48 Killian Bundy  Fri, Jul 10, 2009 5:14:26pm

Energy independence is within our grasp, sometimes the simplest solutions to problems are right in front of us. With the imminent possiblity of cheap, clean, unlimited hydrogen power, why do we need to rush through the economically suicidal political hackery known as Cap and Trade? Hell, instead of bitching obout cow farts and how to tax them, we should be embracing and lauding the cow for being able to power 19 homes with it's urine.

Forget gas, batteries — pee is new power source

Urine-powered cars, homes and personal electronic devices could be available in six months with new technology developed by scientists from Ohio University.

Using a nickel-based electrode, the scientists can create large amounts of cheap hydrogen from urine that could be burned or used in fuel cells. "One cow can provide enough energy to supply hot water for 19 houses," said Gerardine Botte, a professor at Ohio University developing the technology. "Soldiers in the field could carry their own fuel."

Pee power is based on hydrogen, the most common element in the universe but one that has resisted efforts to produce, store, transport and use economically.

Storing pure hydrogen gas requires high pressure and low temperature. New nanomaterials with high surface areas can adsorb hydrogen, but have yet to be produced on a commercial scale.

Chemically binding hydrogen to other elements, like oxygen to create water, makes it easier to store and transport, but releasing the hydrogen when it's needed usually requires financially prohibitive amounts of electricity.

By attaching hydrogen to another element, nitrogen, Botte and her colleagues realized that they can store hydrogen without the exotic environmental conditions, and then release it with less electricity, 0.037 Volts instead of the 1.23 Volts needed for water.

One molecule of urea, a major component of urine, contains four atoms of hydrogen bonded to two atoms of nitrogen. Stick a special nickel electrode into a pool of urine, apply an electrical current, and hydrogen gas is released.

Botte's current prototype measures 3x3x1 inch and can produce up to 500 milliwatts of power. However, Botte and her colleagues are actively trying to commercialize several larger versions of the technology.

A fuel cell, urine-powered vehicle could theoretically travel 90 miles per gallon. A refrigerator-sized unit could produce one kilowatt of energy for about $5,000, although this price is a rough estimate, says Botte.

"The waste products from say a chicken farm could be used to produce the energy needed to run the farm," said John Stickney, a chemist and professor at the University of Georgia.

For livestock farmers who are required by law to pool their animals' waste, large scale prototypes could turn that urine into power within six months.

Smaller versions likely won't be available until after that, so the average consumer probably shouldn't start saving their pee just yet.

"It is not a solution for all our cars," said Stickney, "but it is the kind of process which will find many applications and will make for a greener world."

/piss on Cap anf Trade, flood Congress with urine power!

Obama plane emergency could have been a disaster

Skillful piloting may have prevented a disaster for President Barack Obama and his campaign last summer, a former federal safety official said Friday.

A report released by the National Transportation Safety Board indicates an inflated slide may have pressed against critical control cables, forcing the emergency landing of Obama's campaign plane on July 7, 2008.

The phone rings and the lady of the house answers, 'Hello.'

'Mrs. Sanders, please.'

'Speaking.'

'Mrs. Sanders, this is Doctor Jones at Saint Agnes Laboratory. When your
husband's doctor sent his biopsy
to the lab last week, a biopsy from another Mr. Sanders arrived as well. We
are now uncertain which one belongs to your husband. Frankly, either way the
results are not too good.'

'What do you mean?' Mrs. Sanders asks nervously.

'Well, one of the specimens tested positive for Alzheimer's and the other
one tested positive for HIV. We can't tell which is which.'

'That's dreadful! Can you do the test again?' questioned Mrs. Sanders.

'Normally we can, but the medical aid will only pay for these expensive
tests one time.'

'Well, what am I supposed to do now?'

'The folks at the medical aid recommend that you drop your husband off
somewhere in the middle of town
and if he finds his way home, don't sleep with him.'

well, in 2005, we had to move mikeydads elderly parents from NY to CO. pops went to nursing home, nanny moved into our house. soon after, she developed severe diarrhea (prob from visiting pops), was sick for 6 weeks, and had to go to rehab to get her strenght back. when she got home, she axed me to help her take a shower. as she was washing 'down there' she said--i have a bump down there near where i pee. aww jeez--i said--well, mom, could it be your clitoris? she says--whats that?--aww jeez again--i said-blushing furiously-(btw-she had 3 husbands) its part of a womans sex organs. NAWW she says- i aint got one of those! sooo --i said, well the next time you see your dr- ask him! sooo--2 weeks later we go to see her hunky young dr- and sure enuf-she asks him about her bump!
well, she is so deaf that he and could talk under our breath and he goes--"what the hell?" i said "i told her to ask you" and he and i just busted out. he said i'll get even with ya. he gave her some cream to rub on it! i never did ask if it felt good when she rubbed it-- it never was discussed again.

Right. Caught up with that video this afternoon. United's reaction is disgusting yet unfortunately typical. Of course we're probably talking about management and labor issues as in the ground crews treating luggage like bails of hay. According to Taylor guitars the TSA allows you to bring a guitar on bard as a carry on. A lot of airlines will tell you otherwise.

Kian Tajbakhsh: Iran Arrests First American Citizen

An Iranian-American scholar whom Iran once accused of fomenting political unrest has been arrested by authorities there for the second time in two years, the State Department and the man's family said Friday.

Security forces arrested Kian Tajbakhsh late Thursday, a family member told The Associated Press. The relative was in contact with Tajbakhsh's wife, who witnessed the arrest in Tehran.

State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters that the United States was aware of the arrest and was checking into the circumstances. He provided no further detail.

I had a guitar once in the overhead. When I went to open it almost came crashing down. No problem whatsoever with everyone onboard. This was back in the nicer days of flying. Also flew two bike frames and the works for bike trip (Newark to Burlington) on People Express without a problem.

Today the airlines attitudes are completely different. Even though we subsidize their existence to a great extent through various agencies. I flew United once and didn't like the condition of the aircraft -- worn out.

Deputies warn farms that activists might be on the prowl

Summit County Sheriff's Office deputies who suspect animal-rights activists are behind a rash of threats leveled at fur farms on the East Side have stepped up their "mink patrols." Officers have closely monitored area mink ranches since the threats began in June.

"They mentioned Summit County because we have fur breeders here," Sheriff's Office Detective Ron Bridge said about the threats. "It was general for the fur breeding industry. But obviously we were named because we have fur farms in our county."

Cemetery workers made $300K in gravedigging scheme

ALSIP, Ill. – Four former employees accused of digging up bodies and reselling plots at a historic black cemetery near Chicago made about $300,000 in a scheme believed to have stretched back at least four years, authorities said Friday.

Three gravediggers and a manager at the Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip are accused of unearthing hundreds of corpses and either dumping some in a weeded, desolate area near the cemetery or double-stacking others in graves. The cemetery is the burial place of civil rights-era lynching victim Emmett Till and blues singers Willie Dixon and Dinah Washington.

Victoria Police are investigating claims that an international eco-terrorist group, the Earth Liberation Front, delivered a threatening letter to the suburban home of Hazlewood power station boss Graeme York, earlier this month.

The letter, dropped without a stamp in Mr York’s mailbox, says: "You are responsible for the dirtiest power station in Australia and the most polluting in the industrialised world.

I think it's all a matter of perspective. On the one hand you have the conservatives, under full scale assault from every aspect of the culture - media, education, government, the dominant culture. Sure they have blemishes, but the blemishes pale in comparison to the blatant, full throated ramming through of every crazy idea under the sun with the full power of the government behind it.
When you're at the Little Big Horn, it's a good idea to focus your aim on the screaming Indians around you; not settle scores with the troopers that piss you off. That can wait for later but the first priority is to survive. IMHO.

IMHO.

A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. The Birchers and fascists are a drain- we don't need allies like them. In fact- they're not allies at all. They're using us- and that pisses me off. The right will continue to lose people like me, people that want nothing to do with these jerks. They're not allies- they're a liability.

Woman sitting on toilet accidentally shot in leg

TAMPA, Fla. – Authorities said a bullet from a gun that was accidentally dropped injured a Tampa woman sitting in a bathroom stall. Police said the bullet hit 53-year-old Janifer Bliss in the lower left leg. She was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
Bliss was sitting on the toilet in a hotel bathroom when a woman in the next stall accidentally let her handgun slip out of her waist holster. The weapon discharged when it hit the ground.
Police said the gun belonged to a 56-year-old woman who has a concealed weapons permit.
The case has been referred to the State Attorney's Office to determine if any charges will be filed.

The president would approve.

Just showed them to my buddy and his wife and the wife said, "Hell, I'd do them", but she's had a few beers :)

Nope, only in his dreams. You can't get decent collards in SF; I've tried. He has to settle for bok choy with a light vinaigrette.

Or so I've heard.

well, it ain't easy getting your knickers off if you're not wearing a skirt...........so I've been told........

That's an excellent point.

I suspect people bring EXTRA undies to throw nowadays, since almost no one wears skirts. :D

True story...back when Bear Bryant was in his prime with the Crimson Tide, the sponsors of the coach's TV show were Coca-Cola and Golden Flake potato chips. Their slogan: "A great pair, says the Bear!"

As you can imagine, this famous tag line was expropriated for many a bootleg series of women's T-shirts and tops.

re: #261 reine.de.tout

hey
I responded to your anecdote on the previous thread, if you're interested.

Hey, I spells 'em like I says 'em.

I said it wasn't data, but in my working career I've seen more like my story than like your story.

Except, of all companies, RJReynolds. They had a top-notch HR group, back in the day. Don't know what they have now. But if you had a question, they had the answer, or would have the answer and get back to you within 2 hours.

Competent HR folks are invaluable to management. Incompetent HR people are a curse, a drag, and hard to fire.

You are exactly right. In my experience, a company has incompetent HR when they fail to fully appreciate the need for HR in the first place. That's why I took issue with the "HR is worthless" statement earlier. If a company believes HR is worthless, that is what they will have - a worthless HR department. It's a fact. Those companies that value HR, have good HR departments. Very simple.

There was a Celtic group called The House Band that did that tune 15 years ago. I have six CDs by them; I can find everyone of the six, except the one "Jig Jazz" is on. Go fig.
