True, but it appears that the great unwashed masses are stirring and they ain't happy - given the makeup of those masses, that complacent Congress will listen if in danger of loosing an election. Hey I have HOPE that we can all effect CHANGE - I'm sick of the socialization of America.

Some serious point counterpoint going on in Iran.

Huffington Post

"Today they sounded very different..." Via reader Allie, Tehran Bureau has accounts from all over the city. Here's one: "All the friends I spoke to today have been relatively depressed for the past few days. But today they sounded very different. They said while the security forces were trying their best to separate the demonstrators, the city overall was alive and filled with peaceful protests. Their voice sounded excited, and much more confident and determined than in recent days."

from the NIAC:

EU putting entry visas for Iranian diplomats on hold – The Financial Times of Germany (German) reported today that none of the 27 members of the EU will approve entry visas for Iranian Diplomats. High-ranking diplomats from the Member States have agreed to extend the review time for processing visa applications by holders of diplomatic and service passports, according to a letter from Sweden. These countries are not allowed to make decisions on visa applications until further notice.

And Sullivan does a fantastic job of pulling various sources together.

Does anyone else know other good sources for the Iranian Protests/Revolution?

[Link: news.yahoo.com...]

Pelosi shuts down resolution on Michael Jackson
[Link: news.yahoo.com...]

By my calculations, hell is now freezing over!

She did it for political reasons.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shut the door Thursday to a resolution honoring Michael Jackson because debate on the symbolic measure could raise "contrary views" about the pop star's life.

Lawmakers are free to use House speeches "to express their sympathy or their praise any time that they wish," said Pelosi, D-Calif. "I don't think it's necessary for us to have a resolution."

A resolution sponsored by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, cites some of the singer's charitable acts and proclaims him an American legend, musical icon and world humanitarian.

Even before Pelosi's comments, some Democrats said privately they did not support the resolution and a divisive debate would hurt House efforts to muster the votes for priorities such as health care and climate change.

Billions in aid go to areas that backed Obama in '08
By Brad Heath, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — Billions of dollars in federal aid delivered directly to the local level to help revive the economy have gone overwhelmingly to places that supported President Obama in last year's presidential election.

That aid — about $17 billion — is the first piece of the administration's massive stimulus package that can be tracked locally. Much of it has followed a well-worn path to places that regularly collect a bigger share of federal grants and contracts, guided by formulas that have been in place for decades and leave little room for manipulation.

"There's no politics at work when it comes to spending for the recovery," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs says.

Counties that supported Obama last year have reaped twice as much money per person from the administration's $787 billion economic stimulus package as those that voted for his Republican rival, Sen. John McCain, a USA TODAY analysis of government disclosure and accounting records shows. That money includes aid to repair military bases, improve public housing and help students pay for college.

My BQ grill is cooking Buffalo wings as we speak. Next to them are a few dozen rib eyes (the ones with the good marbling). Next to them are same-day-caught shrimp about to be doused with fresh lemon juice.

In the bin under the grill are many foil wrapped Idaho potatoes just about ready for sour cream, chives, bacon bits and lots of butter. Kosher salt in a bowl nearby, to be added to taste. Pepper too.

In the outdoor cooler are various brands of beer. Bass, Heineken, Miller, just to name a few. The vodka has been chilling in the freezer. To be applied to any drink desired. Fruit juices and ice abound. Hennessey, well that comes after dessert.

Desserts. Refreshing strawberry shortcake. Sixteen flavors of ice cream. Ki lime and apple pie. Oh ya, seven flavors of Eli's cheese cake.

Hand politicians basically a blank check, tell them to spend it as quickly as possible, and people wonder why stimulus funds are not going where intended?

Report: States aren't using stimulus funds as intended
By Matt Kelley, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — Under pressure to spend stimulus money quickly, many states are using the federal funds for short-term projects and to fill budget gaps rather than spending on long-term improvements, according to a report by congressional investigators.

The report, scheduled to be released Tuesday by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) at a House oversight hearing, also says many states aren't meeting some goals and requirements of the economic recovery program. Some states, for example, are not sending transportation funding to the most economically distressed areas, and they are using education funds to prevent layoffs rather than fund innovative new programs, the report says.

This is what I have been pointing out for months. Most of the money is going to existing contracts, to the same people who have been getting federal money all the long, whether it was Democratic money or Republican money (really, our money).

It's really not going to NEW jobs, it's simply supporting all the people that have always been heavily in debt to federal funds.

This is the answer folks, if you are looking for NEW jobs, you won't find them, all the old cronies are getting most of the money.

Any NEW jobs are small demonstration projects used for public relations and media consumption.

Can't fight H1N1... we're broke!

NHS hospitals could be forced to slash services because the Treasury is refusing to fund the costs of the swine flu pandemic, officials warned tonight.

The damaging internal wrangle could lead to thousands of operations being delayed or cancelled, wards being shut or nurses losing their jobs.

The Department of Health has spent at least £2billion on preparations for a mass swine flu outbreak on British soil.

Huge orders have been placed for 90 million doses of vaccine, enough flu-busting drugs such as Tamiflu for 80 per cent of the population, and millions of facemasks for doctors and nurses.

Officials were counting on the Treasury to pay for these emergency costs out of a crisis budget.

But, with public services squeezed as a result of the recession, the Daily Mail has learned that Chancellor Alistair Darling's department has told health secretary Andy Burnham that there is no spare cash.

They say the £2 billion will have to be found from existing health budgets.

It means hospitals could have to make huge savings, such as rationing operations and drugs, and reducing the number of nurses and midwives they employ.

The Dems in 2006 campaigned on a promise to end pork barreling, so why haven't they stopped doing it in 2009?

In health bill, billions for parks, paths
Supporters cite prevention, but add-ons’ critics see pork

By Michael Kranish
Globe Staff / July 9, 2009

WASHINGTON - Sweeping healthcare legislation working its way through Congress is more than an effort to provide insurance to millions of Americans without coverage. Tucked within is a provision that could provide billions of dollars for walking paths, streetlights, jungle gyms, and even farmers’ markets.

The add-ons - characterized as part of a broad effort to improve the nation’s health “infrastructure’’ - appear in House and Senate versions of the bill.

Critics argue the provision is a thinly disguised effort to insert pork-barrel spending into a bill that has been widely portrayed to the public as dealing with expanding health coverage and cutting medical costs. A leading critic, Senator Mike Enzi, a Wyoming Republican, ridicules the local projects, asking: “How can Democrats justify the wasteful spending in this bill?’’

USDA to oversee school snack food: Senate ag chair
Tue Jul 7, 2009 2:30pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Agriculture Department would be given the power to regulate all food sold in schools -- including vending machine snacks -- when Congress renews child nutrition programs, the chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee said on Tuesday.

Chairman Tom Harkin said he hopes the committee will start work on legislation to reauthorize school lunch programs in October or November, with a goal to conclude the work by the end of the year.

"I can tell you it won't be this month," Harkin told reporters who asked when work would begin. He said precedence must go, for now, to his work on health care reform and on drafting the annual federal spending bills.

Agriculture Committee work on child nutrition will begin with a draft that gives the USDA the authority to oversee all food in schools, so nutrition programs are not "undermined" by junk food in vending machines, Harkin said at a confirmation hearing for the head of the USDA's nutrition programs.

Land Whale Kennedy's remarks really show the hypocrisy:

But advocates, including Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, defend the proposed spending as a necessary way to promote healthier lives and, in the long run, cut medical costs. “These are not public works grants; they are community transformation grants,’’ said Anthony Coley, a spokesman for Kennedy, chairman of the Senate health committee whose healthcare bill includes the projects.

Obama Can't Be Trusted With Numbers
So why should we trust him with health care?

By KARL ROVE

In February, President Barack Obama signed a $787 billion stimulus bill while making lavish promises about the results. He pledged that "a new wave of innovation, activity and construction will be unleashed all across America." He also said the stimulus would "save or create up to four million jobs." Vice President Joe Biden said the massive federal spending plan would "drop-kick" the economy out of the recession.

But the unemployment rate today is 9.5% -- nearly 20% higher than the Obama White House said it would be with the stimulus in place. Keith Hennessey, who worked at the Bush White House on economic policy, has noted that unemployment is now higher than the administration said it would be if nothing was done to revive the economy. There are 2.6 million fewer Americans working than Mr. Obama promised...

For USA Today to actually be reporting on this blatant political patronage scam is mind-boggling.

Billions in aid go to areas that backed Obama in '08
By Brad Heath, USA TODAY

Probably not patronage, and more a result of more money flowing to urban areas than otherwise. As the article states,

Much of it has followed a well-worn path to places that regularly collect a bigger share of federal grants and contracts, guided by formulas that have been in place for decades and leave little room for manipulation.

It might be worth deeper analysis, but I don't think there's any quid pro quo here.

A more important observation is: one reason that only a tiny fraction of the stimulus bill has actually reached the economy - well under 10% of what was allocated six months ago - is that the money is being distributed in the most inefficient manner possible - through endless layers of Federal bureaucracy into another maze of state agencies and from there through a warren of smaller municipal authorities where finally a dollop of it falls into the hands of consumers. Rather than simply cutting withholding taxes and returning a significant lump of cash into employee's hands with every paycheck, a move that would take no more than a couple of weeks to implement. "Targeted" stimulus, though not likely distributed as political patronage payments, is being used to promote a distinct political agenda, rather than doing what it was supposed to do: stimulate the economy.

Yep, that's him.

From Wiki:

Vietnam combat missions controversy

While running for his Senate seat in 1984, and again while running for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1992, Harkin has faced criticism for claiming that he had flown combat missions over North Vietnam. In a 1979 round table discussion with other Congressional military veterans, Harkin said of his service as a Navy pilot: "One year was in Vietnam. I was flying F-4s and F-8s on combat air patrols and photo-reconnaissance support missions". These comments were later published in a 1981 book by David Broder. After subsequent inquiries by Barry Goldwater and The Wall Street Journal, Harkin clarified that that he had been stationed in Japan and sometimes flew recently repaired aircraft on test missions over Vietnam. His service flying F-4s and F-8s was later, while he was stationed in Cuba.

Fuck.

To be fair, so far it's Congress' assault on the Treasury. It won't be Obama's assault until he signs their bill.

In recent years, this sort of porking and earmarking has become business as usual in Congress, with every single bill that passes through the chamber larded to the point where you could use it as the target in a greased pig contest. It isn't unique to the Obama Administration.

And earmarking can be stopped in a heartbeat. Earmarks are riders attached to, but not legally part of, actual bills. There has been a gentleman's agreement between Congress and the Executive branch for decades that these formerly small tokens tossed back to the constituents at home would be passed along with the bill when it was signed, despite not being written into it. This not only makes transparency impossible to maintain - it is nearly impossible to determine who is responsible for inserting earmarks into a bill after the fact - but has grown into a massive abuse of Congressional power.

And all that's needed to stop it is a President willing to yank those riders off the bill, toss them in the wastebasket and sign the bill itself, only approving what it actually contains and ending this nonsense once and for all. There is nothing Congress could do about it, other than go back to the old practice of actually including pork in the bill itself, and exposing themselves as the authors.

But so far, no President has seen fit to end this odious practice. Not Clinton - under whose Administration it grew enormously - not Bush, and certainly not Obama, although he paid lip service to ending earmarking during the campaign. Instead, with the Democrats in complete control of both Congress and the White House, look for earmarking and similar dodges to grow by orders of magnitude and be abused ever more blatantly than they have in the past.

Looks like Texas is the winner: $5,139,542,000.
Ron Paul!

Try again.

California is first at 7,854,800,000.

Agreed. NIAC is great though also.

Thanks, I hadn't heard of NIAC.

As I said in that thread, I have concerns about the Islamic Society of North America. I have absolutely no problem with immigrants, from the Mideast or elsewhere, who make gestures like this. Good to have you among us, Iranian-Americans.

I am near NYC and it is 57F outside! Its July and I cannot go outside without a jacket on. It was 61F at noon today. I am sure the global warming alarmist are dreaming up ways that this somehow supports their theory, but for the sensible person having a temperature averaging 20 degrees below normal is definitely an attention getter. Did the CO2 level mysteriously drop?
