re: #3 MandyManners
Where is the party in opposition that has not been decried as communistic by its opponents in power? Where is the opposition that has not hurled back the branding reproach of communism, against the more advanced opposition parties, as well as against its reactionary adversaries?
Two things result from this fact:
I. Communism is already acknowledged by all European powers to be itself a power.
II. It is high time that Communists should openly, in the face of the whole world, publish their views, their aims, their tendencies, and meet this nursery tale of the spectre of communism with a manifesto of the party itself.
To this end, Communists of various nationalities have assembled in London and sketched the following manifesto, to be published in the English, French, German, Italian, Flemish and Danish languages.
SNIP
To the various Commies writing the aforementioned multi-lingual screed:
Take your murderous policies, shove them down your throats, and choke on them.

I think they're already dead, but you are welcome to the sentiment.
There's a joke I heard somewhere, that Marx and Engels come back to life, and see the suffering and the misery Communism caused. They look around, shrug, and say,
"It was just an idea."

Do you understand the philosophical divide between negative liberty and positive liberty? Do you know how that affects today?
Yes, I do:
Negative Liberty concerns rights that prevent the government from doing things to you, i.e. No searches without a warrant, protection from prior restraint of speech. The Bill of Rights is almost entirely concerned with Negative liberties.
Positive Liberty concerns rights that cause the government to give you things, such as unemployement assistance, or health care.
One key difference is that Negative Liberties prevent the growth of government power, while Positive Liberties encourage or require the growth of said power.
Do I pass inspection?

Looks like Obama needs another shiny object.
WASHINGTON -- President Obama has ordered his national security team to investigate reports that U.S. allies were responsible for the deaths of as many as 2,000 Taliban prisoners of war during the opening days of the war in Afghanistan.
Obama told CNN in an interview that aired Sunday that he doesn't know what how the U.S.-allied Northern Alliance behaved in November 2001, but he wants a full accounting before deciding how to move forward.
"I think that, you know, there are responsibilities that all nations have even in war," Obama said during an interview at the end of a six-day trip to Russia, Italy and Ghana.
"And if it appears that our conduct in some way supported violations of the laws of war, then I think that, you know, we have to know about that."

Looks like Obama needs another shiny object.
This is probably related to the Battle of Qala-i-Jangi in November 2001. Taliban prisoners staged an uprising in the ramshackle prison, butchering a CIA officer and a number of Afghan guards and gaining control of the prison armory. They resisted for five days. A few JDAMs and AC-130 strikes were used but the fanatics finally gave up only when the basement where they had been driven was flooded.
Lefties have always made atrocity claims, based on disproportionate force and the alleged execution of some of the prisoners. The Stalinist fossils at the East German communist party made a propaganda video about it within weeks, omitting to mention that the prisoners were very heavily armed. This has percolated through lefty and peace activist circles for some time and it appears that it has finally reached the White House.

Has anyone in the White House bothered to think about how addressing this now increases sentiment against our soldiers and provides propaganda for the Taliban?

I'd love to see Bach and Gounoud watching that. The intimacy that I think they imagined...with three or four thousand people.
As we say here in Texas, that's a "no shit Sherlock"...they'd both be incredibly amazed at what folks they'd probably never imagined in those numbers paying homage to their incredible music. Couldn't agree with ya more.

They don't care. Obama needs to placate the left and blame Bush. If that gets some people who he doesn't like killed, that does not bother him, thus proving yet again that he is indeed a Fucking Commie Bastard.
Also, those who claim disproportionate force should shut up. The Taliban in that prison surrendered on terms that they would not be killed or summarily executed. They then violated those terms. There was no reason for the Northern Alliance to risk its troops retaking the prison, and its would have been a betrayal of their men for the NA commanders to have put their men in greater danger for the sake of treacherous enemies.

We did Afghanistan the first time with two well funded CIA operatives and one military FAC, now we're at 38,000 troops, seasoned commanders are asking for more, and progress in the mountains and with the population is hard to come by.

That's it exactly: To the hard left, those things that keep anti-American forces from winning are evil and therefore they will try to call them war crimes. That the actual law does not support this is irrelevant, only the end matters to them and it justifies the means.

Hi ggt! Heller is an incredibly interesting decision, in that it defines the Second Amendment as providing for individual rights, then cautions us to remember that it only applies to the Federal Government (as the case was brought in the District of Columbia - which is administered by the Feds.)
But, if Heller is that narrowly defined, the idea of the Second Amendment being an individual right means absolutely nothing so long as the States are not bound by it. If that's the case (no pun intended), then the Draconian firearm restrictions in certain parts of the country (think Chicago) are perfectly Constitutional.
And if that's the case - at least to my mind - the entire Bill of Rights means nothing at all, so long as the States - who, by the way, signed on to the Constitution - can toss 'em all if they so desire.
What a conundrum for those of us who want limited Federal government, but don't want the rights (even keeping the 10th amendment in mind) turned completely over to State governments - such as California!

Hi there sub! That's an interesting analysis! But certain portions of the Bill of Rights have been brought to bear on the States; that is to say some of those rights that the Bill of Rights protects us from the Federal Government have also been extended to protect us from State governments. See, for example the 14th Amendment. I think Heller was based PURELY on Federal law PURELY because it was, literally, a Federal case.
But keep in mind that the Constitution enumerates certain specified powers to the Federal Government and "provides that powers that the Constitution does not delegate to the United States and does not prohibit the States from exercising, are "reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." [emphasis added realwest].
It is not inconceivable with the current court (or even if Sotomayor is confirmed, she'd just be replacing Souter anyway) that a case on the 2nd Amendment could come along wherein the SCOTUS might not say "NO to the Fed government regulating - e.g., Heller and prohibit the States from prohibiting, leaving it to the people.
Nonetheless, I'd much rather have a Constitutional Amendment on the Second Amendment, clarifying that individuals do indeed have the right to bear arms.

IIRC, the controversy over the Bill of Rights in which the Framers engaged, the (anti-federalists?) argued that it was redundent to guarantee pre-existing rights.

"Mandated employee benefit" works well for me. That would fall into the category of Positive Liberties as I defined them. That would not, in and of itself, make it a bad thing, however. But it does expand government power, and that is seldom a good thing.
Great. That works for me, too.
Not sure I see how it "expands government power," though. Power over who? Isn't the government just making the transaction between the parties?

Down ding. If he were doing the best job he could, he would not be trying to spend so much money all at once. Regardless of the direction of his policies, his spending is reckless and indefensible.
Hi Dark_Falcon - someone posted out here, towards the end of last week, that with the actions taken so far by Obama and the Dems, the Federal government has pretty well taken over the Automobile industry, the Banking industry, the Financial Services Industry, soon to be the Energy (Utilities) industry and perhaps the HealthCare industry which, combined, equals approximately 39% of GNP. From HIS socialist perspective it was or will be money well spent.

The government is mandating the transaction. The Government can also expand the length of time an employer has to provide benefits. The government's ability to mandate an employer's expenditure is a power over his property. Again, that does not make it wrong, but it is government power.

Hi PvtBinJammin! Only glanced through the other posts, but it looks - to me- like you've hit upon it. It's the best solution...to buy back - or replace - the object of her bad decision would only reinforce the idea that she could make the same - or similar - bad decision again. Some might say that the economic engine is broken, to the point of needing rebuilding.
Some might say that the stud swimmer has already had his arms cut off, by a bunch of crooks. Do we pay for the stud swimmer's rehab, or tell him to suck it up and quit whining?
Just another perspective.

Hey Syrah - that is the million dollar (or these days, I guess Trillion dollar question) and my money's on the military pulling a coup. I read somewhere that the NORK military, although treated better than the NORK civilians in terms of food, clothing and shelter, has been getting really restless because their RELATIVES are still starving to death - and at rather alarming rates.
Hope that tomorrow will be better for your children even if not for you is often enough to keep revolution at bay.
When the population, particularly those with the power to do something (the military) no longer believe that tomorrow holds any hope for their children, then they are suddenly free to act because the realize that they have nothing left to lose. It is a Ceauşescu moment, when the people cut the state symbol out of their nations flag and rise up.
It could happen in North Korea.

real, and you are imagining this as a fair-play system, which of course it will never be. Government bureaucrats will have their hooks firmly set into GM and Chrysler, and it creates a "competition" disadvantage for Ford that is unimaginable.
Sorry JohnAdams, I have to disagree with that. I think that with government control (the US is gonna own something like 60% of the stock in the New General Motors) Ford will have a competitive advantage - the Government will NO DOUBT have layers and layers of bureaucracy piled up just on WHO to pick to general design for certain lines of vehicles.
And honestly, would you buy a car from someone who CHANGED from a Jeep to a Hummer?!?

Real - my first ride was a '57 Chevy BelAir convertable. Bought it for $500 in 1964. I felt very lucky I was able to use it to get $300 trade-in value on a '66 GTO in 1969. The GTO was fire engine red, red bucket seats, 389 with a 4 speed tranny. I special ordered Michelin steel belted radial tires from France for it. With those tires I could make a right or left hand 90 degree turn at an intersection doing 55 mph and never break traction. With the wide-track and steel belted tires that GTO was glued to the road. Sure wish I had either car today

"Whattya offerin?"

My GTO had a sad ending. I was off elk hunting and my new wife pulled out at an intersection and had the front end taken off. She was petrified and wanted to get it repaired while I was gone. The insurance company wound up paying to put a '67 GTO front end on it. The car was never the same. And, 38 years later, I still have the same wife!

I just think "we" the people lose a LOT when the discourse is either one sided, or non-existant. I think having open, honest discussions about ideas, is a BIG part of what our Democracy is based on. And ALL of us loose by not being able to have a civililized discussion about where we want our country to go. And I think it is a SHAME that we cannot be "civilized" enough to have friendly discussions on important matters. And I don't understand it, OR how to fix it.

There is also the possibility the Kim Jong-Il, believing in his own immortality, did something incredibly dumb while touring the facilities and no one dared tell their god-emperor that he was risking his life. Being a god-king has some drawbacks, particularly if the yes-men surrounding you fear for their lives if they were to inadvertently displease you.

Well, maybe not. But I made an exception in this case for two reasons:
1. Taibbi's point is that no "reliable" business site has written a true dissection of what G-S has done to contribute to the current mess.
2. Taibbi's article has been out long enough that "reliable" sources from Time to Atlantic Monthly and dozens more have written scathing critiques of his critique. And he's responded to theirs. In a nutshell, nobody has questioned Taibbi's facts, only his "tone"...and they say he's "singling out" Goldman-Sachs for something "others are also guilty of." His response to that particular charge is classic, I think, though profane.
He's a muckraker by trade, but I learned a lot from his data. And when somebody shows his data is wrong, I'll amend my opinion of his pieces. Nothing to lose by reading them, I'd say.

1. Ed, would you mind pointing me to one or few of those critiques of Taibbi? I wouldn't ask if I hadn't googled "Taibbi Goldman Sachs" and got little but huzzahs. Thanks in advance.
2. Other than the record of GS alumni in government, I didn't see anything in the piece that I'd call "data" in the sense that I could independently verify it.
3. When there's a systemic breakdown, everybody has an excuse and everybody wants a scapegoat. I tend to view GS kind of like the traditionsl Damn Yankees: hated because they're the clear best at what everybody else is trying to do.
4. Good for Taibbi for noting the Democrat connection. However, he didn't note the Democrats' political role in creating & protecting the housing bubble (or the GOP's failure to arrest it)--and in the possible carbon-credit bubble. (IMO the residue of the Internet bubble is a wired nation. I'm not sure that the housing bubble will leave anything but a lot of repossessed houses and dispossessed people.)

It's too bad this came up so late. I'm trying to regularize my schedule and have slipped again. Hopefully there will be other occasions for constructive discussions of this with you and Ice and others. Ideally we will learn as much when we don't completely agree as when we validate each other.
Good night.

2. Other than the record of GS alumni in government, I didn't see anything in the piece that I'd call "data" in the sense that I could independently verify it.
My fault; I linked to the RS article, but ironically RS still hasn't made the full text available online. A PDF of the complete article is here:
[Link: zerohedge.blogspot.com...]
The RS excerpts do leave out a lot of the data.

1. Ed, would you mind pointing me to one or few of those critiques of Taibbi? I wouldn't ask if I hadn't googled "Taibbi Goldman Sachs" and got little but huzzahs. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the kind response, jvic. I'll get you those links tomorrow; Time and Atlantic are the two I remember offhand. Getting late here. Good nite...

Satriani, like Vai, Malmsteen, Gilbert, Buckhead et al is insanely talented and largely unlistenable. I defy you to get through a whole album in one sitting. Angus Young shouldn't even be called a guitarist in light of these guys and yet Back In Black can be listened to song for song for the moment "drop the needle".
I spent a fair amount of my guitar years playing like (or trying to) Vai etc. Vernon Reid who like Van Halen got the shred/song ratio correct freed my fingers up to play what I was hearing in my head and not what expected. Even I can't get through War and Peace by Vai. I get it, you're phenomenal, now shut up.

re: #302 jvic
jvic, here are the two most prominent critiques I've seen of Taibbi's infamous article: one is in Time's business section, the other is by Megan McArdle in Atlantic.
It's very instructive to read Taibbi's ongoing replies to the ongoing criticism, on his blog at TrueSlant.
I'll post other links as I run across them. Look forward to hearing your thoughts on this.

Also, this evaluation of Taibbi's Rolling Stone piece on Reuters Blogs. Pull quote:
I don’t agree with all of Taibbi’s article, but I’m surprised at how much of it I do agree with...
And a piece from correntewire.
Please pass along any others you come across, and I'll do the same. Thanks!

re: #307 ShanghaiEd
Thanks for the link to the full article, Ice. The additional material makes a difference. Ed, thanks for the links.
I have nothing fundamentally new to add to my previous post. Below, in no particular order, are random thoughts.
1. Basically, I'm with McArdle. She alludes to systemic failure:
But financial meltdowns don't offer villains, for the simple reason that no one person or even one group is powerful enough to take down a whole system.
So did my post.
2. Back at the time, I was completely taken in by the attacks on Brooksley Born. Heeding her would have averted much of the current mess. Wall Street and the nation owe her apology and restitution (via appointment to cushy "advisory panels", board memberships, speaking fees, and the like). Her recent Profiles in Courage Award is a step in the right direction, but it is only a first step. To their shame, the government and the Street have yet to be heard from afaik.
3. Taibbi creates his portrait of GS as ubervillain by leaving things out: the Hunt brothers' attempted corner on silver and other corners, Salamon's illegalities with US debt securities, the junk-bond orgy of the 1980s, Enron, LTCM, the 1990s debt crises, etc.
4. The RS piece could be easily upgraded by describing GS as an illustration--as the most visible example, even--of how the systemic dysfunction perpetuates itself. By making the article all about Goldman, Taibbi substitutes sensationalism for insight.
5. Taibbi's blog:
...a lot of people have been writing me asking me to respond to Megan McArdle’s bizarre freakout on the Atlantic website, where she lambasted my Goldman piece in curiously discombobulated fashion and then apparently spent the next couple of days jamming her feet in her mouth in the comments section...
It's hard to give a coherent explanation of why something is incoherent. Taibbi's editor should have said something like "Promising concept, but start over." For better and worse, Rolling Stone is not Foreign Affairs.
Sadly, Taibbi's piece is less than the sum of its parts.
***
I am not absolving Goldman Sachs. My opinion of them has materially worsened after reading Taibbi.
But Taibbi is not the Gibbon who is needed to chronicle this breakdown of the financial system.
