Sessions: GOP Won’t Filibuster Sotomayor

Sen. Jeff Sessions (who has no earlobes, by the way) says the GOP won’t block the vote on Sotomayor’s nomination.

Shortly before the committee concluded its questioning of Sotomayor,  Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), the panel’s senior GOP member, told Sotomayor he would “look forward to you getting that vote” by the time the Senate takes its annual summer break, slated to begin Aug. 7.

In case anybody cares -- I've now updated my original Holdren essay to take into account recent developments:

The White House gets involved: Recent statements by Holdren and the Ehrlichs in response to this controversy

When I originally wrote and published this essay on July 10, I said:

"Unfortunately, as far as I've been able to discover, Holdren has never disavowed the views he held in the 1970s and spelled out in Ecoscience and other books."

However, that is no longer entirely true. On July 15, both the White House and John Holdren's office issued statements on this controversy after prodding from reporters at both the Washington Times and the Catholic News Agency.

According to this article by Amanda Carpenter in the Washington Times, Holdren and his co-authors have now distanced themselves from the words published in Ecoscience 32 years ago. From the article:...

etc.

Correct. Not to mention that Session wouldn't be able to drum up enough support to mount a filibuster in the first place. Earlier this week, another Senatorial GOP genius announced that his party would consider it "a victory" if they got over 20 votes scraped together in opposition to her confirmation.

Note to GOP - losing by a 4 to 1 margin is not a "victory" by any stretch of the imagination. It is a crushing, embarrassing, pounded-into-the-ground-like-a-tentpeg defeat. Attempting to redefine "victory" under these terms is not a good sign of what the future holds for the GOP.

Sotomayor learned the ropes on 'Tarzan' case

Sotomayor mentioned the lessons of the Tarzan case during her confirmation hearings. She said the case taught her "the tragic consequences of needless deaths."

A family was destroyed after one of the siblings was killed by a bullet in the head, she said. "They scattered to the four winds, and only one brother remained in New York who could testify," she said Tuesday.

The Tarzan case was Sotomayor's rite of passage as a prosecutor. She sat second chair, meaning she assisted Mo, the lead prosecutor, at the murder trial of Richard Maddicks. Read the complaint (pdf)

Maddicks earned his nickname by swinging from building to building with rope and cables, Mo said. Along his route, he burglarized top-floor apartments, robbed residents and shot people who got in his way.

That's my problem as well. I don't think anyone's going to ever sterilize the population using chemicals in the water supply, but I am deeply disturbed by anyone who thinks that way. Even to discuss it "neutrally" without firmly rejecting it is an implicit acceptance.

of interest

NBC TV, Dallas , had a "tear in the eye" news-wipe story this morning,
my guess is same thing in many local markets, "do good" by the "stimulus money".

All about this 77 year old widow in South Dallas, (90% Democrat vote area) getting "green energy" stimulus money deal, $10,000 of new "green windows" and new green doors, so that her $1,000.00 per/year electric bill can be cut 1/2 to $500.00

some research should show the White House/Pelosi/MSM connection via
a teleprompter in the DNC,

it was not a normal news story, you could tell it was a staged event

Somehow I doubt those windows will cut her energy usage in half. I'll bet her house is also poorly insulated, ad leaks air like a sieve.

Very true. However, we also don't suggest that there is room for fascism under the US Constitution as the Eldriches and Holdren put forth in the book for population controls. It's a bit of a warning flag for me. Do I expect Holdren to put forth and act on extreme measures in the near future as Obama's science guy? re: #54 Sharmuta

There's a distinction is discussing extreme measures and advocating them. Just because you and I have discussed the extremes of fascism in the past doesn't mean either of us advocate them or embrace them.

Imagine this example. I write an essay which says,

"Babies crying in public are a problem. The noise bothers people. There are several ways we can address this problem:

a. We can give the babies some milk; maybe that will calm them down.
b. But if it doesn't calm them down, maybe we can threaten their parents with a lawsuit for disturbing the peace.
c. And if that doesn't work, the possibility exists that we could put muzzles on the babies.
d. Another way to solve the problem is to kill all the babies.

I certainly hope this problem can be solved before it gets out of hand."

Now, in that example, I didn't advocate killing babies, but by describing the option fairly neutrally, without any hint of condemnation or moral outrage, there remains the sense that I'm "OK with it," whether or not I overtly "advocate it."

And what if I added the following sentence:

"Screaming babies are a threat to civilization and they're driving everyone crazy; we must solve this problem at all costs, and it looks like the milder solutions just aren't working."

That's basically what Holdren did in his book. He never baldly and brazenly advocated for compulsory population control, both he essentially made the same roundabout argument I just did in my example: He dispassionately discusses all the options, then points out that the less extreme options probably won't work. That's the thrust of the whole book.

RCMP investigating 6th bombing of B.C. pipeline

RCMP are asking residents in northeastern B.C. to be patient as they investigate the sixth bombing of an EnCana Corp. natural gas pipeline, attacks they are now labelling "domestic terrorism."

The latest attack was discovered Saturday near the small village of Pouce Coupe, eight kilometres south of Dawson Creek, just three days after the fifth explosion. The latest blast caused a small leak of sour gas that was quickly contained.

This would be an example of "leftwing extremist" terrorism.

Thats okay, this summer I will put 350 of my own stimulus dollars into the local lumber co for attic insulation. I will, eventually, put another 1000 to 2000 into the windows buy my stimulus runs out faster than the "government's"

Barry and Hill gave Iran a choice, join the modern world or suffer isolation. Guess what the Mullahs picked.

Iran Spurns Engagement on Nuclear Drive, Thwarting Obama Effort

July 16 (Bloomberg) -- Iranian leaders are turning inward and rejecting engagement with the West as they blame outsiders for street protests, even as President Barack Obama’s administration pushes for curbs on Iran’s nuclear program.

The leadership has denounced foreign governments as “enemies” for encouraging demonstrations over last month’s presidential election and plans to put a British Embassy employee on trial for inciting the protests, which were violently suppressed. A French student also has been detained on spy charges.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton responded yesterday that direct talks remain “the best vehicle” for presenting Iranian leaders with a choice of limiting their nuclear ambitions or continuing “down a path to further isolation.”

In a speech to the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, Clinton said neither she nor Obama “have any illusions that dialogue with the Islamic Republic will guarantee success of any kind.” She added that “the prospects have certainly shifted in the weeks following the election,” an assessment endorsed by specialists on the region.

"Victory" is not the right word. But now that everyone agrees that the appointment of Supremes is purely political and that absent filibuster capability the Senate minority loses, surely it would be a good show of political unity and a good for-the-record show of jurisprudential objection to her manifest and inadequately explained legal realism for all Republicans to vote "no". Would this be "graceless", or ungentlemanly? No. She gets the job. The Prez gets his appointment (empathy, though denied be Soto, and all). The left gets its legal realist on a precedent-making (and rejecting) court. These are political victories. The Republicans - by voting "no" - get to play their political part. They disappoint nobody. No hard feelings. What goes round comes round. The need to put a happy face on the inevitable is an understandable instinct - but misplaced in politics.

Speaking of Sen. Sessions. . .

I got this mailer the other day, which he was signatory to, which turned out to be a survey described as a "canvas" to help the GOP determine how to proceed on the Hill. At least, that's what it claimed was the purpose. Did any of the rest of you get one of these things?

I ask, because I eagerly opened it hoping to be able to communicate my preferences on issues to the GOP, only to discover after reading the letter accompanying it, that there was simply no way it was capable of communicating any such thing. The entire survey consisted of questions like "Who do you prefer as Speaker, Pelosi or Boehner?" Uh, what kind of stupid question is THAT to ask a conservative? Seriously, if the Republican party has my freakin' address, they pretty much already know the answer to that. There was not a single question of the valuable sort:

"On a scale of 1-5, with 1 being low importance, and 5 being high importance, how do you rate the following issues?"

In other words, not a single question in the survey could not have provided any real insight into how I felt about the issues, rather it was written in a semi-inflammatory fashion, full of hysteria. . .I get the distinct impression it was fashioned simply as something to include in the envelope with yet another request for monetary contributions, serving no real purpose whatsoever, and destined for the recycling bin if it in fact got mailed back.

Here I was, eager to provide our elected GOP representatives an idea what issues I find important, and which I don't think they should push, and all I got was a junk survey. I felt rather insulted.

No problem. You had buried it at the end of a dead thread. By the way, I couldn't find where anyone "upthread" had found that.

You couldn't find it? You must have not been looking very hard. Here you go. It was like 5 posts up from mine.

[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]

BTW, it's funny that you think I 'buried' my answer. I was responding to people on that thread. Instead of hijacking a thread or taking one over.

And that link's been posted since in spinoffs by others. :)

Thanks again for reposting this!

Parts of California only have two seasons -
Mudslide season
Wildfire season

We haven't had a good mudslide season here in San Diego for a long time. That might change this year. Just this week they declared an El Nino condition. Should bring more rain to the Southwest this year.

re: #145 sattv4u2

I have been studying weather patterns and changes as a hobby since I was a teenager in the mid 1960's.
I have noticed shifts in climates, temperatures and accumulations of rain and snow. I have done this from many differnt parts of the USA, as well as during my travels abroad. After carefully looking at the data I have accumulated, I have sceintifically broken it all down into 4 categories. For the sake of clarity I shall name them
spring
summer
winter
fall

Think I can get a government grant to continue my research?

LOL!! I'm sorry sir, but it appears you have already successfully concluded the entire study and reached what appear to us to be valid conclusions.

For future reference, when writing to us here at the department in search of grant funds, we would recommend something like this:

'For the sake of clarity I shall name them:
spring
summer
winter

I also am quite convinced there is a fourth category, as yet unresearched and uncategorized. My sense is that a grant of between ten and twelve billion dollars should be more than sufficient to complete my research.

You do research. Very good research into items like Holdren's book, Ayres's pamplet, etc. You also do very good photojournalism of various rallies, parades, and riots. The research you do it most appreciated, especially here.

re: #160 Yashmak

That's exactly what it was. Not exactly a new technique, however. I get crap like that all the time from different organizations, including the NRA.

Here's a good one:

Just because it's in an academic setting doesn't mean that every possible option should be discussed without discarding the unacceptable ones.

One commenter mentioned the male/female imbalance in China. In a hypothetical discussion on how to "solve" that problem, it might be proposed that the Chinese government go the simple route and murder enough Chinese males to get the ratio back in balance.

If that "solution" were proposed in a text book without pointing out that it would be immoral and not actually a viable option, it would be completely reasonable for a reader to determine that the authors actually considered it an acceptable option.

At some point you've got to accept that your contortions to try to portray Holdren's words as something other than they were just doesn't hold up to examination. Just because he was nominated by someone on "your side" doesn't mean you need to tie yourself into knots to try to excuse his past.

Holdren has a long history of anti-science totalitarian kookiness and shouldn't be anywhere near steering any sort of policy more important than what he'd like for lunch.

re: #149 zombie

Zombie,

I was able to locate a paper, yet again co-written, by John P. Holdren titled:

The Meaning of Sustainability: Biogeophysical Aspects
by John P. Holdren, Gretchen C. Daily, and Paul R. Ehrlich

Some excerpts of note:

1. "That Development Must Address" Excessive population growth - Driving forces Excessive population growth Where excessive means growth that closes more options than it opens (Holdren 1973), a condition now prevailing almost everywhere.

2. No form of material growth (including population growth) other than asymptotic growth, is sustainable;

3. Many of the practices inadequately supporting today's population of 55 billion people are unsustainable; and

4. At the sustainability limit, there will bee tradeoff between population and energy-matter throughput per person, hence, ultimately, between economic activity per person and well-being per person.

5. This is enough to say quite a lot about what needs to be faced up to eventually (a world of zero net physical growth), what should be done now (change unsustainable practices, reduce excessive material consumption, slow down population growth), and what the penalty will be for postponing attention to population limitation (lower well-being per person).

Ahmadinejad: Iran will "bring down" Western foes

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Newly re-elected President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday his next government "would bring down the global arrogance," signaling a tougher approach by Tehran toward the West after last month's disputed election.

Ahmadinejad, in his first provincial trip after the June 12 presidential vote, said Iran's enemies had tried to interfere and foment aggression in the country, referring to mass opposition protests against the official election result.

The hardline president, who often rails against the West, said the Islamic Republic wanted "logic and negotiations" but that Western powers had insulted the Iranian nation and should apologize.

Iranian leaders often refer to the United States and its allies as the "global arrogance."

"As soon as the new government is established, with power and authority, ten times more than before, it will enter the global scene and will bring down the global arrogance," he told a big crowd in the northeastern city of Mashhad.

Congressional Budget Director Warns Health Care Bills Will Raise Costs

On the heels of the Senate health committee's approval Wednesday of a plan to revamp U.S. health care, three House committees with jurisdiction over the issue shifted into action. But the director of Congress' budget office warns the proposals will raise costs.

What a bunch of fucking idiots! We're all going to the poor house with this administration.

Mousavi: Protesters' blood will not go in vain.

Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi vowed not to let the blood of protesters killed in postelection crackdown go in vain as he met with the family of a young man shot to death during the turmoil, reformist Web site reported Wednesday.

Mousavi, meanwhile, announced Wednesday that he will attend Tehran’s main Friday prayer services this week for the first time, a key symbolic assertion of the opposition’s presence after the crackdown.

The sermon Friday is due to be delivered by Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, a powerful cleric in Iran’s leadership who has not performed the sermon since the turmoil erupted following the disputed June 12 presidential election. Rafsanjani is a top rival of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and is believed to be a strong behind-the-scenes backer of Mousavi.

"I’ll join you (for prayers) on Friday July 17," Mousavi said, according to his Web site ghalamnews.ir.

The main Friday prayer sermon at Tehran University is a significant political platform that hard-line clerics have used in recent weeks to demand a halt to postelection protests and spread the message that that turmoil was fueled by foreign enemies. Rafsanjani’s sermon could give the first opposition voice in the sermon.

Only if there are enough seats to provide proportional representation of every interest group, no matter how small or large, important or inconsequential. Basically, I don't think it's possible to accomplish without giving every last one of us a seat on the supreme court. Now THOSE would make for some long (and in some portions, incredibly poorly written) opinions.

re: #194 Gus 802

2. No form of material growth (including population growth) other than asymptotic growth, is sustainable;

3. Many of the practices inadequately supporting today's population of 55 billion people are unsustainable; and

4. At the sustainability limit, there will bee tradeoff between population and energy-matter throughput per person, hence, ultimately, between economic activity per person and well-being per person.

5. This is enough to say quite a lot about what needs to be faced up to eventually (a world of zero net physical growth), what should be done now (change unsustainable practices, reduce excessive material consumption, slow down population growth), and what the penalty will be for postponing attention to population limitation (lower well-being per person).

re: #268 zombie

I just noticed that!

And and outstanding comment it is...

Jessica, this is zombie from zombietime.com, the person who wrote the original essay about Ecoscience which you discuss in your post.

I'm merely dropping in to thank you for linking directly to my post, which is a courtesy many Holdren supporters have been too afraid to do when attacking my essay. Since I feel my essay speaks for itself, and contains a lot of facts and information I think Americans should see, I'm very glad you gave your readers the opportunity to see for themselves the thing you're trying to debunk. I highly recommend that everyone read it and come to their own conclusions based on Holdren's own words, totally aside from what either I or you have said. So, I commend you on your style of full-disclosure journalism, even though I obviously disagree with your defense of Holdren and your presumption about my politics. (Did you notice, for example, the section where I say that I myself am pro-choice on the abortion issue, and disagree with the notion of forced abortion because it removes the concept of "choice" from the equation?)

The one point I most strongly take exception to in your post is when you say that my essay is a "blog rant - which in turn bases its accusations on out-of-context snippets." My essay is no rant, as any reader can see if they were to actually read it, but more importantly, I go to great lengths to NOT present the quotes out of context. First I give each quote in question; then I give the full extended passages from which the quotes were taken; and then I give full-page scans of the entire pages they're on; then I link to an online version of the whole book; then I recommend that readers read the book themselves. What more context could I possibly give? Have you EVER seen an article which gives more context? I address the issue of "the context game" in my essay, predicting (accurately) that Holdren supporters like you would endlessly demand "more context" until the reader becomes overwhelmed and loses interest. That technique itself -- of falsely claiming that something is "taken out of context" -- is journalistically dishonest in its own way.

Anyway, kudos for being among the few Holdren defenders to actually link to my essay.

A Stanford computer science professor and mentor to Google's founders who drowned in his Atherton pool had a blood-alcohol content more than three times the level that constitutes drunken driving, authorities said today.
Rajeev Motwani was found dead June 5. The cause was accidental drowning, said San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault.
Toxicology tests showed that Motwani's blood-alcohol content was 0.26 percent, Foucrault said. The level that constitutes drunken driving is 0.08 percent.
Friends said Motwani, 47, did not know how to swim.

Then again it won't matter one way or the other - it's not like she can ever lose her job.

Through this 4 day barage of Senate babbling, has anyone actually seen her write something? Do we REALLY know that she can write?

Actually, you could look at this as evidence that the more extreme stuff in "Ecoscience" came from the Ehrlichs, since Holdren doesn't appear to advocate the same extreme measures in other writings from the time that didn't include Paul Ehrlich as a co-author.

If you agree to put your name on as a co-author, you're in a poor position to argue "it wasn't me", IMHO.

That could be the case. If not one always has to consider that Ecoscience was written nearly 15 years before said paper.

That's very possible. Holdren may advocate much milder measures than the Ehrliches. The Ehrliches, especially Paul Ehrlich, hold rather extreme ideas about population growth and what to do about it. The references from the article (I posted in #292) may give more insight.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, accused of race politics today during the EPW hearing

While most people were paying attention to Day 4 of Sonia Sotomayor's Senate confirmation hearings, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) was grabbing the attention of all those watching the Environment and Public Works hearing this morning.

It got very testy.

Boxer was speaking to panelist Harry C. Alford, the president & CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce.

They first started talking about where he lived, which led to Boxer telling him, "Let me talk to you, this is friendly."

That didn't last too long.

Okay then how come Holdren keeps working with Elhrich? The 1995 paper was also co-authored with him.

Since we are on the topic of co-authorship I was able to locate a paper under the sole authorship of John P. Holdren:

Population and the American Predicament: The Case Against Complacency

Authors: Holdren, John P.

Abstract:

A brief narrative description of the journal article, document, or resource.
The goals of the Caltech Population Program are to increase understanding of the interrelationships between population growth and socioeconomic and cultural patterns throughout the world and to communicate this understanding. This series of occasional papers is one step in the process of communicating research results. The papers deal primarily with problems of population growth and the interaction of population change with such variables as resources, food supply, environment, urbanization, employment, economic development, and social and cultural values. This fourth paper in the series concentrates on the consequences of population growth in the United States. The author presents the position that the American population should be stabilized or even reduced. Reasons for this belief, as well as possible methods and their liabilities, are discussed.

UN panel issues new sanctions against North Korea

UNITED NATIONS – A U.N. Security Council panel imposed new sanctions Thursday against North Korean officials and companies aimed at curbing the nation's nuclear defiance.

The panel named five people and five companies subject to travel bans and a freeze on financial assets. It also designated two types of materials used in ballistic missile parts — certain types of graphite and para-aramid fiber — that nations must refrain from supplying to North Korea.

Sanctions were approved against the General Bureau of Atomic Energy in Pyongyang, the chief agency directing the North's nuclear program. That includes the Yongbyon Nuclear Research Center and its plutonium production research reactor, as well as its fuel fabrication and reprocessing facilities.

Also named were three Pyongyang-based companies — Namchongang Trading Corp., Korea Hyoksin Trading Corp., and Korean Tangun Trading Corp. — and one Iranian-based company, Hong Kong Electronics.

In fact, doing so on a repeated basis suggests that he had no problem with associating with the Ehrlichs or their radical views. Besides, if he was taken aback by the extreme statements being proffered, Holdren could have chosen to end his associations with them at any point during their editorial/author relationship. That he continued publishing papers with him all through this period shows at a minimum a tremendous lack of judgment. He now apparently going to play the game that he didn't totally understand or agree with the conclusions of those papers, but that appears to be out of political expediency, and not any long held belief.

Obama to set binding timetable for Israel-PA talks

The American plan will essentially restart negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians which have been deadlocked for over six months. The plan will not deal with all of the specific details of the negotiations and will not provide parameters for the resolution of core issues. Rather it will provide a framework for negotiations, how they will be conducted, follow-up mechanisms and especially the timetable for negotiations.

The senior diplomat said Obama is interested in bringing talks to a conclusion "on time" as a way of obligating the parties to make progress.

after reading this bit by Beldar this morning over at Paterico, i no longer care if she gets sworn in. in fact, it seems like a good idea:

The one that jumped out at me yesterday was when she was describing her ruling in the baseball strike case, and she referred to the “National Labor Relationships Board” — which I would have guessed to be an online dating service for union members.

However, I hasten to add — in a Seinfeldian “not that there’s anything wrong with that” mode — that someone whose native language was not English can easily be forgiven many such small burrs and thorns and blemishes. I was probably more irritated when Sen. Graham repeatedly referred to Judge Sotomayor’s “wise Latino” remark, and Judge Sotomayor’s English is many orders of magnitude better than my own rudimentary Spanish. The “eminent/imminent” distinction, at least in spoken English, is more subtle than “pen/pin,” and I wouldn’t have noticed it.

"In any event, these language quirks are no reason for a senator to vote against her, nor for us to mock Obama for nominating her. And she is going to be confirmed. At this point, I’m entirely satisfied with that result. Watching Judge Sotomayor testify — and comparing her with, for example, Chief Justice Roberts in the same setting — confirms my belief that Obama could hardly have nominated a less effective person to be an internal advocate within the Supreme Court’s deliberations for the political points of view he would espouse. The idea that she’s ever going to talk Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, or Alito around to her point of view on anything by virtue of subtle but powerful rational argument is essentially nil. The likelihood of her doing so with Kennedy is fractionally larger, but barely that — and appointing someone who could have done that (e.g., Cass Sunstein or someone else whose intellectual approval Kennedy might have craved) was the greatest opportunity for Obama in this appointment, an opportunity that he clearly has missed."

re: #349 iceweasel

Yes, it is a big deal.

As an American, surely you know that Americans don't have to disclose who they voted for, or if they voted at all.

As an American, surely you endorse the First Amentment, which means I and all others have a right to express our opinions, regardless of how offensive you might find them, and regardless of what class, race, creed or group I belong to.

So tell me now: explain to me why it's so important that I disclose my citizenship, my party affilation, who I've voted for, how many times I've voted, and what country I live in, in order to express a political opinion on LGF?

Then tell me how you know more than I do about what it is to American-- because from what I'm seeing, you don't know the first thing about it.

That's quite a reaction.

I believe I did explain to you why some people might find the disclosure of your citizenship important, but I'm happy to repeat it: You are here advocating for things that are of consequence to American citizens. If these things are of no consequence to you personally, it would be helpful for others to be aware that you are coming from that position.

You know. For context.

And you are smart enough to know that.

Restart negotiations that have gone nowhere. That's going to do a world of good since the underlying facts and circumstances have not changed at all. There's no reason for Israel to engage in still more concessions when they have yet to see any action from Hamas or Fatah that indicates they'll agree to a 2-state solution with Israel as a Jewish state.

Hamas isn't releasing Gilad Shalit anytime soon either, despite the flurry of articles a few weeks back around the 3d anniversary of his capture.

Once again, the diplomats try to make the world as they wish it to be, and not as it is.

Okay, he can't escape that one.

No, he can't. He takes two positions from a cursory review. It's a scan so it's not searchable. To his credit he does support nuclear power. He does end with this and yes there is "context" that I will leave out:

"[The] recent rapid decline of fertility in the United States is cause for gratitude but not for complacency. Efforts to understand the origins and mechanisms of the decline should be continued and intensified, so that the trend can be reinforced with policy if it falters."

The obvious translation is that the decline in fertility should be met with gratitude. He sees this decline as an opportunity to study its cause. Holdren then concludes that if the decline in fertility falters it should thus be reinforced through policy.

Charles? One question: What do you think of Paul Erlich?

Honestly, I never read "The Population Bomb" or any of his other popular books, so my knowledge of him is limited to what I know from other sources (interviews, etc.). His predictions of disaster don't seem to have been borne out by reality, at least not on the timescales he projected, but I do think he wasn't completely wrong about the effects and consequences of overpopulation, and as a pop science writer he helped raise people's consciousness about a potentially very serious issue.

English service

Method of serving private dining room or restaurant food in which a waiter or waitress serves each guest from a large dish, starting with the host or hostess (or a guest of honor, if any) at the head of the table. In a more formal version (requiring a high degree of skill and showmanship), the host or hostess carves the meat and dishes out vegetables on each plate which the waiter or waitress serves first to the guest of honor (if any) and then to other guests.

That's my problem as well. I don't think anyone's going to ever sterilize the population using chemicals in the water supply, but I am deeply disturbed by anyone who thinks that way. Even to discuss it "neutrally" without firmly rejecting it is an implicit acceptance.

Is that the kind of supposedly "non-political" science czar we want -- someone who ponders the acceptability of totalitarian measures?

But "discussing neutrally" is what science is about. If you "accept" or "reject" a fact up front, it ain't science.

Science is not policy. Science is about how the physical universe works. Policy is the concern of ethicists, politicians, and those of us who vote for them. Just my two cents.

I'm not so sure it really is a serious issue. Thomas Malthus proposed many of the ideas Ehrlich used in The Population Bomb, and his crises never came to fruition. Erhlich's crises never have either. Julian Simon challenged Erhlich by proposing that humans will adapt (as they have in the past) to changing and depleting resources. They made a wager about commdity prices, if they would go up or down. Simon bet down, Erhlich bet up. Erhlich lost.

I'm of the opinion that humans will adapt to changing conditions as they always have, and that catastrophe is not around the corner.

re: #363 lawhawk

In fact, doing so on a repeated basis suggests that he had no problem with associating with the Ehrlichs or their radical views. Besides, if he was taken aback by the extreme statements being proffered, Holdren could have chosen to end his associations with them at any point during their editorial/author relationship. That he continued publishing papers with him all through this period shows at a minimum a tremendous lack of judgment. He now apparently going to play the game that he didn't totally understand or agree with the conclusions of those papers, but that appears to be out of political expediency, and not any long held belief.

Quite apart from the extreme statements made is another, perhaps more pertinent question that overcomes the issue of this particular books age: the suggestions were made because of what Holdern and the Ehrlichs saw as a looming, inevitable crisis that was about to swallow the entire planet, causing massive unrest as unprecedented levels of starvation, disease, rioting and general chaos gripped the overpopulated earth. The entire book is foundation and scaffolding supporting this imminent catastrophe not as some speculative fantasy, but as a cold, hard fact backed by science.

Yet that supposedly science-based, apocalyptic future never came to pass. What was touted as fact-based, scientifically derived and supported prognostication turned out to be not just wrong, but really wrong. Terrifically wrong. Improbably, stupendously, monumentally wrong.

And it wasn't the only doomsday scenario eagerly embraced by the authors that came up short in the reality department. The Ehrlichs were huge proponents of another soon-to-wash-over-the-planet cataclysm that would doom mankind and the earth itself, yet which never came to pass - global cooling. They helped lead the public fear-mongering during the 1970s over the coming age of two-mile-thick glaciers crushing Manhattan, of frozen oceans and deserts where rain forests once stood. Then, when reality didn't cooperate, they quietly slunk off.

Only to arise promoting yet another upcoming doomsday scenario in the form of global warming, which they loudly promote today.

So we have someone who has actively participated in promoting junk science, in collaboration with people who have made careers out of leaping from one improbable cataclysm to the next with the common theme that something must urgently be done 'cause the shit's gonna start hitting the fan real soon now - according to SCIENCE - and then it'll be too late and we'll all die, which ultimately turns out to be utterly wrong. Do we want someone as "science czar" with a track record of being so completely, abysmally wrong himself, who associates with those who repeatedly been so completely out of touch with reality and seem to hop from attention-grabbing fad to fad over and over and over again? Seems like a poor choice to me.

How about selecting someone who's actually done hard science and gotten it right? How about a Nobel Prize recipient - in one of the hard science categories, like physics or chemistry? Maybe someone who's directed a large research facility, like Bell Labs or Lawrence Livermoore National Labs? Why are we getting stuck with some fringy goofball who doesn't seem to know enough about science to make predictions that match up with reality just a tiny, little bit? There's no shortage of real scientific talent out there, and no shortage of scientists who are capable of providing sound, well reasoned and well researched opinion on a wide range of scientific topics.

Why is 0bama picking a loser, instead?

Instead of fixating on this single passage, I would suggest that someone begin reading through the large corpus of Holdern's published work and see whether his former association with the Ehrlichs and promotion of tinfoil-hat-territory "science" is a one-shot aberration, or an ongoing theme in is work to the present day.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I have thrown in the towel on Lubbock and accepted a job in Colorado Springs. I will be selling my business to a younger associate who lives in far south Lubbock and is therefore not as concerned with the incredible tangle of road projects and orange traffic cones that are strangling the center of town.
When the billion dollar Marsha Sharp Porkway is finished its net benefit will be to reduce the travel time between Idalou and Brownfield by about 10 minutes. The Porkway is bad enough, but there is a mass of minor projects that run concurrently, apparently just to ensure that literally every main street in central Lubbock is blocked as well. When all this is finished, the idiots plan to tear up five miles of the main drag, 34th street, and "re-develop" it. This is idiocy. My 200K house (which would be worth a million or more in LA) will be worth about $12.50 by the time these assholes are finished. This morning I drove 7 miles to get between 2 points that are less than a mile apart on the map. The reason: One of them is in the middle of the cone-blocked pork zone. There is much, much more to it, of course, including the complete dominance of Nirther morons and Paulistinian kooks in the local political scene, and the city elite's slave era devotion to a cheap labor economy founded not on kidnapped Africans but on exploited Mexicans.
Don't come here unless you're the type who would go to Beirut or Mogadishu for the sheer adventure of it. Whatever you do, don't invest with these scoundrels or send your children to Texas Tech, lest they turn into brain-dead drunks, frat orgy sluts, and Lubbock bidness droids.

Oh, come on. Next, you'll be telling me people reject predictions because they don't match up with their political ideology.

Spit McCarthy into your face? Surely not. Especially not given the turn this thread has taken. I can assure you I never spit.

I always ask people who they voted for. They're not obligated to tell me of course, but they all do. Some admit they didn't even vote.

IMO, The ones that don't vote have nothing to complain about. They chose to sit out of the process. They chose for someone else to make that decision for them.

Not worth my time.

I voted for Not-Obama.

One should vote, if for no other reason than to maintain the right to bitch about the government. I figure if you don't vote then you need to STFU and just take what's coming.

Is the right ever going to stop the whining about this?

Bush nominated conservative justices. The liberals pissed and moaned over Roberts and Alito.

Obama, in the shocker of shockers, nominated a liberal. Oh…my…god! Really??? Now we get to hear the right piss and moan, which sounds very similar to the pissing and moaning of the left.

Fact is, Sotomayor is a liberal who replaces a liberal. It doesn’t change the balance of the court. The next retirement is likely to be Ginsberg, a liberal who will—in yet another surprising move by Obama—will be replaced by a liberal.

Fact two – most reasonable people who aren’t rabidly liberal or rabidly conservative want the court to be balanced.

599 [deleted]  Thu, Jul 16, 2009 6:59:21pm
600 mrkwong  Thu, Jul 16, 2009 10:59:44pm

Sotomayor actually sounds like a normal human. She's not a Roberts, or even an Alito, nor a Ginsburg; she definitely hasn't been leading the dance with the Senate. She's been more in the stand-on-their-toes-and-hold-on-for-dear-life mode.

I don't give a damn about the 'wise Latina' crack, that she's one of those things is undeniable, her claim to the other is a bit of self-aggrandisement that may or may not be harmless; I'll charitably assume the former.

The way the Didden and especially the Ricci decisions were mailed in is far more troubling, and if I were King I'd say her involvement in Ricci was reason enough to disqualify her. But I'm not, Ted The Hyannis Carbuncle gets to vote on nailing her to the Highest Bench In The Land (TM) and I don't, and as such I'd rather have her than a truly scholarly, erudite Pillar of Leftist Thinking.

She is, after all, replacing Souter, who's been a pretty reliable vote for many things I loathe.

re: #293 shortshrift

Why don't you write to your favorite Republican and explain your favorite issues and complain about silly spam surveys? If you are chagrined at being presented with survey that would not allow you to say what is important to you, why not just say what is important to you ? Such a petty excuse for such high dudgeon. Surely your efforts to find fault with the Republican party must get the prize.

Wow man, so much animosity. Look, I regularly write my representatives (republican and democrat alike), as well as the more influential members of my party, to express my views. Perhaps you shouldn't make assumptions about folks you've never met and know nothing about. "Excuse for high dudgeon"? Please. I just thought it nice that, for a change, the mailer in question actually seemed to be reaching out for genuine input from the voters, which as I described turned out was not the case. . .rather it was just a propaganda ridden plea for money. Maybe you don't find such things annoying, but I do.
