Yeah, Barry…about some of those ideas…
“House Democrats have lots of potential targets for higher taxes as they aim to expand health care coverage to reach the roughly 50 million that experts say are uninsured. Also under consideration are higher alcohol taxes, increases to the Medicare payroll tax and a value-added tax, a sort of national sales tax, of up to 1.5 percent or more … The [other] tax options include: increasing the price of soda and other sugary drinks by 10 cents a can, applying a potential 2 percent income tax increase to single taxpayers earning more than $200,000 a year and households earning more than $250,000, a new employer payroll tax could target 3 percent of employers’ health care expenditures, taxing employer-provided health insurance benefits above certain levels … House Democrats planned to unveil a draft of their sweeping health care bill Friday … The draft, being released at a news conference … was not expected to mention the potentially unpopular tax options.” (Erica Werner, “House Eyes New Taxes As Senators Pare Health Bill,” The Associated Press, 6/19/09)

We are not in any WAY, SHAPE or FORM discussing “Health Care” in the language of English. We are discussing INSURANCE. Health care is something most folks take care of themselves, by diet, exercise and habits. I practice 2 of the 3. My “habits” suck - let the truth be known - I drink too much coffee, smoke too many cigarettes, and drink too much alcohol. Maybe that combination keeps me healthy - at least mentally.

It’s such a fallacy. Everyone who needs healthcare can go to the hospital and get healthcare. The hospital cannot turn anyone away because they can’t pay. There are people that are without health insurance.
THAT is a fallacy, it’s called a strawman:
The problem isn’t that a hospital will not take care of emergencies.
The problems stem from having to pay health bills that they can’t afford (and go bankrupt because of the costs).
There are additional problems associated with what happens when you have money, get cancer, don’t have insurance. You can’t get treatment, they are not required to give you chemo.

New “Medicare Advisory Council” Would Have Broad Mandate, Little Accountability.
“That would be a remarkable shift of power on its own, but the president’s proposal doesn’t stop there. Not only would the council make recommendations on payment updates, it would also have the authority to propose other ‘Medicare reforms’ which would go into effect unless Congress could muster veto override majorities in opposition. What are ‘Medicare reforms’? From the write-up, it seems they could be just about anything. Changes in beneficiary cost-sharing. New rules for establishing qualified hospitals and doctors. Penalties for physicians who don’t follow government guidelines. Pretty much anything except for the payroll tax and premium structure. The only parameters are that the ‘reforms’ must improve the quality of medical care and the efficiency of Medicare operations.” (James C. Capretta, “On-The-Fly Audacity,” The New Atlantis’s “Diagnosis” Blog,” 7/20/09)

On the homepage of Cook County Hospital’s website:
Cook County Hospital was founded in 1855 with one mission: Provide quality health care to all citizens regardless of their ability to pay.
We are a world-renowned health care facility, that is simultaneously advancing the frontiers of medicine and remaining true to our mission, despite the economic challenges of providing health care to those most in need.
Here is a hospital that takes care of people in spite of ability to pay. And I know people personally that go to the hospital with every intention not to pay because they can’t And the hospital did not turn them away for not being able to pay.

Repost from the nirther thread with an addendum.
Healthcare does actually need a lot of work in this country. OF course Obama’s plan is terrible.
It is, really bad.
But what do the Republicans have to counter with in terms of ideas of their own? Not sound bites, but actual worked out plans.
So let’s be really clear about what this means.
Obama has a lot of policies and ideas that will be bad for this country and our allies.
Someone should have well wrought logical alternatives to present and argue for. The natural people to do this would be the GOP.
However, in the absence of any actual plans or ideas of their own - other than whining a lot and shouting soundbites - we see open acts of desperation.
We see them pandering to the Creationists more than ever - why because to a creationist, so long as you tag the anti Darwin line, you don’t actually have to have any policies of your own.
We see them pandering to the Nirthers. Why here is another crap flinging group that you don’t need to say anything constructive to. I mean the revolution sounds grand don’t it? Who cares if we have no plans for after…
We see them fuming all over Sotomayor and trying their damned level best to make this into a racially charged bit of scare tactics… Ohhh BOOGA BOOGA, the big bad Latina woman is coming to take your jobs and livelyhoods by making it impossible for white people to compete with affirmative action… BOOOGA BOOGA BE SCARED white Boys be scared…
Uh… Huh… so ok, you have fired a broadside “for the honor of the fleet” in her case… Do you have anything CONSTRUCTIVE to say? Ohhh, no you don’t that would mean actually having ideas that go beyond slinging mud…
We see them pandering to the folksie folks. Why, because so long as you are a cute soccer mom, you don’t need to actually know anything or have any real policies of your own. Hey, she can even run out on her elected office, true believers don’t care about things like actually doing the job you were elected to do… Sorry guys, Palin is forever on my shit list for cutting and running, even if you love her, can you agree that this shows a certain lack of sense of duty?
And who really is running the GOP these days?
What we see all over is a complete paucity of ideas. What we see is desperation. This is just great because, you know, unless someone has some actual ideas that are workable, to counter Obama with, you got bubkas.
And this is a pity. It really is. Because Obama does need to be countered on lots of things. Only the GOP, through only knowing how to cry wolf, and trip over its own feet, has made it so Obama’s real wolves won’t be noticed if someone calls a warning.
Great show losers. You deserved to be tossed out of office. After your party splits inot an isolationist party and a religious party, you will be gladly replaced by something new and more sensible - after the Lefties have run this nation into the ground.

“In cutting deals with hospitals and drug makers, President Barack Obama is giving a private inside track to special interests that’s at odds with his promise to make policy in the open… He pledged to open government and let the public and news media hold his administration accountable… ‘We’ll have the negotiations televised on C-SPAN, so that people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their constituents, and who are making arguments on behalf of the drug companies or the insurance companies,’ he said then.” (Sharon Theimer, “Promises, Promises: Do Obama Deals Break Pledge?” The Associated Press, 7/21/09)

Here is a hospital that takes care of people in spite of ability to pay. And I know people personally that go to the hospital with every intention not to pay because they can’t And the hospital did not turn them away for not being able to pay.
again, the problem isn’t if someone can’t pay. The problem is if someone can pay but the cost of paying leads them to bankruptcy.

Chicago Tribune Editorial: Government-Run Health Care Will Crowd Out Private Competitors.
“But the federal government isn’t competition. It is the health care equivalent of Bigfoot, with so many Americans on its rolls that it dictates prices for doctors, drugs, and other benefits. It sets low prices, to be sure, lower than many insurers are able to match. But that just means those doctors and hospitals recoup the losses by shifting costs onto those with private insurance — amounting to an estimated $89 billion a year, one insurance exec told a Senate committee a few months ago. A new public option may start small. But it could easily crowd out private plans depending on how premiums, benefits and subsidies are structured.” (Editorial, “Hope and Experience,” The Chicago Tribune, 6/16/09)

Australia has free health care, I had to call the ambulance for myself a few days ago, home alone, extreme pain, almost losing consciousness, ambulance states.”it may be awhile, we are very busy”. Every person and company that gets an electric bill pays $20 on each bill just for ambulance service. Think about how much money that is, but they don’t have enough ambulances and personnel? Where are the politicians putting that money? Point, what are the priorities of politicains and can they be trusted.

We all must be prepared for the coming euthanasia that will affect all persons - from the unborn child found to have a mental or physical defect via amniocentesis (Obama: “no woman should be punished with a baby”) to the young adult found to be obese “of his own doing” to a middle aged alcoholic to your own parents if they are older than 60 (risk assessment: your parents will not give back more than they would take from the State). Unfortunately, I fear that the Catholic Church will, once again, stand alone in the fight. After we have lost our hospitals and been driven underground, the Evangelicals (who have been the only other Christians to stand shoulder to shoulder with us) will come to the table too late. Without the Catholic Church to take the heat, what can they do? This is truly Hitler-style fascism where all decisions are based on what you can contribute to the State. Unbelievable that we’ve come so far so fast. But Obama promised change and to change this nation “brick by brick and block by block”.
