Sanford: I’m Doing God’s Work

Politics • Views: 2,510

In an op-ed published in several South Carolina newspapers, philandering Republican Governor Mark Sanford now says God wants him to stay on as Governor: Now and going forward.

It’s in the spirit of making good from bad that I am committing to you and the larger family of South Carolinians to use this experience to both trust God in his larger work of changing me, and from my end, to work to becoming a better and more effective leader.

In this regard I think all that has transpired will be particularly relevant in the way I deal with the legislative body and other state leaders going forward. Micah 6:8 asks us to do justice, love mercy, and to walk humbly, and as I begin these steps into the last 18 months of this administration, it will indeed be with a more contrite and humble spirit.

It needs to be less strident and more about finding ways to work with legislative leaders to advance the ideas so many of us believe in. It means less time fighting the tide - and a greater awareness of the fact that God controls it.

You know what? I hope that he is as religious as he states to whoever is listening, and that he feels like dog poop right now. I hope he feels like dog poop for a long, long time in the future.

I also wish he would learn about being humble and just say "I sinned. I am working with Jesus and my family to repair this mess I've made" and then go on. Now isn't the time to be righteous, it is the time to be low key and with his minister. As for the Governor thing? If he really wants to stay on, he adds the following "Although not deserving, I am hopeful the people of SC will allow me to continue serving them in the capacity of Gov. I've wronged the very same people I care about, and will begin to rebuild the trust that I shattered though time and doing what I was elected to do. Thank you, and have a good day". EXIT. NO QUESTIONS. JUST GO BACK TO WORK.

This ass left the fricking country to fuck around, leaving the state without a governor and without knowing where the hell he was.

I'm sick to death of sanctimonious people who drag their version of God in to save their asses and rationalize their behavior while condemning others for things that are none of their damn business, all the time expecting everyone to agree with their version of things, when that is very far from the case.

Sanford is a scum bag, and the Republican Governors ought to have kicked his ass out, made him walk the plank, exit the stage, retire to the sanatarium, immediately when this broke out.

Believe it or not, adultery is still a crime in Maryland. I used that little-known fact to scare the hell out of my then-husband, since everyone and his cat knew he was cheating. The main use made of this law is that people plead the fifth in divorce court when questioned about adultery.

He was using Bible quotations to try to convince the citizens of that state that he should not pay any consequences for his actions, which go beyond his unfaithfulness to his wife and family, and includes unfaithfulness to the citizens of the state during that period of time he "disappeared" (and then lied about it), leaving the state without its governor.

re: #179 reine.de.tout

The guy is quoting Bible verses that basically ask people to show him justice, love, mercy & humility that he has not shown in his life. He's the one "goofing" on faith, using it to justify staying in office. Just wrong, imo.

I have about as much empathy for him as when Swaggart was caught hosing a prostitute & crying his "I have sinned" crocodile tears for the world to see. This was after he exposed (sorry about that) two fellow evangelists, Marvin Gorman and Jim Bakker, for their sexual naughties, mind you.

Exactly.
Remember that after Swaggart was caught with the prostitute and cried those tears, he was CAUGHT AGAIN doing the same thing. I have no use for those who use Bible verses to justify their own actions. They guy made his choice; there should be consequences in this world for poor choices; whatever God's judgement will be of Sanford is not mine to know.

there has to be some bureaucratic technicality that allows us to disown the south, there just has to be.

I'll see your "Mark Sanford" and raise you a "Jesse Ventura" and an "Al Franken."

187 Skaught  Sun, Jul 19, 2009 11:05:50am

What he said/wrote was, "In this regard I think all that has transpired will be particularly relevant in the way I deal with the legislative body and other state leaders going forward. Micah 6:8 asks us to do justice, love mercy, and to walk humbly, and as I begin these steps into the last 18 months of this administration, it will indeed be with a more contrite and humble spirit."

In the first sentence he starts talking about the way he will "deal with the legislative body", then refers to the verse in Micah. So the comment is definitely about how he will approach his work. If you want to think this was a masked effort to have people treat him the same way, that's up to you. But it's not the context of the paragraph. I too think he should shut up and step down. But I can't read his mind or heart, so I don't know if he was meaning more than just the context that he wrote in.

And the 2nd time Swaggart told those at Family Worship Center that "The Lord told me it's flat none of your business."

Makes me wonder if these people even believe in G-d, or that they use Him as some sort of carny show to gain money and power. Blech.

You know Jimmy Lee Swaggart is first cousin to a couple of charismatic entertainers, Jerry Lee Lewis, and then the guy who owned the bar in Houston, Mickey Lee Gilley.

Showmen, all of them.

I can't read his mind or heart either and make no claims that I can.

What I can read are his actual actions . . . failure to abide by the commandments and carrying on a most passionate affair with a woman other than his wife, the harm this very public thing has to have done to his children, his abandonment of his duties as Governor of the state . . . I can read those actions and think that this is a man who will use whatever he can, including verse from the Bible, to deflect criticism of himself.

Yep. Knew about the relationships.

The televangelists have always creeped me out. And politicians who hide behind the Bible when they do things like Sanford creep me out just as much.

That's fine. But the words do not say what is claimed.

On target.
He has failed. Rather than face his failures, he has lied. To his wife, children, constituents, mistress and himself. Now he's trying to rationalize his lies.
No integrity, none whatsoever.

It really annoys me when people try to drag God into politics like this. If he wants to do God's work, he can resign, go to Africa, and dig clean wells for them while setting up schools.

How about setting up boarding schools for kids from inner city Charleston, to see if he can get them away from gangsta culture?

Hey, if it's missionary work, it doesn't matter what your percentage of success is, right?

195 hazzyday  Sun, Jul 19, 2009 12:29:53pm

So he got caught and then caught on to religion. He must of not been too serious about his religion before.

A lot of people in the same boat in his state. Maybe he could extend to them his new found religious humility and ask them to serve the state with him.

He can find the like minded folks in prison. And a lot of them are probably more serious and committed to their conversion then he is.

States - Negative motto's
Florida - the dumbest state
California - the most irresponsible state
South Carolina - the most unfaithful state
Washington - the disaster state
Vermont - the I Heart Pedophiles state.
Louisiana - most corrupt state 1
Illinois - most corrupt state 2 (What does this say about the Mississippi River.
Minnesota -- The Frankenstein State.

I'm thinking that after the Civil War, somehow, somewhere, some one in DC perhaps made a technical error in readmitting the south to the Union. I'm sure of it.

There has to be a way to get rid of it once and for all.

It would be better to sell San Francisco to the Chinese.

SF is actually nice to visit. The south has absolutely no redeeming qualities.

I heard that God talked to Sanford while he was eating breakfast. Apparently Gods voice came right out of a box of Corn Flakes. It was reported that God said that coveting another man's wife while abridging his commandments was OK as long as Sanford served the people as governor and used his office to made sure that all South Carolinians had concealed weapons.

201 theheat  Sun, Jul 19, 2009 3:44:29pm

I have to wonder what other voices Sanford's heard, like, "Drop your pants! Time to get sexxay with someone-not-your-wife!"

I knew he'd play the Fundie shell game as soon as he was reported on walkabout with his "spiritual adviser" after he was busted for his little side trip to bone his girlfriend. Now it's all part of God's plan, so he's gonna be A-OK with the bible thumpers.

But, honestly, who really falls for this shit? He might as well tell me his goldfish talks to him.
