Totten: Arguing for Uncertainty (with Demagogues)

Michael J. Totten answers an attack from anti-Islam zealot Andrew Bostom: Arguing for Uncertainty.

Andrew Bostom – pal of Robert Spencer and the deranged Pamela Geller – bizarrely accuses me of being an uninformed dogmatist for publishing a “roseate view” of Iraq, even though my article in question was dedicated to quoting Iraqis and American soldiers with a gloomy view of Iraq. The Future of Iraq Part III just wasn’t dogmatically down-beat enough for old Andy Bostom, I guess.

The Future of Iraq Part IV will be published here shortly. Everyone I’ll quote in that piece is also pessimistic about what’s likely to happen in Iraq now that American troops are withdrawing from urban areas. For more optimistic assessments, see The Future of Iraq Part I and The Future of Iraq Part II.

The reason I’m publishing competing narratives about the future of Iraq is because anything’s possible and I’m no longer arrogant enough to think I have it all figured out.

James Fallows politely argues with his colleague Robert Kaplan, whom I recently interviewed here, in The Atlantic. “Arguing for uncertainty,” he wrote, “or for many possible futures that will in fact be shaped by real choices by real human beings, may seem weak and unsatisfying. On the other hand: it conforms to the facts….”

Jeffrey Goldberg, also at The Atlantic, agrees. I interviewed him here recently, too. “Anyone who acts like they’ve figured out the entire Middle East doesn’t know anything,” he said. “People who tell you they understand and know the answer? Demagogues. They’re either idiots or demagogues.”

There are things that can be predicted:

People will continue to do what they believe is in their best interest.

There are things that cannot be predicted:

Natural disasters, technological advances (not too far out, at any rate), sudden sweeping events that baffle the experts.

The reason I’m publishing competing narratives about the future of Iraq is because anything’s possible and I’m no longer arrogant enough to think I have it all figured out

The other reason is because Totten is being honest, showing that Iraq, not unlike any other country, is filled with people of all views.

It's just that now the Iraqis can (by and large) voice them in it's post Saddam days

Et tu, Iran???

re: #8 itellu3times

Can you have a "narrative" about the future?

According to the dictionary, it doesn't even have to be true, so I imagine it could be predictive

1. a story or account of events, experiences, or the like, whether true or fictitious.
2. a book, literary work, etc., containing such a story.
3. the art, technique, or process of narrating: Somerset Maugham was a master of narrative.

Uncertainty is underrated. People who require a lot of certainty in their lives are disappointed, frustrated, and often belligerent.

At least I'm pretty sure that's the case. :)

There is a certain portion of the conservative base who doesn't want fear to end. If fear and uncertainty end, then their grip on the agenda loosens. So they feed tinder to that fire when they can. It helps to further their agenda. So you have some talking the economy down, some turning against the war, even though they steadily accused the Dems of doing so for six years.

The middle east is littered with idiots who seek answers in theology. There are none. God gave us brains to figure this stuff out for ourselves. God gave us the holy books to serve as case studies for good as well as evil. The interpretation is up to you.

Robert Spenser's error is in assuming that Fundamentalist Islamic interpretations represent the mainstream. It is a very common interpretation, and it is advocated and funded by our pals in Saudi Arabia. However, he's tarring too many with this broad brush, and I don't think they deserve it.

re: Iraq, you're dead wrong. The conservatives hasv ALWAYS wanted the fear, death and killing to end. The "progressives" reveled in the quagmire that it could have become.

On the economic front, again conservatives were talking up the economy until Obamas policies (i.e. stimulus) was introduced. From that point on the all thats been said is that the spending will NOT result in job creation nor a turn around, one that has already started with scant little "stimulus" moneis in the pipeline

I have a complementary thought about people wanting a smoothly operating Government. It's not necessarily a good thing. In fact, it could be dangerous. Our government was designed to have an obstructionist Senate. They are supposed to make it difficult to get legislation through. That's why 60 dems in the Senate would be a little scary, if it weren't for the fact that two of them are on sick leave.

"Hi, I'm ___ )__, need to get a routine cleaning." I said, by way of getting this started.
She looked over the clipboard once more, then, with a sonorous tone, intoned,"I, can cause Pain, you know!"
Without missing a beat, I leaned in toward her and whispered, "Promise?"
She laughed so hard she dropped the clipboard.

“People who tell you they understand and know the answer? Demagogues. They’re either idiots or demagogues.”

There's only one answer to the human condition - freedom from tyranny/dictatorship of the citizenry.

Liberty is the only answer.

We, in America, threw off the yoke of tyranny centuries ago. We should be a beacon of hope (and reality) and yet too many Americans don't even understand FREEDOM!

How can we expect others to do so in such a short time?

Keep shining the beacon of liberty and thwart those who would harm the human spirit and will to survive.

Bostom is indeed a demagogue. It seems that whenever a writer/blogger is off the script the friends of euro-fascists perfer, then they switch from being "intellectuals" writing of jihad to bullies. I believe it's to discredit those who don't march to their drum, and in this case they will try to discredit Mr Totten.

Israeli Warships in Suez Canal a Signal to Iran?

Two Israeli warships reportedly sailed through the Suez Canal on Tuesday, ten days after a submarine believed to be nuclear-armed made the crossing.

The deployment into the Red Sea, confirmed by Israeli officials to The Times of London, came ahead of long-range exercises by the Israeli air force with the U.S. later this month and the test of a missile defense shield at a U.S. missile range in the Pacific.

Israel has strengthened ties with Arab nations who also fear a nuclear-armed Iran. In particular, relations with Egypt have grown increasingly strong this year over the “shared mutual distrust of Iran”, according to one Israeli diplomat.

They sent a sub through last week. The sub is supposedly back.
If I were them, though, I'd see about sneaking a sub through while openly sending warships. The ships could shield the sub from detection. Then, while the ships do one thing, the boat launches cruise missiles and disappears, coming back with the ships.

The unfairly maligned John Yoo does a nice job of exonerating himself:

It is absurd to think that a law like FISA should restrict live military operations against potential attacks on the United States. Congress enacted FISA during the waning days of the Cold War. As the 9/11 Commission found, FISA's wall between domestic law enforcement and foreign intelligence proved dysfunctional and contributed to our government's failure to prevent the 9/11 attacks.

Under FISA, to obtain a judicial wiretapping warrant the government is supposed to show probable cause that a specified target is a foreign agent. Unlike, say, Soviet spies working under diplomatic cover, terrorists are hard to identify. Yet they are vastly more dangerous. Monitoring their likely communications channels is the best way to track and stop them. Building evidence to prove past crimes, as in the civilian criminal system, is entirely beside the point. The best way to find an al Qaeda operative is to look at all email, text and phone traffic between Afghanistan and Pakistan and the U.S. This might involve the filtering of innocent traffic, just as roadblocks and airport screenings do.

Well, in fairness, the Dems did create that whole Official Fear Index thing, with all the colored swatches, and...

[...]

Observing the lightning breakup of the Soviet Union, the Chinese take ethnonationalism with deadly seriousness. American's elite regard it an irrelevancy, an obsession only of the politically retarded.

After all, they tell us, we were never blood-and-soil people, always a propositional nation, a nation of ideas. Our belief in democracy, diversity, and equality define us and make us different from all other nations.

Indeed, we now happily predict the year, 2042, when Americans of European ancestry become a minority in a country whose Founding Fathers declared it set aside for "ourselves and our posterity."

Without the assent of her people, America is being converted from a Christian country, nine in 10 of whose people traced their roots to Europe as late as the time of JFK, into a multiracial, multiethnic, multilingual, multicultural Tower of Babel not seen since the late Roman Empire.

The city farthest along the path is Los Angeles, famous worldwide for the number, variety, and size of its ethnic and racial street gangs.

I'm with Totten on this, to say nothing of Goldberg's observation that those who think they have things figured out are demogogues or are idiots. I've been studying the Middle East for the better part of my life, did my Master's Thesis on the Middle East peace process, and blog regularly on ME politics and I am not so arrogant to say that I know what will happen.

I can tell you what I wish would happen. I can tell you what I expect to happen, but there's no way I could tell you what will happen.

The ME is predictably unpredictable. There are some certain things that are treated as conventional wisdom because they have happened so often that it's expected. Then, there's the whole issue of anti-Semitism, which shades every interaction between the Arab world and Israel (think of all the propaganda, even from the countries that have peace treaties with Israel). There are what appear to be irreconcilable hatreds, and it's not all Israel-Arab. It's Sunni/Shia. It's tribal. It's competing nationalist identities vying for supremacy and the attentions of the superpowers.

And there's a reason that the Middle East is so central to the narrative of world history. It's a crossroads, and as such has seen so much conflict; and that conflict is itself illuminating as to where we go from here.

When I'm driving my car, I give up my right to privacy. They can inspect at every roadblock they want.

When I'm on my cell phone or computer, I expect privacy. Or used to, until we lost that right.

But why should I be worried about the government monitoring my private communications? I'm not a terrorist, right?

The economic pitch.
On Tuesday night, the mid-summer classic was held in middle America.
Our 44th President had the honor of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.
I saw a lot of symbolism in that pitch.
The pitch was delivered from the left.
It started out with a slight upward arch, then the trajectory started tumbling downward until it crashed into the ground, short of the already pre-set lower than normal standard.
Of course the compliant media showed only the stylish wave and smile from the one that delivered the pitch, not the disappointing result.
I can only wonder if we have an Albert Pujols who can dig the economic pitch of our President out of the dirt .

Somali-born Roosevelt grad pleads guilty to terror acts

A Seattle man has pleaded guilty in Minnesota to terrorism-related charges in connection with the disappearances of dozens of U.S. Somali youths, some of whom turned up fighting with suspected terrorists in Somalia and at least one of whom became a suicide bomber, according to court documents and interviews.

Court records show Abdifatah Yusuf Isse, 25, a 2002 Roosevelt High School graduate and a former economics student at Eastern Washington University, traveled to Somalia to train with Al-Shabaab, a Somalia-based radical Islamist group that last year was designated by the U.S. State Department as a foreign terrorist organization.

His court-appointed attorney said Isse was likely being recruited as a possible suicide bomber.

That's very refreshing and encouraging. Seattle has a large Somali community. We had a few in the last apartment building we lived in. They were here as immigrants for all the classic and right reasons, freedom, security, and opportunity.

They made wonderful neighbors, other than they didn't have recipes for the wonderful smelling food they cooked. I asked one of the women if she had any recipes, I had to explain what a recipe was.

The problems with the STS external tank insulation began when the govmunt (via EPA)* forbade the continued use of TCE. As a degreasing/cleaning agent it allowed proper adhesion of the foam insulation. Never had foam break free from the tanks prior to that prohibition.

Um, yeah, that was sort of Yoo's point.

When I'm on my cell phone or computer, I expect privacy. Or used to, until we lost that right.

When did we lose that right? If you think the intelligence agencies are interested in your phone sex calls, you are seriously delusional.

But why should I be worried about the government monitoring my private communications? I'm not a terrorist, right?

Even if the government were monitoring your private communications (which it isn't), any evidence obtained that you were breaking the law would be inadmissable in a court of law.

Monitoring, data-mining, call it what you want. Why do you say the government's not doing it? They said they did. We don't know the extent of it, because of state privilege, and we may never.

I'm not talking about "evidence" in a "court of law," as I've committed no crime. People in a position of power knowing details of my private life is a recipe for abuse; it's almost guaranteed. I don't trust the government as much as you do, David. Distrust of the government used to be a basic principle of conservativism. Why did it flip-flop?

You'll have to fill me in on "phone sex," though, as I've never experienced it. Always seemed like an oxymoron, to me.

Interesting. The US also has a missile equipped Destroyer in the Black Sea anchored off of Georgia for exercises right now.

They're not doing it to you (unless, of course, you've visited a Madrassah in Pakistan recently). Did you read the whold piece? The world has changed, Ed. When the FISA law was enacted, e-mail, cell phones and fiber optics weren't around. (And let's dispense with the "well then, amend it; it has been amended more times than the Constitution" argument. Do you, who is so timid when it comes to government intrusion, really want to argue that the extraordinary measures that were taken after 9/11 should be codified and made permanent?)

The Obama administration seems to have realized that trying to fight terrorism through law enforcement is a losing battle. I do hope that you will see the light as well.

Hope you'll see the light too, David. In the meantime, we'll have to disagree.

I do question being labeled "timid" for insisting on my right to privacy, though. To me, "timid" describes people who voluntarily surrender their rights in return for illusive security.

"A government powerful enough to give you something is also powerful enough to take it away," as Gerald Ford once said. No, wait. He was talking about taxes or welfare or something else bad, right? :)

No, I copied the whole sentence exactly as you typed it. If it left out the proper context, well, consider it a taste of your own medicine.

As far as showing my ID is concerned, I do it all the time. I'm not sure what I wrote to make you think otherwise.

Anyway, I don't do pointless pissing contests, so you're welcome to the last word (or, if you prefer, insult).

Good night, Ed.

I'm tilting toward Ed in this byplay, but David has a point (the unfortunate 'timid' notwithstanding).

During wartime it might be sensible simply not to ask, to some extent, the government questions that would be asked during peacetime.

I added "to some extent" because of Abu Ghraib.

Good night, David. No insult intended. I left out my "sarc" tag on the very last line. I was a little ruffled by your repetition of "timid," seeing as you don't know me or my temperament at all. But I'll get over it. Hope to talk with you again.

Excellent point, jvic. "To some extent" is always the fly in the ointment, isn't it? Along with the question of who gets to determine it.

I agree some reasonable limitations of our usual rights might be justifiable in wartime. I always gave the government the benefit of the doubt on that, until they told me that this war was, in effect, permanent. There went my benefit of the doubt.

I'm also troubled by a contradiction. Generally, the same people I talk to who support most strongly giving the government powers to illegally snoop on us are the ones who are quickest, on a dozen other subjects, to raise the "slippery slope" argument against a government program or practice.

Nobody can tell me why the slope is not slippery on surveillance, but is slippery everywhere else. Make sense?

Hope your evening's a good one.

re: #429 ShanghaiEd

Couple of clarifications;
It's over when the job is done, (and not at a particular date, so the blowflies and wannabe dictators have a move-in date) does not constitute a permanent state of war.

The republicans have not controlled both houses of congress for over two years (but ronpaul is ..well...scary)

Your slippery slope point is valid, and also applies to areas you would not normally assign it.

Hey, swamp! Good to hear from you.

I agree wholeheartedly with your points #2 and #3. Either all the slopes are slippery, or none are. I can get behind that.

I would only take issue with your #1, as I did on a similar subject with David. To accept that explanation at face value, you have to be a lot more trusting of the government than I am.

Very true. People were a lot more trusting of the government, back during WWII. And they had good reason to be. Nowadays, not so much. Don't you know that the government is the problem, not the solution?

I had heard that.
The government is not evil per se.
It's incompetent and self serving.
Businesses are self serving, but generally are competent because they have to make a profit.
The left has given us good things..(child labor laws, early child nutrition, education for all...but the sugar teat can be a nasty master, as has been proven over and over.
Moderation in all things. Beware the slippery slope.
