National Geographic's July 4th Special

Video | Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at 5:53:45 pm PDT

It’s pretty cool that National Geographic is putting full-length shows on YouTube with minimal advertising, and allowing embedding. Lots of interesting stuff on fireworks in this one...

Happy Independence day, Doc.

You to. I parked in a parking lot near a parade field and went into town. When I came back all 1200 plebes were drilling on the field and in the lot. I was kinda stuck, so I hung around and watched them for about an hour. They finally moved off and I was able to go on my way.

This is interesting - in depth dicussion and tour of the lab where it's all done:

Richard Dawkins interviews Craig Venter for "The Genius of Charles Darwin", the Channel 4 UK TV program which won British Broadcasting Awards' "Best Documentary Series" of 2008. Craig Venter founded The Institute for Genomic Research and has been credited with being instrumental in mapping the human genome. His team published the first complete genome of an individual human - Venter's own DNA sequence.

Good news: I think it's looking less likely that Palin has an impending scandal about to break.
Bad news: She's lost her mind
Palin's Attorney Threatening Lawsuits
It's looking increasingly likely that she can't handle bloggers and comedians. Imagine the right wing outrage if Obama was threatening to sue over Nirth Certifikit posts on the internet. This is just something that serious national politicians just don't do. They rise above it.

RE: Palin's potential lawsuit(s)

Well pointed out but...
...Sarah has been the recipient, and her family the victim, of the most vicious public wilding ever. This simply *must* be stopped. Although Sarah may be a public figure, what they said about Trig, Willow, and Bristol is beyond the pale. Further, willfully misusing the ethics system has chewed up $2M of Alaskan taxpayer money. Simply to make war on a woman who reminds the Left of how disgusting they really are.

We shouldn't have taken this ever, and this is one good place to put a stop to it. The Leftist Brats (but I repeat myself) must be held to account for this sort of thing - else we're that much down the road to dissolution and/or outright conflict.

1) Family members should be off limits, unless they themselves put themselves in the public light.
(Decency, Fire in theater, public interest in fostering participation)
See: Billy Carter vs. Amy Carter (1970's behaviour)

2) Willfully lying shouldn't be excused even in this realm. And it isn't - the actual bar includes "willful malice".

Pace Westmoreland v. CBS, this'll actually be a lot easier to prove on both counts. Courts can, and in time will, insist that bloviators actually fact-check dey own azzes before they bloviate. And with everybody having a twitter, facbook, etc. The Whackazz Left (but I repeat myself) could find itself in a pickle.

True, but not a better place. Back then, Chicago was even more corrupt and both gangsters and politicos used sluggers to attack reporters who exposed their misdeeds. Since that stopped happening, the exposure of corruption in Chicago usually ends with at least some of the corrupt officials going to prison, which did not happen 75 years ago.

She might have had a future if she'd ignored the derision, focused on doing her job as governor, and come back in 2012 (or better yet, 2016). As it is, she's over - and I say this as someone who likes her.

The best thing she could have done was remain governor, brush up on her out of state skills and lay low until ready. If she decides to get out on the National stage with her thin skin she had better be ready, or the MSM will crucify her.

Good Free Speech point, bad idea in real life. If something like that were created here, even moderate Muslims we work with might turn on us.

I like the idea of bursting the bubble of muslim religious sensitivity in that sort of way, I must admit, but I have to agree that in practical terms it wouldn't be a good thing. That level of open contempt for religious taboos has to originate from the religious group in question, otherwise it will just be seen as a hostile assault by 'crusaders'.

I'm reminded of those in the 1980s who struck back against the increasingly radicalized feminist movement. There was a very loud undercurrent of voices telling conservative women to let their husbands be the bread-winners, to return to home and hearth.

One of the most prominent of those voices belonged to Phyllis Schlafly.

Had Palin been a liberal we would have been subjected to a media campaign from the likes of the ACLU or NOW regarding the chauvinistic reasoning behind the treatment of Sarah Palin. The media would also have had a field day with this topic. However, since she represented the Republican party they have had little if anything to say regarding this and have left her in the wilderness regarding the distinct differences in the treatment of women in politics. This was clearly pointed out however with regards to Hillary Clinton. However this was not the case with Sarah Palin where "the heat" went beyond the norm for any candidate: both male or female.

The Left has tried to contort the issue of what is free speech and what should be taxpayer subsidized. They point out that when taxpayers call for an end to subsidies for offensive craplola posing as "art", that is is squelching freedom of speech.

I don't care if someone wastes their own time and money making an obscene expression of their freedom of speech. But when they received a taxpayer funded subsidy to make it, then yeah, I have a problem with it.

If you need a cash subsidy to express your freedom of speech then you have to deal with the "censoring" that comes from people who gave you the cash. Duh.

re: #233 solomonpanting

I think the term "valuable" is not exactly applicable. The work in question might go on the block at Sotheby's and bring in several million dollars, but that doesn't mean it had any value as in adding to the political discourse of the time. And artistic value is a different animal on its own. Much of what passes for "art" these days is crap, and I say that as a lover of fine art.

The place it serves in free speech questions is the obvious one. By not coercively stopping you, the right to free speech is affirmed, even in a case that is distasteful. Freedom of speech means little when the only speech permitted is that which the majority agrees with.

And there's another question that you should have asked. What role should the Federal Government have in producing such a work? The answer is obvious. None. None at all.

Who are you to define what "valuable" is. Free speech is what it is; you don't have to like it.

It is my opinion that your post smacks of moral relativism. "Valuable" in this context, in my humble opinion, means how it contributes to the advancement of our culture and benefit to society. Pooping on something is not, in my opinion, art. Public homosexual acts performed in a California park for a Master's thesis ( have to find a linky) do not advance education. It is my opinion that many other Americans would agree with that.

I believe that there is a regional gap going on where Sarah Palin is concerned and that gap mirrors (and in someways is) the cultural rift in this country. Around here Palin was wildly popular. Far more popular that McCain himself. We're part of that "fly-over" country that is where a large part of the Republican base lives. Palin may or may not have helped him win individual States (McCain would have won handily in my state, regardless of Palin), but she helped him keep the margin of victory in the popular vote fairly tight. I think Sarah Palin started great but the more McCain's handlers coached her, she started looking more and more lost. When she is herself she can be a great speaker that really has a way of reaching people across political lines. On the other hand when she reads from a teleprompter or recites a rehearsed speech, its not so good. But one thing was obvious from the campaign, she needs to read a whole lot more and get more informed so she can go into a viper pit and handle herself and craft her own responses off the cuff instead of trying to remember what she was supposed to say.

Mandy, thank you for that.....the memories of 9/11 are still so vivid....so damned vivid. Time has not lessened the pain.

I had posted earlier that the idea of re-opening the crown of the Statue of Liberty to the public again, for the first time since 9/11, as they did today, worried me, and it always will...the images never leave a lot of us in the metropolitan area, but the ones who choose to forget?

That is more fearful, and at the rate the re-building is going on? It may not be finished until the mid-century.

The One and all the stimulus sh*t? Giving a stimulus package to help in the re-building would not have been a bad idea...certainly far better than Murtha's airport.

Look for a short term appreciation in the dollar:

Dollar Rises Versus Euro on Signs Economic Rebound Is Faltering

The dollar rose against the euro this week as speculation the economic recovery is faltering boosted demand for the safety of the U.S. currency.

The Dollar Index, which tracks the currency against six major U.S. trading partners, advanced to near the highest in a week after a report showed U.S. employers cut more jobs last month than economists forecast. The pound had its first weekly loss in a month after a report showed U.K. service industries were little changed in June as the recession persisted.

“We had a disappointing jobs figure and data has generally tended to underwhelm,” said Steven Barrow, head of Group of 10 currency research in London at Standard Bank Plc, who forecast the dollar may gain to $1.38 per euro next week. “Risk aversion is increasing a little bit and that’s helped the dollar.”

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I was making a watermelon/ice-cream run...

One well known preachers is Voddie Bauchman. Before the election, he wrote an article entitled DID MCCAIN MAKE A PRO-FAMILY VP PICK?

[...]

Are we really saying that we want to completely erase the distinctions between men and women. Do we really believe that it is good for our country to promote the view that women are merely men who happen to be biologically capable of having children (when it does not interfere with career advancement, of course)? I don’t think so. What do we do with the Bible’s admonition in Titus chapter two? Are Christian conservatives saying that Paul’s instructions concerning women’s duty to be “keepers of their homes” has somehow been overturned in light of recent discoveries? Or are we saying that pro-family means one thing when we’re in church, but something else when we’re trying to beat the Democrats?

[...]

This is pretty standard fundamentalist teaching.

Without her, it would have been a massacre.

That's a good part of it, she made him win bigger in states he would have won anyway, but did not help in the blue states. The problem as I see it, is that Palin may continue to help you with conservative white males, but not the rest unless she can do better on the campaign trail.

Oh, and I just checked SNL. Reruns. If they were live, Tina Fey would be out in front with her shtick. Good timing, Sarah.

Tina Fey's act was probably the most effective tactic used against Palin, mostly because it was clearly within bounds and it didn't come across as mean.

According to the definition posted, a Classic Liberal is also a believer in Adam Smith's Invisible Hand theory, which is included in the Classic school of economics.

The current administration is the opposite of that, believing in government control and intervention into almost everything.

For a supporter of Obama to be intellectually honest, they would have to say that they are in favor of Keynesian economics and a whole lot of government involvement in every day life. I don't believe that is included in the posted definition of Classic Liberal.

Mandy, I'm not freetoken, but I think you may have misread his note. He didn't say that certain preachers are calling specifically for Palin to get out of government, but that a lot of preachers believe, and preach, that "a woman's place is in the home." Which a lot of them do.

And then you point out that if someone makes it a lifelong pursuit to learn how to copy art they could conceivably do it. Which is not at all the same thing.

My point remains the same. Its not art if the average Joe could make the same thing or something indistinguishable.

Is it art to blast paintballs at a canvass and make a groovy design? Nope. Not in my opinion. But if you are in the market, I can make some fabulous paintball "art" for oh about $10K.

And there you have nailed it and I think we are in agreement. It's all opinion.

It was not my intent to twist your statement, it was intended to put an exclamation point to the opinion part.

When she is herself she can be a great speaker that really has a way of reaching people across political lines. On the other hand when she reads from a teleprompter or recites a rehearsed speech, its not so good.

Hmmm. My reaction was just the opposite. When she speaks from a text, she can really deliver. (The occasional winking and mannerisms are unprofessional, to me, but still.) When she wanders and free-associates, off the cuff, the individual phrases all sound appealing but they don't add up to anything.

Reading a transcript of what she said is a shock...it rarely builds to a point or examines an idea, but is just a string of appealing catch phrases. Since officeholders are judged largely by what they say in public, her "shooting from the hip" seems to me very useful in campaigning but a real drawback in governing and addressing specific issues.

Hi Mich - we're still talking about Sarah Palin? Geez I want President Obama to be former President Obama as much as anyone here, but it's waaay too early for a discussion on who will run in 2012.
I figure the Dems will try to blame Bush (naturally) for the economy, but that won't play to SMART voters, who know that the Dems, by 2010 will have controlled both houses of Congress for four years and have rammed through economic measures or measures like cap and trade which will hurt the economy - it won't be Obama v Bush, it'll be Senator so and so vs Senator so and so.
As for Palin's 20 second pause, I honestly don't believe most of the cutie Katie interview - they did HOURS of interview and then Katie and the network went to work on it.
Could Palin have been better prepared? Sure. But she was better prepared to govern than Obama or McCain but the MSM never would have done to Obama what they did to Palin and we both know that.

I first posted that Bauchman essay some time ago... when I first brought up this issue.

How many sermons in this country, during your lifetime, have been preached on that Titus passage? Tens of thousands? Hundreds of thousands? Millions?

Hi, RW...I agree, but there's a large and growing group on the religious right called the Christian Patriarchy Movement, whose main thrust is that women should be "submissive" to men, which includes not holding leadership positions "over" men.

Apparently a good part of Michelle Bachmann's base is of this belief, as she had to explain to them that she had her husband's permission to be in a leadership position. She was less clear in explaining how her having male staffers didn't violate the scripture.

So I'm guessing a sizeable part of Palin's core voters are likewise having to embrace a sort of double standard, within their faith, to do so. And as freetoken says, it'll be interesting to see how that plays out in the long run. Her "leadership role" will no longer be a problem once she's out of office, but a woman in a public career, as opposed to housewife, still goes against the Patriarchy Movement's basic principles.

The basic 'activity' portrayed, and main characters, i.e. Bill (the butcher), is factual. If you google: Five Points, New York City - a wealth of information will be at your fingertips for research, and a fascinating father/child exploration endeavor.

re: #393 swamprat

Seems skewed;
First you get an introduction telling you that she is incoherent.
Then you are shown a "transcript"
But that "transcript does not match what I can hear.

PALIN: That’s why I say, I like ever American I’m speaking with were ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the tax payers looking to bailout.

Right off the bat, that word is "every" and they go on and it gets worse. It is slightly disjointed, but not to the degree they are letting on.. And they lie.
But this is not new.

Transcripts are typically done in a hurry, for deadlines. Many of them have a bunch of typos. How does this change the substance of what Palin is saying in the interview? Are there examples, other than typos, of this "lying"?

Why do you say there was fraud and manipulation? And isn't litigation the fairest way to settle an election this close?

Gee, How did they know that if they just kept recounting the votes, franken would win? If the republicans were hiding franken votes, why were they not indicted?
Actually, I'm glad franken won. We need more democrats like him. He is the best hope for the Republican party, or for the dems to get smarter.

Iron Fist: Here's a link I found useful; it contains the court documents in the Coleman/Franken election case, from beginning to end. It's so detailed, it's maddening. Appears to me, the legal system and election system worked about as transparently as it's possible for flawed human beings to pull off, regardless of how one may feel about the results.

Why do you say there was fraud and manipulation? And isn't litigation the fairest way to settle an election this close?

Here's one example: Changing the rules after the contest had started.

Minnesota law provides only four reasons for ruling an absentee ballot invalid:

1. The voter’s name and address on the return envelop do not match the name and address on the absentee ballot application.

2. The absentee-ballot return envelope is unsigned, or the signature does not match the signature of the voter who signed the absentee ballot application.

3. The voter already had voted.

4. The voter was never registered to vote or was otherwise ineligible to vote in the precinct.

On Dec. 1, Democratic Secretary of State Mark Ritchie asked all county and city election officials on to create a “fifth pile” of absentee ballots for ballots rejected for reasons that do not fit into any of the four lawful criteria.

Actually, counting the legal votes that were cast on election day (or absentee ballots cast before election day) would seem the best way to handle an election. Going back through rejected ballots and having people grok the intent of the voter isn't exactly scientific, no matter whinch side benefits. If it is really that close, then the only possible fair solution is a run-off between the top two candidates. In this case that would have meant re-running the same candidate list. Such a resolution woul dbe a nightmare to try and carry out on a national scale, but on a state scale shoulf be doable. After all, it has taken them until July to come to a decision going through the court system. A revote could have been held in January, and got this issue decided.

Listen to her. For fun, skip the introduction that tells you what to think, don't read the transcript that tells you what to hear, and actually listen. Is it Shakespear or Voltaire? Well, no. But it is a far cry from what is represented.

And those "errors" are "lies". ;-)

OK, I know that the word "grok" comes from Robert Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land, but what does it mean in this context?

swamp, I'm repeating here, but my whole point was that listening to Palin and reading what she said are two totally different experiences. I agree with you.

The introduction is one person's evaluation; the reader can take it or leave it. The transcript is separate. But other than misspelling a word here and there, what are examples of the transcript "misrepresenting" what she said? I'm wanting to learn, here, because I don't see it.

re: #401 Iron Fist

Agreed, and given how long this has taken, there was no good reason not to do what you suggest, IMO.

In re: allegations of fraud though, I have to point this out from the 5-0 unanimous MN decision:

[n]o claim of fraud in the election or during the recount was made by either party
Page 4

and

Coleman's counsel confirmed at oral argument that Coleman makes no claim of fraud on the part of either voters or election officials.

Page 5

So even Coleman's own legal argument did NOT allege fraud.

solomon, I'm not a lawyer, but I'll put swamprat's question to you, since it's relevant. If the Secretary of State's decision you mention was not legal, why wasn't he indicted for it?

I'm not saying the court system was perfect, just that this case was apparently done within the system, with everybody and their laywer watching. That's all. Nothing nefarious about it.

As iceweasel rightly points out, not even the parties themselves claimed anything was improper. They just wanted every last vote counted and argued over, if necessary. And they got it.

re: #404 Dark_Falcon

"Understand fully the essence of" is the meaning I was trying to convey. It is a little more palatable than the two Democrats-one Republican voting on the meaning of an ambiguous ballot that Gore tried in Florida. It still means that some human agency was looking at an ambiguously filled out ballot and trying to determan the true intent of the voter who cast the ballot. They kept doing this over and over until Franken won a round, at which time they decided they had counted enough and it was done.

It was a close race. Do a recount. That is fine, but to keep recounting until your guy turns up on top is, in and of itself, fraud. If you caunt them three times and the first two came up with one answer and the third time came up with another, that does not mean the third count is right. But that is what is being done in these recounts. I blame the Republicans as much as the Democrats. The Republicans won't really fight.

All I'm saying is there is an inherent value to the freedom of speech. The value of what results from that speech is not equal.

Yes, I praised free speech today. I loved that we sang the National Anthem, followed by the Pledge of Alligence. I loved that I was allowed to celebrate and honor Veterans.
Happy 4th of July America! You are still the land of the free and the home of the brave.

God Bless America.

I hear what you're saying, but I don't understand what you mean by "The Republicans won't really fight." Isn't that exactly what Coleman and his team did, even when many in his party were urging him to give it up because of the time and expense? How else can they "fight" it, beyond taking it to the highest court and abiding by the ruling, which they did?

As iceweasel rightly points out, not even the parties themselves claimed anything was improper. They just wanted every last vote counted and argued over, if necessary. And they got it.

Actually, Coleman's side made the following point, obviously to no avail:

The circumstances are different, but Coleman's effort strikes the same legal notes as the Supreme Court lawsuit that handed George W. Bush a victory in Florida and put him in the White House. In that case, Bush's lawyers got the Supreme Court to agree that Al Gore's push to recount ballots in four Florida counties would have resulted in inconsistent standards from one county to another for deciding whether the infamous hanging or dimpled chads should count as legal votes.
"Having once granted the right to vote on equal terms, the State may not, by later arbitrary and disparate treatment, value one person's vote over that of another," the majority wrote in Bush v. Gore.
In the Minnesota trial, entering its second week on Monday, Coleman's lawyers have made similar arguments over and over.
"As part of this process, we have seen that different counties treated the same ballots differently so that voters whose votes counted in one county were rejected in another county," said Ben Ginsberg, a Coleman attorney who was a key member of Bush's Florida legal team in 2000. "In order to achieve equal protection under the law and enfranchise as many people as possible, we need to count all similarly situated ballots."

Revote, or flip a coin.

I'm serious.

If the outcome of an election rests on definitions of valid ballots about which reasonable people can disagree, then the difference between winning and losing is within the margin of error. A coin toss acknowledges that (and, for those who think that way, it allows Providence to take a hand). A coin toss would leave less rancor than death matches over every single doubtful ballot.

My hat is off to you, for effort. Transcripts are not an exact science, but I do know that in writing, a comma represents a pause in speech, of a second or two. Maybe there's no comma there because Palin doesn't pause between the two thoughts, in the video?

True, the audio is about a half second off from the visual, but both are continuous and there are no cuts or dissolves. Why do you think somebody has changed what was said, on a national broadcast that millions of people saw?

And the tape splice done at :56 where it seems as if she stops and gets side tracked, but what they have done is cut her off and then used a spot where she abruptly says "Oh!" to make it sound as if she has interrupted herself. That is really hard to catch, but it is there- and they just "edited" the tape. They did not actually change what she said. Watch her lips as she goes through :56.
Watch it with sound and then without.
Then watch as something funny happens just before. They cut away and couric looks majorly pissed but nothing Palin said seems controversial. and nobody's lips seem to match.
Before you posted this I had not realized just how manipulated that interview was; I figured this was just the normal bs, but this carries shenanigans to a whole new level.

I really can't say how annoyed I get at this whole "copyright blocking" bit is getting. It's funny, but I remember when broadband was the hot-shit thing, every station, and news channel, information source, or broadcaster in existence was putting their content online to get exposure. Now they don't want to, or they're slapping copyright laws.

Stupid stupid stupid. Even the thought of having to use a proxy annoys me to no end. Now that I'm done my rant...

Happy 4th.

Well, interviews on TV are edited, period. And cutaways of the interviewer are put in to cover the "jump cut." Nothing nefarious, that I can see. And this little tiny file is a copy of a copy of a copy. I just don't see a conspiracy here to make Palin look bad.

BUT, you have been a worthy opponent throughout the evening, and I salute you. I shall now head over to the next thread to argue about something less divisive, like religion. :) Hope to see you online again.

re: #349 ShanghaiEd

Interesting point. I gave up listening to politician's speeches years ago, and instead wait for a transcript to become available so I can read it divorced from the speaker's delivery. Bush II, for example, is a terrible public speaker, but what he has to say is often extremely well put together and makes for an excellent, sometimes inspiring read. 0, on the other hand, delivers speeches extremely well, but they are speeches full of shallow platitudes and lacking any specifics when it comes to actual programs or their details. Reagan was able to deliver on both counts, a rarity.
