WSJ: Franken Stole the Election

Politics • Views: 3,616

The Wall Street Journal’s editors weigh in on Al Franken’s Senate win: The ‘Absentee’ Senator.

The Minnesota Supreme Court yesterday declared Democrat Al Franken the winner of last year’s disputed Senate race, and Republican incumbent Norm Coleman’s gracious concession at least spares the state any further legal combat. The unfortunate lesson is that you don’t need to win the vote on Election Day as long as your lawyers are creative enough to have enough new or disqualified ballots counted after the fact.

There needs to be serious reform to correct voting irregularities, like a simple ID check and maybe purple fingers like Iraq.

Good. I expect Senator Franken to have some sort of epic meltdown within a couple of months, tops.

Doesn't really help if the people counting the ballots are actively changing the count and adding ballots that should be disqualified.

I wonder if you guys should switch to the Canadian style ballot. On a black field the names of the people running for election are printed in white, the mark is made in pen on a black circle. Simple to count and hard to declare invalid.

By ACORN and its media allies. As we know, they have been accused of fraud in a number of states. That remains to be seen but there is no doubt at all that they have worked long and hard to undermine any measures, including voter ID, that would help to mitigate fraud.

Mr. Franken went ballistic. "What is this?" he asked, holding the little blue ball in his hands and seething. I moved on to other subjects, and not surprisingly, he lost control of the show. After I departed, he remained visibly perturbed. In fact, three hours later, a friend of mine observed him leaving the studio with the ball still in his hand as he snarled about it and my insouciance toward him.

WA has fill in the circle also, but not white text on black. I like that.
I would also like to see accounting type procedures at precinct level.

First the number of ballots issued to a precinct has to be know. (In WA ballots where had out to precinct workers uncounted).
First step is to reconcile cast ballots to unused ballots to total ballots issued.
If they're is a discrepancy, sequester the ballots and resolve.

When a total number of valid ballots cast is verified start counting.
For each race: the number votes + under votes + over votes = totals ballots.

Only when a precincts ballots can meet these standards are they added to to state wide totals.

How were the ballots being counted, anyway? If they were being hand counted, having a few hundred errors amongst millions upon millions of ballots doesn't seem all that bad. It wouldn't be a problem, either, if a candidate had won by a large margin, but when it's as close as this election was, it kinda is a problem.

Personally, I think voting machines are still the way to go. Diebold's implementation may have left something to be desired, but that doesn't mean the whole notion of a voting machine is a bad one.

Machine voting has the entire issue of software / hardware security and verification. The larger issue is voting record.

With electronic voting we have no original record of what the voter did, only an electronic record in a data base. With a paper ballot we can go back and look at the original and recount the original. Not something record and stored by software which may be suspect itself.

Palin's rabid fans are becoming more of a problem. Goldberg posted some of his hatemail earlier. Even if she were to step out of the spotlight, her fans would continue to screw it up for her. I don't think she has any chance left at a national career.

I hadn't seen Goldberg's hatemail-- I'm checking it out right now. I have to say I think his response is completely right:

If Sarah Palin follows the advice of readers like them, she's doomed on the national political stage. She'll make a great Joan of Arc for a certain segment of the public, but she'll never go beyond that. And I think that would be a shame. The upshot of a lot of e-mail is that she hasn't done a single thing wrong — at least nothing that warrants criticism. The idea that she's, in effect, done everything right, baffles me. Palin has lost a huge chunk of her popularity over the last six months. Some readers say that's because the media has been unfair to her. And that's true! The press has been unfair. But guess what? The press isn't going away and successful politicians learn to deal with the reality of liberal media bias. You don't get extra points or extra votes because the press slimes you. What Palin needs to do is figure out how to win back the people she lost, not elicit more cheers from the folks she already has. That's how politics works.

And this:

If Sarah Palin becomes nothing more than expression of populist resentments of a certain portion of the base she will lose the ability to persuade anybody who isn't already a diehard fan. That is not the route to success.

I agree with you. I think Palin's only chance left at a national career, quite frankly, is if she wants to run a talk show of some sort.

Which could easily be remedied with voting machines that print paper receipts. But that wont fit the MSM narrative I on the subject I guess.

That's an I idea that'll work and have thought about.

Vote electronically.
Print receipt.
Voter reviews the ballot.
The then submits the ballot.

The account style rules I posted above would still be used.

The printed receipts would be retained to compare to the electronic record and for use in recounts.

The other huge piece to the whole vote integrity thing is legal voters and one person one vote. That's where proof of citizen ship, photo ID etc come in.

I think this is a lefty site so take with a grain of salt....
Tea Party Movement Loses Steam

In the run-up to the first round of Tea Parties, conservative activists were aided enormously by coverage from Fox News and the endorsements of many Republican stars. Fox News ran dozens of segments about the events, dispatching five of its stars — Sean Hannity, Greta Van Susteren, John Gibson, Glenn Beck, and Neil Cavuto — across the country to cover them live. Newt Gingrich endorsed the events, speaking at a Tea Party in Times Square and dispatching talking points to protesters through his American Solutions organization. Dozens of Republican members of Congress spoke at the events.
...
But the collaboration between the official Republican establishment and the Tea Parties has not lasted into June. The RNC has no plans to get involved with any Tea Parties. A spokesman for Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio), who jaunted around northern California to attend several Tea Parties, said that his holiday plans were private but would probably not include Tea Parties. Gingrich will not attend any of the Tea Parties, although he recorded video messages for events in Birmingham and Nashville “at the request of the respective organizers,” according to spokesman Dan Kotman.

Media coverage has also gotten a little bit more scarce. Coverage on Fox News has largely been limited to interviews with Tea Party organizers on the network’s morning shows. While sources at Fox would not discuss their plans for covering the weekend events, they confirmed that no anchors would be attending and that the attendance and news value of the events looked to be lower than that of the April rallies.

Ron Paul (And the Birch Society) Seem to have no trouble getting a speaking gig at the Tea Parties....

Keynote speaker Congressman Ron Paul addressed a sea of about 200 participants clad in red, white and blue and many clutching American flags. He advocated for an end to the income tax, the Federal Reserve and ousting of federal government from citizens personal lives.

"Our goal should be consistently one and that is to promote liberty," the Republican from Surfside Beach said. "We are ripe for revolution."

The event was organized by the Victoria County Young Republicans with the help of other community groups.
....
Fellow speakers echoed the cry for smaller government and reclaiming the country.

"If you go away with nothing else, go away with this - this is a constitutional Republic, this is not a Democracy," said Norlene Ckodre, president of the John Birch Society of Victoria. "We must take back our nation."

Powell airs doubts on Obama agenda

Mr. King prompted Mr. Powell's comments by showing him video archive footage of Mr. Powell's comments at the 1996 Republican Convention in San Diego, where Mr. Powell talked about his opposition to big government.

"The federal government has become too large and too intrusive in our lives," Mr. Powell said then. "We can no longer afford solutions to our problems that result in more entitlements, higher taxes to pay for them, more bureaucracy to run them, and fewer results to show for it."

Mr. Powell said that now that he still believes what he said then, but that he would put it in different terms now.

You know, I just don't want to hear from this guy anymore. He got what he wanted and is now complaining about it. He says he still believes what he believed back then but voted for a guy who was opening saying he was going to do the opposite. Before the Gore/ Bush election went to the courts, Ryan Lizza wrote a very revealing article at TNR called Overtime. (I believe it was the Nov 28, 2000 edition.) The gist of Lizza's argument was that Gore would win because Democrats had better election lawyers. The arrogance of the article was astounding and it made the cries of foul when the Supreme Court put an end to the shenanigans of Florida's high court seem so hollow.

Franken vs. Coleman is a perfect example of what usually happens.

BTW, Franken will be the 4th consecutive Jew to hold that Senate seat. Boschwitz, Wellstone, and Coleman are/were all also Jewish. More the sort of stat you'd expect to see in New York or New Jersey.

Haven't ID checks been called "racist"?

In Mexico you are required to have a special photo id in order to vote in elections. A friend who is from Mexico (legally here) showed it to me and I have a scrubbed copy of it to show friends.

It is not racist to require a photo id and calling is racist is a method of the left to divert attention away from the real issue. Don't let them change the subject on you.

Funny, it seems that illegals from Mexico are the ones we are supposed to be racist against in these matters when it their own country they are required to have a photo id to vote.

Go figure...

Didn't read all previous comments so I apologize if someone has already made this observation: It was Uncle Joe Stalin who made the very factual statement: 'It doesn't matter how the votes are made it matters who counts them.' So true.
As for determining a winner in a political contest like this, I suggest we go back to dueling. You know, pistols at ten paces.
Perfect solution. Just think about it. After each close contest we end up with ONE HALF of the politicans we had prior to the election.
I know some of you will think of the diminishing series that will never vanish. 1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, etc.

Coming from NY, I am used to voters behaving like sheep. Then I was amazed by the fawning acceptance of Obama when he ran for President...but by electing Al Franken to the United States Senate, the people of Minnesota have gone for the record.

The beer was Hamm's...not sure where it was brewed, but I thought it was Wisconsin. I could be wrong.

St. Paul, Minnesota. The buildings of the old brewery are still standing NE of the downtown area.

Tom

IIRC, it's called a Credencial and is issued by the IFE, Instituto Federal de Eleciones. It carries your photo, your thumbprint and your RFC, Registro Federal de Causantes, it's sort of like a SocSec number. At the polling place, you fill out your paper ballot [don't know if the recent presidential election was still a paper ballot], stick it in the box marked for the party of your candidate, and get your thumb drenched in an indelible brown ink that remains for days and days. Maybe we SHOULD try something similar.
