Armstrong a Fraction of a Second Away from Tour De France Lead

Sports • Views: 2,561

Velonews has a good account of today’s team time trial at the Tour de France, in which Lance Armstrong and his Astana team won the stage and came within a fraction of a second of taking the yellow jersey. If anyone still doubted Lance could make a comeback, he ended all the speculation today.

Team Astana blazed through the team time trial to win stage 4. Astana came across the line 40 seconds ahead of the Saxo Bank squad of race leader Fabian Cancellara — the exact margin by which Cancellara led Lance Armstrong on general classification. After some careful math by race officials, Cancellara now holds the yellow jersey by a fraction of a second over Armstrong.

Garmin-Slipstream finished second on the day, 18 seconds down.

Astana came into the stage with four riders in the top 10 thanks to their time trialing ability, and that strength showed again on the 39km stage around Montpellier. Held largely on narrow roads, the technical course featured more than a few dicey corners that put riders from several teams on the ground.

I think it would be really cool to travel along with the Tour, watch it being run every day. That would be a neat way to see France.

Lance looks great in yellow .... tomorrow maybe he can model a nice shiny, new yellow jersey.

8 General Nimrod Bodfish  Tue, Jul 7, 2009 2:20:19pm

Lance could wait until they are half way done with the Tour to start, and he could still win it LOL

This man is an inspiration all everyone. Coming back from testicular cancer to win 7 Tour de France titles, and now coming back from a crash that broke his collarbone several weeks back and is now just out of the lead, it's just incredible to me.

Go Lance!

10 A Man for all Seasons  Tue, Jul 7, 2009 2:21:14pm

OK... I'm stunned....If Lance wins this tour he has to be in the discussion for greatest athlete in History.. A 37 year old man cannot do this..

I don't care what anyone says - Lance has some stones in his sack.

12 MrSilverDragon  Tue, Jul 7, 2009 2:21:29pm

Lance has more spirit in his fingernail than most people have in their entire bodies. Keep it up, Lance!

13 Charles Johnson  Tue, Jul 7, 2009 2:23:16pm

There was serious carnage on this stage - several crashes. The route had lots of unusually narrow roads.

14 turn  Tue, Jul 7, 2009 2:23:23pm

This guy is the come back kid alright, overcoming cancer then coming back and continuing to nap the yellow Jersey. I have no doubt his top physical condition is why that chemo was able to work so well. Man those fwench are going to be really pissed off if our team wins again. Lance must have lungs down to his knees, unfreakinbelievable. Go Lance! Later all, time to go walk the lab along the American

He's toying with the French at this stage.

Reminds me of the two cheetahs in the Richard Pryor classic comedy act.

"Two cheetahs are lazing in the hot sun. One looks up sleepily at some gazelles in the far distance. 'Yawwwwn. Are you hungry?' 'Oh, I don't know. Maybe a snack. Or maybe let's go back to sleep.' ... 'Well, OK, let's have a snack.' They get up slowly, strettttccchhhh...then--

FOOOOOOOM!

One dead gazelle."

That's Lance vs. the European riders.

If Lance wins, there should be NO discussion on this, IMO. Seven Tour de France titles, working on a possible 8th. 37 years old, survived cancer, there should be no doubt he has to be the greatest athlete in recorded history. He's certainly the best in his generation.

20 pingjockey  Tue, Jul 7, 2009 2:26:11pm

Out here in the boonies, the big city, Wenatchee, WA. has a kid on Lances' team. Tyler Farrar. So eastern Wa is all wound up about this. I hope he pulls it off and drives the French mad!

Alberto Contador doesn't stand a chance. Supposedly Contador was going to be the team leader for Astana, and he and Lance would do whatever Johan Bruyneel (the team manager) said. But Lance has made Johan a very rich man, I'm sure, and can continue to do so even after he re-retires, so I think Johan will do whatever Lance wants.

There is a historic opportunity being missed here because of our choice last November. For good or ill, President Bush planted a seed of democracy in the viper's nest that is the Middle East. I have no doubt that the expressions of rebellion and freedom being seen in Iran were fueled by seeing what their neighbors in Iraq had attained. All Obama had to due was nurture and encourage it, in the same way Reagan nurtured and encouraged Soildarity in Poland, and let the people do the heavy lifting. Nobody meant for him to send in the 82nd Airborne for crying out loud. Just use the moral authority of the United States to provide moral strength. But he did not do that and dithered and hesitated and probably squandered one of the best opportunities for real Fundamental Change - the kind of change that's really needed - not the bukllshit he is pulling on this country. History will be the judge but I am willing to judge him now for the supporter of tyrants that he really is.
And his actions in Honduras are in stark contrast to what he failed to do in Iran. As I've often stated before, liberals have phenomenally bad judgement and can be relied on to do exactly the wrong thing, each and every fucking time.

Putin praises Bush hospitality during Obama visit

Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin praised the hospitality and openness of U.S. former President George W. Bush in a telegramme sent hours before meeting his successor Barack Obama.

"During the last years we have been working on strengthening Russia-U.S. cooperation. Although there were differences between our countries, I always valued your openness and sincerity," Putin said, congratulating Bush on his 63rd birthday on July 6.

Let me give you some info. The Hammond-Suzuki XK-3 digital organ is considered by all experts as the only true Hammond clone, a digital instrument that finally duplicates the sound produced by the older partly mechanical B3. Over 30 years of digital clones have never reached the sound like the XK-3.

As far as Leslie speakers, no one has flawlessly duplicated that sound. The Kettner-Hughes RotoVibe comes as close as anyone has been able to create, and that is a 500 dollar pedal.

Contractor With Ties To Murtha Charged By Feds

Richard Ianieri, the former president of Coherent Systems International, is accused of taking bribes from officials at a firm the company hired as a contractor. The charges, filed late Monday by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Pittsburgh, came in the form of a filing that typically indicates that the defendant plans to plead guilty and cooperate with investigators.

"The company that allegedly paid the bribes, identified in court filings only as "K," closely resembles Kuchera Defense Systems, which is based in Murtha's congressional district outside Pittsburgh and was a subcontractor to Coherent. Kuchera Defense Systems and its sister company, Kuchera Industries, are under federal investigation for allegations of fraud and overbilling on Defense Department contracts. The probe focuses on companies that benefited from contracts orchestrated or approved by Murtha, the powerful chair of the House Appropriations subcommittee on military spending.

"Defense investigators and the FBI raided Kuchera's corporate offices and the homes of its top two executives January. In late April, the Navy suspended Kuchera for 'alleged fraud,' including 'multiple incidents' of incorrect charging, Navy officials said, along with allegations of defective pricing and ethical violations."

The Summit: Day 2

Having committed himself to a useless arms-reduction treaty and vouchsafed his faith in the Russian legal system, the president has gone on to:

* Acknowledge the “extraordinary work” that prime minister Vladimir Putin has done for Russia, describing him as “sincere, just, and deeply interested in the interests of the Russian people,”

* Promised to take into account Russia’s “peculiar” view of its relations with Georgia and Ukraine [that it should dominate them], and

*Vowed to keep the Russian leaders informed about a U.S. evaluation of whether the anti-missile shield planned for Eastern Europe will actually work. (This was immediately described by Kremlin spokesmen for the Russian television audience as a prelude to an American decision to drop the missile shield entirely.)

I hope Murtha's on his knees, puking in terror after reading this.

The Feds certainly are busy these days, between this and cleaning out the cesspool in Detroit.

Murtha's too dumb and arrogant to know there's a shitstorm coming his way. If he's implicated in this, I will be serving up a steamin', heapin' helpin' of Schadenfreude to any and all.

Hello everyone.

Just thought I'd stop in after a very busy day and ask for some information.

I know that LGF has quite a few folks who enjoy hunting and the outdoors.

I have been kissing a bear's ass all day and I need to know how to get the hair out of my teeth. Any tips? Thanks in advance.

I've figured out why Al Gore has likened fighting global warming to fighting Nazis.

What with the atmosphere, the entire earth is a gas chamber. How could I not have seen it?

No smoke here. It will remain confidential until the deal is done, then I can post pics to assuage your doubt, but not prior, unless it becomes public by other means before the dinner. Due to my info, I believe Roger Stone is probably correct, that's all I am saying. No intent to tease or blow smoke.

Agreed. As soon as I know the dinner deal is released for the public, I'll post it.
Until then, I suggest you bookmark Roger Stone's article, it may be a road map to the future, but even Palin says today that no one knows that, as yet.

However, except for Cheney, she will be in the best position to score tags on Obama repeatedly regarding his policies - as unemployment rises, the stimulus falters, the economy tanks, inflation looms, and more than that 23% of her following grows more and more anxious over the present and the future.

Yes Virginia, we are living in very interesting times!

re: #90 SteveC

How in the hell do we take Zelaya's side in this? Honduras has a democratically elected government; he said "I've got a great idea! Why don't I become President for life?" and the people (backed by the army) told him "That's the stupidest idea we've ever heard of!"

So how exactly do we back the wannabe dictator on this one?

In fact when President Zelaya proposed the reform extending his term, he caused Article 239 of the Constitution of Honduras, to take effect. The Supreme Court and the attorney general were following the rule of law and the Constitution of Honduras. Obama knows this, and lies when he says the removal was illegal.

Article 239 — No citizen that has already served as head of the Executive Branch can be President or Vice-President.

Whoever violates this law or proposes its reform, as well as those that support such violation directly or indirectly, will immediately cease in their functions and will be unable to hold any public office for a period of 10 years.

re: #13 Charles

There was serious carnage on this stage - several crashes. The route had lots of unusually narrow roads.

Was the most unique time trial I have ever seen for sure. Not the usual fluidity because of the many turns. It was great to see a hill so quickly into the stage as well.

Any Bruyneel team is seemingly made for TTTs. Pretty ironic that the ISO didn't limit the time losses on the stage as they did in '03 because they weren't as a worried about Lance.

Maybe they should have been!
