Obama Plays a Race Card from the Bottom of the Deck

Here’s audio of Sgt. James Crowley of the Cambridge Police Department, responding to Barack Obama’s statement that Cambridge police “acted stupidly” in the arrest of Professor Gates: Stg. James Crowley, Cambridge Police on WEEI.

Crowley seems very credible. The President may have made a serious political mistake when he couldn’t resist playing the race card, and smeared an entire police department without having the facts of the case.

The white police sergeant who arrested black Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. said Thursday President Barack Obama was “way off base” claiming Cambridge officers acted “stupidly” during the incident.

Sgt. James Crowley responded to Gates’ home near Harvard University last week to investigate a report of a burglary and demanded Gates show him identification. Police say Gates at first refused and accused the officer of racism.

Gates was charged with disorderly conduct. The charge was dropped Tuesday, and Gates has since demanded an apology from Crowley.

“I acted appropriately,” Crowley told WBZ Radio’s Carl Stevens Thursday.

“Mister Gates was given plenty of opportunities to stop what he was doing. He didn’t. He acted very irrational he controlled the outcome of that event.”

“There was a lot of yelling, there was references to my mother, something you wouldn’t expect from anybody that should be grateful that you were there investigating a report of a crime in progress, let alone a Harvard University professor.”

According to the police report, Crowley asked Gates to talk outside, to which he responded “Yeah, I’ll speak with your mama outside.”

I saw this growing up in NOLA— it is the politics of payback—pure and simple. Gates was tired, pissed, frustrated and probably justified in that a neighbor called it in and did not recognize him trying to break into his own house. (of course Gates could have knocked on a neighbor’s door—if he lived in the kind of neighborhood where one takes the time to know the neighbors). And he head the bad sense to take it out on the poor cop responding to the call.

And if Gates was pitching a hissy on the lawn and waking the neighbors—that’s called disturbing the peace.

A major issue with BHO’s statement is that it ends by noting the disproportionate frequency with which blacks and latinos are stopped by the police. What’s driving me nuts about this (part of what’s driving me nuts anyway) is that this is not even plausibly about profiling - this was not a discretionary stop for the police department; it was a 911 call. The decision to respond had nothing to do with race, ethnicity, neighborhood, time of day, etc. They don’t file through 911 calls and respond disproportionately to the ones that involve minorities. So, even if Crowley’s behavior after he arrived had been motivated by race (which I don’t think it was), racial profiling in the context of officers stopping people has NOTHING to do with this.

Imagine all the facts and all the circumstances identical, but a black police officer instead of a white one. What would have been different?

Everything.

The tired professor would have found the strength to hand over his ID without significant objection. The officer would have gone on his way. No angry shouts, no (alleged) “yo mama” comments, no screams so loud they attracted the neighbors, or embarrassing photos of a raging Skip Gates on the front of the Herald.

All changed, not because of a different cop, but a different Professor Gates.

The Gates who greeted Crowley was a racist. And I know, because the professor said so himself.

I can’t help but wonder if Obama lost health care reform last night because of the focus on this - or whether this was done on purpose to obfuscate the fact that the health care proposals he’s pushing are fiscal insanity and will result in rising taxes, lower quality of care, and would be opposed by most Americans if the true costs of this nonsense were known.

It also suggests that Obama’s incessant pressers have done little to actually inform people about his policies since he repeatedly muddles the message and the media shows itself incapable of asking follow up questions.

Still, I have to hand it to the AP for fact checking Obama on last nite, and coming up with a series of epic fails regarding health care and the economy.

If a passerby saw someone breaking into MY home, I would certainly HOPE that they call the police and that the police come and arrest whoever was doing it. And if that burglar turned out to be me, I would rapidly explain and PROVE I lived there. Otherwise, I would expect — nay, DEMAND — that the officer arrest me for burglary! Otherwise, any burglar could just sweet talk his way out of the arrest by claiming to live in my house.

The police officer was NOT racist. The professor acted like a lunatic and a race-baiting asshole. I have no sympathy for him.

I’m actually getting tired of the historical and current revisionism that takes place regarding racism in this country and the constant caveat that the GOP has to tread carefully in responding to race related issues.

The GOP didn’t filibuster and oppose the Civil Rights Act and the end of Jim Crow - the Democrats did.
The GOP doesn’t have as the President Pro Tem of the Senate a former recruiter for the KKK. The list can go on and on - but the facts have become immaterial as the lie told often enough has been accepted as truth.

It’s time that the GOP reminds some of MLK’s immortal words regarding judging people on the basis of their character and not the color of their skin - and then demonstrate the limits of the character of those who wallow in race politics and rush to play the race card and panders to minorities.

I got busted by a speed trap once, was doing 50 in a 35 on a stretch of back road at like 4 in the morning. As soon as I saw the cop, I pulled over and got out my license and registration. The cop barely turned on his lights and didn’t even move his car. He came over said, “Well, I guess you know what you were doing?” “Yup, here’s my stuff.” He comes back a minute later and tells me, “Had to run you to check for warrants, but you didn’t try to lie and you didn’t make me chase you. Slow down and have a good morning.” I went on my merry way with no harm and no foul.

The lesson: Don’t mess with a cop and they won’t mess with you. And I learned that without having a Harvard education.

Somehow Manson got a copy and walked into court parading it in front of the jury. Since then Presidents have been unusually circumspect about commenting about individual legal matters. Apparently Barack has yet to pass President 101 class.

I got busted by a speed trap once, was doing 50 in a 35 on a stretch of back road at like 4 in the morning. As soon as I saw the cop, I pulled over and got out my license and registration. The cop barely turned on his lights and didn’t even move his car. He came over said, “Well, I guess you know what you were doing?” “Yup, here’s my stuff.” He comes back a minute later and tells me, “Had to run you to check for warrants, but you didn’t try to lie and you didn’t make me chase you. Slow down and have a good morning.” I went on my merry way with no harm and no foul.

The lesson: Don’t mess with a cop and they won’t mess with you. And I learned that without having a Harvard education.

If I understand this story correctly, Gates was trying to break into his own house. An officer responding to a neighbor’s call asked him to identify himself, and he refused—and has decided to characterize this as “racist.”

It appears that despite his formidable educational background Gates does not understand that the officer had no way of knowing who he was unless he produced ID—and that the officer was, in fact, protecting Gates as a local homeowner precisely as he should have been doing.

The White House says President Barack Obama was not calling a Cambridge, Mass., police officer stupid when he criticized last week’s arrest of black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr.

Spokesman Robert Gibbs said Thursday that Obama felt “cooler heads on all sides should have prevailed” once the officer realized Gates was in his own home.

On Wednesday Obama said the police “acted stupidly” when they arrested Gates even after it was clear that he was not a burglary suspect. Gibbs said that Obama did not regret the remark, but wanted to clarify that he was not calling the arresting officer stupid.

A major issue with BHO’s statement is that it ends by noting the disproportionate frequency with which blacks and latinos are stopped by the police. What’s driving me nuts about this (part of what’s driving me nuts anyway) is that this is not even plausibly about profiling - this was not a discretionary stop for the police department; it was a 911 call. The decision to respond had nothing to do with race, ethnicity, neighborhood, time of day, etc. They don’t file through 911 calls and respond disproportionately to the ones that involve minorities. So, even if Crowley’s behavior after he arrived had been motivated by race (which I don’t think it was), racial profiling in the context of officers stopping people has NOTHING to do with this.

Actually, Gates has said that he was glad the police responded to the neighbor’s call. Like any citizen, he wants them to address the possibility that a crime may be occurring. The issue is all about what happened when the police arrived.

I misread the report.

But, in all fairness, the other side of the equation (and not saying it is right) is that for many years, African Americans tried to do as other American with law enforcement—cooperate and be respectful—only to end up in deep trouble. The general response for many is now to be stand-offish if not confrontational in order not to lose control of the situation and to defend themselves. I am sure there are bully cops out there of all colors and perhaps that is a necessary way to react.

But, if you live in an upscale neighborhood—and it’s the middle of the day—and its’ your own damn home—and you and your companion are middle aged and well attired-take a minute and explain to the nice officer why you and your manservant, Kato, are acting like Laurel and Hardy.

The point of the statement is not revealed in a rational analysis of the narrative. Obama intention was to place the image of a “n*gg*r getting shot by the police” in the media consciousness. It worked. That’s what I mean by NPL technique. Obama used a crude rhyme, imagery and humor to paint an ugly picture.

So lets see how it could have gone. Neighbor spies someone trying to bash in your door and calls the cops. Cops actually show up quickly. Questions the caller who has responsibly stayed on the scene. Cop then goes to the door and sees someone inside. He doesn’t draw a weapon or anything he just politely asks to speak to the person outside. Person inside the house, comes to the door and then outside and says, “it is my house and I was coming home and the front door was jammed. Tried to force it open but ultimately went to the back door. But it sure is nice that the police are so alert.” Cop - “Sir can I see some form of identification.” Homeowner; “sure here is my driver’s license.”

I’m sorry, but if you’re face to face with an officer holding handcuffs in front of you, you really should not be surprised if he/she uses them. The rule is the officer always has the upper hand - if are aggressive, you get cuffed; if you pull a knife, you get shot, etc.

Someone that’s in a life or death job like that has to protect themself first, period. Sorry Professor Gates was arrested, but it’s a no brainer.

I’m actually getting tired of the historical and current revisionism that takes place regarding racism in this country and the constant caveat that the GOP has to tread carefully in responding to race related issues.

The GOP didn’t filibuster and oppose the Civil Rights Act and the end of Jim Crow - the Democrats did.
The GOP doesn’t have as the President Pro Tem of the Senate a former recruiter for the KKK. The list can go on and on - but the facts have become immaterial as the lie told often enough has been accepted as truth.

It’s time that the GOP reminds some of MLK’s immortal words regarding judging people on the basis of their character and not the color of their skin - and then demonstrate the limits of the character of those who wallow in race politics and rush to play the race card and panders to minorities.

I’m not saying it’s fair, but it is the playing field on which we must play.

A friend of mine who used to be an Assistant US Attorney here in DC told me that black DC cops would quite cheerfully tell her - off the record - that yes, of COURSE they engage in “racial profiling”; and that it cuts in more than one direction. Profiling has become a dirty word. IMO, profiling consists mainly of applying your experience to make the decisions that are necessary in any job. That is your job - to apply your experience and observations to come up with the right solution..

I hate to be in agreement with conservatives, who in my honest opinion are asshats when it comes to racial insensitivity, but I have to side with the cops on this one. I abhor racial profiling, which is a huge issue in my community, but I don’t think this was that. Rather, this was an unfortunate misunderstanding and Professor Gates overreacted. I think he is a great man.

I think both Gates and the police both released a statement that said basically there was some blame on both sides in the heat of the moment. Basically, I think Gates got snippy with the cop because he assumed the cop was reacting to his skin color, and the cop and Gates got in a pissing contest. Guilty or innocent, black or white, when a cop gives you a order, shut up and follow it.

Are some of those racially based? Most likely. Every cop — every American, actually — does a bit of subconscious “racial profiling” when assessing who and who is not up to some kind of shenanigans. Actually, it’s not so much “racial profiling,” as “appearance profiling,” meaning that someone who looks like a gangbanging thug is presumed to be a criminal, whatever their actual skin tone or apparent “race.” And anyone who does something suspicious — such as breaking into a home — is pre-judged to be a criminal as well. Which is not remarkable.

So why, of all the arrests and mistaken arrests in the United States every single day, did Obama choose to weigh in on this one? Could it be that the arresstee just happened to be a fellow race-baiting academic who instantly whipped up the grievance theater machinery? Naaah — couldn’t be.

If a passerby saw someone breaking into MY home, I would certainly HOPE that they call the police and that the police come and arrest whoever was doing it. And if that burglar turned out to be me, I would rapidly explain and PROVE I lived there. Otherwise, I would expect — nay, DEMAND — that the officer arrest me for burglary! Otherwise, any burglar could just sweet talk his way out of the arrest by claiming to live in my house.

The police officer was NOT racist. The professor acted like a lunatic and a race-baiting asshole. I have no sympathy for him.

I wonder if Gates just marked his home as a “free-burglary” zone? I mean, which of his neighbors is gonna call the cops if they see somebody doing something suspicious on this porch from this point forward?

I locked myself out on my own balcony one time. I had to slide open a bathroom window and crawl in. Cops were at my door in 15 minutes, guns DRAWN - asking me to step outside of my own apartment and provide identification. I’m white. I didn’t resent being asked to justify being in my own apartment - after all, I slithered into a bathroom window - which is not the typical way to enter an apartment.

Two members of my extended family are cops. Great guys - the opposite of the dumb racist cop stereotype. They are lowkey, aren’t in love with the power, and really care about the job they do. They have both told me at separate times that:

1) You get what you give. You treat a cop like a racists douchebag, and he’s a lot less likely to cut you any slack. You scream and yell before they have had a chance to determine who you are and how safe you are, and you are really likely to wind up in a jail cell. Its just the way it is… and I find this hard to argue with.

2) They profile all the time. Not by race - although that might be part of it - but by a million other things. Broken taillights, attitude, will someone look at you at a traffic light, expired tags, running a red, car make and model, tinting, etc. etc. They are right 90% of the time.

I don’t doubt there are many bad cops - I’ve run into plenty of them. But assuming they are all bad, is its own form of discrimination. I don’t think this situation is as much about racism, as it is about chaffing at authority in general. Some people - black or white - simply don’t want to have to be questioned by anyone. If someone were to hang a “racist” tag on anyone in this situation, shouldn’t it be the neighbor? Once a cop is called - they are simply following the routine at that point…

Yeah, this was definitely a mistake by Obama. The question may have caught him off guard. He should have said after noting that all the facts are not in yet something like “it would therefore be inappropriate for me as president to involve myself in this issue.” He may end up doing this and admitting his mistake if the story gets too large. While it’s not 100% certain what happened, what seems most likely and what witnesses apart from the officer and the professor will likely confirm is that the cop was just doing his job in responding to the call, and the professor was just belligerent, uncooperative, and accusative from the start.

I had something like this happen to me as well. I was visiting my mother from out of town and set the alarm off when she was at work. I remembered the code too late and the police came. They asked for ID, I have a different last name than my mother. They asked me how I got in, I showed them the key. There was a photo of me and my mother near the door, I showed them. I had obviously been able to turn the alarm off too. They were not nice at all, in fact I would say they were suspicious and curt. In other words, they were doing their job. I was polite and calm the entire time. They left after only a few minutes and I thanked them and apologized for the trouble.
If I wanted to be arrested like Gates, I’m sure I could have easily escalated the situation and managed it.

When is the last time a POTUS dove into the details of a local scuffle? Black men are arrested every day for far more bullshitty reasons, yet Obama decides to hop on the crazy train with this one and say the police acted stupidly.

Dumbass professor (is that an oxymoron?) gets locked out of the house, the neighbor sees someone prowling around, calls the police, and then the absent minded professor gets all uppity when the police ask him to identify himself (“No, I’m not a burglar. I own this house. Here’s my ID. See? Sorry for the misunderstanding, officer.”), is insulting, and claims racism.

I know if I locked myself out of the house, and the police responded to a neighbor’s report, they’d probably ask me for ID. More than likely, I’d be so embarrassed I’d be laughing about it. No, not this guy.

There are innocent people of all colors sitting in prison right now, waiting to prove their innocence. But Obama thinks this snotty prick is a victim, and needs to comment about it.

Puh-lease.

A friend of mine who used to be an Assistant US Attorney here in DC told me that black DC cops would quite cheerfully tell her - off the record - that yes, of COURSE they engage in “racial profiling”; and that it cuts in more than one direction. For instance, if they see a white guy in a BMW on upper Georgia Ave. at 2 am, they’ll wonder whether he’s looking to buy drugs, and will think up a reason to do a stop. Similarly, if they see young black men in hoodies rolling around Georgetown at 2 am, they’ll also pay close attention to them.

I wouldn’t call those things “profiling” … just paying attention to things that seem to be out of place. Good law enforcement.

You’re absolutely correct. Whenever I’ve had to deal with cops I’m always courteous, and treat the cop the way I’d like to be treated. I’m sorry, but if you’re face to face with an officer holding handcuffs in front of you, you really should not be surprised if he/she uses them. The rule is the officer always has the upper hand - if are aggressive, you get cuffed; if you pull a knife, you get shot, etc.

Someone that’s in a life or death job like that has to protect themself first, period. Sorry Professor Gates was arrested, but it’s a no brainer.

It was the bookkeepers at the company that blew the whistle on them. The crooks (gravediggers and local supervisors) weren’t very smart. Short of DNA testing all the bones they find, and trying to reassemble the skeletons, I don’t know if the aggrieved families will ever get closure. They probably won’t, period. A California company (Perpetua) runs the cemetery, and the president lives here in the Dallas area (in Richardson).

To pull from my own experience about being misheard over words that sound similar but have entirely different roots..
I once had a problem with a girl in junior high. She and I went for the same seat in the class. I got there first, and she whined. I said she was horrible, and that got misheard as me calling her something else entirely.

Ted’s harping on hospital re-admittances of Medicare patients (something like 18% of their patients are re-admitted within two weeks of discharge after a stay). He thinks that hospitals are ripping off the government, because elderly people have to go back again. He should do a little more research.

Today’s bull market? WTF is that - it’s an up market day. A bull market is a prolonged period in which investments rise at a rate higher than historical norms. If this run continues to 13-14K, over the next month or three, I’ll accept the definition of a bull market -but basically this is an up day and there are likely a number of reasons for it.

As for the duration, well, IMO, the negatives and prospective problems in the economy have not disappeared and the actions taken / planned by the Administration are doing nothing except delaying a lasting recovery.

Interesting question. I doubt conservatives are staying out of the market more than liberals. I think on some level they understand that their doomsday rhetoric doesn’t match reality. Just like guys like Glenn Beck says that we’re a fascist country with an oppressive government but he’s never going to leave the country. The believe this stuff on some levels but not others. It’s a balancing act.

On a Boston radio program this morning, Bill Cosby suggested that President Obama spoke too soon on the controversial arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates.

“I’ve heard about five different reports [on the details of the arrest],” Cosby said on Boston’s WZLX. “If I’m the president of the United States, I don’t care how much pressure people want to put on it about race, I’m keeping my mouth shut.”

“I was shocked to hear the president making this kind of statement,” Cosby said referring to the president’s remarks during last night’s press conference.

The comedian appeared to have dialed his comments back a bit in a later interview on Boston’s FOX 25 television station. Cosby cautioned those from coming up with their own conclusions, but gave the president some leeway.

“People who have not been there, people who don’t know are beginning to have their own personal feelings, but they weren’t there,” Cosby said.

“Does this include the president?” asked the FOX25 reporter.

“It includes everybody,” Cosby said. “[But] I would have to take into consideration that he lived in Cambridge for some time so he may know more than he’s saying about situations of that sort,” Cosby said.

Housing figures.

Now, why is there still serious problems with the economy?
Chrysler and GM are still unclear on the concept of selling cars to those who want them and making a profit on the transaction.
Unemployment figures.
Housing figures.
Consumer sentiment.
Credit woes continue.
Inflation concerns.
Energy prices.

Some parts of the country may be on the mend, but others have yet to fully feel the effects of the recession. Then, some parts of the country have barely seen any of the porkfest monies, while other areas that didn’t need it got it to excess. And that adds to the concerns about the long term health for the economy given that we’ve (and by we I mean our grandkids, etc.) got pay for all this at some point.

That is not true. He has a list of people to call on, but he does not know the questions in advance. The usual order has been to call on reporters from the wire services, then the networks and big newspapers, and then smaller outlets. Obama has varied that somewhat to incude reporters from other outlets.

I’ve been thinking that if my neighbors called the cops if I locked myself out of the house, I’d be thankful they were watching out for me, but my first reaction would be, “Why didn’t you recognize me?” I know my neighbors in varying degrees, some by name and enough to talk with, others by sight. Is a well known professor not known is his own neighborhood? Why? Does he need to get out more, or do the neighbors have bad eyesight?

What 40% rise in 6 months? 6 months ago the DJIA was 8228 - including the nearly 200 points from today, it’s up 880 points - 11%…and there are lots of reasons for a spike today as listed by Lawhawk. (Just for perspective - a year ago the DJIA was 11370 - which has the present at about a 20% decline).

Simple historical facts to consider:

During the Carter years, he was loved by the media and the investors viewpoint was generally negative. The investors were right.
During the Reagan years, he was hated by the media and the investors were very positive. The investors were right.
During the Bush 43 years, he was hated by the media and the investros were very positive. The investors were right.

Today, Obama is loved by the media and the investors are generally negative given the policies and actions he’s implemented and advcating - higher taxes, higher regulations, bigger government, etc. Do you think the investors are wrong this time? If so why?

As for the inference that Fox Business is anti-Obama perhaps that has less to do with ideology and more to do with the anti-business and fiscally irresponsible actions promoted by Obama and many of his party which directly contributed to the current economic conditions…and that the spin from CNBC has more to do with GE / NBC’s love affair with all things Obama…than with a real debate about the economic impacts of a quadrupling of the deficit (despite his lies about ‘inheriting’ one - like this WaPo chart.) and the other actions (like last night’s walk back from no tax increases for the middle class).

He rents the house from Harvard and apparently he travels a lot. I recognize most of my neighbors by sight but if they had their backs to me and were trying to force a door open, I’d be concerned enough to notify someone.

Where people are taking issue with him is that a lot of his commentary has some illusion built into it that just seems to be there to get a rise out of readers. That can be good I guess. We wouldn’t want it bland. Time will tell. Again I am not one to criticize because I am too chicken to put myself out there like that, though it would probably be good for me to follow the KT example. I would be a smarter person.

Karma here is biting KT in the butt. About a year ago he posted that things were changing at LGF and some of his friends would be leaving it. And he would miss them. My eyebrows raised up at that statement and I have always remembered it. It defines my reading of KT content. Maybe I am reading too much into it.

btw as far as I understand it (i didn’t follow this issue that closely) this guy got arrest after he identified himself as the home owner that does seem odd to me it logical for the police to investigate a suspected break in but once someone identifies himself shouldn’t the case be closed?

I don’t know enough about what the police did to judge whether they’re racist or not, but that’s not what really concerns me. I think Gates is playing the race card against the police. What concerns me is that someone who lives in this upscale Cambridge neighborhood of ivory-tower, self-congratulatory, morality-dictating, left-wing snobs actually called the cops on his own neighbor—a black man—trying to get into his own home.

To everyone in this messed up city who ever dared to tell me that Israel should be boycotted, that Bush/Cheney should be brought up on charges of war crimes, that that I can not make a right turn on red, all because these are the moral things to do: well guess what, assholes? You did this. Feeling all high and mighty now?

The AP story I just read is terribly misinformed. It’s so easy to verify the information, it seems like astonishing misdirection by AP’s Mr. Bablington.

He was never charged with resisting arrest. He was charged with DISORDERLY conduct, which the report and radio traffic recordings will certainly illustrate. The AP needs to get their facts straight, or is the writer such a narrow-minded, indoctrinated lefty that he salivates over another police-brutality-minority-smackdown “resisting arrest” controversy and his ideology does the writing? Listening to the interview of the good Seargant on Radio, he sounds like a very credible, upstanding and thoughtful police officer to about 90% of America. I’m sure he would have greatly preferred to not have to arrest this addled professor.

Where did the reporter get this account? It’s clear from the seargants interview and the police report that Gates followed the officer out and continued the haranguing. I’m just furious that the AP and it’s long arms get to re-write the narrative on this. Furious.

Don’t know about Cambridge but the cops I know (about 10 including family members) would have walked away after determining that it was his house and written a report documenting his outburst.
If he didn’t assault the officers and no neighbor wanted to sign a complaint, while they can arrest him, it was unlikely any DA would pursue charges, and they didn’t.
IMO Gates is a cockroach making a living off other peoples tribulations. But while my support is with Crowley and police in general, It looks like he took the bait and gave Gates what he wanted.

I disagree for two (at least) reasons:

First, I think it is a big deal when someone with the stature of the President of the United States effectively attempts to stoke enmity between the races. This is particularly true here when Obama consistently attempts to portray himself as “uniter” and a reasonable pragmatist who purportedly “like[s] to know what [he is] talking about before [he] speak[s]”. This situation gives a revealing look at Obama’s true colors, which are not very pretty.

Second, this officer and his family are the victims of a vicious slander. As someone else here posted, it will not come as a surprise to anyone if this officer’s life is turned upside-down by the media and the race-baiters in an effort to hunt for any dirt they can find on him. We have all seen how this ugly attack machine works. The more the true facts can be publicized, the better for him and all others who are the unfortunate victims of race-baiting leftists.

I will have to disagree with Crowley on one point, this is exactly what I would expect out of a Harvard prof.

Once the dust has settled expect this to be on the same horizon as the Duke Lacrosse case. Those accused will be proven innocent and the media will be silent about the correction.

As a former police officer (now a Emergency/Flight RN), I can tell you that police officers look at good guys vs bad guys…not the color of anyones skin. First, the officer was CALLED to the scene, and without hesitation performed his duty and at risk to himself, PROTECTED this “professor”s residence…it turned out that it was the owner, but the officer had no way of knowing that, it seems to me the so called professor is the racist, already on the defensive because a ‘white” officer was confronting him.

If the Professor had acted in appreciation to the fact that these officers had responded to SERVE HIS INTERESTS, and been willing to produce ID right away, then I am sure it would have been resolved with a handshake and a “thanks officer!”, but instead the professor wanted to play the race card because “the man” had dared question his elitist identity…

Once it was escalated and the officer made the call to address the disorderly conduct, he had to follow through, he couldn’t really back off, then he really would be facing liability. If he had enough to initiate the action he would not be able to justify why he made the call in the field to reverse his own arrest…this might not make sense unless you have been a police officer, but its the way of the world in law enforcement. I do not doubt that this officer, like countless others, would sacrifice his life to protect anyone, regardless of race, to include this POS professor.

As to the Messiah, Ive said it before, he made his comments, out of ignorance, and also because he is the SAME person he was when he was chillin with his pal Ayers and and his favorite Reverend…he didn’t like the country or “tha man” then, and I dint think he does now.

If the initiation of the disorderly begun before it was clear the professor was who he said he was, then the officers weren’t wrong for pursuing the charge. Just because an officer might stop me because I’m driving a car matching the description of a robbery suspect, and then its clear I am not the one, doesn’t give me license to act like an asshole and tell the officer to fuck off, especially in public.

I just guess I have a different perspective since I have actually been an officer and been through those types of calls. We’re used to putting our asses on the line for dip shits that don’t appreciate it, or even hate us, or, heaven forbid, tell us to fuck off.

Obama finally pays local parking tickets

“Before Barack Obama was a United States senator and a presidential hopeful, he was a Harvard University law student living in Somerville who parked in bus stops and accumulated hundreds of dollars in parking tickets. And for nearly two decades those parking tickets went unpaid, until a representative of Obama’s settled all his outstanding debts with Cambridge’s Traffic, Parking and Transportation Department Jan. 26.

Obama attended Harvard Law School from 1988 to 1991. During his time at Harvard, Obama lived at 365 Broadway in Somerville, according to his parking tickets. Records from the Cambridge Traffic, Parking and Transportation office show that between Oct. 5, 1988 and Jan. 12, 1990 Obama was cited for 17 traffic violations, sometimes committing two in the same day. The abuses included parking in a resident permit area, parking in a bus stop and failing to pay the meter. Twelve of Obama’s 17 tickets were given to him on Massachusetts Avenue.

In one eight day stretch in 1988, Obama was cited seven times for parking violations and was fined $45. Thirteen of the 17 violations occurred within one month in 1988.

Obama’s disobedience of the rules of the road earned him $140 in fines from the City of Cambridge. The tickets went unpaid for over 17 years and $260 in late fees were added to the tab. On Jan. 26, the fines and late fees were paid in full. The final tally for Obama’s parking breaches was $400, according to Cambridge Traffic, Parking and Transportation.

Obama spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki said the presidential candidate’s parking violations were not relevant.

“He didn’t owe that much and what he did owe, he paid,” Psaki said. “Many people have parking tickets and late fees. All the parking tickets and late fees were paid in full.”

Psaki declined to comment further. She refused to say how the fines went unpaid so long and what prompted Obama to finally pay them.

At Harvard, Obama became the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. After school, he spent eight years in the Illinois state senate before becoming a United States Senator in 2005. He is currently campaigning for the Democratic nomination for president.”

I had a neighbor who was a cop…I’m white, he was Hispanic. My (than) 8 year old daughter threw an egg at his 10 year old son who was harassing her. This stuff had been going on for awhile. They were standing in OUR driveway. The father came to my house (I wasn’t home), screamed at my daughter and her older sister who was babysitting…when I arrived home they were both hysterical. I went down and nicely tried to talk to the man and his wife. He was in the process of calling the police, or “his station” as he put it. Soon two squad cars showed up running red lights and siren.

All for my 8 year old.

Who had thrown an egg that grazed a shoulder.

Much to my amusement they came down to my house after talking to my neighbor for along time. I met them at the driveway and was charming and not a raving lunatic. They had to feel slightly foolish, but I wasn’t playing a game giving my side and what have you…I told them the hardened criminal was in her room, on bread and water for the rest of the day, thanks for coming. They were gone in under a minute.

My point is, cops can be assholes and race has nothing to do with it most the time. You have to have a certain amount of arrogance I suppose to be a cop. Sometimes it gets out of hand.

I know no one is reading and this is an anecdotal story, but I got the dreaded ‘Sir, you need to calm down’ admonition from a policeman who was investigating a burglary at my house and I threatened the perp. I calmed down, and the policeman recovered the stolen items and made a clean bust. Calm is good.

My dad and I had an interesting discussion about this incident. “Interesting” because he and I are polar opposites on the political spectrum.

I read it! And it goes a long with my story…if you act like a fool cops tend to stick around and make your life miserable. If you are nice and respectful they often times go away. It was very hard for me to be nice and respectful when I was fuming about all of it, but in the end they left and that is what was best for my daughter.
