I'm a traditionalist when it comes to the flag...
The flag should not be used as "wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery",[1] or for covering a speaker's desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general (exception for coffins). Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.

Indeed, God Bless America. While we have made some pretty bad mistakes during our history (e.g., slavery) we have always tried to correct them (e.g., the Civil War) and because WE know we are not perfect but strive to become better, we are indeed a shining beacon of FREEDOM to the entire World.
God Bless America, indeed.

Invisible to tourists, the Statue of Liberty's 25-foot-long (7.6-meter-long) left foot, pictured in 1984, brushes against a little-known detail that nevertheless loomed large in sculptor Frederic Bartholdi's design.
Broken chains beneath the statue's toga symbolize freedom from oppression in general and the United States' abolition of slavery—just 20 years prior to the statue's dedication—in particular.
I did not know that.

___ From the Funds of Montezuma, to the Hands of the Greedy ___
No bastard ever won a war by funding windmills to defend his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastards build windmills for his country.
While admiring the fireworks today, see the enemies of the United States quake in fear at those fireworks, rejoicing that Future Combat Systems no longer exists :
the Pentagon formally dissolved Future Combat Systems late last month amid growing concerns about the program's cost and capabilities.
The Army now plans to equip all of its brigade combat teams with the program's technology instead of focusing on just a handful. It also will develop a new armored vehicle because previous models were scrapped after being deemed unprepared for threats like road side bombs.[1]
While you enjoy your hot dogs and beer today, ask yourself how the most critical elements of FCS (the network centric upgrades) will survive by trying to join the Brigade Combat Team funding, requiring approval by the Congress and their new 60 Baboon majority:
Boeing will now compete with other companies to manage the successor programs to the Future Combat Systems Brigade Combat Team, a $160 billion Army modernization program, the U.S. Department of Defense said.[2]
While you watch your children today, and they enjoy the freedoms of Americans, ask yourself how the weak kneed "leaders" in Congress and the Executive will defend them:
Senior Army leaders Wednesday expressed more worry about the affect Congress will have on their budget.
"We are very concerned about the ability to sustain the Army modernization funding that we need," says Lt. Gen. Stephen Speakes, the deputy chief of staff for force development, or G8, during a press conference with reporters at the Pentagon. "[3]
Instead of assuring the transfer of critical technologies from FCS to the BCT
(Brigade Combat Team), to defend your home land and children, Broke Obozo and the Congress of Baboons want to pass the Carbon Knee-Cap and Trade Bill, to defend this great land with windmill powered tanks, Tofu flavored MREs, and leaflets to drop behind enemy lines with government funded art school renderings of Michael Moore and Rosie O' Donnell savaging the enemies grain stores.
Even though they formally changed their motto, the Army is still looking
for a few good men, not Congressional excuses:
"funding is more important than ever as the Army moves forward with its plan."
"There is some turmoil right now in redefining the requirements and putting together the acquisition pieces to meet those requirements," Thompson says. "While we are in turmoil, you need as much stability as possible in funding. I would submit to you that the overarching premise is Army does need ground combat vehicle and does need to continue to modernize."
Lawmakers have yet to fully weigh in on the future of the Army's modernization efforts. Only the House passed its version of the DoD Authorization bill. In that legislation, lawmakers wanted a series of reports before the Army could spend portions of the funding[3]
(end part 1)

(part 2)
[T]he Army by early September will try to reassure Congress and the Defense Department, about its new plan for modernization
After canceling a portion of the FCS program June 23, the Army set up a task force to come up with a new strategy in 120 days.
the group is relying on experts in DoD and outside of the military for help in developing the plan. In fact, the Army put together a panel of outside experts to make recommendations.
Speakes says this ensures the Army is taking a holistic approach to the development of its strategy. He adds the approach includes combat veterans and current and former brigade commanders.
He adds that the Army is facing a dual sense of urgency needing to get tools into combat and needing to get the support of Congress that it can deliver capabilities.
Speakes says DoD Secretary Robert Gates has offered assurances that he would protect the Army's funding. But DoD officials are meeting with House and Senate appropriation and authorization committee members to ensure the funds are secured.
The task force's report will be finished after Labor Day and reviewed by senior DoD leaders before going to the Congress, he adds.[3]
Your country is in the best of hands -- your own -- not the Baboons.

An interesting little factoid, the Russian Navy helped deter Britain and France from intervening on the Confederate side during the Civil War.
In 1863, during the American Civil War, the Russian Navy's Atlantic and Pacific Fleets wintered in the American ports of New York and San Francisco respectively. Some historians credit this visit as a major factor in deterring France and England from entering the war on the Confederate side.[1][who?]. Delahaye states that besides supporting the Union, Russia was also preparing for a war with France and England should they intervene in the Polish insurrection of 1863. The Russian Navy was weak and could easily be blockaded in its home ports, but if it was in the US when the war started it could more easily attack British and French commerce.[2]
They were given a royal welcome in New York especially,

I should have said 're-opens'...it has been closed since 9/11.
To be honest? I am somewhat conflicted about it, as it is such a part of our country, and the statue was a beacon for so many of our ancestors, mine included, who came here to have a life, literally...yet it could very well be a target for terrorists now that the crown is again open.
The One, and the dim-wit Demonrat US Congressman, Anthony Weiner pushed for the re-opening. In this case, to me, it is a case of 'Be careful what you wish for.'

F-22s are a hard call, depending on what's coming down the pike in UCAVs, and I suspect Gates knew he'd be overriden on that, playing politics - and well!

the thread has lots of youtube clips of the how -- now let's give a moment's thought to the why.
The New Colossus
(emma lazarus, 1883)
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Heh. Elsewhere on the Web -- specifically, on a pr0n blog that I won't link to because it's quite X-rated -- the bisexual blog owner posted a little July 4th montage of hot chicks in flag bikinis, plus a photo of Mark Spitz wearing nothing but a mustache, 7 or 8 gold medals, and Star Spangled bikini briefs.
