Tour De France Heads Upward

Sports • Views: 3,604

Today’s stage of the Tour de France started in Barcelona on a beautiful route that finished with one of the first real climbs, and this is where the eventual leaders started to take charge. Fabian Cancellara couldn’t hang with the climbers, and lost the yellow jersey: Feillu wins stage 7, Nocentini grabs yellow and Contador asserts supremacy.

We may be in for an epic battle between Astana team members Alberto Contador and Lance Armstrong. Contador attacked in the final climb today, gaining 20 seconds on Armstrong; after the race, Armstrong said that wasn’t the plan, but he wasn’t surprised.

UPDATE at 7/10/09 1:42:57 pm:

Here’s today’s official TdF video of the stage:

I’ve enjoyed Versus’s coverage of the Tour this year. They’re doing a good job.

There are too many riders in the Tour De France. They cause too many accidents. Population control is obviously needed. Mass sterilization might work. /

I have to be honest here, I’ve never followed the tour much but I’ve literally been glued to the TV the last three nights watching this on a cable channel. I had absolutely no idea of how important strategy is in a bike race. Previously I had just chalked winning up to brute force and awkwardness, man was I naive. Go US.

This is a long race and there will be more mountains for Lance and Alberto to climb, maybe just the two of them. We will see. It is amazing to see Lance at this level at 37 and coming back.

17 _RememberTonyC  Fri, Jul 10, 2009 1:32:32pm

I’m told by someone who knows a lot about cycling that Lance (sadly) showed today why he won’t be able to win the Tour. In the last 1.5 mile climb, Lance faded and Contador put the hammer down. And as Charles said a day or two ago, while Lance has traditionally kicked butt in the mountain stages, the younger guys are going to be better climbers. Contador is 24 years old and he will do really well. Lance will need to dig deeper than anyone has ever had to dig. Not impossible, but will probably take a once in a lifetime effort from Lance.

18 jcm  Fri, Jul 10, 2009 1:33:04pm

I cannot believe how irrelevant to current issue LFG has become. A bicycle thread when serious issue loom large? We have a lecherous leftist leader of the the free world leering at Brazilian babe’s butts and you guys are discussing bicycles?

LFG used to be where I came for current and vital world wide issues!

Maybe so, but remember - Armstrong is a really smart rider. It’s still early. Contador hasn’t gained much - nothing that can’t be overcome yet. Lance could be biding his time.

This year, the final stage before the Champs Elysee finish is Mont Ventoux — a major climb, so steep it’s classified as “beyond category.” With that arrangement, this could go all the way down to the wire.

Charles ….. never underestimate the heart of a champion. Legends have a way of doing legendary things. No cyclist in the world will ever be better than Lance when it comes to “head games.” This has the potential for a race for the ages. You have to be there to enjoy the race… It is so loud you have to wear earplugs and they go so fast it blows your mind…
Not so much on TV…The first time I went there after watching on the tube since i was a kid.. I was blown away…

I’ve been several times and unless you’re high in the first turn or across from the pits (my second choice), it’s hard to tell what’s going on. Even then a radio helps to keep up once the leaders lap those at the back of the pack. But it’s a great experience…..the kids go every year.

What’s wrong with a velcro wallet. I have one. Only non-leathers I can find are velcro.

Was worth checking out, if you ask me. Then I heard the age (*shudder*)

Tell me about it. My son is turning 15 in two weeks. He’s a year advanced in school, so all his freinds, male and female are 16+.

YIKES !

Yep, look up “jail bait” in the dictionary and you’ll see a hot young lady like that who is under age.

Our company has a suite every year on fast friday….Hundreds of workers and friends roam the track and party in the the suite.. My wife has 7 girlfriends that raise hell around the track. They walk around the track all day….It is great fun…The guys just hang out at the bar cause it’s free food and booze….And there is a free concert afterwards..
3 doors down played this year..Kid rock last year….I’d like to invite a few lizards this next race to come for the weekend….

Dude !

Can I hug you ?

Hi Lizards!
Long time no comment.
Charles is into cycling I see, that’s cool, so am I. Not so sure about most Americans. Anyway, Contador looked like he had a rocket in his @#$ near the top of the big climb today.
I don’t think Lance has a chance.

I think its a safe assumption that every grown man has checked out a girl before realizing her age at least once.

I agreed even if it was a checkout, it was at best a minor issue, but some other blogs thought it was a major deal. Yet another division from real issues.

Tempest in a teapot, for sure. Very few men have sufficiently iron discipline that they keep their eyes down no matter what. And honestly, there is no harm in seeing what’s meant to be seen.

I understand the Italian guy is actually getting a little flack for sleeping with too many women, even by Italian standards, even hitting on a teenager.

I used to get seats in the fourth turn. They were great. You can see the cars exit 3, through the short shoot, round 4, follow them down the straightaway and watch them disappear around turn 1. It is definitely an event you must witness in person!
