Safari 4 New Version

There’s a new release of Safari 4 (4.0.2) featuring improved stability in the “Nitro” Javascript engine and “the latest compatibility and security fixes” according to Apple: Apple - Downloads - Application Updates - Safari.

I have been noticing some Javascript problems with the release version of Safari 4 - sometimes the Javascript engine just seems to shut down and give up, and you have to quit and relaunch Safari to bring it back to life. Hopefully, the new version will address this.

Now if only they would bring back that progress bar in the address line. It was a very handy way to see page loading progress, and I still keep looking up there expecting to see the blue progress bar filling in…

I'll have to upgrade mine. I'm using 4.0 (530.17) on XP and it does strange things from time to time. Gets really bogged down with videos while LGF is open. Crashes often and sometime just vanishes.

As a Mac user for the last 10 years I recall the bar but I actually prefer the loading detail at the bottom where they tell you how many of what is required has been loaded.

My current Mac is 5 years old or so and am thinking of getting the latest and greatest, however I must get approval from my local accountant. Guess who that is.

Fever Swamp update: World Nut Daily is undeterred in its effort to keep the Nirth certificate madness alive. The latest is the failure of its effort to get the White House to provide the name of the physician who attended little Barack Obama's birth.
They also can't find any medical personnel from the hospital who can remember Anne Dunham or the future president from 1961.
I am not making this up.

re: #28 Dr. Shalit

There was a lot of agitation and speculation by the media and within the Democratic party about Romney's bona fides relating to his birh. He was born in Mexico with a Mormon Polygamist commune. It was driving a lot of religious conservatives crazy. It didn't matter that he at one time was CEO of a major Auto Company and was very anti-union, they saw that commune word and Polygamy and thought he was some sort of Pagan Communist. His grandson still has to fight that legacy (I am a very lukewarm supporter of his though for other reasons).

Yes, it doesn't seem to have occurred to her that it's the content of his character [and his views on gun ownership], not the color of his skin that's the problem here.
She also made a crack about Palin supporters and how she's "glad she doesn't know any". The wise ass responses are just piling up in my head-hence the comment about trying to avoid setting off a major family feud.

Don't be a wise-ass, but do rebut her. Make it clear that she's wrong and offer proof. And send it around to other members of your family if you think that wise. Get yourself looking reasonable to them first so she looks bad if she attacks you. That way, if a feud erupts, she'll be the one excluded.

re: #115 Dark_Falcon

OK I was wrong. Here is what I have found out about succession to the Throne

Queen Elizabeth II does not have any power to change the succession law. She does not have absolute power meaning that she and her family must obey every common law and statue created by the British Parliament.

The line of succession to the British Throne is an ordered list of the people in line to succeed to the throne of the United Kingdom. The succession is regulated by the Act of Settlement 1701, which limits it to the heirs of the Electress Sophia of Hanover, as determined by male-preference primogeniture, religion, and legitimate birth:

- A person is always immediately followed in the succession by his or her own legitimate descendants (his or her "line"). Birth order and gender matter: older sons (and their lines) come before younger sons (and theirs); a person's sons (and their lines), irrespective of age, all come before his or her daughters (and their lines).

- The monarch must be a Protestant at time of accession, and enter into communion with the Church of England after accession.

- Anyone who is Roman Catholic, becomes Roman Catholic, or marries a Roman Catholic is permanently excluded from the succession.

- A person born to parents who are not married to each other at the time of birth is not included in the line of succession. The subsequent marriage of the parents does not alter this.

The Prince and John Holdren agree:

[Holdren] ... was saying that he would "bet" that the US would legislate to cut its carbon dioxide emissions by the beginning of December, making it possible to get "a degree of agreement that will surprise people" at a crucial international negotiating meeting which then opens in Copenhagen.
...
And only the night before, the Prince of Wales had warned in this year's Richard Dimbleby Lecture, as The Daily Telegraph yesterday prominently reported, that the world had only 96 months to avoid irreversible climate change, which he called "the living hell" that "now looms on the horizon".

Prof Holdren and – he makes clear – President Obama share the Prince's sense of urgency. He says it is already too late for the world to stop "dangerous" climate change and can now only hope to avoid "catastrophic, unmanageable change" where global warming runs out of control.

Sorry to take a bit to reply. I had to convince a 4 year-old that soap and water are not fatal.

I base the comparison on:

1. Neither one has ever had to worry about money, and both live palatially.

2. They were both raised with the expectation of a high position.

3. They are espousing environmental solutions or laws that will hurt others financially enormously, without doing any real damage to themselves.

4. If there was an election, Charles would lose to his son in a landslide.

At least, this is my opinion.

Oh Yeah -

Off the subject - finally got my Chief to pull the trigger on a new 'pute for the
Rental Office. We both compromised. He basically insisted on having a "DELL" logo on the "box." Every comparison at every price/spec level that I ran had DELL as competitive - yet not the most cost effective. I put him in back of the 11 year old "lashup" system on Friday. On Saturday he called me with the newest DELL ad. He was ready to go for a "Studio Slim" setup. Upsold him to a "Studio Mini Tower." Wanted to U/G to 8 Gb memory as it is a 64 bit system.
Answer was "NO" - No Problem, I will put 2Gb or more on it in "Ready-Boost" a/k/a "Afterburner" - it is a Vista System afterall. His biggest question was "Do We Get Windows 7 U/G for free?" - WE DO - and having so advised him, trigger was pulled.
Question - Anyone out there have a DELL Studio Mini-Tower System? How do you like it? Pray Tell advise. My choice was a Gateway DX-4300-03, and YES, el Jefe knows that TV is extra on the DELL - About $80 form Hauppague.
Comments PLEASE.

Lest we forget.

A spectre is haunting Europe -- the spectre of communism. All the powers of old Europe have entered into a holy alliance to exorcise this spectre: Pope and Tsar, Metternich and Guizot, French Radicals and German police-spies.

Where is the party in opposition that has not been decried as communistic by its opponents in power? Where is the opposition that has not hurled back the branding reproach of communism, against the more advanced opposition parties, as well as against its reactionary adversaries?

Two things result from this fact:

I. Communism is already acknowledged by all European powers to be itself a power.

II. It is high time that Communists should openly, in the face of the whole world, publish their views, their aims, their tendencies, and meet this nursery tale of the spectre of communism with a manifesto of the party itself.

To this end, Communists of various nationalities have assembled in London and sketched the following manifesto, to be published in the English, French, German, Italian, Flemish and Danish languages.

There is nothing in capitalism that compels you to compete in a market that you know will fail catastrophically. Neither greed nor incompetence is a fundamental of capitalism. Just common accessories.

Wall Street, at least should have known better, and arguably they did know better and did it anyway.

That's a good point. However, it seems the GOP was out in front talking regulation (for once), and Frank and Co were against it (for once). Very ironic. Some culpability can be hung on Wall Street, but the government set it up and threw the gas on the fire.

Making it worse is that Frank and Co are accepting any culpability in it and blaming Wall St in total. Scandalous if anybody can bring it forth.

Mark Steyn gets the funniest line of the weekend award:

"Capitalism and consumerism have brought the world to the brink of economic and environmental collapse, the Prince of Wales has warned. . . . And in a searing indictment on capitalist society, Charles said we can no longer afford consumerism and that the ‘age of convenience’ was over.

He then got in his limo and was driven to his other palace."

[Link: article.nationalreview.com...]

You dare to poke fun at your betters? Don't you realize that they HAVE to have those conveniences or they wouldn't have the time or energy to tell us how we CAN'T have those conveniences.

Sheesh.

Well, it happens that the very beautiful Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden is 194th in the line of succession to the British throne. Her brother Carl Phillip is actually ahead of her in the line to the British throne, since the UK observes male primogeniture while Sweden does not. Her exceedingly lovely sister, Princess Madeleine, is 195th. This comes about because their great-grandmother was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, through her youngest son, Arthur, Duke of Connaught (1850-1942). Arthur was 3rd in line of succession at the time of his birth, and his descendants are in the order of succession behind all the descendants of his older brothers.
There really are people who track all this, to 1500 places or more.

No, they didn't have to compete in that market.

There is nothing in capitalism that compels you to compete in a market that you know will fail catastrophically. Neither greed nor incompetence is a fundamental of capitalism. Just common accessories.

Fair enough.

/but I'm sure you'll agree that this is the first time anyone has detailed the government's role in the crisis, Barney Frank and Chris Dodd are somewhere cringing

Heh. No worries. Harry Truman was a donk I could've voted for. But I figure the donks would kick him out if he showed up now! Or a donk pol like him.

Being a "bit" younger, my favorite "donk" was Sen. Henry "Scoop" Jackson. Voted for him in the 1976 NJ "D" Primary under the "Nom De Guerre" of "Uncommited." Was the Joe Lieberman of his time as regards National Defense - to the extent that Pres. Nixon would have appointed him Sec. Def. if political arrangements regarding a successor could have been ironed out (they weren't and he wasn't).
Pres. Reagan always said that the "D" Party left him and NOT vice versa. I feel the same, even if MY tolerance level was higher than his.

ping, I know that's right. Likewise, Scoop Jackson.

On the flip side, I've seen any number of quotes from Goldwater that would get him hustled out of the GOP, were he to show up saying them today.

I contend it's the infamous Overton Window in action, among other things.

In 1976, I was the fellow that co-ordinated ads by Tony Schwartz (Daisy/Bomb 1964 ads for LBJ) with the NJ Carter Mondale Campaign. My appreciation for Sen. Barry started a bit later, older and wiser.

READ THE WHOLE FUCKING THING.

I stopped cold halfway down the page:

Nevertheless, in most advanced countries, the following will be pretty generally applicable.

1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.

2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.

3. Abolition of all rights of inheritance.

4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.

5. Centralization of credit in the banks of the state, by means of a national bank with state capital and an exclusive monopoly.

6. Centralization of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the state.

7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the state; the bringing into cultivation of waste lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.

8. Equal obligation of all to work. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.

9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of all the distinction between town and country by a more equable distribution of the populace over the country.

10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children's factory labor in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, etc.

Holy smoke. Talk about a piece of history.

Did you, and the people in the campaign, realize ahead of time how iconic the daisy spots would become? How long did they actually run? I've seen varying accounts.

In my case Safari's Java engine has not crashed since installing 4.02. With regards to Hulu content is blocked outside the U.S. as well as for those using VPN proxies when at public hot spots which makes it inaccessible for many.
