When Galaxies Collide

Science • Views: 4,886

The Hubble Space Telescope isn’t the only orbiting observatory sending back incredible images from the depths of space; here’s a picture generated by the Chandra X-ray Observatory combined with optical imagery: a group of colliding galaxies known as “Stephan’s Quintet.”

Credits: X-ray: NASA/CXC/CfA/E. O’Sullivan Optical: Canada-France-Hawaii-Telescope/Coelum

This beautiful image gives a new look at Stephan’s Quintet, a compact group of galaxies discovered about 130 years ago and located about 280 million light years from Earth. The curved, light blue ridge running down the center of the image shows X-ray data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Four of the galaxies in the group are visible in the optical image (yellow, red, white and blue) from the Canada-France- Hawaii Telescope. A labeled version identifies these galaxies (NGC 7317, NGC 7318a, NGC 7318b and NGC 7319) as well as a prominent foreground galaxy (NGC 7320) that is not a member of the group. The galaxy NGC 7318b is passing through the core of galaxies at almost 2 million miles per hour, and is thought to be causing the ridge of X- ray emission by generating a shock wave that heats the gas. …

Stephan’s Quintet provides a rare opportunity to observe a galaxy group in the process of evolving from an X-ray faint system dominated by spiral galaxies to a more developed system dominated by elliptical galaxies and bright X-ray emission. Being able to witness the dramatic effect of collisions in causing this evolution is important for increasing our understanding of the origins of the hot, X-ray bright halos of gas in groups of galaxies.

Stephan’s Quintet shows an additional sign of complex interactions in the past, notably the long tails visible in the optical image. These features were probably caused by one or more passages through the galaxy group by NGC 7317.

Recently, there was an article I saw, probably from Drudge somewhere, that discussed some of the oldest parts of the universe that had just been photographed. The article mentioned that they were somewhere near 12 or 13 billion light years away from us.

How did we get somewhere that is 12 or 13 billion light years away from something that is around 13.5 billion years old if everything came from the same big bang? We clearly didn't travel that distance at the speed of light. I mean, we're just now getting light from that part of the universe here...

CG OK? It's no doubt being done. They'll validate the simulation by comparing the fit of best freeze-frame to the actual image.

The hard part of simulating a galaxy collision is that most of the mass involved is dark matter. Like "the force", it surrounds and permeates conventional matter in galaxies, and the halo of dark matter extends well beyond the visible blob.

The various blobs of dark matter will flow right through each other, focused perhaps into odd streams or very slowly quivering invisible shapes by their mutual gravitational influence. Meanwhile, the gas stays behind at the collision point. Then it begins to spread out and stream off because it no longer is confined in a dark-matter gravity well. This stuff is sooo coool.

Best viewed from a nice safe distance!

Sorry -

Can't be happening. Nope.

The Universe can't be older than Earth which can't be older than 6,000 years.

Anyways - moot point. The world will be ending soon anyway.

Which reminds me of a new recipe from my upcoming book "101 Bomb Shelter Recipes With Government Cheese - making the end times the best of times."

Galactic Smores -

This one is a great "comfort food" for the kids. All you need is marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers and a stack of books on evolution / astronomy and a little bit of potassium iodide.

Create campfire with books on evolution / astronomy. Make them into a tee pee structure when you light them and they will burn more evenly. If you are in your bomb/fallout shelter and have poor ventilation, don your gas masks before lighting.

Place a marshmallow on a stick and roast it over the fire. If marshmallows aren't available, use a chunk of government cheese. Once roasted, remove the marshmallow from the stick by sandwiching it between two graham crackers. If they aren't available, just cut some cardboard off of you government cheese box and perforate it with a key to give it that graham cracker look. More cheese can be used to substitute for chocolate.

Squeeze the crackers together to get the marshmallow to ooze out a bit.

Fun for the whole family!

Bon Appetite!

So, if I was able to travel around the Earth's equator about 8 times per second, and then decided to check out Stephan's Quintet traveling at the same speed, it would take me about 280 million Earth years to get there? And by the time I did of course, over half a billion years would have taken place from what I had originally seen?

Whoa. Now I see why being a creationist is so appealing.

In the inflationary model, the expansion can exceed the speed of light in places, but then those places are out of touch with the others.

Also realize that for the first few thousand years, there wasn't even matter; galaxies formed after the first billion years or so.
And space continued to expand as the light was on its way here.

We clearly didn't travel that distance at the speed of light. I mean, we're just now getting light from that part of the universe here...

Good question, and the answer is complicated. When space itself stretches and expands over time, it's not easy to say just what "distance" means.

Think of a balloon surface. The universe has three space dimensions, and the balloon two, but you get the idea. Now if the balloon is inflated while an ant crawls across its surface, the estimated time of arrival for the ant, [if the balloon would ever stop expanding] could keep getting postponed.

The light now reaching us has been enroute some 13 billion years, even though it didn't start out nearly that far away from where our galaxy's seed was at that time. If we sent a return message, it would never arrive, because the return address is on a part of the 'expanding balloon' that is now so far away that the distance to be covered grows, with the growth of the balloon, faster than the light message (crawling ant) can crawl.

A few billion years from now, the cosmic background microwave radiation will have faded to undetectable wattage, and the wavelengths grown longer still. Far fewer galaxies will be visible in even the best telescopes, because most of the ones we see now will have vanished over the expansion horizon.

Nice visualization.

BTW - I have a nagging question from "Brief History of Time" that I have never gotten answered - perhaps you or someone here might know the answer (or could fashion a plausible on.

About midway through the book, Hawking describes how black holes can theoretically lose mass. He talks of matter- anti-matter particles constantly appearing throughout space-time, and that they usually appear and vanish as they simply "cancel" each other out. When they appear on an event horizon, however, if the anti-matter particle falls in and the matter particle of the pair does not (eg - "escapes") then the hole loses mass.

Question is why would the anti matter particle be any more likely to fall in than the matter.

Either one can fall in. But once it does, the energy/mass has to come from somewhere, in this case, the black hole.
Eventually, the antiparticle meets a particle, and they get together and bang - they produce two photons, which also have real energy.

The market jumped about 3% today. Before anyone starts cracking open champagne bottles, understand that this brings us to almost the same numbers we were at on June 15th.

Fed sees slow recovery holding jobless rate high

The unemployment rate could hit 10.1%, forecast the Fed, with the jobless rate staying elevated in 2010, and only dropping modestly the following year. The unemployment rate hit 9.5% in June.

But officials are wary of buying more Treasury bonds to support the economy. There were concerns that the move to expand the program to buy $300 billion in Treasurys might only hike long-term interest rates given the opposition to the central bank monetizing the debt.

Translation - The Fed does not want to buy our own debt much anymore.
What else did they have to say?

In its latest forecast, Fed officials raised their estimates for GDP growth this year. But they also hiked their unemployment rate forecast to 10.1%.

The jobless rate would stay elevated in a narrow range of 9.5% to 9.8% in 2010 and only drop to a range of 8.4% to 8.8% in 2011.

Lou Crandall, chief economist at Wrightson ICAP, said members of Congress are going to be unhappy with this latest Fed forecast.

The comment about GDP growth is a bit misleading. They still think GDP will shrink this year, just a little bit less than originally thought.

Car Czar's exit prompted by probe?

The White House auto czar, who abruptly announced this week that he was leaving the administration, could face legal action in New York over his former company’s dealings with the state pension fund.

The Associated Press reported late Tuesday that New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo could press for a legal settlement with Steven Rattner regarding potential civil charges in a wide-ranging pay-to-play investigation.

Al Qaida paranoid of Predator Drone Attacks

For good reason too. Since the start of the year approximately 16 Predator Drone strikes have killed around 268 terrorists in Pakistan's North Western region where the taliban and al Qaida are holed up. So far in July over 70 terrorists have been killed by Predator Drones.

The latest Predator Drone strike possibly tagged a taliban leader and a Predator Drone attack in June just missed Baitullah Mehsud by hours.

Just the sound or sight of the Predator Drones causes panic. So much so that al Qaida terrorists have violently turned on one another out of confusion and mistrust.

Good news.

CAR CZAR STEVEN RATTNER RIDES OVER VINEYARD

May 18, 2009 --

STEVEN Rattner, the auto industry adviser to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, is flagrantly thumbing his nose at President Obama's call for Americans to make sacrifices in the collapsing economy.

Rattner is moving full-speed ahead with construction of a lavish, $15 million summer home in the Lambert's Cove area of West Tisbury on Martha's Vineyard -- a palatial mansion he's had in the works since 2006. It's caused a furor among wealthy Vineyard residents, who've called the planned 15,500-square-foot project far too big and gaudy, The Post's Mark DeCambre reports.

These Predator drones are taking apart Al Qaeda. The list of people hit are mostly middle level commanders, which is who you want to target. If you hit only the top, they will be replaced by middle level people. Low level fighters are who NATO are fighting in Af'stan, & there seems to be a huge supply of those. Hitting the middle level severs the link between the foot soldiers and the organization. That's were it counts. Eventually, the top level leaders are exposed as they have to work harder to reach the remaining middle level people. That's when it's fatal.

re: #105 karmic_inquisitor

On the face of it, I'd guess he just didn't want to make the book any longer by inserting a parenthetical (or vice-versa.) Nothing makes for worse scientific exposition than to insist on telling the full truth. That's for research papers.

Person Shot Near U.S. Capitol

A U.S. Capitol Police officer shot a person at New Jersey Avenue NW and C Street NW, blocks from the Capitol, according to law enforcement sources.

It happened just after 5:15 p.m.

D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Pete Piringer said the wounded person was a civilian, who had been shot by a U.S. law enforcement agency. Sources say it was U.S. Capitol Police.

The wounded person was taken to the hospital for treatment. The person's condition was not immediately available.

The shooting happened just blocks from the U.S. Capitol.

Sudan: Women Who Wore Pants Are Flogged in Public

The police arrested 13 women in a raid on a cafe in the capital, Khartoum, and flogged 10 of them in public for wearing trousers, one of those arrested said Monday. The women were detained Friday by officers of the public order police, which enforces Sudan’s strict Islamic law in public places. One of those arrested, Lubna Hussein, a journalist, said she was challenging the charges, which can be punishable by up to 40 lashes. “I didn’t do anything wrong,” she said.

I'm not sure it is. We have to start by defining what our goals are. If our goal is to turn Afghanistan into a modern western democracy, then forget it. Maybe in 200 years the Afghans can get there on their own, but we can make it happen.

The best we can do is to kill the Al Qaeda & Taliban leadership, train the core of an Afghan national army, help set up and mentor some decent institutions and then keep a small hand in to prevent it from all falling to hell. Anything more is destined to fail.

NASA to De-Orbit International Space Station In 2016

Despite nearing completion after more than a decade of construction, and recently announcing some upcoming improvements to accompany its full crew of six astronauts, NASA plans to de-orbit the International Space Station in 2016. Meaning the station will have spent more time under construction than completed.

The fact that the ISS has already had $100 billion dumped into it over the years is reason for criticism over the proposed de-orbiting. Proponents of the extra-terrestrial shelter feel 2016 would be too soon to let the 700,000 pound craft crash into the Pacific Ocean. Critics against it say it wastes too much money with few tangible outcomes.

Many of the station's research programs have already been cut and the US Space Shuttle program is ending in 2010, which leaves few big-ticket programs left on the agenda (save for the station's yet-to-be-installed Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, which searchers for dark- and anti-matter).

Gee, all that time and money and we haven't even finished building the damn thing yet.

I love watching launches -- every one of them gives me a thill. But in another way, they tick me off as well, because they're only into Earth orbit. When my dad woke me up to tell me the Russians had launched Sputnik (yes, I'm that old!), I was certain that by this time we'd have colonies on the Moon and Mars at the very least, possibly in the asteroids and on Jupiter's moons as well. Yet we don't even have a respectable space station yet, never mind any of the rest. I'm ticked.

Well, maybe the Chinese will get around to it eventually, but I expect to be long dead by the time anyone makes it past the moon. Dammit!

Way back when the plan for space was a stepping stone plan. Get a station up. And use it as a platform for other deeper space missions. Missions launched from a station don't have the same lift and size restrictions that ground launch does. It's possible to put smaller common pieces together at the station and send it off.

Natalya Estemirova, of the Russian human rights group Memorial, was kidnapped outside her home in Grozny, Chechnya, Oleg Orlov said, citing eyewitness reports.

She was later found dead in the neighboring Russian republic of Ingushetia, said Orlov, the head of the organization's Moscow office.

Estemirova, 50, was a leading human rights activist in the North Caucasus area who had been openly criticizing Chechnya's authoritarian president, Ramzan Kadyrov, and his methods.

UN says south Lebanon weapons cache a violation

BEIRUT (AP) — The U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon said Wednesday ammunition which had exploded in a southern village was a "serious violation" of the U.N.-brokered ceasefire that ended a monthlong war between Hezbollah militants and Israeli forces three years ago.

Lebanese security officials said a series of explosions Tuesday in an abandoned building near Lebanon's tense border with Israel was caused by a fire in a Hezbollah weapons depot. Hezbollah has not commented.

The blasts caused no casualties but highlighted the long-held suspicion that the Shiite militant group has maintained a military presence in the region near Israel's border despite the deployment of Lebanese troops and U.N. peacekeepers there under a resolution that bans such unauthorized guerrilla activity.

A statement by the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon said Wednesday that the force commander had updated Lebanese officials on the discovery of the ammunition after the explosions.

Based on the information currently available, UNIFIL considers the incident a "serious violation" of the U.N. resolution that ended the conflict, which specifies that there should be no presence of unauthorized assets or weapons in the area of operations.

I imagine a harshly worded letter is in the works

I am a bit late on this, but,

If the universe was supposed to be created by a big bang then, by definition, all matter is expanding, right? So if thats the case how come 4 galaxies end in the same space colliding? Perhaps God allows such things to happen to make us THINK about what we meer humans postulate and hypothersise into fact?

Universes' "Baby Picture" matter is not distributed uniformly. Result is a "swirling" mix of matter in expanding space.

Picture stuff in water (poor analogy) and adding more water, the stuff will still bump into other stuff.

Let's see. 5 percent of 1,000,000 dollars is 50,000 dollars. That's 50K taken away from the GDP. By the time the Feds get done with it the return is what? 10% maybe -- just a wild guess. But the full value is far less than 50K and probably less than half after you consider government inefficiency.

Then that 50,000 which goes away from discretionary spending by our citizens. That means no kitchen remodel or home addition which could have been there. Making a 1,000,000 per year isn't exactly rich depending on current debt obligations.

Getting back to the thread -

One thing I recentl;y learned is that Russian physicists call a Black Hole a "Frozen Star".

The name implies a perspective that looks at time impacts more than on light. And from that perspective, "frozen stars" a pretty cool. An observer who falls into one may get crushed, but in the time frame of those outside the hole it will take almost forever to happen.

So if I fell into a a black hole right now and texted you guys, you might see 1 character cross your screens every thousand years while to me, I'd be texting at a normal rate on my way to being crushed.

Interesting Report on Regional Iranian Military Expansion

(report is from January, but I only just found it...)

According to intelligence reports, in recent weeks, the mullahs’ regime has installed long-range and anti-aircraft missiles, and has deployed a number of members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the outskirts of Eritrea’s Port of Assab near the Red Sea. This initiative by the mullahs takes place in the context of agreements the regime had signed in Asmera with the government of Eritrea.

These forces and equipment have been transferred to the region using the regime’s submarines. The agreement and the deployment of forces and long-range missiles in the Port of Assab have been carried out under the guise of renovating the port’s oil refinery (which is an old facility). The mullahs’ regime is operating there under the cover of refining crude oil in the port’s refinery. It has also crafted phony documents in this regard.

Has Iran pre-positioned long range missiles to disrupt shipping in the Red Sea? Iran has threatened to blockade shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, but are they planning to harass ships in the Red sea too?

Terminally Ill Denied Drugs for Life, But Can Opt for Suicide

The news from Barbara Wagner's doctor was bad, but the rejection letter from her insurance company was crushing.

The 64-year-old Oregon woman, whose lung cancer had been in remission, learned the disease had returned and would likely kill her. Her last hope was a $4,000-a-month drug that her doctor prescribed for her, but the insurance company refused to pay.

What the Oregon Health Plan did agree to cover, however, were drugs for a physician-assisted death. Those drugs would cost about $50.

Agreed. I haven't really seriously looked into the issue of Obama's current heathcare proposal. I've just become fatalistic at this point. I'd be more open to the idea if the economy was in better shape and we weren't running massive deficits. I'd also prefer to see them fix social security and medicaid before embarking on another massive social entitlement program. It's a gov't program. It's accurate.

Dem,Rep, doesn't matter. Bureaucracy has a natural tendency to expand, if it's unhindered.

And we got the Great Unhinderer dude.

They really do have boxes misplaced all over that thing.
I could redraw it so it's more clear; but it doesn't matter, the plan is overwrought and complex and will be very costly but will result in a reduction of services and benefits - just a bad plan.

Here's another flowchart that people were spamming onto social networking sites today...
Morals vs Mortages

I have a problem with the whole "greedy bankers" argument.

EVERYONE was greedy. From the home buyer who thought they were buying on the upswing, to the mortgage brokers and realtors pushing the deal, to the bankers lending the money.

Oh and anyone who says they didn't know about the adjustable rate is not being truthful.

A couple of years ago one of our state reps got the brilliant idea to take a certain tax rebate from the companies and put it in a Rainy Day fund. The governor, this session, told the state congress not to touch the Rainy Day fund.

Uh, gov? See that guy over there with the big boat and the extensive menagerie? Maybe it's time to get into the fund.

(Unless, of course, the plan all along was to use that fund for another entitlement program. Ya think?)

AP sources: Tenet canceled secret CIA hit teams!

WASHINGTON (AP) - As CIA director in 2004, George Tenet terminated a secret program to develop hit teams to kill al-Qaida leaders, but his successors resurrected the plan, according to former intelligence officials.

...

[Democrat] CIA Director Leon Panetta drove the final stake into the effort in June after learning about the program. He called an emergency meeting with the House and Senate Intelligence committees the next day, informing lawmakers about the program and saying that as vice president Dick Cheney had directed the CIA not to inform Congress about the operation.

...

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Silvestre Reyes, D [D as in Democrat] -Texas, is expected to decide as early as this week whether to press ahead with a full investigation.

Could you imagine?! Killing al-Qaida leaders on the ground?

The modern movement started post WWII-- before that, there was the depression and Prohibition. Now, not a lot of people want to acknowledge it, but the first fruits of giving women the vote was the Volstead Act -- Prohibition. The ladies came damn close to being disenfranchised because of that silliness. Not a lot of ground gained for them in the 20's because of that, I suppose.

What are they trying to do just bankrupt small business? ... I cannot stand them ...

The House bill, introduced by Democrat leaders, exempts only small businesses with payrolls of less than $250,000. The bill, America's Affordable Health Choices Act, H.R. 3200, will go to the floor for debate and possible amendments and a vote is expected before the House goes into their August recess.

Under the House bill, the payroll penalty would then phase in starting at 2 percent of payroll for firms with annual payrolls over $250,000 rising to the full 8 percent penalty for firms with annual payrolls above $400,000. In addition, a new small business tax credit will be available for those firms who want to provide health coverage to their workers.

Employers that choose to offer coverage must meet minimum benefit and contribution requirements specified in the proposal. Employers would have to pay 72.5 percent of the premium for individual coverage and 65 percent of the premium for family coverage, according to a Business Insurance report, plansponsor.com reports.

In a new report, the Congressional Budget Office said that such "pay-or-play requirements" could result in the hiring of fewer low-wage workers. "Employees largely bear the cost of health insurance," the budget office said, according to The New York Times. But, it added, "employers cannot reduce wages for workers receiving the minimum wage, so "a play-or-pay provision could reduce the hiring of low-wage workers."

Small business groups have reacted to the low thresholds for penalties, The Wall Street Journal reports. "This bill costs too much, it covers too few and it has way too much government involvement," said Michelle Dimarob, a lobbyist with the National Federation of Independent Business, the main trade group for small firms. "Small business doesn't want any of those things."

Credit card charge offs are up for somey:
Bank of America Credit-Card Charge-Offs Reach 13.86%

July 15 (Bloomberg) -- Bank of America Corp., the biggest U.S. bank by assets, said net charge-offs on its credit-card trust rose to 13.86 percent in June from 12.5 percent a month earlier.

Payments overdue by 30 days or more fell to 7.73 percent from 7.95 percent in May, according to data posted today by the Charlotte, North Carolina-based lender on it Web site.

Bank of America’s charge-off rate was the highest among five U.S. credit-card issuers that reported today, and one of only two that climbed from the previous month.

American Express Co., JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Discover Financial Services reported month-to-month declines, while charge-offs at Capital One Financial Corp. rose.

WCTU was very popular with female voters, but ridiculed by men. Without the women's vote, Temperance candidates could not have been elected. So, in effect, giving women the vote caused Prohibition.

I still don't understand how Prohibition allegedly threatened women's suffrage.

I didn't say that. I said that giving women the vote got the Prohibition ball rolling. It is possible that after the disaster that was Prohibition, somebody blamed women voters and suggested repealing the 19th amendment.

Why? She's not bad looking. The pose is kind of lame, but typical of the period.

I can see how, if she had been a Bunny, she could have turned a little bitter; she probably did not see men at their best in such a situation. Tom Wolfe once described the Playboy Clubs as "recalling the parlor floor--not the upper floor, but the parlor floor--of a red-flock whorehouse," which seems pretty apt to me.

Don't like Norton or McAfee. I've had to fix registry settings with McAfee; no big deal for me but it took them months to fix the bug where it would constantly tell you to reboot until you fixed the registry setting. Then, a few updates later, it would start again.

After an explosion, UNIFIL finally takes notice:
UNIFIL: Lebanese arms cache a 'serious violation' of ceasefire

A day after Israel cried foul over an explosion that uncovered a hidden Hizbullah arms cache in southern Lebanon, the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon said Wednesday that storing the ammunition was a "serious violation" of the UN-brokered ceasefire that ended the Second Lebanon War in 2006.

Maybe UNIFIL will send a strongly worded letter to Hizballah instead of a dinner invitation.

Oh, yeah. I still remember the first time I saw it. Went to the movieplex with a date to see the acclaimed "Blue Lagoon." It was sold out. The adjoining theater had "Airplane," which I had never heard of.

Couldn't have been more than 10 people in the audience for "Airplane." What I remember most is that, for the first 30 minutes or so, nobody laughed, just sat there with 'WTF?' looks.

In retrospect, I guess we had no idea what to expect, so the first part went right over our heads. A movie that was way ahead of its time, I think.

What are your dreams? If you won the lotto...What would you do?

A number of years ago the place where I was working was pinched for space. All the peons had to share cubes. Being a peon, I shared a cube. After my cube-mate had been there about a year, he won the lotto.

A big lotto. He and his wife were to get half a million bucks a year AFTER TAXES for 20 years.

He continued to work there for well over a year after he got the news. It irritated the shit out of a lot of people.

Why? Is it sort of like the first turn at Indy?

Kinda like that, Nasa is crashing a probe into the moon.

OF SOME NOTE:
Those of you who are so inclined please pray for Realwest. Cancer test results - he is not well now. The others do wish him well, please, he is one of us. An original Lizard as one can be and a real good mensch.
Last but not least he is a friend of mine and that counts for something.

See you all down the road.
I love you (Lizardim} - mostly. - Really!

SELF-DELETED.

((Real))

He's what I aspire to be one day. Kind, thoughtful, tough when he needs to be, giving his time and efforts without a thought of recognition for himself.
I am praying for you, real.

"Four of the galaxies in the group are visible in the optical image (yellow, red, white and blue) from the Canada-France- Hawaii Telescope."

Way late to the party, but it's pretty cool when we're recognized by the universe.

And we are concerned about gobal warming. A sun crashing into our solor system at 2 millions miles per hour, now that would mess things up.
