Graphics Tutorial: A Glassy Green Button in Fireworks CS4

Technology | Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 8:03:19 pm PDT

Believe it or not, several people emailed because they noticed our new Web 2.0-style buttons for Paypal donations and subscriptions and our Amazon store, and wanted to know where the heck I got those nice glassy gray buttons. Well, I made them myself with Adobe Fireworks CS4. There are many ways to create these kinds of buttons, and since it’s a hideously slow news night, here’s mine.

In this tutorial we’ll create a glassy green button that will end up looking like this:

We’ll start with a new 300x300 document with a white background, and use the rectangle tool to draw a rectangle measuring 160x80 pixels, then set the roundness to 15 pixels:

Then we’ll set the fill style to Linear Gradient, fading from the original medium green to a slightly darker green, and give the fill a slight diagonal angle:

Now we’re going to make a copy of this rounded rectangle, by using the Copy and Paste commands (on a Mac, Command-C followed by Command-V). The image won’t change, because the copy is placed directly on top of the original.

Next, switch to the Ellipse tool, and draw an ellipse starting above the left edge of our rectangle, resulting in a shape like this:

Select the copy of the rounded rectangle by holding Shift and clicking, so that both the ellipse and the copy of the rectangle are selected, then use the Combine Paths -> Intersection option:

This gives us a slice that matches the top edge of the rounded rectangle, with a smooth curve on the bottom. This is going to be the “reflection” at the top of our button. Adjust the gradient fill so that both colors are white, fading to transparent:

Now drag the bottom of the gradient fill marker (the square end) up to the bottom of the curved slice (we’ve switched to 400% magnification in this image):

In the next step we’ll use Fireworks’ live effects to add a pure white inner glow to the main rounded rectangle, with a width of 3 pixels, an opacity of 65%, and a softness of 7:

Then we’ll add a drop shadow with a width of 1 pixel, an opacity of 50%, and a softness of 5, to give it some more depth. For the color of the shadow, we’ll use the dark green at the bottom right of the main rectangle:

Next, we add a single-pixel soft medium green outline to the main rectangle. When we zoom in to check this, though, something doesn’t look right; that slice we created earlier is covering up the main rectangle’s outline:

So let’s adjust the size of that slice using Fireworks’ “Free Transform” tool. We’ll pull the top, right, and left sides in by one pixel:

Et voila! A very nice pseudo-glassy button, suitable for many Internet uses:

The glassy green button is very pretty. It needs a place on this site.

Here is what I hate about Fireworks CS4.

I have used every version of Fireworks since Studio MX, and they all supported right-to-left text placement (for languages like Hebrew). Photoshop does not have this ability, unless you purchase a special "Middle East" package.

Adoba acquired Macromedia, and in CS4 this feature disappeared! (which existed in CS3 and all previous versions of FW)

I wrote to Adobe customer service and got no answer. I posted on their FW developers forum, and the tech said, "we will consider this feature, if enough people request it we will consider adding it." I said MORON my question was WHY DID YOU TAKE IT AWAY?

Wow, longest post by Charles I've ever seen. Quite informative, too. I think I'm gonna go make a bunch of glassy stuff, just for fun.

Pretty, and pretty amazing what can be done by a person in their home.

I don't have any need to spend close to $300 for something like that; but I love love love whatever it is I use to fiddle around with my photographs. I'll take several, like from a family vacation, and make a collage and send it to everybody.

AP source: Holder considering torture probe

Attorney General Eric Holder is considering whether to appoint a criminal prosecutor to investigate the Bush administration's interrogation practices, a controversial move that would run counter to President Barack Obama's wishes to leave the issue in the past.

Holder plans to make a final decision within the next few weeks, a Justice Department official told The Associated Press on Saturday night. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on a pending matter.

Justice Department spokesman Matt Miller said Holder planned to "follow the facts and the law."

After 20 Years, Maryland Man’s Mac IIci Finally Dies

I love old computers. Nostalgic. A friend of mind paid $5000 for an Apple IIE. Not too many years after that I bought three of them for less than $500. Later a couple of Macs for about $100 each. And I remember being fascinated by a hand held calculator before that, before the first personal computer.

That's an original approach. Sigh. Looks like the racism cloud is going to linger and grow.

600$ for a watch?....good grief no wonder America is in such dire straights

34 EmmmieG  Sat, Jul 11, 2009 8:43:41pm

In the mid-80's my parents bought an Apple IIe. They also bought Applewriter. Now, our wonderfully tough English teacher insisted that we all learn to write a paper on the computer (remember, this was 1987), and it had to be on Applewriter.

I was the only kid in the class who didn't have to do late nights at the school, but could do late nights in the comfort of my own home.

Thanks, Mom and Dad.

I used to work in downtown Boston, where I'd see watches going for over $14,000
I wear a watch that lists for $50-60 and does more. Yes, it won't last forever, but if something happens to it, I'm not out much money.

I'm one of the few my age really comfortable with computers. My high school had one (an IBM 1130) and I spent time on the weekends at MIT using computers I wasn't supposed to have access to. I was around for some of the events described in at least one edition of the Hackers' Dictionary. I keep my old laptop synced with this one. I have backups on external disks at work and at home.

I copy all my install disks and use the copies, the originals go in the safe.

I maintain my systems. My laptop right now I have 51 days uptime.

I maintain a back up of all my plays and writings, any contract programming projects and emails on a memory stick and it is in my car. I maintain another copy on a stick in my briefcase.

Since I live in an apartment, and I certainly don't trust having some one a block away fall asleep drunk with a lit cigarette, and all my data goes up in smoke.

In general, it's a good idea to keep a backup of your important data "off site" anyway.

'nother shocker

Speaking of... Whats a good way to get worms out of the ground? 480 volts thats how. But would you use that tactic if you were searching for rare giant worms that you want classified as endangered?

The third method is new to this search, using electricity to shock worms to the surface.

"The electro shocker is pretty cool," said Joanna Blaszczak, a student at Cornell who is spending her summer working to find the worm alongside Shan Xu, a graduate student from Chengdu, China, and support scientist Karl Umiker.

The shocker can deliver up to 480 volts. That makes it dangerous to touch, and it could potentially fry a specimen.

Torture!

A 4 gig memory stick is 20 bucks. Works for me. So in a sense, I have a full office system and all my needed data on a single stick. Now whether or not the report on that website is true or not I don't know. But IF it's correct, I don't want her to be the head of the (almost) Young Republicans.
I mean if theres one SUREFIRE BET you can win, it's this one: Where do most Black Americans live and work? Urban America. Which Political Party has controlled MOST of Urban America for oh, 30 years or so now (with the occasional member of the opposite party thrown in there)? Which policital party - no doubt as a result of controlling Urban America - from at least a political standpoint - has done the least amount of good for Black Americans?
Yep.
But the fact is that President Obama COULDN'T POSSIBLY have gotten elected without a lot of White voters voting for him as well. And would have probably been CREAMED if the MSM had done it's job properly.
(now you ask me - are there more Black reprorters or White reporters in the MSM ?).
Y'all ought to check out Afrocity's blog "Autographed Letter Signed at [Link: afrocityblog.wordpress.com...]
to see just how pissed off some Black Conservatives/Republicans are at the way Blacks have been treated by Obama's party.
Really - there's at least two kinds of racisim in America - and frankly, being mayor of a big urban center is apt to have a more negative effect on Black Americans IMO, than is the head of the Youngish Republicans. That's not to excuse comments she allegedly made, but is I think a more effective comeback to a charge of racism on the part of Republicans - especially The Young Republicans.

Going on the Great American Road Trip in the morning. Family of 5 in the SUV to Orlando. W00t!

We did that at the end of June. 3000 miles, Chicago-ish to Rapid City, SD, to ND, to Northern Wis and back to Chicago-ish.

Did almost every National Park on the route.

Have fun in Orlando!

Uh, the guy handing out the guns would most likely be the armorer - where were you that you saw those re-enactors and what battle(s) were they re-enacting?

Fort Delaware on Peapatch Island. They had Rebel POW's, and the whole Fort was 'staffed' with everything from doctors, to laundress to cooks and soldiers. They weren't doing battle, just going about their daily business. I never thought about it before, but they didn't have antibiotics back then since they weren't even aware of bacteria. Infections were very bad news.

reformat is more like it, it took 20 minutes to get windows to open.

A couple years back, I examined a neighbor's windows machine which had died after a lightning storm. Scandisk log indicated something like 3000 bad clusters at last run. This was about 20% of the entire disk capacity. Modem log (dated a couple days after that) indicated last activity was a failed dialout. (He had DSL.) Other inspection revealed three bootable partitions. (There shoulda been one, total.) There were at least 3 directory trees containing similar large collections of OS softwares such as motherboard, video, mass storage and other drivers for DOS, OS/2, win3.1, win95, win98, win2k, linux, unix, OS-X, etc.

So I suspect a mere re-format would not have regained control. The owner and I decided to FDISK the HD and reinitialize it to a single partition, from a clean boot floppy. Just to be sure. *Then* we reformatted and re-installed windoze.

Actually, a bird expert told me that parrots can hold their own with cats. They are not afraid of them and will bite the shit out of a cat if needed.

But, I'm not going to experiment, we are going to have to find a placement for the cage that is secure.

Come on, didn't you like the "Rat Drudge" moniker?

Is your Parrott the big kind that, in the wild, could hunt and eat cats?

I had a roomate once that had a parrott that could kill a human if it wanted to. Thank goodness it never seemed to want to.

re: #302 Walter L. Newton

One more day, and then on Monday, I make the major final part of my move to the Secret Mountain Lair. Only thing in this apartment left to go is the bed, sofa, computer, TV and a bookcase.

And Maisey the Parrot. She will have new friends on Monday afternoon. a husky dog, a chow mix dog, a dingo mix dog and TWO cats... this is going to be interesting.

Maisey has lived with dogs before, and she is not bothered by them, and dogs tend to see birds as sort of friendly. But the cats, well, we'll see.

I bird sat the bosses' Cockatiels for a couple weeks. During the day the sat on the outside top of the cage. Our cat decided a bird would be a nice snack. Cat stalks the Cockatiel. Bird is just watching the cat. When the cat get ready to pounce the Cockatiel's crest goes up, he puffs up, lets out a god awful screech and flies right at the cat. Cat's eye go big as saucers and he bolts.

Cat gave those birds a wide berth the rest of the time.

No, it's an iron cage, no way into it for a cat, and too stable to tip over. And we have some creative spots for it.

And you are correct, they are a large prey, and from what I am told, by the lady who does Maiseys nail clipping (she breeds parrots), the bird will attack the cats first.

But like I say, we are not going to try to start something.

You seem to know and follow the left side talking points.
I don't see you doing independent research.
Not trusting your information sources might give you a different view. Every major news and information source I know of spins, twists, and chooses stories to fit a particular template. I don't believe the media, because they lie. I don't believe the "alternative media", because they are nuts. I do not desire an adversarial role here. But I see the latest smear put forth without any filter, it almost makes you look naive.

Hey, look at the intention, not the result! What's the matter with you? Didn't you get Warm and Fuzzy Memo #135. It clearly states that it does not matter what happens as a result of a feel good policy, only the personal satisfaction that you did the "right thing" matters.

Totally an artificial construct, I'd say. But it's the kind of distinction that has always made headlines in the past.

First black president, first Hispanic/female SC nominee, first female SotH.

First man on the moon. First four-minute mile.

Just so happens all the "firsts" in politics right now are Democrats. Doesn't keep it from being tiresome, does it?

First man to have gay brothel run out of his house, without him being aware of it.
First president to be buds with an unrepentant terrorist.
First american congress to nationalize an auto industry.

We live in interesting times.

They may have been cawing in for reinforcements. Crows will gather together in a large group if they want to attack something in mass. It is kind of fascinating watching them harass the Eagles here. They look like little blackbirds when right next to an eagle. The harass in teams and in waves. It is not as organized and rational as lionesses hunting in the savannas but it bares a resemblance.

I just read the two links freetoken provided in the next thread, one was the same one you posted.

re: #466 ShanghaiEd

I saw upthread that someone tried to change the subject by asking about Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, etc... . As an aside, these gentlemen and others like them, would be a facsinating topic of conversation - Why do Democrats have to show respect to them, where did their influence come from, how did they become spokesmen or leaders of the black community, etc...

Ed probably thinks the LGF goalposts should be taken to the dragstrip to see if we can run in the low 12's , or are we going to run in a different class.

No, I don't think that, because I don't know what you mean.

Because it's a right wing publication?

You're f***ing with me, KB. One more serious try at getting a credible source from you, and then I'll quit trying to kick Lucy's football and move on to other threads.

You're in a good place. Get to know people here and follow the lincs, then make up your own mind. You're not being jerked around, just called to account now and then.

Thanks, KB. I've bookmarked it.

re: #470 ShanghaiEd

I haven't been posting as much lately - house, work, etc...

To me, this is worthy of Captain Obvious: there has been quite a change in the atmosphere around here since the Palin resignation thing. And I'd guess that would be true wherever Conservatives and Liberals are together discussing politics. I think Palin is a symbol for the MSM/GOP theme in the eyes of the conservatives. And the Letterman thing and the resignation thing has brought this to a boil.

You got that link from Irenicum. You did not get it from a "news source, It is not news. We here are not news, generally. Anyone can make a blog. here are some scources that are more reliable; Drudge, CNN, MSN. They are better than nothing.
Here are unreliable sources; RENSE, World Net Daily,Prison Planet.
Christian news sources and atheist news sources are unreliable because the are pushing one point of view. Democratic and Republican sources are not news, they are press releases to influence opinion.

It's a [expletive deleted] blog!

/apparently you missed what I just posted, here's a news aggregator site, news. wire services, leans right of center, no blogs allowed

Thanks, kateca. I know it' a good place.

Being called to account is the whole point of a discussion, I think. I just get tired of playing, "Nope, you picked the wrong kind of link again" before the discussion can get started. Make sense? Or has that not been a problem for you?

Drag race analogy . When you argue and find youself facing a shift in the argument because you were winning, They have "moved the goalposts".

re: #469 ShanghaiEd

But, but, but...people post links here all the time, and they're discussed without the link being attacked. Why are some links questioned up front, and others aren't? I know I'm not a lucky person, but how can I have a 99 percent batting average in offering up unacceptable links when nobody can name me a single source that's considered credible. Don't tell me I'm imagining this?

I don't think this would have been an issue two months ago - in fact, it wasn't according to my recollection. People sniped, but not for a thread and a half. Either LGF'ers are shy about critisizing new people (don't think so) or you changed your posting style (I haven't noticed) or there is something else at play here. I'm maintaining that the Palin thing brought out the emotion unlike any other political figure I've seen recently.

Thanks, swamp. That's very helpful info. I'm making progress.

One quick quibble...I posted a link to a CNN story on another blog's comment thread recently, and was laughed at for quoting the "Communist News Network." But if you say it's reliable, I'll take your word for it.

No, it's not a problem. It's never a problem when you stimulate discussion. I would guess that you are a welcome contributor, even if sometimes misguided:>

Stick around.

I've heard that things were different before and that things changed. This I don't doubt. I was just noticing the change I've noticed between the time I joined in May, I think and today. No conspiracy here or injustice, just an observation on the power of the Palin thing, regardless of what side you are on with regard to her.

A really smart bird would tease Jeff from just out of his reach.

Crows do that. Talk about a mean and crafty bird.

I LOVE crows. They sound like summer. Very clever and interesting birds.
