Harry Reid: No Health Care Vote Until Fall

Politics • Views: 3,238

A big blow to Barack Obama’s attempt to rush the country into nationalized health care: Reid: No health care vote in Senate until fall.

WASHINGTON — The top Democrat in the Senate says lawmakers won’t vote until after August on health care, a blow to President Barack Obama’s ambitious timetable.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told reporters Thursday the Finance Committee will act on its portion of the bill before Congress’ monthlong break. Then Reid will merge that bill with separate legislation already passed by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

The Nevada Democrat says the decision to delay a vote was made Wednesday night in the hopes of getting a final bipartisan bill.

Nobody will mention tort reform both against the docs and the pharmaceutical industry. Class action law suits don't help anybody but lawyers. Most of the cases brought against doctors are frivolous. How about a system of loser pays? I know why congress never brings this up, but why doesn't the press bring it up?

After the blue dogs get lambasted when they go home on recess, there's no way in hell they're going to be in any kind of mood to throw their seats under Obama's bus.

Are we being publicly lied to? Yesterday Nancy Pelosi said they did have the votes they needed and they would be voting on this before the summer recess.

What's going on, I don't understand this. I had a lot more faith in our President, but this really has shaken my loyalty.

I could actually give the Democrats a lot of credit if it weren't for crazy stunts like this.

Crisis Going To Waste in 3... 2...

16 lawhawk  Thu, Jul 23, 2009 10:59:01am

Ah, a graceful way to avoid the ignominy of defeat - simply delay it until people are not paying attention.

The Democrats don't have the numbers to make it happen because their more conservative contingent isnt' going for it - and the numbers don't add up.

Health care is a massive and risky tax and spend scheme. There is no other way to characterize it because of the money involved, what the Administration hopes to do with this, and the demand that it be done immediately without serious scrutiny to insure that the numbers add up.

The CBO knows that this can't add up without massive taxes to make the numbers work and it wont save money in the long run. GOPers keep pointing this out. Even Democrats are realizing that this is a tax and spend scheme, and Obama's promise to avoid taxing 95% of Americans has fallen by the wayside.

The most important thing Obama said last night wasn't anything having to do with his friend, the Harvard professor, but that he green lighted the taxation of the middle class for health care so long as it wasn't where all the money for his proposals come from (he'd want more money to come from soaking the rich than from soaking the middle class).

But what we know is that if he tried to keep the tax hikes and surtaxes only on the rich, they could never make the numbers balance out; it had to fall onto the middle class. And even then, the numbers wont balance out.

Pelosi could have the votes in the House.
Reid thinks he doesn't have the votes in the Senate.

Both have major problems with basic math - namely that none of the Democrats' proposals for health care add up to saving money for all Americans over the long term. It's just another tax and spend proposal that will result in lower quality of care and restricted access to health care to create "savings".

This is a rhetorical question, right?

Last week, Pelosi released a statement on her website claiming the CBO report said her plan would be revenue neutral or save money. The actual report she linked to said pretty much the opposite. Today we hear Obama has called the director of the CBO to meet with him in the WH.

Obama, Pelosi, etc.. are gathering their forces for a full out onslaught in the next month. They've basically told the blue dogs and other democrats concerned with the price to shut up and get in line. I guess we'll see if they represent their constituents or if they're Obama's lapdogs.

Arm-twisting only goes so far with Democrats who basically represent red districts.

There's not much Pelosi and Obama can offer them that will offset the fact that they'll lose their seats in 2010 if they vote for this abomination.

See: Former Rep. Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky, D (PA), and Clinton's 1993 budget.

As someone mentioned earlier, the whole point of cramming this thing through before the recess was do it before members could go back to their district and get an earful. Remember Mel Carnahan in Missouri the other day? He was almost laughed off the stage when he started touting this bill. Harry and Nancy don't want the people to talk to their representatives.

Nothing at all precludes it - it's done all the time. As a matter of fact, one of the problems is that governors are SCREAMING that expanding medicaid as the legislation proposes would increase the unfunded mandate burden at the state level at a time of declining revenues.

As for Pelosi saying she had the votes - hubby was on the Hill ALL DAY yesterday and had dinner w/staff last nite. Apparently, she wasn't lying knowingly - she was lied TO by other members who are scared to death of her. Remember, when the Dems were in the minority, she was the whip - she knows how to count and she knows how to kneecap.

There won't be much opportunity to add things to the legislation - August recess is when a lot of these guys do the overseas junket thingy. Plus, when they start the face-to-face stuff in their districts, it's going to be like drinking from a fire hose - spewing piss.

It has occurred to me that stronger unity in messaging between the fed legislators and state execs could be very helpful - not only in unity of message, but also allowing for a wider range of options in who to choose to communicate different aspects of the message (e.g. budget, energy, etc.) based upon his/her strengths or admittedly his/her lack of weaknesses.

What I don't know is if there are other drivers that keep them from playing in that direction, because it's kind of common sense to me but I don't really see a lot of obvious shared messages getting out there. Maybe there's something I'm not aware of or haven't considered.

Having a substantive agenda would certainly help. But regarding the delay in the health care bill, they ought to take advantage of the time to publicize the hell out of it - analyze every page, and get the word out about the massive amounts of partisan cruft it has attached to it, along with the costs and loss of quality it will put in place if passed.

Also - keep an eye on the House. They are mulling staying over their recess to continue ramming their version of the bill through, at a time when lots of DC reporters will have scheduled vacations to coincide with the traditional break. It needs to be delayed in the House, too, to the extent possible, and the same treatment needs to be applied - a skeptical, public examination conducted in excrutiating detail.

The Dems are preventing the GOP from sending this chart of the proposed health care system to constituents claiming it isn't accurate.

Democrats Block GOP Health Care Mailing

Nice chart - what could the Donks possible be afraid of? Its going to backfire now that its been linked to Drudge it will get more coverage than if they had just let it go out in a mailing.

Web distribution is probably more effective, anyway. And frankly, speaking of franking, if the GOP feels that it is important to mail this out to constituents, then the GOP has it's own resources it can draw upon to pay for the mailing if their franking privileges are being toyed with.

I don't recall any past attempts to control franking by either party. Maybe I missed it, but it sets a bad precedent. It's just one more bad act that will inevitably invite payback in one form or another. Not to mention the free publicity they've handed the GOP by attempting this blockade. The Dems must have their heads up their asses thinking this was a smart move.

Jimmy Carter was known for trying to force a Congress run by his party to simply vote through his agenda, with little analysis or marketing of it to the representatives or (more importantly) to the American people. In the end, he has a legacy of stagflation and horridly failed arms limitation and peace treaties...and that sweater when it was getting colder.

Am I correct in understanding that there are two versions, one in the House, and the other in the Senate? And further, that the House version was portioned out to three committees, only two of which have voted on their portions (Energy and Commerce holding up their portion - cost issues I think)?

So, Pelosi thinks she has the votes to pass the House version, but members of her own party are saying she doesn't, and she doesn't even have the full proposed version back - and won't until Energy and Commerce finish.

And Reid in the Senate is saying he doesn't think there'll be a vote on their version before the recess?

And after the House and Senate pass their respective versions, don't the two versions have to go through the reconciliation process, prior to a final bill being sent to the President for signature?

It sure looks to me as though this may be losing steam, and after the pols get back from having their asses handed to them by their constituents, it may be even tougher.

I hope.

131 That's Mr. President to you  Thu, Jul 23, 2009 11:22:52am

Harry called me last night and explained his position.

You see, it will be very difficult for Harry to pack into this bill all of the vital additions that he and other Democrat Senators need. For example, real estate in Las Vegas is depressed these days and it is getting harder for Harry to make land deals by getting the laws changed. So he is looking into manipulating water rights off of the Colorado River. Well that is a little more complicated and needs to be worked out before it can be stuffed into "solving our latest emergency" (as Rahm like to put it).

So Harry and his fellow Democartic Senators will have extra time to engineer additional appropriations and slide them into the bill in conference committee after the summer recess.

Completely understandable.

Meanwhile, Rahm and I will try and figure out what our next national emergency needs to be - one that can carry our buddies through next winter. Maybe an asteroid defense system.

Part of a mass-email I just received. Can you guess who it's from?

My Friend,

Last week, I sent you an email asking for your voice on healthcare through Country First's Future of America's Healthcare Survey. I'm happy to tell you that over 30,000 people have filled out the survey online in less than a week. I'd like to share some of the early results:
90% of survey respondents believe America's healthcare system is the finest in the world, but still needs some reform.

80% of survey respondents believe the Federal Government should have no role at all in deciding an individual's healthcare.

91% of survey respondents do not believe the Federal Government should force all employers, no matter how small, to provide health benefits to all employees.

As you know, right now, President Obama, Democrats in Congress, powerful special interests and influential lobbyists are hard at work in Washington, D.C. trying to drastically change our current health care system. They seek to replace it with a nationalized system where the politicians and government officials will dictate the kind of medical services you and your family receive and the rules under which you access care and coverage.

Looks like Congress is going home for recess after all.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that the House can go home for its August recess without passing a massive overhaul.

Pelosi dismissed concerns expressed by many Democrats that a monthlong delay could give opponents more chances to rally opposition to the bill.

"I'm not afraid of August," Pelosi said. "It's a month."

That is different from what she said Wednesday and contradicts one of her fellow Democratic House leaders. On Wednesday, Pelosi had indicated that she supported staying into August, saying, "70 percent of the American people would want that."

As the bill has bogged down in the Energy and Commerce Committee, the July 31 deadline for passing the bill has seemed increasingly more difficult to meet. Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) have promised lawmakers two days to read the final bill, so it must get out of the committee by Wednesday.

The committee again delayed its markup Thursday. The committee hasn't met since Monday.

Hoyer has said he didn't see the need to keep lawmakers in session if Democrats haven't reached consensus.

But shortly before Pelosi's news conference, House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.), the No. 3 Democrat in the House, said the House should "postpone, if not cancel, our August recess" until the healthcare bill is passed.

"If we leave here without doing this, nobody is going to interpret that we're going home to listen," Clyburn said. "They'll say we're going on vacation without having done it."

Blue Dogs on the Energy and Commerce Committee have threatened to block the bill, saying it doesn’t do enough to cut healthcare costs and puts too heavy a burden on employers. And even if the Blue Dogs' concerns are assuaged, there are still looming problems with the tax on the wealthy to pay for it and objections by rural members who feel Medicare shortchanges their physicians and hospitals.

Pelosi reiterated Thursday her belief that she has enough votes to pass the bill. Democratic opponents of the current bill said it is nowhere close to having the votes to pass on the House floor. But she stood by her vote count Thursday.

"I'm more confident than ever," Pelosi said. "I stand by my statement."

re: #190 WinterCat

Obama's town hall now on Fox. He really is so full of crap. "it took us years to get into this mess..." (Don't blame me.)

What mess? Most of the so called "mess" is part of the private health industry, not the government, not government expenditures. The government already control payments through Medicaid and Medicare, so, what part of this is HIS problem.

In plain simple language, Obama should be saying that he doesn't like the way the private health care business is run and he want's to nationalize it.

Because that's the truth.

Now, if the government wants to look at the over all cost of health care and make suggestions, maybe even some laws that would help prevent the health care industry from actually ripping their "customers" off, then that may fly, on both side of the aisle.

But otherwise, Obama, stay out of private business.

This is where bloggers could step up to fill the gap. Sunlight doesn't have to come from DC reporters.

THE FACTS: Obama did so in his opening statement, saying, "I've heard that one Republican strategist told his party that even though they may want to compromise, it's better politics to 'go for the kill.' Another Republican senator said that defeating health reform is about 'breaking' me."

[Link: news.yahoo.com...]

I guess they'll claim the AP is a right-wing organization now.

Because we all know if they were actually listening, then they wouldn't be trying to pass this shit in the first place

Obama's style of speaking, teleprompters aside, has changed. He has developed a "yelling" style. Speaks louder and when making a point he bobs his head to add additional emphasis to his point. Reminds me of a past foreign leader, whose name shall not be uttered.

Islam, Christianity and Juadism all have a biases or proscriptions against images, i.e. statutes. Those religions and societies will have a bias against giant images. The Catholic church embraced image moreso than most other branches, and you have the Rio statue of Christ from that influence

Western political cultural avoids the cult of personality unlike communism. Most western statues tend to war heroes (I have not counted) and are scaled for the environment they are placed in.

I was always taught that if one ever has to assert their authority, i.e., "I'm the parent!", or "I'm the boss!" or "I'm in charge here!" then that person has clearly lost their authority. Parents don't have to remind their children who the parents are. Bosses or managers don't have to remind the employees who's in charge. And certainly the POTUS doesn't need to remind the beleaguered, over-taxed American people who got elected. We know.

And certainly the POTUS doesn't need to remind the beleaguered, over-taxed American people who got elected. We know.

Just blamed the Republicans. Didn't he preface this with I'm not blaming the Republicans. This is basically the same speech as last night but he's got an audience and they are on his side so he appears to be having alot of fun at half of America. Maybe that's what this is: I've never had a President before, that in his speeches insults anyone who does not agree with him. Every damn time I listen to him speak on issues I end up feeling angry and insulted over his personal critisism of conservatives and anyone else who doesn't agree.

That's what I absolutely loved about the speech last night and today. Last weekend, he says if the Republicans want to give him the economy and all its problems, his reply was "Give it to me." Now? Well, I "inherited" this horrible economy and the Republicans are responsible for every frak-up since.

Not since Lurch have I seen the sort of buck-passing that this man engages in every other hour.

Suspected Muslim Honour Killings In Canada

Kingston Police have arrested at least three people in connection with the mysterious deaths of four Montreal women found in a submerged car in Kingston Mills on June 30.

Police sources confirmed the dramatic development in the case yesterday, 22 days after a black Nissan Sentra was found in roughly three metres of water near one of the four locks.

Three teenage sisters were found dead in the car, Zainab Shafi, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, along with a 50-year-old woman, Rona Amir Mohammed.

La Presse newspaper in Montreal said three people who were heading to Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport were arrested yesterday morning.

The newspaper obtained a copy of the e-mail from Masoomi, who lives in Niort, France. She claims she is the sister of Rona Amir Mohammed and she also offered the stunning allegation that the dead woman was the first wife of Mohammed Shafi, the father of the three dead girls.

She provided photos that she claims show Shafi and Mohammed at their wedding in Afghanistan 30 years ago. The couple never divorced.

Masoomi said the marriage has been hidden since the family moved to Canada two years ago.

In interviews after the deaths, Shafi and the woman he presented as his only wife, Tooba Mohammed Yhaya, said Rona Mohammed was a cousin.

We recently moved across the country and my husband has given up on the VA here, he's been attempting to register with them for weeks and finally said screw it, it's not worth it.

At first they gave him a stack of forms wanting to know things such as how much he earns and what we spend during the month. He is 60 percent disabled and retired from the military, so why in the hell do they need to know all these details??? Every time he goes back he is told something different. Basically they just wore him down until he gave up, so they're pretty good. Crap like this is what is in store for everyone if we get nationalized health care.

This is becoming sort of comical...
Why the economy continues to stall

by Ed Morrissey

The difference between Obama’s personal ratings and his economic ratings are significant in both domestic and international respondents. International investors overwhelmingly like Obama, but his ratings on economic policies drop perhaps more than 30 points abroad, and get cut in half at home. Unfortunately for Obama, foreign investors aren’t flooding cash into the American economy either, thanks to both the strains in their own economies as well as concerns over debt strategies.

Meanwhile, in the real world...
Dow at 8-month high

Market's fear gauge still points to gains for stocks

The VIX, otherwise known as the market's fear gauge, is firmly back under 30, suggesting that investors are confident the worst is over. But it remains above the 20 mark -- a sign that investors are not overly exhuberant.

Heh. Just a tip to conservative bloggers: Wait for a bad day with the economy to post the doom and gloom stuff.

re: #231 Pianobuff

In what way are they hard to get?

Expensive, and many companies just plain pulled out, little completion. Pre-screening is rigorous, may policies have a long wait to take effect. That way they are still within the letter of the law.

What happened when the pre-existing conditions clause was removed. Was people wouldn't carry insurance, they'd then get diagnosed with something. They run out and buy a policy, and the law required they could buy it and the company would have to cover the illness at existing rates.

As soon as the illness was treated the person would drop the insurance.

Insurance companies didn't want to play that game, and I don't blame them.

That's the thing. Most of the reason he engages in the "pass the buck" exercise is because it plays well with the Dem base and they honestly believe it plays well with moderates. Namely that blaming the other guy silences questions of what exactly did they do to stop all this from happening. It seemed to work for them during the election, so they think they can keep it going. What they don't get is that people want answers, not excuses, and that this "Republicans are bad, m'kay" routine is wearing thin.

Cool! I want the Girlfriend Fiancee to get her carry permit. A .357 would be fine for her, as she could still shoot .38s in it. What I really want isa a Smith and Wesson 642 or the like (I'll go for the hammerless over the ability to shoot magnum rounds). She won't be able to handle the heavy magnum loads, but a +P would be doable. She doesn't need to have to worry about single or double action, and she doesn't want to learn a manual of arms the way she'd need to with an automatic.

It isn't the best (I'd rather load her up with a Kahr in 9mm, and a couple of extra magazines), but it is what she is willing to do.

First, congratulations!! Hmm...the little 642 does look sweet. Sounds like she's kind of like my wife. The Ladysmith appeals to her for the very reason she can fire .38s through it. She's very good with both my Glock 9mm (the 19 and 26), but really does prefer the revolvers. Go figure.

Watery Graves

Mark Steyn comments on the statistically improbable number of deaths by drowning of young Muslim women in Ontario

Three or so weeks back, a submerged car was found in the Rideau Canal in Kingston, Ont., containing the bodies of three teenage girls and their aunt — a story initially reported as Mysterious Death Of 4 Quebecers Baffles Kingston Police. When it emerged that the four female Quebecers were, in fact, Muslim, the tearful parents offered up a strange tale of an impromptu midnight driving lesson gone tragically wrong (Driving Lesson May Have Led To Drowning).

La Presse is now reporting that the girls' father, mother, and brother have been arrested en route to Montreal Airport, and that the deceased "aunt" or (alternatively) "cousin" was, in fact, the girls' father's first wife. The words "crime d'honneur" are beginning to creep into newspaper accounts.

Meanwhile, the blogger Scaramouche suggests that, while they're looking into honor killings in the Kingston area, the constabulary might take a gander at another curious aquatic accident this month...

OT:
This is particularly rich. Apparently the police officer in the dustup with the Harvard Prof is a police academy lecturer on profiling.

The white police sergeant criticized by President Barack Obama for arresting black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. in his Massachusetts home is a police academy expert on racial profiling.

Cambridge Sgt. James Crowley has taught a class on racial profiling for five years at the Lowell Police Academy after being hand-picked for the job by former police Commissioner Ronny Watson, who is black, said Academy Director Thomas Fleming.

"I have nothing but the highest respect for him as a police officer. He is very professional and he is a good role model for the young recruits in the police academy," Fleming told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The course, called "Racial Profiling," teaches about different cultures that officers could encounter in their community "and how you don't want to single people out because of their ethnic background or the culture they come from," Fleming said.

Obama has said the Cambridge officers "acted stupidly" in arresting Gates last week when they responded to his house after a woman reported a suspected break-in.

The US did have to ban pre-existing condition exclusion when changing insurance, though, or people wouldn't change jobs - they could lose coverage.
Something similar could be done, where you can change companies and have pre-existing conditions covered, but not if you didn't have coverage before.

In California, companies will retroactively cancel insurance if they think a condition could have existed before you got the insurance, even if you didn't know.

Universal Health Insurance in Washington State: (Published in 2000)
A Grim Prognosis For All of Us

(Published in 2000)

Late last year, in another assault on the truth, President Clinton claimed the rising number of uninsured is due to Congress' failure in 1993 to pass his plan for nationalizing health care.(1) Contrary to his predictable spin, the growing national population of uninsured citizens is a cancer clearly identifiable at the state level with Washington State becoming a textbook case for legislators and single-payer advocates. Make no mistake about this: it is not because state legislators failed to implement universal health care, but precisely because they did!

[snip]

As for health care policy, it's becoming apparent liberals and some conservatives don't much care if mandates and government regulations raise the price of health insurance and therefore increase the number of uninsured Americans. Since the more uninsured Americans there are, the stronger the popular support and hence the political support for a nationalized, single-payer health care system.

What seems so disingenuous is that while both Clintons like to brag about how many components from their health plan have been incrementally legislated nationally, they are in denial over how government health care is being force-fed to all Americans on a scale no less than that force-fed to the citizens of Washington State. The consequences are becoming the same: the nation is now running an uninsured rate of about 17 percent.

The market for health insurance in the state of Washington is collapsing because of determined shortsightedness. In 1993, before radical insurance reform, 19 insurers sold individual insurance, Today, only three do. Between 1994 and 1997, the six largest insurance companies lost more than $116 million on individual policies. The loss trend continues today for the remaining insurers.

As premium inflation permeates the population, consumers find it sensible to maintain insurance only so long as it is needed, creating a death spiral created by politicians addicted to repeating what we know to be bad social policy. It seems appropriate to suggest that when it comes to health care issues, one of the best health care reform laws needed by Americans is one that protects us from some of our elected representatives and their appointed bureaucrats.

Getting involved in the health care social policy debate is a lot of trouble, is expensive, is time consuming, and is guaranteed to offend someone. But, the alternative is worse.

Portability can actuarially be predicted, it was individuals abusing the a complete ban on pre-existing conditions that killed it.

They want the Blue Dogs in line. Apparently BHO thinks that they are ruining his presidency.

I was thinking about this during lunch.
They have started some very nasty ads here about Baucus being in the pocket of the insurance companies but it was Baucus who fought for the SChip policies during the Bush years. I mentioned to my boss that I haven't seen this much nastiness in MT politics since they were trying to get rid of Conrad Burns. Found out that the money behind the Burns ads was Acorn $$. I know that Move On had money on it but did not know about the Acorn dollars (there just aren't that many people here to benefit acorn)

I have a feeling that the new bloods (Chicago crowd) are trying to pull the rug out from under the heirarchy of Dems in DC. Get rid of the blue dogs, get rid of the ones who, although liberal are more centrist (Baucus) and know that they have to please the people who vote for them. They already pulled Joe Lieberman's carpet out with Lamont Cranston (Lieberman won but he had to go 'independent' to do it.)

WHY are they tearing down their house and what do they hope to purchase in the end. This is a long hard fight. I think we are just beginning to see the skirmishes. Baucus will have a target on his back. Have a feeling I know who the new bloods will try to put up in his place - but I'll wait and see.

Sorta health related:

Dozens Arrested in New Jersey Corruption Probe

Levy Izhak Rosenbaum of Brooklyn was charged separately with conspiring to broker the sale of a human kidney for a transplant, at a cost of $160,000 to the transplant recipient. According to the FBI's complaint, Mr. Rosenbaum said he had been brokering the sale of kidneys for 10 years.

My question is, how do you go about doing that without the aid of a doctor, and probably a hospital. I figured that when a kidney comes out of someone, the doctor has already done the type-matching.

Or would it have been cadaver kidneys?

It's open to the public free of charge every day except Fed holidays. It's a great collection that's worth the trip (about an hour+ from Philly), but the presentation leaves something to be desired. All of the armored vehicles are displayed outdoors, exposed to the elements & some are in rather rough condition. I even saw baby birds nesting in the sprocket wheel of a Panzer III! About half of the outdoor displays are unmarked, so even someone with a fair amount of knowledge on the subject like myself will be left wondering "What the hell is that?" There were no docents or tour guides at all when I visited. Most of the collection will be moved to Ft. Lee in 2011, hopefully it'll be better cared for there.

This is particularly rich. Apparently the police officer in the dustup with the Harvard Prof is a police academy lecturer on profiling.

Black students and professors at Harvard have complained for years about racial profiling by Cambridge and campus police. Harvard commissioned an independent committee last year to examine the university's race relations after campus police confronted a young black man who was using tools to remove a bike lock. The man worked at Harvard and owned the bike.

Sounds like Seattle, in any interaction between cops and blacks that becomes newsworthy cops are painted as the bad guys. They're have been several high profile shootings in the last few decades (included one falsely reported by Mary Mapes of Rathergate), and I can't remember one where the inquest jury didn't find it justified.

I look at situations like Cambridge and think to myself, there are certain community leaders who have a vested interest in fomenting just this type of conflict.

Parents, brother charged in 4 canal deaths

A Montreal couple and their son have been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to murder in the deaths of three sisters and an older female, police said Thursday in Kingston, Ont.

Zainab Shafia, 19, Sahar Shafia, 17, and Geeti Shafia, 13, were found with another woman, Rona Amir Mohammed, 50, in a car submerged in water at a Rideau Canal lock near Kingston last month.

Speaking during a news conference at Kingston Police headquarters, Insp. Brian Begbie said Mohammad Shafia, Tooba Yehya Mohammad and Hamid Mohammad Shafia have each been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and four counts of conspiracy to murder. They are being held while waiting for bail hearings.

The submerged black Nissan Sentra was discovered on June 30, the same day Mohammad Shafia went to the Kingston Police station to report his missing daughters, a woman he said was his 52-year-old cousin and his vehicle. He was accompanied by his wife and 18-year-old son, said police.

CBC is now reporting the story, and if you want to see the especially self-abasing species of moonbat that inhabits my country, then go and read the comments. Spit.

re: #527 jantjepietje

overhead costs etc are very very high?
although you spent a very large(i think the highest in the world) percentage of your gdp you only get health for a limited percentage of your population and you only get a limited amount of coverage for the people that do have health insurance

Gee, I wonder why so many people are flocking to the U.S. for health care?

Canadians have a problem getting prenatal care to the extent that they come here for it. Many come here for advanced surgeries. California is drowning in unpaid health care costs because people without coverage in other countries go there for care. In 2004, the last year for which numbers are available, 16% of our GDP went to health care.

Costs are contained everywhere through one mechanism or another. In all cases, part of that containment involves limiting of care. Economically, when there is unlimited demand and limited supply, prices will do nothing but rise whether the government, insurance companies, or individuals pay for it.

I'll put the quality and general availability of health care in this country up against that of any country in the world and find it, at worst, comparable.

My husband was in taks when he was in the Army (Big Red One). When we were dating, he took me out to Aberdeen so I could see tanks. They were sitting on cement slabs outside with plaques on the slabs naming the tanks. (The Russian tanks from WW II were tres kewl.)

Anyhoo, there was one cement slab that was completely empty. The plaque said

STEALTH TANK

heh

Did Prince Albert tell you about that?

Panhandler. I don't think that the Royals have fallen to panhandling, though my knowledge of royalty is sketchy, at best.

I have no dog in this fight. I have all the free health care I want, I make a lot of money ripping off dumb people who don't realize their antique soap box racing car is worth a fortune in Cuba and I pick up extra cash as an expert bingo player.

But, I still want to support my President.

I stepped out for a moment and missed this gem. That deserves a upding from the Bingo playing, soap box derby seller, whoever he is. :)

No... it's something like the "National Firearms Museum", or some equally bland name. I'll have to look for it.

The National Firearms Museum is located at the NRA headquarters building in suburban VA.
