Michael Yon is with the real anti-jihad activists (aka, the US and British military) in Afghanistan, and has another must-read report filled with photographs of a very productive lizard hunt: Searching for Kuchi & Finding Lizards.

I support the troops in Afghanistan. This is one of the few things Obama has done that I support -- increase pressure on the Taliban.

Funny how the Left in general voted for Obama for the specific reason that he was anti-war -- and what'd they get out of it? More war! An escalation!

Oh, the irony.

And even with the problems in Afghanistan with the ongoing al Qaeda presence and Taliban menace allowing al Qaeda to use it as a safe haven/breeding ground for further terror plots against the US, Obama's under pressure from the left to cut and run at the earliest possible moment.

Too bad they can't eat the lizards. There's a lot of food there going to waste.

The boy said “it’s unlawful to touch them,” and so he used the sack to catch lizards and handle eggs. I asked if they eat the lizards, but that, too, is unlawful. “Unlawful” means that Mohammed did not specifically authorize to eat the lizards, so they can’t eat them. Those lizards could have fed an entire village of Costa Ricans.

Ooops -- up to 5,525 now.

Let's see...
Took 12 minutes to go from 5,483 to 5,525.
That's 43 new blogs in 12 minutes
12 x 5 = 60 = 1 hour
43 x 5 = 215

So, that's 215 new blogs/hour.

Round that down to 200/hour for easy calculation.

So in 5 hours, I'll have 1,000 new links

25 hours = 5,000 new links.

Hence, at this rate, I'll hit 10,000 in exactly one day!

Extra-super-delicious irony, served up steaming on a platter!

Yeah - ironic, and annoying.

I remember way back six months or so ago when the "News Hour" on PBS would sign off by showing the names of service men and women killed in Iraq. Somehow they stopped that little feature after January 20th.

Have our service people stopped dying?

Or maybe it's some new metaphysical reality, like the ones who've died since that Magic Day are somehow "less dead" than those who were "killed in Bush's war"

Propaganda really annoys me.

Especially when it's done so poorly.

And so lightly fobbed off as "The News"

*SPIT*

Those dogs are amazing. They're like bears.

A friend of mine had stopped for an Humanitarian Aid event in a village they had worked in before, and was standing guard. A small dog came up in front of him and yapped at him for a while. He shooed the dog away a few times, and it left after he made a menacing gesture. Then one of those "polar bears" came up from behind and bit him on the knee. Apparently the dog felt he had made his point, and simply walked away. Fortunately for my friend, his kneepad stopped the dogs jaws from closing, and he wound up with just a tiny break in the skin--no rabies, no shots req'd, etc (they pretty much were familiar with the dog).
A few days later I ran into an adorable little puppy, just old enough to wrestle with my hand and chew ineffectively on my thumb. I took a picture of this little pup, and now I show that picture every time my friend launches into his monster dog attack story.

Okay, speaking of Alligator, this story just made me laugh. It reads like an Erskine Caldwell novel:

Barack Obama effect ends white rule in Deep South town

This paragraph slays me:

Mr Brown was the first black man ever to stand for Mayor of Alligator and it took Mr Obama’s election to galvanise him into action. “Obama was a major influence on everybody,” he said, almost drowned out by the chirping of crickets in the sweltering afternoon heat.

Military of Lithuania

Since the summer of 2005 Lithuania has been part of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan (ISAF), leading a Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in the town of Chaghcharan in the province of Ghor. Currently, there are 150 soldiers stationed in Ghor. The PRT includes personnel from Denmark, Iceland and USA. There are also special operation forces from the "Aitvaras" unit in Afghanistan. They are placed in Kandahar province. Their number will be increase in 2009.

That is funny!
I found this part funny, too:

In a shock result in Alligator (population 220), Tommie “Tomaso” Brown, 38, defeated Robert Fava, the mayor since 1979, owner of the general store and once his opponent’s boss, by 37 votes to 27.

Obama Rewrites the Cold War
The President has a duty to stand up to the lies of our enemies.
By LIZ CHENEY

There are two different versions of the story of the end of the Cold War: the Russian version, and the truth. President Barack Obama endorsed the Russian version in Moscow last week.

Speaking to a group of students, our president explained it this way: "The American and Soviet armies were still massed in Europe, trained and ready to fight. The ideological trenches of the last century were roughly in place. Competition in everything from astrophysics to athletics was treated as a zero-sum game. If one person won, then the other person had to lose. And then within a few short years, the world as it was ceased to be. Make no mistake: This change did not come from any one nation. The Cold War reached a conclusion because of the actions of many nations over many years, and because the people of Russia and Eastern Europe stood up and decided that its end would be peaceful."

The truth, of course, is that the Soviets ran a brutal, authoritarian regime. The KGB killed their opponents or dragged them off to the Gulag. There was no free press, no freedom of speech, no freedom of worship, no freedom of any kind. The basis of the Cold War was not "competition in astrophysics and athletics." It was a global battle between tyranny and freedom. The Soviet "sphere of influence" was delineated by walls and barbed wire and tanks and secret police to prevent people from escaping. America was an unmatched force for good in the world during the Cold War. The Soviets were not. The Cold War ended not because the Soviets decided it should but because they were no match for the forces of freedom and the commitment of free nations to defend liberty and defeat Communism.

It is irresponsible for an American president to go to Moscow and tell a room full of young Russians less than the truth about how the Cold War ended. One wonders whether this was just an attempt to push "reset" -- or maybe to curry favor. Perhaps, most concerning of all, Mr. Obama believes what he said.

Mr. Obama's method for pushing reset around the world is becoming clearer with each foreign trip. He proclaims moral equivalence between the U.S. and our adversaries, he readily accepts a false historical narrative, and he refuses to stand up against anti-American lies. ..

Liz rips O a new one.

Asked at a NATO meeting in France in April whether he believed in American exceptionalism, the president said, "I believe in American Exceptionalism just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism." In other words, not so much.

The Obama administration does seem to believe in another kind of exceptionalism -- Obama exceptionalism. "We have the best brand on Earth: the Obama brand," one Obama handler has said. What they don't seem to realize is that once you're president, your brand is America, and the American people expect you to defend us against lies, not embrace or ignore them. We also expect you to know your history.

I would not be so quick to label the US military "anti-jihad."

Feel free to read about what Keith Dayton is doing over in "Palestine." The US army is training a fighting force ostensibly to defend the "Palestinian Territories," but which is being trained to also attack Israel.

As far as Iraq goes; we fight jihadists with one hand, and train the Iraqi security force with the other. I wonder if this training will produce a fighting force committed to justice and securing freedom, or rather will be trained to later defend a theocracy. We shall see.

I love the US military, but it is the politicians who are at fault here.

The Japanese have a habit of under-rating the designations of their warships. This, for example, is the new "helicopter destroyer" Hyuga. The designation refers to its ability to carry and operate helicopters, not its ability to destroy them (though it can also do that if some aggressor's choppers happen to get within range).
In any case, this vessel's considerable size, starboard island super-structure, and flat deck would suggest an aircraft carrier to even the most uninformed observer but a "destroyer" it remains for political reasons.

Hurray! Climate Change Has Been Prevented!

The G8 last week decreed that the governments of the world were going to work real hard to prevent the global temperature from rising more than 2° C.

When King Canute of lore wanted to teach his citizens a lesson, he set his throne by the seashore and commanded the tides to roll out. Canute's spirit was back in business this week at the G-8 summit in Italy, where the assembled leaders declared that the world's temperature shall not rise: "We recognize the scientific view that the increase in global average temperature above pre-industrial levels ought not to exceed 2 degrees [Celsius]," or 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, said the summit declaration.

Hmm. Pre-industrial levels. Well let us have a look at pre-industrial levels. Fortunately I have a chart.

From the chart we see that the current global temperature is about 12° C and in pre-industrial times it was as high as 22° C. So to rise no more than 2° C above the pre-industrial era all we have to do is keep the global temperatures below 24° C. Since according to the chart global temperatures have never risen above 22° C - problem solved.

This is wonderful news. No carbon taxing scheme will be required. Quick - some one tell Congress before Cap and Trade passes.

Scientifically ignorant politicians dictating science for political ends.

Afghanistan is a Persian country, certainly not Arab, and Islam rides uneasily, like a long-established but still foreign and not-so-welcome power.
Don't get me wrong--Islam is the official religion, the Constitution is steeped in it, the call to prayer is the only thing you can count on 365 days a year, etc... But without even bothering yourself too greatly, you can find stupas and buddhas to this day.

I was walking down a street in Hong Kong one time aways back and a pigeon fell off the roof of a very high building and landed on the sidewalk in front of a "restaurant" some old guy wearing an apron jumped out and grabbed the bird and took it inside. No matter how many times me and my buddies went to Hong Kong, we steered clear of any Chinese restaurant. No telling what killed that bird.

You go to Hong Kong and don't eat Chinese food? Are you insane?

You can imagine it means whatever you like, which I suppose is the charm of these political pseudo scientific statements. From the chart you provided, you can see that the fluctuation in Global average temperature has been less than +/- 1 C.

they did not define the term "pre-industrial" era, or over what period of time from the undefined pre-industural era the reference temperature would be defined. Just so much hot air from the politicians.

Well, yes, the Taliban destroyed the Buddhas of Bamiyan, and have engaged in orgies of destruction and defilement of anything not according to their tiny and dark world-view. The point here is that the Taliban are CORRECT that the country is not "sufficiently Islamic" for the fanatics. Why do you think they blow things up? Afghanistan has a deeply-rooted non-Islamic culture (several, to be more precise).
I know I don't need to explain these facts to you, I just want you to understand the point I am making.

Throw in some Chamisa and it could be northern NM... including the buildings.

I am from NM (mostly) and I am in Afghanistan now. It is hard to be homesick when I wake up everyday and see my hometown (minus the town).

I'm pretty sure they intended pre industrial levels to mean the 1000 years or so proceeding, not back to prehistoric times.

here's a NOAA

chart.

That's funny ... they do know the Earth's climate has undergone at least a couple of major shifts since written history, right?

So are seagulls.

I'm not quite sure where the crack about Costa Ricans comes from, though. You might as well say the lizards could have fed an entire village of Danes. It's accurate, strictly speaking, but they don't eat lizards in Denmark, either (to the best of my knowledge).
