Tariq Ramadan Makes Progress in the Era of Hopenchange

US News • Views: 2,366

Islamist advocate Tariq Ramadan’s backers and supporters have been patiently working away at getting him into America for almost a decade, and last Friday a federal appeals court decided to allow him a new visa hearing.

Apparently they believed Ramadan’s claim that he had no idea he was giving money to Hamas.

A federal appeals court in Manhattan on Friday reversed a lower-court ruling that had allowed the government to bar a prominent Muslim scholar from entering the United States on the ground that he had contributed to a charity that had connections to terrorism.

The scholar, Tariq Ramadan, 46, a Swiss academic, was to become a tenured professor at the University of Notre Dame, but the Bush administration revoked his visa in 2004 and again denied him a visa in 2006. The government cited evidence that from 1998 to 2002, he donated about $1,300 to a Swiss-based charity that the Treasury Department later categorized as a terrorist organization because it provided money to Hamas, the militant Palestinian group.

Professor Ramadan said in a later court affidavit that he was not aware of any connections between the charity, the Association de Secours Palestinien, and Hamas or terrorism, and that he believed that the organization was involved in legitimate humanitarian projects. “I have condemned terrorism at every opportunity,” he wrote.

In its ruling on Friday, a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit held unanimously that the government was required to “confront Ramadan with the allegation against him and afford him the subsequent opportunity to demonstrate by clear and convincing evidence that he did not know, and reasonably should not have known, that the recipient of his contributions was a terrorist organization.”

I don't see how the Obama Administration will deny him entry because of his connections to Hamas ( and the Muslim Brotherhood.). This is an Administration which just held talks with Hamas and then lied about.

Why not? As juante posted in the previous thread, FCBBHO thinks he has the right to tell Jews where they can live in Israel.

He thinks he has the right to tell us where and how to live. The scary part is that its not a certain thing that he's wrong in that belief.

Association de Secours Palestinien
(Committee for Charity and Support for the Palestinians).

The CBSP was listed as a terrorist fundraising group in Israel in 1997. Israeli police claimed the CBSP had provided cash rewards to the families of suicide bombers. [3] In August 2003, the CBSP was listed by the United States Treasury as a terrorist funding organization, also under the allegation that the organization fundraised for Hamas. [4] In November 2003, Australia announced it had frozen the assets of six leaders of Hamas, along with those of a number of charitable institutions - one of which was the CBSP.

I posted this on the other thread:

Netanyahu finally tells the US to bug off. About time:

Israel rejects US call to halt Jerusalem project

...On Sunday, Netanyahu told his Cabinet there would be no limits on Jewish construction anywhere in "unified Jerusalem."
"We cannot accept the fact that Jews wouldn't be entitled to live and buy anywhere in Jerusalem," Netanyahu declared, calling Israeli sovereignty over the entire city "indisputable."
"I can only imagine what would happen if someone suggested Jews could not live in certain neighborhoods in New York, London, Paris or Rome. There would certainly be a major international outcry," Netanyahu said.

It is time Israel says no to Obama and his lap dog Clinton. Israel is a sovereign State and if they continue to act as Obama's door mat, they will continue to be treated like one.

The unofficial rumor is that he was drunk. I suppose that's remotely possible, but I'm reasonably certain that the US bases are dry, and quite positive that alcohol is not the local choice of intoxicant. Only the Germans brought beer to dry Afghanistan.

I'm also quite certain that the US soldiers in the field will draw the appropriate conclusions from this young mans misfortune, no matter how it happened. This enemy does not take prisoners and never has. They only take hostages to be executed later on video.

The Haqqani Network is already taking a pounding because of this. If that young man doesn't come home in one piece, there's gonna be a lot more hell to pay in Talib country, either one.

The US bases are dry - though alcohol can be made with fruit juice and stuff, if you are innovative. It is a possibility, albeit remote. He was embedded, if I recall the story, and left with some locals? Perhaps he was offered, and foolishly accepted, some local intoxicant.

"We come to Chicago for the Caliphate"--Hizb ut Tahrir 2009

Just a guess, but because it is centrally located in North America?

I found this on Wiki (yes, yes, consider the source):

U.S. government position

Global Security has stated that:
"The United States Government is continuing to monitor Hizb ut-Tahrir. Despite the statements of governments of the region, the United States has found no clear ties between Hizb ut-Tahrir and terrorist activity. Hizb ut-Tahrir has not been proven to have involvement in or direct links to any recent acts of violence or terrorism. Nor has it been proven to give financial support to other groups engaged in terrorism. Because of that, it falls outside the definitions used by the United States and others to designate a terrorist group."[86]

[edit]Hizb ut-Tahrir by region

The Heritage Foundation in the US reports the organization is active in 40 countries, with 5,000 to 10,000 "hardcore" members and tens of thousands of followers.[92] Shiv Malik in the New Statesmen magazine estimates Hizb ut-Tahrir has about one million members.[1] It is proscribed in Russia,[93] and in some Arab countries.[94] It had a ban lifted on it by the Lahore High Court in Pakistan,[95][96] and it survived proposed bans in Australia and the UK after clearance from the intelligence services and police.[66][97]

The buzz cut, you must admit, is a low-maintenance cut... and in very hot weather, it makes perfect sense.

Contrast and compare with, say, Lieutenant General James Longstreet, CSA. Long hair, full beard, wool uniform. I'm willing to bet he was considerably more miserable in the heat and humidity of midstate Pennsylvania than any of our troops in Iraq.

So the shaved head thing doesn't scare me. I'd be more focused on what else is going on -- and I, frankly, haven't heard enough of what's going on there to make any judgement.

OTOH, I remember myself at that age. My current persona has absolutely no faith in the wisdom of someone that age. This is hard-learned experience from when I was that age. Let me put it this way: I got it wrong big time, and had to learn the hard way to get it right. I am very grateful that my friends at the time were still willing to be my friends after it hit the fan.

I owe them a very great deal, and my current goal is to be as good a friend to them if and when it becomes necessary.

re: #79 Steffan

The pix don't show a standard buzz cut. His entire scalp is shaved smooth, and the tan lines show it to be recent. He sure didn't shave it himself.

Sure let him in, as soon as the Majik Kingdom lets the Mormon kids on bikes in to spread the Word of the Church of Latter Day Saints.

That would be at about the same time my hunchback brother "Straightens up."

Muslim scholar => Oxymoron
Really, it is only ONE book written (dictated) by an illiterate man.

“I have condemned terrorism at every opportunity,” he wrote.

What does he mean by "terrorism"? The actions of the US and Israel?

And what is self-defense? The actions of Hamas, Hizbollah, and al-Qaeda?

Let's hope that someone asks Ramadan these obvious questions.

re: #78 Maui Girl

Why is a Muslim being considered a tenured professor at a Catholic University?

Because he wrote a dissertation about a son of a Protestant priest who became the most influential atheist writer during the Pontificate which defined the dogma of Immaculate Conception.

Besides that, it´s a grandfather issue.

Maybe I am the crazy person here, but I guess now I can just apologize and claim ignorance and be allowed in.

Although the article does not say he is a U.S. citizen, I am guessing he is not, we should at least apply the guest rule. Which is, those who are guests don't get to come in just cause they say "oops", my bad. You support our enemies you get shown the door. Or in the case the front of it.
