Water is free? I don't think so. People pay water bills, your taxes help pay for services, and in Europe, municipal water is much more expensive than here in the states.

How can you say it's free?

Water from a tap isn't free, but if that's all the water you used, I would expect your water bill would be very very low. whereas bottled water costs more for a gallon than a gallon of gasoline.

United Breaks Guitars

In the spring of 2008, Sons of Maxwell were traveling to Nebraska for a one-week tour and my Taylor guitar was witnessed being thrown by United Airlines baggage handlers in Chicago. I discovered later that the $3500 guitar was severely damaged. They didnt deny the experience occurred but for nine months the various people I communicated with put the responsibility for dealing with the damage on everyone other than themselves and finally said they would do nothing to compensate me for my loss. So I promised the last person to finally say no to compensation (Ms. Irlweg) that I would write and produce three songs about my experience with United Airlines and make videos for each to be viewed online by anyone in the world.

I remember when they used to let you carry on guitars. One of the last times I got away with it I made it all the way to the gate. I handed the lady my boarding pass and she handed me the stub before she noticed my guitar. I made it 2-3 steps past her and she said, "Excuse me, you're going to have to check that." I just kept on walking and said "It's ok. I'm a musician."
I was very lucky to get away with it and never tried again. When I travel now with my cellos I buy an extra seat.

You're probably right. But the press is fickle; they're unable to sustain continuous, non-stop coverage of a single story for more than a few days if it's something of real importance, or a few months if it involves celebrities.

But the potential for never-ending updates and revisits is certainly there.

Now that Michael Jackson has had his memorial, how many more days will it be before the networks start covering news again?

I told my wife I thought it would die down for roughly 3 weeks.
That's the amount of time before his brain comes back and is analyzed.

Like minded people (especially the press) will then revive the issue.

Having something be French makes that thing more appealing, I think.

For example: A number of weeks ago, a friend of mine and I were having a few drinks at my place, when he convinced me to open up a bottle of a 2000 Bordeaux I'd been saving for years. Well- turns out it was a good thing we opened the bottle, because the cork had started to bleed, but hadn't hurt the wine yet. It was perfect- and delicious.

So we're enjoying some wine, playing some tunes, when I move to suddenly, and knock over my wine glass, breaking it, and getting wine all over my desk. I quickly tried to clean it all up, and thankfully none got on the computer, but it was quite a scene for a few minutes. I looked over at my friend when I sat back down and he said, "at least you trashed your desk on a fine Bordeaux."

Good evening.

The market lost about 2% today, and the Dow is now down 1.5% since the new President took office.

Oil has dropped to $62 and change. I want to give credit where credit is due. The drop in oil is due mainly to President Obama and the Democrats in control in Congress. The market is becoming convinced that with them in charge the prospects for a recovery are very remote in the foreseeable future, so demand for oil will be low, thus the sell off.

I get the feeling now that a lot of shippers and receivers are cutting WAY back as they think that things are going to get worse. It is a vicious cycle. When freight volume drops off the freight rates hit the crapper, thus putting people out of business.

The Messiah says that they did not misread the economy:

Obama: Administration Did Not Misread Economic Downturn

Contrary to comments made this past weekend by Vice President Joe Biden, President Barack Obama says that the administration did not misread the economic downturn.
“We haven't always gotten the numbers right, but I think the general overview is right,” Obama told NBC News Tuesday. “We went through an economic tsunami that was far worse than anything we have gone through since the Great Depression, and even early on I think we did not see the full magnitude of what was going to happen."

Earth to Obama - Getting the numbers wrong means you misread the economy. Not seeing the full magnitude as you say, is also misreading the economy.

So when is he going to blame Bush again? Right, here:

“[My administration] came in [on] January 20th. It was only after the first-quarter numbers came in, if you recall, that suddenly everybody looked and said the economy shrank six percent so it was happening much more rapidly at an accelerated pace than the projections out there at the time” he said.

Um... President Obama? The market was dropping 700 points a day in October and November, and you needed 1st quarter numbers to know that the economy was contracting quickly?

How dumb do these people think we are?

re: #317 buzzsawmonkey

BTW, Duke Ellington used to tour with his band all over the country--and, of course, in the days of Jim Crow laws it was not always easy to find accommodations.

Ellington's solution was to commission a private railroad car for his band. The band lived in the car whether traveling or whether they were playing in a town, when it was parked on a siding.

Private cars, in the 1930s and 1940s, were the hallmark of the rich and successful. Ellington thus provided an example of "when life hands you lemons, make lemonade"; he solved the problem of accommodations for his band, avoided the problem of local Jim Crow laws, and added to the grandeur and luster of his band with his solution.

I would add that Ellington and his contemporaries, despite having to deal with restrictions of this sort in their everyday lives, managed to produce some of the most joyous music ever made. When I hear people like Sharpton--who have lived virtually their entire lives free from such restrictions--yammering about how oppressive America is, or hear the ugly, misogynistic noise which passes for music for certain performers, I cannot but contrast these feeble complaints with the achievements of people who had to face genuine oppression, and yet managed to project grace and joy.

nicely said Buzz. God bless Duke. May his memory live forever.

And, on the reproductive health front:

Anti-Abortion Activists Push New,
More Radical Egg-As-Person Measures

A resurgent movement to place "personhood" measures on state ballots across the nation to ban abortion and comprehensive reproductive care could have far more sweeping implications than the trial balloon Colorado voters soundly defeated last year.

I sat not 5ft away from him at his piano when he played Mr. T-Bones in Kalamazoo MI one night about 70 or 71...he had his cut down band with him and my dad, being a close friend of the club owners had some influence getting this young man and his squeeze into the sold out show...I was deep into his groove and he spoke a few words here and there to me, just over his shoulder...Ellington was a marvelous showman...he had very interesting facial features and the coolest wavy silver hair ever...I got to watch him unloosen after the show when the patrons had left...it was a very cool experience

re: #358 Iron Fist

It is funny, but modern black Americans (people my age, who have never had to deal with seggregation or Jim Crow) have more of a feeling of greivance against America than many freed slaves after the Civil War. They are more bitter about seggregation than the leaders of the Civil Rights movement of the earlier part of the century, even though they never were denied service at a lunch counter or had to sit at the back of a bus. When you look at blacks in popular culture, you quickly see a dive toward the bottom. There are very few Bill Cosbys out there to combat the many Snoop Doggs and Michael Vicks.

The First Lady herself summed up what you say when she said that for the first time in her life she was proud of her country. And this after a Harvard education and a $300K job for doing nothing, among other things. That says it all.

Couldn't have been, or the agency that "protects children" would have taken custody of all the kids because they aren't wearing helmets, knee pads, and all the other protective gear that would have kept them save by preventing them from getting up on the skates in the first place.

re: #422 buzzsawmonkey

To which I would add that I have met many non- or areligious Jews who are more terrified of religious oppression by Christians--theocracy, prayer in schools, Christmas pageants--than they have any right to be.

My parents grew up in the days when hotels were restricted ("We have no Hebrew patronage"), academic quotas were in full force, private industry would not hire Jews, restrictive covenants forbade selling houses to Jews in certain areas, etc.

The vestiges of this remained when I was a kid; the local political power was concentrated at a restricted club that did not allow Jews to become full members, though they had one or two Jews as "provisional" members as windowdressing. We did not have prayers in the public schools, but the Christmas pageant was still a Christmas pageant, even if a chorus or two of "Dreidel, dreidel" was thrown in as a sop to ecumenism.

Somehow, we survived. And, frankly, I don't think the school manifestations were so bad; it reminded us who we were, and kept the parents on their toes, since they needed to make sure that we learned a little about Judaism.

The vestigial religious manifestations have been expunged from the schools now. The Jewish parents, in my old hometown, told the synagogue to cut back on the Hebrew school because otherwise the kiddies might miss soccer practice; odd, but we managed the larger obligation when I was a kid and still managed the extracurriculars.

In the meantime, the parents are terrified that the kids they have given no grounding to might somehow become seduced by a Christmas tree, and are all the more vehement about expunging such things wherever they rear themselves. There is a cycle going on where parental abdication of responsibility towards their children causes the parents to cleave more and more to a polarizing fear of the other.

My daughter once said to me, "I feel so bad for the goyim. We have holidays all year round, and all they have is Christmas."

i'm just curious why all these people who knew and loved michael jackson so much couldn't see how completely out of control he was at the end and did nothing to help him. did any of these close personal acquaintances notice that he weighed 112 lbs. and was living on pills?
who was w/ him at the end but strangers and hired help.
look how they crawl out of the wood work to cry and worship him now.
this spectacle is really pathetic.

and why would the family let that fcking asshole sharpton speak at the funeral.
he is such a disgusting person, he has done nothing for civil rights. he is a race monger for his own gain. he has done nothing for african americans. he creates discord. and makes money from causing trouble. "shake down sharpton"

For those "close personal acquaintances" and the strangers and hired help - Jackson was their meal ticket, their ride to a very comfortable lifestyle.
Whatever kept him happy, kept them in his employ, and so they kept him "happy". This includes that doctor that was with him at the end.

For those closer to him - family and close friends - I will say this: For an adult person with personal demons and addictions - there are limited options as to what family and friends can do. I know this from personal experience. I have a drug-addict brother, who also has mental problems, is delusional and lives in fear of "people" who are out to get him, who are spying on him and who want to kill him. Because he is an adult, we could not have him committed, unless he became dangerous to himself and/or others and we brought him to an emergency room. Even then, he could be kept against his wishes for 72 hours only. His delusions are very real to him, he believes them sincerely, and believes we have become part of the plot to "get" him.

Michael Freund (Israelnationalnews.com) While much of the world mourns the untimely death of the "King of Pop" Michael Jackson, it is worth recalling one of Mr. Jackson's more unfortunate qualities: he was an anti-Semite.

In case you think I am making this up, allow me to refresh your memory.

Back in November 2005, Jackson was caught on tape in a voicemail to one of his former business managers calling Jews "leeches". The tapes were played on ABC's Good Morning America program, and Jackson was heard saying, "They suck…they're like leeches. It's a conspiracy. The Jews do it on purpose."

And in 1995, Jackson provoked a firestorm of protest when he released an album called HIStory containing a song entitled "They don't care about us" which had the following lyrics: "Jew me, sue me" and "Kick me, kike me". He subsequently promised to re-record the song and delete the offending lyrics.

But then, in February 1996, Jackson nonetheless released a video of the song in which he had re-instated the brazenly anti-Semitic remarks.

So before you go shedding a tear in Michael Jackson's memory, take a moment and consider the hate that he spewed against Jews, both in private and in public.

And then maybe you'll consider saving those tears for someone far more deserving.

Well - of course there are "holidays" and special observances throughout the year - but only a few that are especially celebrated, with extended seasons - Easter and Christmas come to mind (and of course, in South Louisiana - Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent begins).

A former co-worker is Jewish, and the Director of his office. And of course, he worked in an office with a bunch of Christians, who wanted a Christmas tree during Christmas season. I'm sure this wasn't quite "kosher", but his office did put up a "holiday" tree, with one half decorated with traditional Christmas decorations, the other half decorated with Jewish symbols.
Everybody was happy.

re: #486 Jimmah

I can understand it if the water in your locale is really horrible, but for most people I would think, yeah - it's a bit of a con. The tap water where I am is very soft and tastes great, so no need to buy it. Some people here still do though.

We bought a Brita pitcher. It has a charcoal filter. You fill the upper chamber with water and it trickles through the filter into the main part of the pitcher. The filters last anywhere from 30 to 90 days, depending on your usage, and cost $3-4 apiece. The water is as tasty as anything you can buy.

Reine,

A recipe for the cookbook.

ROFL!
I did not expect that!
What's really funny - I have a cat that will do that very thing, curl up in any empty container that he'll fit into. Idiot cat.

You can either make a joke or be a joke. Those are the only two options...

Here ya go: John McWhorter. As I said, I'm a fan of his work as a linguist, and I haven't read his books on race, but I have read his columns and articles which often touch on racial issues. He's somewhat conservative but he can't help himself from being an Obama fanboy. Other than that, he's got some very interesting insights.

No, I'm not an MJ fan either.
But I do know that it is virtually impossible for a family to actually do something when a person is determined not to be helped. As MJ probably was, a situation aggravated, I'm sure, by all the hangers-on he employed.

They are pond scum.
Hug him while taking his wallet.
When it's all gone, they move on.
No Big Deal.
Like a Virus.

Could've helped him.
Didn't.

Ah, ok. The waitress at my local greasy spoon diner mistakenly delivered it to my table while I was having a Denver omelet with hash browns. I'm eternally grateful for her mistake.

Well, at least this ad is preferable to the Coke Zero ads...those disembodied anatomy ones...featuring the tongues, the eyeball, and the brain...(the "eyeball" speaks with a French accent, whereas the tongues speak with a Cockney British accent...)

 Frank says:

The gorilla is on an island, eats bananas and has a good time all day long. He plays out there in the bushes. Some Americans find out about the gorilla and they hear how BIG he is - you know. They're very impressed with the size of the beast. So they catch the gorilla & they stick him in a boat & bring him back to the US. They show him off to everybody & make a bunch of money. ...Then they kill him ! -- The song King Kong.1968 tour Wisconsin.
