Tour De France: Armstrong Slips to Fourth Place, Contador Widens Lead

Sports • Views: 2,111

The Tour de France is heading into the final stretch, and Lance Armstrong is still within striking distance of the win — but he’ll have to really dig deep to surpass Astana teammate Alberto Contador, who is looking incredibly strong this year, rocketing away from the pack on difficult climbs: Lance Armstrong drops to fourth as Alberto Contador moves closer to Tour de France title.

LE GRAND BORNAND, France — Alberto Contador tightened his grip on the Tour de France when he survived attacks by the Schleck brothers in the 105.3-mile 17th Stage on Wednesday.

The Spaniard was the only rider strong enough to stay with Luxembourg’s Frank and Andy Schleck in the last two of five climbs and the three finished together, Frank winning the stage ahead of the Tour leader and his younger sibling.

If the brothers’ repeated strikes could not wear down the 2007 Tour champion, the did hurt Lance Armstrong and Briton Bradley Wiggins, who lost touch in the hardest climb of the day, the Col de Romme.

Armstrong finished 2 minutes, 18 seconds adrift, which was not enough for him to keep his place on the podium.

Contador now leads Andy Schleck by 2:26 with Frank Schleck third, 3:25 behind.

Seven-time Tour champion Armstrong slipped to fourth, 3:55 behind. Wiggins, who was third at the start, sixth, 4:53 adrift.

ESPN has a cool Flash-based Tour de France Tracker with lots of info on the race.

Lance has got almost zero chance. Should be a team 1,2,3 though.

I believe Lance will take back some time from the Schleck brothers on the individual Time Trial, especially Frank. I think that he has a very good chance of the podium and coming in third in Paris. The final stage (other than the flat stage to Paris) is straight up Mont Ventoux which climbs almost 1700 m in just 30 km. I think Lance has been pacing himself through the race which was the right move at 37 years of age.

He will be able to dig very deep on that final mountain stage and I believe will be able to stay with the Schlecks that day.

Go Lance and Vive Le Tour!

Lance was interviewed Sunday and as much as said he does not now think he can win. He said he would work for the team and for Contador. He has been doing so for the last two days, and in so doing, demonstrating that he is a class act.

I am sure he can gain back some time during the time trial and be poised to share the podium. An all Astana finish would be great.

read a story years ago in Playboy about AJ Foyt at Le Mans...fell over at the start, could not get his car going, could not get onto the track, and the French were jeering the young Texas dirt tracker...he finally disappeared down the track and minutes went by until the cars started to appear again...low and behold Foyt came roaring down in front of the stands, arm straight up out of the cockpit, giving them all the fuck you bird...he had lapped the entire field

I hope Lance has always been clean, but I think we can never know for sure. They are keeping blood and urine samples for eight years now, so they can test later for stuff they don't even know about now. But I'll never trust the French labs. (I wonder who gets to open the eight year old urine? "Ah, 2009! A fine vintage...")

JPOST: Leftist Jews cannot ignore problems with Obama

Too many articles lambasting the continued Jewish support for US President Barack Obama have overlooked a crucial point: Many American Jews agree with his positions on Israel. Like him, they think Israel should completely freeze the settlements, withdraw to the 1967 lines and divide Jerusalem, and that peace would break out if only it did so. None of these views are shared by a majority of Israelis. But as long as American Jews hold them, expecting them to echo mainstream Israeli concerns over these policies is delusional.

What is genuinely puzzling, however, is why Obama supporters appear equally deaf to the anguished cries of Israel's left, which has long advocated precisely these policies. When the editorial staff of Haaretz, a bastion of Israel's hard left, pens three opinion pieces criticizing Obama in the space of 10 days, it ought to be clear even to left-of-center American Jews that Obama has an Israel problem.
...
Finally, while "Obama assumed he did a great thing when he spoke in Cairo about the Jewish people's suffering in the Holocaust," the "implied distortion: that we deserve a state because of the Holocaust" is "infuriating."

"As a leader who aspires to solve the problems of the world through dialogue," Marcus concluded, "we expect him to come to Israel and declare here courageously, before the entire world, that our connection to this land began long before the Israeli-Arab conflict and the Holocaust, and that 4,000 years ago, Jews already stood on the ground where he now stands."

In short, Obama is placing the onus entirely on Israel, thus absolving the Palestinians of any need to amend their behavior.

Moreover, by basing Israel's claim to statehood on the Holocaust rather than the Jews' historic connection to this land, he has fed the Arab fantasy that Jews are colonialist interlopers with no right to be here, and that the Palestinians are being sacrificed to atone for European misdeeds - thereby fostering Arab intransigence and unwillingness to end the conflict.

OT, back from car shopping with the new $4500 matching cash for clunker rebate from Chrysler which would give you 9K off a new Chrysler by scrapping my old Ford 15 MPG PU. So far, totally pissed off with the Chrysler dealers, and their attitude.

I found if they had a 20K car marked down to 16K today, the rebate would apply to the 20K sticker tomorrow when the new $4500 "rebate" goes into effect saving jack shit.
I wanted to buy a American car, but I may be a 3 Korean car family at this rate, since they are made here now, have a 10 year 100K mile warranty. I'll try the GM and Ford dealers first.

Obama *wince* played a pretty good wingman and loves to shoot...Plus he is probably a foot taller so she isn't shooting over him...
I did a review here of the SI story on his High School coach last summer..
Obama is a ball hog and shoots way to much...Boy is he following the script or what? Obama the ball hog that thinks he is better than he really is...:)

Hoops, you are confusing this with logic.
But hey, they called Barry Obomber because his game was alwys outsise . No rebounds.
See Ya

re: #171 Erik The Red

There must be something wrong with my 11 year old. She has a rocket arm on her. Hopefully with us being in the US now she will get more use out of it. Softball is almost no existent in S. Africa.

Throwing like a girl does not necessitate throwing slowly.

I'm always confused
Obama played a practice with the Tar Heels last summer...He drove the lane and a player stepped in and knocked him to his ass..
Coach Williams called the player over and said..' you see that guy over there with the earpiece? He is secret service..The next time you pull that stunt he will probably shoot you.'
Obama got to drive the lanes...

re: #158 Sharmuta

Possibly a connection issue. I had this issue until I discovered I had a bad port between my computer and modem. Once I changed ports- the problem was gone.

Sharm...what if I'm on wireless?

It wasn't him..Some bench kid. I'll check the name again.. I can't recall and read it one of my SI's...I'd love to play 3 on 3 against Obama...Just curling on the backside and meeting him at the rebound point... I'm smiling right now thinking about it...

Agreed.

I've seen @ a 95mph fastball in baseball.
I've seen @ a 65mph fastball in softball.

They are both bringin' it.

re: #125 Wyatt Earp

He has a huge ego, and wanted to prove it to everyone - at the expense of the team.

Either his ego - or he miscalculated.
