American Library Association Panelists Refuse to Appear with Robert Spencer

US News • Views: 3,364

An American Library Association panel discussion on Islam has been canceled, after three of the four panelists refused to participate with anti-Islam blogger Robert Spencer.

On July 7th, a group of nine members sent the ALA an open letter regarding Robert Spencer’s participation. This led to the withdrawal of Dr. Marcia Hermansen, a professor of Islamic Studies at Loyola University, neuropsychologist Dr. Alia Ammar, and Dr. Esmail Koushanpour of Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago.

Spencer, meanwhile, blames me for it, in a bizarre 2300-word rant that’s nearly incoherent with rage and venom.

Here’s the latest statement from the organization behind the Islam panel.

There weren't any comments yet on the Spenser diatribe. He's kinda goofy, in a really goofed-out lunaticky way.

It's weird he blames you Charles. I chat and post in several different internet groups and in all the times I've mentioned LGF noone ever knows what I'm talking about. I like you but your influence IS limited. Some folks just need someone to blame I guess.

Can't they just toss him and hold the discussion anyway? Being the uber-lib ALA though they have to play the martyr I guess.

To head off the inevitable red herring, this has nothing at all to do with free speech. He is still free to express his increasingly insane opinions any time he likes. Needless (maybe) to say, he has no Constitutional right to appear in the ALA forum or to require that the other members agree to appear with him.

There's no tactful way to rescind an invitation once it's gone out. The refusal of others to attend and the subsequent scotching of the event is pretty much the only graceful way for this to play out.

The ALA could look into Spencer and denounce him, of course, but it's a bit late for that. Perhaps in the future they'll decide prior to sending out invitations just who should be on the guest list.

CAIR also objected I had read. And I was under the belief that Spencer withdrew. As for the forum:

The Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Roundtable (EMIERT) invited a panel of four speakers to present differing viewpoints on "Perspectives on Islam: Beyond the Stereotyping." On behalf of EMIERT I regret to inform you that our panel discussion will not be held Sunday, July 12th. With the withdrawal of three of the four panelists we cannot provide a fair and equitable forum to explore the diversity of opinions that the panel would have offered.

Nothing could be further from the truth. I believe three members of the panel would merely reflect the kumbaya BS we get from the MSM, CAIR and other Islamic sources every day. We are to close our eyes to the fact that 99% of religious violence in the modern day is perpetrated by one religion.

Dear mr spencer-

It's no one's fault but your own that you are getting caught in your odious dealings. People are noticing, and it's not going to get better- it will only grow worse as you continue to carry on the way you do with whom you do. But please carry on in not taking responsibility for your own reputation, but continue to blame your critics for noticing. It adds to your aura of..... credibility.

I think maybe folks should take this advice from the lyrics of the song "The Lady is a Tramp":

She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She likes the theater but never come late
She never bothers with people she hates

If you don't like someone -- ignore them. Don't spend your days writing obsessively about them.

Spencer has no room to bitch. This is how moral people deal with crazies: they refuse to associate with them. The rest of the panel didn't want to associate with an extremist and chose not to participate in the panel. The counter jihad blogs should have refused to associate with neo-nazis and now they have to pay the price. Too bad.

We are to close our eyes to the fact that 99% of religious violence in the modern day is perpetrated by one religion.

Robert Spencer has gone off the rails. I am a fan of his work. But he is unable to take an insult without going livid. It's gotten worse since he got into bed with Pamela Geller. His personal animosities are clouding out his scholarly work. Soon he'll be known for the former not the latter.

As for the people withdrawing. I doubt they know about the blog wars and did so because of Spencer's perceived association with questionable balkans. His light meglomania on Turkey is just fantasy but has roots in his past.

"Charles Johnson of that cesspool of lies and hate"

Mr. Spencer, I visit this site every day, What you describe above is never tolerated here.
I have seen mistakes, and when Charles makes them he corrects them.
He doesn't dance around them and make excuses, or try to bullshit his way out of it, maybe there is a lesson for you in that.
I also read as many of the comments as I can, and liars are not made to feel welcome here, nor are hateful idiots, racists , bigots or fascists.
I know very well, about the non scandal with the fauxtography you lead out with, it was never presented the way you wish to exploit it.
Your a small petty, and vindictive man.
I would pity you, but I cant, your out right lies, falsehoods and distortions prevent it.
Please put your head in its normal docking position.

re: #4 Erik The Red

Whats up with the two photos? Is RS accusing you of something?

It's pathetic. Spencer alleged that Charles mendaciously lied in a spreading mendacious lying falsehoods kind of way, because the picture of the two individuals he posted happened to have an altered background. Given that Charles only point in posting the pic was to demonstrate the association between the two individuals in the foreground, it's obvious Spencer is just grasping at straws in the most pathetic manner. It was enough to please his stupid fans though, of course.

So, I do not understand some things. I get it that pam and this idiot are willing to embrace skinheads in order to get to islamofascists and show them for who they really are...

But, I see skinheads as the same sort of people as the islamofascists, just with a fifferent frosting.

How do they justify embracing such people to achive the goals?
Really, I wouldnt want to be under the thumb of either group, why would they?..(add in the far left like mama moonbat belongs to in there too.)

Iworked in Bullhead City for a few years. Worked at night in the summer. In the afternoon I would repair and prep our machinery (concrete pumps) for the next night in an open gravel yard..
After repeated begging for a shop I put one of those 160 deg thermometers on the side of one of the pumps. It read 146. 102 wahabicorridor  Sun, Jul 12, 2009 4:22:45pm

Ok, from the open letter re: Spencer we have this:

Mr. Spencer in fact goes as far as to equate Islam with fascism. According to him,

The misbegotten term “Islamo-fascism” is wholly redundant: Islam itself is a kind of fascism that achieves its full and proper form only when it assumes the powers of the state.” (www.jihadwatch.com/islam101

The text at that link was not written by Spencer, it was written by Gregory Davis. I read it. I did not see the words 'islamofacism' or 'facism' anywhere in it. It is simply background on Islam.

These people made the right move for the wrong reason. Spencer is good on the threat of Islam. The problem is he can't see the forest for the trees when it comes to our current day facists.

As for the fauxtography that Spencer claims Charles was duped by (I never saw either photo on this site, but then I don't visit every day, so I don't know which photo he ran, if either) - Spencer misses the point. IT WAS STILL DEWINTER AND BEISICHT SHAKING HANDS.

What I'm missing - and maybe I'm expecting too much from Spencer - is how he connects Charles to this library brouhaha.

But I remember the few times Spencer joined us here and I engaged him. His ecquivocation re: the european facist groups was disturbing, to say the least (and I'm sure Charles could find those threads/posts). He did, finally, write something on his site that seemed a clear repudiation of them and then - he can't see the problem with Geller or GOV and any of of their buds.

The man has a serious disconnect somewhere.

On the topic of mistakes; I mailed Charles about this before but haven't gotten a response yet (must've been quite some time now; months). I think Spencer really wasn't "in the know" about that convention in Cologne or agreed to participate. From what I know, some (I may be mistaken, but at least Le Pen didn't) of the participants listed on pro-Köln's site for the convention before the latest one didn't even know they were listed, nor did they know anything about pro-Köln. Not particularly a good thing to get on that list in the first place though.

Unfortunately for Spencer there is no middle ground....you either agree with him 100% or you an adversary. And if you are prominent in any way he will take very personally. He may have some good ideas, but he is suffering from an academic version of a mental disorder that leaders of large corporations often come down with. They are constantly being told how brilliant they are and after awhile they start believing there own press. After that any contradiction, no matter how slight is a Machiavellian plot to destroy.

re: #164 mrbaracuda

On the topic of mistakes; I mailed Charles about this before but haven't gotten a response yet (must've been quite some time now; months). I think Spencer really wasn't "in the know" about that convention in Cologne or agreed to participate. From what I know, some (I may be mistaken, but at least Le Pen didn't) of the participants listed on pro-Köln's site for the convention before the latest one didn't even know they were listed, nor did they know anything about pro-Köln. Not particularly a good thing to get on that list in the first place though.

Perhaps you will get Charles attention now.

That's too bad....I hope it takes a long slow time to kill him off (with extra suffering and pain). Judging by the last photo saw of him, he was diagnosed quite a while ago. He is looking pretty frail.

Robert Spencer preformed quite the little song and dance routine to keep Charles and others off his little trail of fascist apologia. Always telling Charles he agreed- these people should be looked into, etc, etc. In the meantime- he was carrying on as he always had. It wasn't until people started noticing robert was playing both sides of the field that any issues arose. And then the mask fell completely. He's been attacking Charles and LGF ever since.

For me, I learned that those who tap dance around fascists are not trustworthy.

Obama really jumped ahead in the caucus states.....Iowa, Texas, etc because he was way more organized and motivated. He also did well enough in the states he lost because of the proportionality of the democrat primary system. McCain won so fast because the Republicans still use the all or nothing system.

What Obama did was create a grassroots machine with those groups you list above. To beat him, the Republicans should study and take notes on how Obama did it......Even if the economy is in the tank and people blame Obama, he will still perform well in an election because he has a system set up to do just that........

One of the problems with Spencer (a long time ago, I attributed this to simply not knowing any better) is that when he starts into his "critique" of Islam, many of those reading/listening in Europe make certain inferences. The first is that, in Europe, there are state censors...they don't have a First Amendment...so, they're "practiced" in the art of double speak (it's akin to Clinton's "I did not have sex with that woman"...and, when cornered, retorting: "It all depends on what the definition of "is" is...") I think we (seemingly most adult readers of Spencer) can safely conclude that Spencer hates/reviles the religion of Islam. It's as if he's in a debate, and the debate resolution is: "Resolved, Islam is a religion beyond redemption." And, he's under the belief that it's his personal "mission" to argue on behalf of the Affirmative. (reminds me of that "My Uncle Napoleon") (Seriously, can anyone imagine Robert Spencer saying something "nice" about Islam? It's just not his "thing.") Anyway, I also can't imagine Spencer going to some event to discuss something about Islam -- beyond the stereotypes of Islam...I mean, what would Spencer have to say? (other than to act as a counter-weight to the other attendees, with Spencer reaffirming existing memes, such as "Muslims hate women; Muslims are homophobic; Muslims are violent; Muslims are fanatics; etc, etc." and then quoting the Koran to "document" his claims...)

Did you know Bawer appeard on some very strange Australian (I think; "Shire Network News") (internert)-radio show? Here, let me give you the link to it [Link: snnsite.com...]

I felt a little sorry for Bawer, since he sounded like he would break into tears any moment now.

What's strange about SNN? I think it's a great pod-cast. They did an interview with Filip Dewinter shortly after Charles first started expressing concerns about Vlaams Belang that basically blew his facade wide open.

Um, since I don't know what that is, I don't think so -- I was driving pretty normally for someone getting re-accustmed to a stick shift. But the car may be; it's a '91 Geo Metro, 1-liter 3-cyl engine with a 5-speed manual transmission. Curb weight of 1650 pounds, so she's light, and also surprisingly peppy.

Best hangover remedy is to drink at least two large glasses of water before going to bed drunk. Most of the headaches result from dehydration. A little salt in the water is not bad either up to the point of making one sick to the stomach. - My two cents.

Which is a lovely thing in my opinion.

It can be a wonderful thing. The problem today is these Representatives are looking to stay there permanently. In a two year cycle you spend as much time fundraising as you do "legislating". The little Princes in the Congress have also written laws which help them to stay in power, allow them to keep much of the money they raise for elections, and the spoils system of committees and earmarks has made being a Representative a meal ticket. Feathering their nests, bringing home as much pork as possible to the home district to ensure re-election and playing the old you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours is in place.

I like our system a lot, but it only works as well as the people running it.....sometimes, we are served poorly.

Spencer won't take any personal responsibility for his actions. Whether he cares to admit it or not, aligning himself with political organizations like pro-Koln will have repercussions somewhere along the road. Just as much as there as freedom of association there is also the freedom to disassociate.

No amount of projection, deflection or rationalization will remove the fact that he has made his own bed for this situation. He can try once again to blame Charles and utilize the petty and false argument that "Hamas backed CAIR" is using information from LGF to limit his public appearances -- his associations with neo-fascist European groups is no secret even in the world outside of the internet. Furthermore, in no case is this libel as he so frequently suggests since these associations are based on fact.

As the open letter illustrates, there are a great deal of people with concerns regarding Spencer's inclusion in panel discussions. Another childish tirade on his part placing the blame squarely on Charles only proves how irrational he can be regarding this situation.

re: #246 J.S.

One of the problems with Spencer (a long time ago, I attributed this to simply not knowing any better) is that when he starts into his "critique" of Islam, many of those reading/listening in Europe make certain inferences. The first is that, in Europe, there are state censors...they don't have a First Amendment...so, they're "practiced" in the art of double speak

In case you want to know the part relevant to the topic we have in German Basic Law: [Link: www.iuscomp.org...]

Although it is more restricted than the freedoms provided by the First Amendment of the U.S. constitution (if I am not mistaken libel/slander is easy to sue for in Germany compared to the U.S., and then there are all the hate speech laws as well as the ones stemming from our Nazi-Germany past), there is little censorship and my subjective feeling is that &sect5 (1) has gained more importance (there was one ruling by the Supreme Court here I didn't agree with, but was happy they ruled that way based on &sect5). And usually it is rather self-consorship that is practiced than state-censorship (state TV is a rather weird construct, akin to the BBC I suppose, meaning half-state- half-privately owned).

When the Novel Dune was serialized in a Science Fiction magazine (Galaxy I think), it came with a lot of graphics that gave some background info you never see in the books. It started out OK, but after induction into the Fremen it went very rapidly downhill. Herbert tried to kill the hero off, but the publisher stacked so much cash up front he had to make a gazillion sequels.

Quite so! As a matter of fact, it's the first thing on the list:

I. Basic Rights
Article 1 [Human dignity]

(1) Human dignity shall be inviolable. To respect and protect it shall be the duty of all state authority.

(2) The German people therefore acknowledge inviolable and inalienable human rights as the basis of every community, of peace and of justice in the world.

(3) The following basic rights shall bind the legislature, the executive, and the judiciary as directly applicable law.

If I am not mistaken our courts got into a little trouble with the first one once we caught us some Somalian pirates, LoL. Note it says Human dignity, not something like "The dignity of a [German] citizen".

I think it was right here at LGF that spencer posted comments on a Totten piece on Kosovo- he was fairly critical. I have no idea if Mr Totten responded at all.

I found medaura's post about it:

Totten is targeted as an impressionable naïve traveler who fails to recognize what Spencer believes to be the inescapable ideological vacuum within any not-yet-radical Muslim community —communities which, according to Spencer, despite any and all current pretensions of liberalism and Westophilia, are essentially unstable oxymoronic applications of Islam which are doomed to gravitate toward radicalism in the long run. Kosovo can be no exception, since a perpetual state of jihad is an inexorable core tenet of Islam. Here I will not dwell on the theological subtleties he employs to reach his conclusion (which I suspect Mr. Spencer would accuse me of misrepresenting anyway), but the bottom line of his dissatisfaction with Totten’s reports seems to boil down to Totten’s portrayal of Kosovars as an overall peaceful, progressive, Westward-oriented, and culturally modern people. To suggest that a population with a Muslim background could merit such positive characterizations (without casting apocalyptic doubts on their future sustainability) is heresy!

re: #312 dmandman

When the Novel Dune was serialized in a Science Fiction magazine (Galaxy I think), it came with a lot of graphics that gave some background info you never see in the books. It started out OK, but after induction into the Fremen it went very rapidly downhill. Herbert tried to kill the hero off, but the publisher stacked so much cash up front he had to make a gazillion sequels.

I have the old SFBC (Doubleday) hardback of Dune, that was the original of the Ballantine (?) paperback. It was the first SF novel I ever saw with a humongous glossary in front, and three appendices that were altogether close to the size of the timeline at the end of Tolkien's Return of the King. I distinctly remember thinking that this would be more what I'd expect to find in a doctoral thesis. Herbert's novel always struck me as less a novel than a fictionalized scenario for exploring the possible permutations of high-desert ecology.

It's possible to write an interesting SF novel based pretty much just on the peculiarities of a planetary environment; think Uller Uprising by H. Beam Piper, Big Planet by Jack Vance, or any of the three Deathworld novels by Harry Harrison. Herbert, however, seemed more interested in the ecology angle than the storytelling angle. The later books were more about Machiavellian (or maybe a better term would be "Richelieuian") court intrigues than anything else. While I own, and have read, most of the Dune series, I can't say I've ever really found them compelling reading.

Both movie versions left me equally unimpressed (the David Lynch and the Sci-Fi Channel attempt). The Lynch version even managed what I would regard as the almost impossible feat of putting Sean Young in skintight rubber and making her look...frumpy. (Nice going, Dave.) Both versions also had some of the most daft-looking vehicles and weapons since a Buster Crabbe "Flash Gordon" serial, which seriously annoyed me.

Having read a lot of Herbert's other work, I'd have to say his reputation mainly is due to Dune. I'd also have to say it's one of the most over-rated SF novels, or series, ever.

/just IMHO.

cheers

eon

Boogers, I never knew it was serialized first, I try to collect such tings, but Wikipedia agrees:

Herbert spent the next five years researching, writing and revising what would eventually become Dune, later serialized in Analog magazine from 1963 to 1965 as two shorter works, Dune World and The Prophet of Dune

OK, next weekend I'm off to practically the last used bookstore in Los Angeles, if they're still open (Book Castle in Burbank). For that matter, I have some boxes in storage ...

I am surprised no one tries to run against those two clowns, and try to out-liberal them. Campaign on ending the Iraq war, throwing Booosh in jail with warcrimes, etc. Whip the LLL into a frenzy, get elected, and the most conservative person in CA or NV ever! LOL

Nancy Pelosi's home district is part of San Francisco, their complaint is that she isn't far enough to the left. Here's the results from 2008:

Nancy Pelosi (Dem): 71.9%
Dana Walsh (Rep): 9.7%
Philip Z. Berg (Lib): 2.2%
Cindy Sheehan (Moonbat): 16.2%

Cindy Sheehan beat the Republican.

Harry Reid is a different story, expect a major challenge com 2010, and expect a repeat of what happened to Tom Daschle.

May his suffering bring him to repent of his ills deeds and may he with his last acts put his nation on a course away from militarism and tyranny. May his repentance be sincere and accepted by the Lord.

(I will always pray for people to repent and make amends. It is the Christian thing to do. Hell exists, and Kim Jong Il will probably end up there, but I hope he does not. I don't want anyone to go to Hell.)

Spencer was doing a fine job of documenting jihadist activity when it became clear that his target was a little broader than terrorist villains, taking the view that Islam is inherently bad. I would concur but for the stupidity of isolating and alienating any moderates and Muslim potential allies by the practice of doubting their sincerity and promoting the notion of their complicity. Even when someone begins insincerely, there is a lot to be said for taking uncertain allies, albeit guardedly, at face value. Persuasion is largely about demonstrating a confluence of opinions and exciting people to honour their word, never mind that they didn't start out meaning it. Lofty, lonely and pointless cynicism is a brilliant way to lose friends and diminish one's influence. Robert Spencer, given the work you were doing this was tolerable until you committed yourself to unholy alliances, and you lost crucial and worthy allies on the right and centre, because your compromise with hardline political extremists is not acceptable to most right-thinking people and destroys the integrity of our once unified agenda. It is not easy identifying and outlining the relationship between Muslims and the political and terrorist factions, but you were once, I thought, an expert on it, before you joined ranks with idiot ideologues. Now you blame the messenger. Calling this site a cesspool of lies and hate, a slander which leftists use to demonise views less extreme than your own, is about as intellectually corrupt as it gets. Perhaps reconsider your position and your comments to date on the rift. No promises but, all might be forgiven. It was a shame to have to lose you.

Right. Considering that the folks who run that place are Jooos.

re: #238 Desert Dog

Obama really jumped ahead in the caucus states...Iowa, Texas, etc because he was way more organized and motivated. He also did well enough in the states he lost because of the proportionality of the democrat primary system. McCain won so fast because the Republicans still use the all or nothing system.

What Obama did was create a grassroots machine with those groups you list above. To beat him, the Republicans should study and take notes on how Obama did it...Even if the economy is in the tank and people blame Obama, he will still perform well in an election because he has a system set up to do just that...

This is SOOO much the point. The only important thing really - in order to win an election in Chicago you have to get about 60% of the vote! It's still a democracy, sort of, and when the machine really messes up they kind of accept the judgment of the "people".

But this is entirely different because the stakes are so much higher.

I'm seriously thinking of enrolling as a poll-watcher, at the very least.

We have to go out there and figure out how this works, and fight it. Otherwise we are doomed! Did O really win NC? I doubt it, but it didn't matter...

I'm late to this thread and I haven't read all the comments.

I have a distant relative who is, was, a physician in Canada. After socialized medicine was "installed" in Canada he was fired. He was an ENT specialist. Not a high value MD I guess. He was, is, a man of the far left. He went back to the University for re-education in library science. He is as closed minded and as ignorant as they come. I have very little respect for today's moonbat Librarians.

Just my two cents.

Be all that as it may, and notwithstanding feuds, it is disheartening when debates ostensibly to show different views preemptively close off a differing view. Unless you believe that Spencer is an extremist or a Nazi - in which case the panelists had every right to withdraw (at any time, whether or not they knew in advance of his inclusion - cf. Spencer's withdrawal from the pK conference before or after alleged acceptance ). We do not actually know what Spenser would have said on "Beyond Stereotyping", but I would have liked to hear it - rather more that any CAIR -approved message.

Robert Spencer may not be a Nazi himself, but there's absolutely no doubt that he is an extremist, who associates with other hateful nutjobs and extremists like Pamela Geller, the genocide-spouting pinheads at Gates of Vienna, and the Vlaams Belang-BNP shills at Brussels Journal. The other panelists were perfectly justified in refusing to appear with Spencer.

455 Sacred Plants  Mon, Jul 13, 2009 1:08:46pm

From a strictly realpolitik point of view the problem with Spencers approach to Islam is that it is unprepared to accept the possibility of victory. At the point when the war is over, what would he do, divide Islam along the 38th parallel?
