Obama’s Pseudo-Science Czar

Politics • Views: 4,315

Here’s a report on another one of Barack Obama’s “czars” with a background of radical leftism and woo-woo quackery: Darwin Central: Obama’s Pseudoscience Czar.

DC forum member El Goodo has done some excellent detective work on Obama’s so-called economic czars, wading through dirty pools that other so-called muckrakers refuse to tread. The first person he’s looked into is “green jobs” czar Van Jones. In typical Wikipedia fashion, the checkered past and political extremism of a politically liberal public figure is almost completely discarded and that which is left is played down. As noted by El Goodo, Jones is a former communist who was radicalized by the 1992 Los Angeles riots and has continued to associate himself with groups on the far left, including the Free Press, which advocates government control of the media, and the radical Oakland community organization Speak Out Now! As extreme as these groups may be, they’re still a far cry from the “revolutionary” groups Jones used to associate himself with, such as the now defunct Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement (STORM). I’m willing to accept that Jones may have changed his political tune somewhat. After all, Ronald Reagan was firmly on the left before he started shifting towards the right, and the term “neoconservative,” before the term became an Anti-Semitic code word among both the far left and right, was originally used to describe formerly left-leaning political and social scientists who found that following the facts led them away from socialism and modern liberalism. Still, even if he has begrudgingly admitted the realities of the free market, Jones not only continues to deploy socialist rhetoric, but embraces some decidedly specious ideas.

Jones’s Wikipedia entry notes that he is a fellow of the Institute of Noetic Sciences. Founded by astronaut-turned-parapsychologist Edgar Mitchell, the Institute declares itself in mission statement to be “a nonprofit membership organization located in Northern California that conducts and sponsors leading-edge research into the potentials and powers of consciousness.” It also goes on to say that it “explores phenomena that do not necessarily fit conventional scientific models, while maintaining a commitment to scientific rigor.” The first part of that statement is correct, but as far as commitment to scientific rigor goes, you won’t find it at this institute. The main areas of research are “extended human capacities” (just a fancy way of saying spoon-bending and reincarnation), “integral health and healing” ( not just the expected quack remedies and therapies, but even worse “distant healing” methods as well), and “emerging worldviews” (which combines ecological extremism with New Age spirituality). Members of the Institute’s board of directors and extended faculty include Bishop Desmond Tutu, professional pseudoscientist Rupert Sheldrake, religious left guru Michael Lerner, and the Clown Prince of Quackery himself, Deepak Chopra. You’ll find Van Jones listed as a fellow on the board of directors page, along with “collective consciousness” scholar Chris Bache and former Noetic Institute president James O’Dea, who currently runs a variety of “spiritual” retreats and workshops.

Are only people appointed by Democrats called "czars", or was it the same with Bush et al? This term keeps popping up but I don't remember it from the Bush era for example.

Written by the head of IONS.

A spirit of change is in the air. Every sector of society has joined the chorus—teachers improving the quality of education, doctors finding solutions to our health care impasse, politicians rallying voters on the campaign trail, concerned citizens cleaning up our environment, and families seeking new economic opportunities.

But are we merely making surface changes or are we committed to a more fundamental evolution of our society? And how do we find the inspiration, skills, and supportive community to make change happen at the scale now required?

This is where the work of the Institute of Noetic Sciences is so vitally important. To paraphrase Einstein, we can't solve our problems working from the same frame of mind in which they were created. A collective evolution of our worldview is required.

For decades, researchers at IONS have shown that the barriers to deep, evolutionary change are often self-imposed. Too often we live in fear and with limited imagination. Through "inattentional blindness," we overlook opportunities.

Obama's Science Czar Considered Forced Abortions, Sterilization as Population Growth Solutions

John Holdren, director of the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy, considered compulsory abortions and other Draconian measures to shrink the human population in a 1977 science textbook.

The 1,000-page course book, which was co-written with environmental activists Paul and Anne Ehrlich, discusses and in one passage seems to advocate totalitarian measures to curb population growth, which it says could cause an environmental catastrophe.

The three authors summarize their guiding principle in a single sentence: "To provide a high quality of life for all, there must be fewer people."

When you want to circumvent the normal Executive branch departments and not get all tangled up in that "congressional approval" and accountability nonsense, you make someone a "Czar". No nominating, no rubber stamping from Congress. And, the Czar reports directly to you. Obama is not only arrogant, he is sneaky too. The first time I remember hearing it was when Bill Bennett became "Drug Czar". No idea if that was the first time it was used in the context of a Cabinet level position.

According to wikipedia this is the first time it was used:

Drug Czar is an informal name for the person who directs drug-control policies in the United States. The 'czar' title was first used to refer to an appointed government official in a Time Magazine article in December 1973, referring to William E. Simon's appointment as the head of the Federal Energy Administration.[

Hy-Vee Food Stores Inc. will donate $250,000 to a charitable organization that provides free tours of war memorials in Washington, D.C., to World War II veterans, the West Des Moines grocer plans to announce today.

Honor Flight, a Springfield, Ohio, charity, arranges to fly veterans to see memorials for World War II and the Vietnam and Korean wars as well as trips to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The gift will allow 375 central Iowa World War II veterans to fly round-trip free from Des Moines to the nation's capital later this summer or in the early fall, organizers said Wednesday.

A very nice gesture. And if you live near one of their stores, why not support them.

It's a term invented by the press, fairly recently; I don't recall the original application, but I'm certain it wasn't complimentary.

The current Administration seems to have adopted it for it's own use, apparently an example of life imitating art.

I think the first one was the Drug Czar under Reagan.

The Senate voted Monday night to make it a federal crime to attack a U.S. service member, someone in their immediate family or their property.

By 92-0 vote, the Senate created new specific federal crimes for attacking U.S. service members or their families because of their status. This would put them in the same class of protected federal officials such as postal workers and federal law enforcement officials, said Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., the chief sponsor of the legislation.

PZ Myers has a bit more on Deepak Chopra. The guy is a complete whacko, and is an anti-evolutionist. This is the sort of person Van Jones associates with from reading the board of directors page.

No it's not going to get interesting. Some will find this guy's "beliefs" as crazy, but their own religion as sane. Two hundred years ago, a guy named Joseph Smith started a movement, which now a days, is mostly respected in American religious circles. Hubbard's Scientology started 50 or so years ago, how many more years will it take for it to become mainstream?

And yes, this guy's "beliefs" may or may not become accepted doctrine, as a "religion."

It's all has to do with longevity, age, society, not facts.

I was kidding Walter (see /) Although I believe that crazy Joseph Smith guy and don't follow Hubbard for my own reasons.

ranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's controversial choice as vice president, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie, stated on Tuesday he intends to stay on in the post despite massive opposition, and explained a surprise comment on Israel was part of psychological warfare.

Mashaie, whose daughter is married to Ahmadinejad's son, is an outspoken figure who last year earned the wrath of many, including supreme leader Ali Khamenei, for saying Iran was a "friend of the Israeli people."

But on Tuesday, Mashaie said that "What I said has nothing to do with the Israeli regime ... In fact, it was a psychological war against the Israeli regime," AFP cited the Iranian VP as telling the IRNA news agency.

"What I said was that this regime was in a mess and that this regime no longer enjoyed international support. I did not say that we suddenly had become cousins and friends," he reportedly added.

It also goes on to say that it “explores phenomena that do not necessarily fit conventional scientific models, while maintaining a commitment to scientific rigor.” The first part of that statement is correct, but as far as commitment to scientific rigor goes, you won’t find it at this institute.

This kind of quackery is what I heard more and more of (when I dared to listen) from my now estranged wife.

I'm not a fan of 'special protection' laws - a crime is a crime. It smacks of 'some animals are more equal than others'.

You weren't stationed at Fort Lewis when the protesters were throwing bricks at the vehicles leaving the base were you? My daughter and her husband were. She wouldn't drive off base with her baby in the car. Misdemeanor assault charges. Pay the fine, come back tomorrow. No Hate Crime folks. No criminal 'intent.' No news on the MFM.

Spontaneous Remission.

In 1993, the Institute of Noetic Sciences published Spontaneous Remission: An Annotated Bibliography. In this work, the authors, Caryle Hirshberg and the late Brendan O'Regan defined spontaneous remission as "the disappearance, complete or incomplete, of a disease or cancer without medical treatment or treatment that is considered inadequate to produce the resulting disappearance of disease symptoms or tumor."

Because there was no standard reference for the field of spontaneous remission before that time, the first task of the Remission Project at IONS was to catalogue the world’s medical literature on the subject. As a result, it assembled the largest database of medically reported cases of spontaneous remission in the world, with more than 3,500 references from more than 800 journals in 20 different languages.

While the authors believe that the phenomenon of remission is relatively rare, the data from their research suggest that it may not be as rare as previously believed. It appears that the impression of rarity is at least partly an artifact of underreporting, but research shows there has been an increase in the number of cases reported in the last few decades.

IN the 70's the population boom was the 'end of the world' scenario de jour.

Today it is Global Warming.

I don't think the stuff he suggested for stopping the 70's end of the world to be any worse than the solutions being brought forward for the 2000's end of the world.

I mean if humans are the cause of global warming then less humans... less GW right?

Every generation creates an end of the world worry, and every generation is proved wrong.

Oh, but this time it is serious...

The institute explores consciousness from three perspectives:

(1) First-person perspective — Supporting individuals exploring and developing their own subjective consciousness (e.g., meditation and other spiritual practices). Emphasis on inner knowing and personal transformation.

(2) Second-person perspective — Exploring and supporting transformative relationships and intersubjective consciousness (e.g., compassionate dialogue, community building, a global wisdom society). Emphasis on transformative learning and collective wisdom.

(3) Third-person perspective — Gathering data about objective physiological correlates of consciousness (e.g., research using rigorous scientific protocols, including experiments in psi, mind-body healing, and subtle energies). Emphasis on scientific understanding.[Link: www.noetic.org...]

New agers have made some inroads into some of my professional areas (Organizational Development, Training). It is extraordinarily frustrating to try to work with people on strategic planning and process improvement when fluffer nutters are floating about preaching about visioning and positive energy.

The sad part is there is no shortage of organizational leaders willing to pay for witch doctoring if it means they don't have to do the hard work of changing their own stuff.

The next time some encounter group junkie gets in my rice bowl I am likely to give him some feedback he isn't ready to grok.

209 Pianobuff  Tue, Jul 21, 2009 2:24:57pm

Now...This... is serious stuff:

(from Yahoo)
In an interview on NBC's "Today Show" that mostly covered serious topics, President Obama acknowledged that he "looked a little frumpy" in his baggy jeans. In his defense, Mr. Obama said that he hates to shop and that "those jeans are comfortable." The President went on to say: "For people who want a president to look great in tight jeans, I'm sorry." No apology necessary, Mr. President. The thought of our Commander-In-Chief wearing skinny jeans is a terrifying prospect.

The interview, which in our unofficial estimation marks the first time a sitting U.S. president apologized for not wearing tighter denim, sparked renewed interest in the infamous jeans. Searches surged on "obama's mom jeans" and "obama wears mom jeans." We even noticed a few queries on "what kind of jeans does obama wear?". Perhaps some brave souls are looking to copy the President's devil-may-care look. If it'll help stop the skinny-jeans menace, we're all for it.

OT - More barbarism from Iran:

Report: Iranian Militias Marry, Rape Virgin Prisoners Before Executions

Members of Iran's feared Basij militia forcibly marry female virgin prisoners the night before scheduled executions, raping their new "wives" and making it religiously acceptable to execute them, a self-professed member of the paramilitary group said.

The anonymous militiaman told the Jerusalem Post that at age 18 he was "given the 'honor' to temporarily marry young girls before they were sentenced to death."...

re: #222 Nevergiveup

I found what Obama said today about the F-22. he didn't use the word Obsolete but said:

"I reject the notion that we have to waste billions of taxpayer dollars on outdated and unnecessary defense projects to keep this nation secure,"

[Link: www.google.com...]

Outdated and unnecessary ha?

On the other side, supporters of the program insisted the F-22 is important to U.S. security interests — pointing out that China and Russia are developing planes that can compete with it

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, added that the F-35 is designed to supplement, not replace, the F-22, "the "NASCAR racer of this air dominance team." Supporters of the F-22 have put the number needed at anywhere from 250 to 380.

Outdated? What a jack ass

And the flip side:

"Levin, the veteran chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, was joined in sponsoring the anti-pork proposal by Arizona Republican John McCain. McCain described the F-22 program as "What Eisenhower Warned Us About."

The 2008 Republican presidential nominee actually hailed the Obama administration for helping secure support for the amendment, which McCain described as "probably the most impactful amendment that I have seen in this body on almost any issue."

Fifteen Republicans, including McCain and South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, joined 42 Democrats and Vermont Independent Bernie Sanders in supporting the amendment. "

The sec of defense did not want the planes, nor did the Pentagon.

Oh dear G-d...

Here we are looking at a limitation of Obama in terms of the people on the left he needs to throw bones to.

It is little different than the creationists that get put places by the GOP.

It sucks on both counts.

I can say that that Obama has appointed a number of very good scientists. Some of them are so good, (and I know some of them personally, one of them is my former thesis advisor, not telling who, because I don't want to blog my own identity) that I have a hard time believing that Obama personally is a fruitcake of the new age variety.

However, this does not mean that science appointments are ever immune to popular pseudo philosophies of various political groups.

Upcoming event at the Institute for Noetic Sciences.
Thursday, Sep 10, 2009, 6 – 9pm

Dr. Michael Salla presents a groundbreaking discussion of different types of extraterrestrial civilizations visiting Earth and interacting with humanity, and how they can be understood in terms of a typology popularized by eminent physicist Prof. Michio Kaku.

According to Prof. Kaku, civilizations can be distinguished on the basis of the different ways they consume and use energy on a planetary, stellar and galactic level. Once we identify the way extraterrestrial civilizations use energy, we can understand much about the technology they use, the spiritual principles they follow, and the political aspect of how they interact with humanity.

Once we understand the science, spirituality and politics of extraterrestrial civilizations, we can make informed choices about how to best transform the Earth using this information. Our Earth transformation efforts require us to make a commitment at the individual, community and national levels to work wisely with extraterrestrial civilizations assisting humanity's evolution.

They're just a couple of steps away from putting on Nikes, drinking kool-aid, and waiting for the next comet.
And they take some actual science (classifying potential civilizations), and a real, if overly popularized scientist, to give themselves a veneer of respectability.

I noticed he's gotten more short lately. He met criticisms of the health care bill with accusations that the GOP - and any other detractors - are "playing politics." In other words, he's attacking his critics, rather than defending his programs - exactly the wrong approach to take if you're trying to build public support. Meanwhile, public support for this bill in particular continues to decline - it hit 50% today, and shows every sign of continuing to drop.

It's extremely important to keep up the pressure on this front. The House leadership said today that they may recess without a vote - a sign that they're having trouble roping together enough support for clear passage, and that the Dems are fractured. The longer the vote can be put off, the more the public learns about the details, and the less they like what they hear.

GEORGE LoBUONO: The Thought and Behavior of Extraterrestrials

Potluk dinner, presentation and discussion with one of our most committed investigative reporters on the state of mind and level of consciousness of the different alien races many experiencers - including George himself - report visiting us now.

Description :
George LoBuono's book, Alien Mind, quotes human contactees and informative aliens in a startling, new exploration of the thoughts and assumptions of our extraterrestrial neighbors. His Powerpoint presentation shows how our location near the edge of a large galaxy supercluster has important implications for our interaction with aliens. Alien Mind, which can be read free on the internet, discusses alien science and how humans can both detect and identify different types of aliens and their energy networks. It introduces two new categories of aliens: megapopulations, and hyper-advanced aliens who claim to have originated billions of years ago.

Lighten up. I'm an Indianapolis fan.

Speaking of football:

RENO, Nev. (AP) -- A woman has filed a lawsuit accusing Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger of raping her last summer in his penthouse room at a casino in Lake Tahoe during a celebrity golf tournament.
Roethlisberger's lawyer adamantly denied the allegations Tuesday.
"Ben has never sexually assaulted anyone. The timing of the lawsuit and the absence of a criminal complaint and a criminal investigation are the most compelling evidence of the absence of any criminal conduct. If an investigation is commenced, Ben will cooperate fully and Ben will be fully exonerated," David Cornwell said in a statement.

re: #295 HelloDare

Sounds like Dr. Breen, and you don't want to sound like Dr. Breen.

Once again we are preparing to fight the last war (Iraq/Afghanistan). The next war will probably require F-22 class aircraft, until we run out, at which point we will lose.

Let me ask a simple question. If the secretary of defense does not want or feel the need for more planes, and the Pentagon does not want more planes, why should we listen to the congressmen that represent districts that build the plane ?
The days of piloted 300 million dollar piloted fighter are over. It's a silly argument, since McCain cosponsored the bill to kill it anyway, so the extra planes would not have been built anyway.

re: #300 Kosh's Shadow

They're just a couple of steps away from putting on Nikes, drinking kool-aid, and waiting for the next comet.
And they take some actual science (classifying potential civilizations), and a real, if overly popularized scientist, to give themselves a veneer of respectability.

Kaku is one of those ones who is on the edge of going off the derech. He isn't nothing. He does have some accomplishments, but he is very Saganized but without the actual standing of Sagan. He is also a lot more "out there."

I'll take on Detroit.. If they had a Defense like the Steelers even in the motor city you could have a QB called Joey and be winners...
Even with Peyton..We didn't win the SB until our defense got healthy and we knocked the shit out of people.. Ask the Ravens..I'll bet a few of them still can't walk today...Sanders and our Defense just blew offenses up...

Your defense got Dungy. When Dungy was in Tampa, we tried to get the Indy offensive coordinator, but they wouldn't let us talk to him.

New agers are just as bad and just as annoying as creationists IMHO.

At least the creationists can say they got it from their parents, and there is therefore some room for rational thought alongside some clearly non-scientific ideas.
I just can't stand these people who make up their own deities, picking and choosing them from various Dungeons & Dragons manuals and tuning those characters to compensate for whatever empty sickness the people suffer from, and then insist that we all play along.
And by "play along", I mean somehow, through almost superhuman force of will, refrain from mocking these pathetic creatures, these sad broken toilets of men and their pretensions to sanity.

Do you know that the United States Navy was taken to court (I presume this was thrown out) by a shitty little pocket of self-proclaimed "Satanists" who demanded they be authorized to erect an altar to Satan behind the boiler? Can't find a link, but I remember it.

Van Jones at Discover the Networks

Became a Communist in the aftermath of the 1992 "Rodney King riots" in Los Angeles
Founded the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights in 1996
Was active in the anti-Iraq War demonstrations organized by International ANSWER
Served as a board member of the Rainforest Action Network and Free Press
In March 2009, President Barack Obama named Jones to be his so-called “Green Jobs Czar.”

Born in 1968 in rural West Tennessee, Van Jones earned a B.A. degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin and then attended Yale Law School. During his years at Yale, Jones served as an intern with the San Francisco-based Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights (LCCR), which views the United States as an irredeemably racist nation and “champions the legal rights of people of color, poor people, immigrants and refugees, with a special commitment to African-Americans.”

Jones says that he first became politically radicalized in the aftermath of the deadly April 1992 Los Angeles riots which erupted shortly after four L.A. police officers who had beaten the infamous Rodney King were exonerated in court. “I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th,” says Jones, who is black, “and then the verdicts came down on April 29th. By August, I was a communist.”...

STORM also had ties to the South African Communist Party and it revered Amilcar Cabral, the late Marxist revolutionary leader (of Guinea-Bissau and the Cape Verde Islands) who lauded Lenin as “the greatest champion of the national liberation of the peoples.” (In 2006 Van Jones would name his own newborn son “Cabral” -- in Amilcar Cabral’s honor.)

parapsychology is a discredited pseudo science that revolves around "psychic phenomena." It's ESP, Ghosts and telepathy etc... There were some reasonable experiments that were done back in the day - which never found an actual psychic.

TWO WEEK INTENSIVE IN ADVANCED SHAMANIC HEALING
Sunday, March 18 – Friday, March 30
Location: IONS
101 San Antonio Road
Petaluma, CA
Presenter(s): Foundation for Shamanic Studies
Summary: Originated by Michael Harner, this intensive training in advanced core shamanism is described by former participants as “amazing,” “transformative,” “life-changing,” and “the most important experience of my life.” A variety of advanced methods are practiced in this residential program, including extraction healing, soul retrieval, psychopomp work, divination, and work with the spirits of nature. There will also be work that is not included in FSS weekend workshops, such as selected advanced healing methods, the dream dance, explorations, and initiatory experiences.

Taught by Alicia L. Gates
Assisted by Amanda Foulger
Two discussion sessions with guest Michael Harner

Alicia L. Gates has studied with Michael Harner for more than twenty years. She has worked with thousands of shamanic clients and has a profound depth of knowledge and practical experience. “Alicia is an outstanding shamanic practitioner and healer, and in recent years, working alongside me, has been the principal teacher of the West Coast Three-Year programs and the Two-Week Intensives,” states Michael Harner. Alicia brings to her teaching a clarity and certainty about shamanic healing methods that can only come through long experience and a deep love for the work. Says one workshop participant: “I felt very connected to Alicia and most grateful that someone as gifted and deeply connected to source energy is willing to share her considerable talent and knowledge with us.”

406 OldLineTexan  Tue, Jul 21, 2009 3:09:41pm

The Air Force doesn't want the F-22? From Wiki:

In 1981 the United States Air Force (USAF) developed a requirement for a new air superiority fighter, the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF), to replace the capability of the F-15 Eagle, primarily the F-15A, B, C and D variants. ATF was a demonstration and validation program undertaken by the USAF to develop a next-generation air superiority fighter to counter emerging worldwide threats, including development and proliferation of Soviet-era Su-27 "Flanker"-class fighter aircraft. It was envisaged that the ATF would incorporate emerging technologies including advanced alloys and composite materials, advanced fly-by-wire flight control systems, higher power propulsion systems, and low-observable/stealth technology.

A request for proposal (RFP) was issued in July 1986, and two contractor teams, Lockheed/Boeing/General Dynamics and Northrop/McDonnell Douglas were selected in October 1986 to undertake a 50-month demonstration/validation phase, culminating in the flight test of two prototypes, the YF-22 and the YF-23.

On 23 April 1991 the USAF ended the design and test flight competition by announcing Lockheed's YF-22 as the winner. It was anticipated at the time that 650 aircraft would be ordered.

re: #321 avanti

Let me ask a simple question. If the secretary of defense does not want or feel the need for more planes, and the Pentagon does not want more planes, why should we listen to the congressmen that represent districts that build the plane ?
The days of piloted 300 million dollar piloted fighter are over. It's a silly argument, since McCain cosponsored the bill to kill it anyway, so the extra planes would not have been built anyway.

It's the whole mindset that we need to make do with fewer units of any given type, fewer top-line aircraft, fewer aircraft carriers, fewer army divisions, etc., etc.

At some point we're going to get into a situation where we start running out of something critical, like air supremacy fighters, and we're going to face the choice of losing or playing the nuclear trump card. Which we might not want to do if the Chinese or the Russians were on the periphery of the conflict.

As for McCain, he's probably just pissed that the Navy didn't get their own F-22.

Maybe. Just a note. McCain wasn't a fighter pilot. He flew an A-4 Skyhawk off the Oriskany. His primary role was in attack and bombing sorties. The fighter pilots flew either the F-4B or the F-4J. He had little knowledge of ACM.

And as much as I respect McCain's service to our country, i am afraid he best days are behind him and were last year also. And he can take his little lap poodle Graham with him into the sunset.

Don't tell me "they don't want it".

They have nearly 200 of them, and, in nearly eight years of war, they haven't found a use for them. They may have wanted them, but that doesn't mean they want more.

I didn't say you were. I am saying that I am not a top pentagon strategist with access to projections of our needs. It is quite possible that the money for the F-22 goes into more body armor, supplies and transport for our infantry, and honestly you do not need F-22's to fight Taliban, you need ground pounders.

It is also possible that we are blowing a golden opportunity to have an even more awesome air force.

I agree with that. Based on his experience and General Norton A. Schwartz's experience I don't think we're getting the kind of knowledge we need regarding the role of the F-22 in light of the SU-30 and other potential adversaries.

Here's what the General says

"We are often asked: How many F-22s does the Air Force need? The answer, of course, depends on what we are being asked to do. When the program began, late in the Cold War, it was estimated that 740 would be needed. Since then, the Defense Department has constantly reassessed how many major combat operations we might be challenged to conduct, where such conflicts might arise, whether or how much they might overlap, what are the strategies and capabilities of potential opponents, and U.S. objectives.
These assessments have concluded that, over time, a progressively more sophisticated mix of aircraft, weapons and networking capabilities will enable us to produce needed combat power with fewer platforms. As requirements for fighter inventories have declined and F-22 program costs have risen, the department imposed a funding cap and in December 2004 approved a program of 183 aircraft.

This is true. I have no idea what may or may not be on the books. Again,

It is possible that we are looking at a case where we got the wrong call and turned down a golden opportunity.

I know more about the Navy than I do about the Air Force. So let me say it is also possible this is like SeaWolf. Every argument that you are making could and was used in the defense of that program. Further, it really, really is an amazing boat.

However, the Virginia is too and it is more flexible to the needs of the different roles the Navy is asked to fulfill - and it costs less when you adjust for inflation.

re: #475 Son of the Black Dog

How did a truck driver become USAF Chief of Staff?

Found this:

Defense Secretary Robert Gates knew he had a problem in early summer 2008. The U.S. Air Force was becoming a public punch line. He had just fired its senior military and civilian leaders after several embarrassing nuclear mishaps. The service was again stumbling to buy replacements for two aging airframes. And its top leaders were resisting Gates’ directions on war policies.

The secretary wanted to send a message and shake things up. "We needed a change of leadership to bring a new perspective and especially to underscore the importance of accountability," Gates said last June. His search for a new chief led him not to the Air Force’s proud ranks of flyers trained to put weapons on targets, but to an officer with a background in special operations and logistics: Gen. Schwartz. All previous service chiefs were either fighter or bomber pilots. Message sent...

Gates names non-fighter pilot to head Air Force
By Peter Spiegel, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
June 09, 2008

In a sign of how urgently he wants to shake up the Air Force, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates announced today he was appointing the first non-fighter pilot to become the service's chief of staff in more than 25 years.

The nomination of Gen. Norton A. Schwartz, who is currently head of the Pentagon's transportation command and rose through the ranks as a pilot of military cargo planes, marks a significant break for the Air Force, which has been led by fighter and bomber pilots almost since its inception after World War II...

2 Picked For Top Spots in Air Force
By Josh White
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, June 10, 200

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates yesterday recommended two nominees to the White House to take the top leadership positions in the Air Force, just days after he ousted the service's secretary and chief of staff amid concerns about the security of the nation's nuclear arsenal and other recent shortfalls.

Get this: I always disagreed with the new crop. I was just about distraught in the run-up to Gates' confirmation. I could not figure out why WHY why the President was appointing such a man to that post. Now I know. It was a very canny move to maintain continuity across administrations. So in retrospect, it was a good pick.
It doesn't mean I agree with either of them. I don't have to.
And please don't conflate some military mafia skullduggery or the comments relating to it with the disgusting smear campaign put out by MoveOn.
It doesn't much matter to me whether we get a new AS platform for the Air Force. First off, one of the wrong lessons learned from the Gulf War (despite the perfect example of the Falklands) is that an Air Force is sufficient for victory. The problem with an Air Force is that is power decreases rapidly with distance from a big-ass base and a limitless supply of fuel.
Now the NAVY, on the other hand should get a first rate suite of aircraft. You know, like we fielded in the Cold War.
When the phone rings at 3 AM, the President does not ask, "Quick, how soon can King Khalid Airbase arrive on station?"

It doesn't matter what happened at a specific event. I am against 'hate crimes' - no matter who they protect.

As far as my personal experience, look at my profile.

I have been in the midst of protesters who hate the military. I didn't ask for more protections. Law enforcement needs to prosecute any assault that happens - what you are proposing is that at a particular event, someone who attacks a group of people consisting of military and some civilian bystanders would be prosecuted more severely for the crimes against the military victims than against the civilians. This is repugnant to a soldier, who wants to protect civilians in preference to his personal safety.

I am sick to death of politicians appointing their lawyer friends to positions that require an comprehensive understanding of how scientific knowledge is generated and revised. So many lawyers approach science like they approach the law. Essentially, in law, the "facts" matter only to the degree that they can be marshaled into an argument. There is no objective truth that is unalterable, only arguments that can change how facts are interpreted. Lawyers then extend that thinking to science, with no respect for how scientists think of facts as the bases of designing experiments to elicit further facts, all in the pursuit of a better approximation of objective truth. This is the fundamental difference between the law and science. And public policy with respect to science is repeatedly distorted, because the policy is set by politicians, who are overwhelmingly lawyers, who simply don't understand what they are talking about! It absolutely drives me crazy, and this appointment of Vann Jones is just a more egregious example of what occurs all the time. I'm SICK OF IT!!!

Agreed. Obama's team is uniquely unqualified for their jobs. Whether we're talking about 'Energy Secretary' Chu, who no doubt understands energy at the banging-particles-together level but who knows bupkus about getting coal (or gas, or oil, or just about anything) from a hole in the ground to a power plant boiler or Corvette gas tank, to Holdren and this guy, to Jackson and Browner who are just party-line zealots, they're at best useless individually and at worst a collective existential hazard to our quality of life.
