Putin certainly doesn't want to make the mistakes of the 1980s again, that's for sure. Or at least he wants to avenge them.
