'Holocaust Revisionist' Routed in Reston Election
A last-minute write-in campaign to prevent a self-described Holocaust revisionist from serving on a civic body in Reston has succeeded with a landside, the organization's former president said today.
Ken Meyercord, who had been running unopposed for an at-large seat on the Reston Citizens Association's 13-member volunteer board, received only 23 votes after his provocative views on Jews created a backlash.
Colin Mills, the write-in candidate for the at-large position on the board, received 1,157 votes, according to Mike Corrigan, the civic association's former president and a member of the election committee.
The turnout for the election, which was held Saturday and Sunday the Reston Festival at Reston Town Center, was so heavy that elections committee members had to photocopy additional ballots.

The old dog (not that old, at 10) has been diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy which affects her ability to control her hind quarters. It is a breakdown of the spinal cord and while she will progressively lose control of function she also loses feeling, so there is no pain. However, she has also been diagnosed with a malignant tumour in her left rear leg that for $300 can be removed (?) it just depends on which condition will win the "race" for her life. Ahhh dear.

Ahhh dear.

There is a predicted - and has come to pass - cooling effect caused by changing ocean currents which was caused by melting at the poles.
Global warming is a misnomer because, making one part of the Earth hot can make another cold. I know that seems completely counter intuitive, but it is the same principle ultimately as a heat pump. Your refrigerator gets really hot (in the back) to cool it's inside.
Thermodynamics is not something that Al Gore made up.

Dinner with Obama, a parable (part 1)
Once upon a time, I was invited to the White House for a private dinner with the President. I am a respected businessman, with a factory that produces memory chips for computers and portable electronics. There was some talk that my industry was being scrutinized by the administration, but I paid it no mind. I live in a free country. There's nothing that the government can do to me if I've broken no laws. My wealth was earned honestly, and an invitation to dinner with an American President is an honor.
I checked my coat, was greeted by the Chief of Staff, and joined the President in a yellow dining room. We sat across from each other at a table draped in white linen. The Great Seal was embossed on the china. Uniformed staff served our dinner.
The meal was served, and I was startled when my waiter suddenly reached out, plucked a dinner roll off my plate, and began nibbling it as he walked back to the kitchen.
"Sorry about that," said the President. "Andrew is very hungry."
"I don't appreciate..." I began, but as I looked into the calm brown eyes across from me, I felt immediately guilty and petty. It was just a dinner roll. "Of course," I concluded, and reached for my glass. Before I could, however, another waiter reached forward, took the glass away and swallowed the wine in a single gulp.
"And his brother Eric is very thirsty." said the President.
I didn't say anything. The President is testing my compassion, I thought. I will play along. I don't want to seem unkind.
My plate was whisked away before I had tasted a bite.
"Eric's children are also quite hungry."
With a lurch, I crashed to the floor. My chair had been pulled out from under me. I stood, brushing myself off angrily, and watched as it was carried from the room.
"And their grandmother can't stand for long."
I excused myself, smiling outwardly, but inside feeling like a fool. Obviously I had been invited to the White House to be sport for some game. I reached for my coat, to find that it had been taken. I turned back to the President.
"Their grandfather doesn't like the cold."
I wanted to shout- that was my coat! But again, I looked at the placid smiling face of my host and decided I was being a poor sport... I spread my hands helplessly and chuckled. Then I felt my hip pocket and realized my wallet was gone. I excused myself and walked to a phone on an elegant side table. I learned shortly that my credit cards had been maxed out, my bank accounts emptied, my retirement and equity portfolios had vanished, and my wife had been thrown out of our home. Apparently, the waiters and their families were moving in. The President hadn't moved or spoken as I learned all this, but finally I lowered the phone into its cradle and turned to face him.
"Andrew's whole family has made bad financial decisions. They haven't planned for retirement, and they need a house... They recently defaulted on a subprime mortgage. I told them they could have your home. They need it more than you do."
My hands were shaking.. I felt faint. I stumbled back to the table and knelt on the floor. The President cheerfully cut his meat, ate his steak and drank his wine. I lowered my eyes and stared at the small grey circles on the tablecloth that were water drops.
"By the way," He added, "I have just signed an Executive Order nationalizing your factories. I'm firing you as head of your business. I'll be operating the firm now for the benefit of all mankind. There's a whole bunch of Erics and Andrews out there and they can't come to you for jobs groveling like beggars."

Dinner with the Obama (part 2)
I looked up. The President dropped his spoon into the empty ramekin which had been his creme brulee. He drained the last drops of his wine. As the table was cleared, he lit a cigarette and leaned back in his chair. He stared at me. I clung to the edge of the table as if were a ledge and I were a man hanging over an abyss. I thought of the years behind me, of the life I had lived. The life I had earned with a lifetime of work, risk and struggle. Why was I punished? How had I allowed it to be taken? What game had I played and lost? I looked across the table and noticed with some surprise that there was no game board between us.
What had I done wrong?
As if answering the unspoken thought, the President suddenly cocked his head, locked his empty eyes to mine, and bared a million teeth, chuckling wryly as he folded his hands.
"You should have stopped me at the dinner roll," he said.

Secret CIA Program Targeted Senior Al-Qaeda Leadership
The secret CIA program that was withheld from Congress was designed to find and capture or kill senior al-Qaeda leadership at close range rather than through air strikes, government officials said.
Congress probes agency's failure to report a secret counterterrorism program. The now canceled counterterrorism intelligence program has stirred controversy among legislators demanding to know what it entailed and why it was kept secret from Congress for eight years after going into the planning stages shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

I hated those cameras at first, but it has worked...it was typical to be going 75-80 in a 55 here...in the 65-75 mph areas...forget it...guys would fly by going 90-100, easy. re: #217 Gus 802
I've two words for the congressional critics: screw them.
Their claim that they weren't briefed on this program is starting to flake around the edges. Former CIA chief Hayden said over the weekend that he briefed the appropriate members on several occasions, in detail, and nothing we held back. Like Pelosi and her tales of not being briefed about waterboarding when she had been, this story will fall apart once briefing minutes are examined, along with their roll calls.
This looks like an attempt to create a distraction from the dismal, unblinking failure of the Administration's economic efforts to have any perceivable effect. It may also be related to the sudden upsurge in bombings on the streets of Iraq that directly correlates with the drawdown of US military patrols prior to our anticipated pullout. Congress and the White House don't want people focusing on these embarrassing policy failures; a few headlines about Satan...er, I mean Dick Cheney, and his impish demon George Bush would be much more to their liking, especially with important votes on cap & trade and nationalized health care looming.
Cap & trade is in trouble in the Senate. Barbara Boxer has the lead on steering it through, and originally said her committee would vote on a draft resolution by the end of this month. Over the weekend, she quietly announced that the first vote on the measure had been postponed - until late September. At the earliest. She's having a very hard time roping in support from Democratic Senators from coal, oil and gas producing states, and from those whose states generate most of their electricity from coal; the staggering job losses and rises in energy costs that come with the bill are simply not going to garner enough support for passage, so she needs a couple more months of arm twisting before she will send it up for a committee vote. Not a good sign for Boxer or C&T. But an excellent indication of what the Administration and Congress don't want you thinking too hard about, and an excellent reason to apply as much heat as possible to your representatives to drive a stake through this bill's heart.

When I was a kid, I had a TransAm with a 455 H.O. On a night trip to a nearby state where my fiance lived, I saw a pair of taillights flash on an overpass. I immediately realized that it had to be a cop and since I was driving like a greyhound in heat (which is about 125 mph), I slammed on the brakes, skidded through the overpass and was truly grateful when he wrote me up for "only" 85 mph.
I was pulled over after driving a insane speed in my new 68 Charger RT. I told the cop I had no excuse, just back from Nam and saw a stretch of empty rode and opened it up. We spent a few minutes swapping military stories and he sent me off telling me to be more careful.
That could never happen today with dash cams and the rest.

Also, a spate of very bad things happening to cops during traffic stops has changed the protocol. In the past, they pulled you over, sized things up and then decided whether to make it official and call in your license, etc. Now, the protocol is to call in the instant you make the decision to pull someone over and provide a description of the car and it's license plate number. Makes follow up a whole lot easier in cases where things go bad for the primary officer, but it pretty much eliminates the chance of getting off with only a warning. At best, you'll still get a ticket, but for some lesser offense.

German blows hands off trying 'molecular gastronomy'
July 14, 2009 - 6:08AM
An experimental German cook accidentally blew off both his hands attempting to concoct a "molecular gastronomy" dish with liquid nitrogen, a newspaper report said on Monday.
The 24-year-old man from Stahnsdorf near Berlin somehow obtained some of the dangerous chemical and was poised to try out a new recipe from the school of molecular cooking, which aims to apply scientific processes to gastronomy.
There was an "enormous explosion," according to the Berliner Morgenpost daily.
The man lost one hand in the explosion and the other was so badly injured it had to be amputated.
The man, who was staying at his girlfriend's mother's house, was rushed to hospital where his condition was described as life-threatening. He is on artifical respiration.
He claimed he was trying to fill a gas lighter, but his girlfriend said he was trying to empty a canister of liquid nitrogen.
"Criminal investigators secured the remains of a nitrogen flask, bits of clothing, flesh and bits of skin," the paper said.

re: #270 SixDegrees
True!
It's another ploy along the lines of "blaming Bush." This time it looks like they're trying to bring it back to create a distraction from other events and to re-kindle any remaining anti-Bush sentiment. The media of course will gladly play along. Just yesterday there was a pathetic headline at the All Barrack Channel News (ABCNews) site claiming something to the effect of "will Bush's ghosts hamper Obama's term."
Sickening.

It's more difficult; see my post above. Once a stop is called in, the officer is under more pressure to justify it. It's still possible to get waved off, but it's a lot less likely than it used to be.

Something about this story doesn't sound quite right. Liquid nitrogen requires care, but it isn't all that dangerous as long as you're semi-awake when handling it. Sounds like it may have been grossly mishandled, or the Dewar flask it was in was defective. Or, more simply, that a Dewar wasn't used and Mr. Genius stored it in something that isn't designed to hold liquid nitrogen - like a pop bottle or lunch thermos or something. Even then, blowing your hands off took some serious work and imagination.

Waiver once you prove a defect is fixed is pretty common, as long as it isn't an imminent safety hazard. In fact, around here it's written right into the law what qualifies - loud mufflers, cracked windshields, a single broken headlight or taillight, and a handful of other minor problems.

As long as you're polite, you've got a chance.
Last time I was stopped, when the officer rolled up and asked me if I knew what he stopped me for, I just admitted that I was going a little quick. What are you gonna say ? Gee, I don't know, officer, is it because when you hit 100 tickets, you get a free dozen of doughnuts ?
He knows why he stopped you. Most of the time you know why he stopped you. I've gotten off with a few warnings that way.

HOW TO DRIVE IN LOS ANGELES
1. You must first learn to pronounce the city name, it is L. A.
2. The morning rush hour is from 5:00 a.m. to noon. The evening rush hour is from noon to 7:00 p.m. Friday's rush hour starts on Thursday morning.
3. The minimum acceptable speed on most freeways is 85 mph. On the 105 or 110, your speed is expected to match the highway number. Anything less is considered 'Wussy.'
4. Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. L A has its own version of traffic rules. For example, cars/trucks with the loudest muffler go first at a four-way stop; the trucks with the biggest tires go second.
However, in Malibu , SUV-driving, cellphone-talking moms ALWAYS have the right of way.
5. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear ended, cussed out, and possibly shot.
6. Never honk at anyone. Ever. Seriously. It's another offense that can get you shot.
7. Road construction is permanent and continuous in all of L A and Orange counties. Detour barrels are moved around for your entertainment pleasure during the middle of the night to make the next day's driving a bit more exciting.
8. Watch carefully for road hazards such as drunks, skunks, dogs, cats, barrels, cones, celebs, rubber-neckers, shredded tires, cell-phoners, deer and other road kill, and the coyotes feeding on any of these items.
9. Mapquest does not work here -- none of the roads are where they say they are or go where they say they do and all the freeway off and on ramps are moved each night.
10. If someone actually has their turn signal on, wave them to the shoulder immediately to let them know it has been 'accidentally activated.'
11. If you are in the left lane and only driving 70 in a 55-65mph zone, you are considered a road hazard and will be 'flipped off' accordingly.
If you return the flip, you'll be shot.
12. Do not try to estimate travel time -- just leave Monday afternoon for Tuesday appointments, by noon Thursday for Friday and right after church on Sunday for anything on Monday morning.
And finally 'Why is the L.A.Freeway called the '405'?
Because no matter where you are going, it takes 4 or 5 hours to get there.
I used to visit L.A. fairly often before my son left.
I'll actually miss it.

When I told a Studebaker friend that is a state trooper the story, he suggested he'd be in for the reaming of his life if he lets someone go that was way, way over the speed limit today. Too much info on the dashcam to ignore I guess. In my defense, I did slow down to the limit after blowing past his parked cruiser, but he must have known I was flying.

Germany....11/76-6/79...most of the quotes came from the live titties and beer versions with fz and skinny little terry ted bozio. Definitely in Paris, Stutgart and outside of Kaiserslaughtern ( K-Town )
