I caught it at the end when I think he was talking about talking to Crowly and the press camping on the cop’s lawn. FCCBHO said something about “my lawn is bigger than your lawn”. Gibbs is on now.

Crowley suggested having a beer at the White House with all three: Obama, Crowley, and Gates.

Just remember that the police can’t be trusted really. After all they backed McCain.

Earlier in the day, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs dismissed a suggestion that the backlash from police groups could be distressing to the White House, given that Obama has enjoyed a positive relationship with the law enforcement community.

“I think the Fraternal Order of Police endorsed McCain,” Gibbs fired back, referring to Obama’s Republican opponent in the 2008 election. “If I’m not mistaken.”

When a reporter pointed out that Obama had won the support of the Policemen’s Benevolent Association, Gibbs conceded: “We got some.”

Today’s lesson: If you’re not with Obama, you’re against him.

Palin’s standing slips in Post-ABC News poll

A majority of Americans take a negative view of outgoing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and although she remains popular among Republicans, her image within the party has slipped, according to a new poll.

Palin’s favorabilty rating has dipped to its lowest level in the Washington Post-ABC News since she came to national attention last summer as GOP presidential nominee John McCain’s running mate. Fifty-three percent of those polled view her negatively and 40 percent have a favorable impression.

Guilt doesn’t slide around. It sticks to the person it belongs to. It takes no pain, no guts, to apologize for what you didn’t do, and you get a nice warm feeling from being a “good person.”

Obama’s remarks only highlighted a singular truth- that the only one who behaved stupidly was the President himself. His words today would have far more weight had he not poisoned the waters in matters in which he admitted he having incomplete knowledge.

I can only hope he doesn’t respond to a foreign policy crisis in the same way he responded to the matter in Cambridge.

I still think that was part of the reason he screwed up on the Iran issue earlier this summer.

Arresting Officer To Speak Out About Gates Incident

The department may release Crowley’s radio transmission, which the commissioner said is key to the case and support the sergeant’s decision.

I’ve heard one report that Sgt. Crowley as the incident spun up, and Gates started yelling racism, Crowley switched to continuous transmission so much of the incident was recorded.

*Obama’s back pedal may be related, word came up from the PD, and the recording doesn’t support Gates.*

As a Philadelphia police detective, Obama’s comment angered and insulted me. If you do not know the facts of the case and you were not there, you should keep your opinions to yourself. Especially when the one arrested is a close, personal friend!

It’s bad enough a lot of the public hates us, but when the POTUS starts piling on, it becomes ridiculous.

It would appear that Gates was afforded every courtesy due an arrestee at the time. Actually, he received more courtesy than was warranted here. The sergeant cuffed Gates in front, so as to not exacerbate his injury! And what does he get for it? Scorn and hatred from CNN, MSNBC, the Sharptons of the world, and Barack Obama!

Sorry for the rant, but this case really grinds my gears.

I may be able to understand Gibbs and what happened to him. There has been quite a number of home robberies in my area around the Secret Mountain Lair. And every one of those robberies was pulled off by a midget.

Now, some of you may not know this, but I am a midget. Yea, I know, if you look at my avatar, I look like an average sized male, but really, it’s a clever perspective shot, and I am holding the parrot further out in front of me than it appears to be.

Well, when I came home last night, I dropped my keys in the high grass that’s around my front porch (well, if you are a midget, it’s appear high to me), and I was fumbling for my keys, when a sheriff’s department SUV (yes they use SUV’s up here in the hills) drove up and started to question me.

He reminded me of the recent midget robberies and started questioning me about where I have been spending the last few days? I told him that Cirque De Soleil was coming to town next week, and I was applying for some temporary work tightening screws underneath the seats (my height makes that easy work).

The next thing you know, he’s slamming me up against the garbage can (it was taller than me), and telling me to stop fucking with him. I guess he doesn’t know anything about the employment opportunities for midgets.

I told him I was sure that the local robberies was due to a clever raccoon, not a midget, since all the midgets I know in the neighborhood have been attend the “very special people” convention in San Diego this week.

He was going to arrest me, but the cuffs kept slipping off and he didn’t have any of those plastic things.

I finally convinced him that I was not the midget he was looking for and he left. But it does show you that being a minority is a SMALL part of the problem.

I wonder if Obama’s newest back-pedaling was an attempt to preempt the release of the real-time recordings of the event.
By most accounts, the policeman had his mic button depressed while Gates was getting himself arrested, which would mean that the facts from that day would be available to the public were the tapes released.

Barack Obama is holding a press conference on his outrageous characterization of the Cambridge police as “stupid.” Here’s a thread to discuss, as he actually claims that this should be a “teachable moment.”

It’s a “teachable moment” alright. I certainly just learned something. I learned that Barack Obama is obsessed over racial politics and that all his bombast about being a post-racial president was nothing more than a load of horse manure.

Man tries to break into house —> Cop needs to investigate.

Man refuses to identify himself and instead hurls abuse — > Cop needs to arrest.

Period. All the rest is hogwash. This has nothing to do with race outside the minds of Gates and Obama.

I’d be interested to see the internals on that one. Several of the major pollsters oversample Democrats by a wide margin. It could be even worse for him than it looks.

Among those not affiliated with either major party, 37% offer a positive assessment.

You expect 80% of Dems to love him and 80% of Republicans to hate him. When you’ve got that low an approval rating from independents, you are toast.

But it did. And it is being kept in the limelight by the bumbling of this administration. And it’s instructive…teachable, even.

It’s a brilliant distraction. While we’re watching the birdie:

House Democrats clearing one health care obstacle

Key House Democrats agreed Friday on steps designed to cut the growth of Medicare, clearing one of numerous obstacles blocking an early vote on health care legislation.

But even as Speaker Nancy Pelosi hailed the agreement as a “giant step forward” on President Barack Obama’s top domestic legislation, leaders struggled without success to ease the concerns of moderate to conservative Democrats who have held up progress on the bill for a week. With the talks at a deadlock, a key committee chairman suggested an end run around the rebels.

At the White House, Obama met with senators in an attempt to speed completion of a bipartisan deal that has been under discussion for weeks laughed his butt off at the ease with which he could distract the right.

In another part of the Capitol on Friday, Rep. Mike Ross, D-Ark., said attempts by so-called Blue Dogs to win changes had ended in stalemate.

“It pretty much fell apart this afternoon,” he said.

The group has enough votes on the Energy and Commerce Committee to prevent the bill’s passage there, and the chairman, Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., raised the possibility of simply bypassing the panel and taking the legislation directly to the floor.

“We’re going to have to look at perhaps bypassing the committee because we’ve got to get moving on this legislation,” he said. “I hope we don’t come to that conclusion.”

For some reason, it really upsets me that Obama has commented on this particular case like this.

I understand that racism certainly still exists, (even though in this case, the mayor, the governor, the president and the professor himself might demonstrate that we have come a long way), but I really don’t think this is a case of profiling at all.

It now appears that Gates knew someone had messed up his doors and in fact the question he refused to answer was “Is there anybody in the home with you?” before he exploded at the officer (in front of a black and latino police offer no less.)

I am starting to guess that Gates was trying to hide something through his over the top performance. Should it ever come out, I hope the press reports it.

Obama really picked the wrong case to educate the rest of us on the evils of racism on.

Thanks. I’m not perfect, and I have made my share of mistakes in 15 years, but when something like this gets out, the media tries to lump every police officer into one racist little group. I think that’s despicable.

In 15 years, I have had an African-American partner, A female partner, and two Latino partners. I would have surely laid down my life for any one of them, and they have been in my home for dinner dozens of times.

The thing to remember is that there are idiots and morons of every color and every profession. I believe that Gates expected the officers to kiss his rear end, and when they did their job in investigating the radio call, he became outraged. Petty, if you ask me.

I suspect that at the point that Gates was arrested, the officers would have made sure that no one else was hovering around to cause them trouble. The police didn’t just rush off with him. They have to secure the scene and make sure they have their ass covered.

There was nothing else to find or else they would have found it, before they left. There is no need to make more of this then what it is. That’s like Obama making it out to be something it’s not.

Obama didn’t have all the facts, you don’t either.

Apologizing for what you didn’t do is wrong.

Apologizing for what you did do is right.

Sympathizing with people who were treated wrongly is fine, identifying that wrong happened is the right thing to do, but the apology belongs to the perpetrators. Guilt sticks to the person it belongs to.

Just as I predicted on the last thread. A non-apology that was then turned into a lecture aimed at those who disagree with him and an attempt to shift the blame for this insult onto his critics. “Those who disagree with me need to be re-educated” is the take-away message.

Badly played. A simple acknowledgment that he let his mouth get ahead of his brain, that he shouldn’t have condemned anyone based on the limited knowledge he had, would have glossed the whole matter over, and it would have sunk into obscurity. Instead, he’s upped the ante and decided to make an issue of the indefensible.

Oh, well. At least it keeps people from focusing on his attempt to nationalize health care.

Also, this has more to do with privilege than race. Gates apparently yelled “You have no idea who you’re dealing with!”, which is exactly the kind of thing a privileged member of the elite yells at a lowly beat cop who makes the mistake of not kowtowing to the person in authority.

If you look closely at the report, you’ll also note that when Gates did finally show an ID to Crowley, it wasn’t his drivers license. It was his Harvard faculty ID.

There’s no reason anyone would do that, other than to emphasize the “you don’t know who you’re messing with” aspect of the whole thing.

Hi Sharm! From your link:

Under the agreement, the Institute of Medicine would complete a study by September 2011 recommending changes in the current fee structure.

And,

Separately, lawmakers agreed to call for a second study by the Institute of Medicine to investigate regional differences in payments to Medicare providers, to be implemented in 2014.

Officials said the two steps combined were designed to control the steady increase in Medicare costs, although they provided no immediate estimates of anticipated savings.

Two words for these Democrats: Baby and Boomers. The pig is in the python. The only “changes to the current fee structure” that could address this would be to limit services and/or reduce fees.

And this on top of Obama’s claim that his new health care plan would be paid for by increasing taxes on the “rich” and cutting costs in Medicare and Medicaid.

This is quickly becoming a sick, sick joke. A terribly unfunny one.

“There is a class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public.

Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs-partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays.

Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.”

I think they’re talking about the ‘sustainable growth rate’ SRG. Promising to modify it was how they got the AMA’s endorsement.

Over the past few weeks, according to sources, House committee staff have been involved in serious negotiations with representatives of various physician groups, attempting to win their overt support not just for reform but for a public plan option specifically. As an enticement, they’ve been promising to fix permanently the SGR problem—that is, the annually scheduled adjustment to the “sustainable growth rate” in Medicare, which threaten increasingly large cuts in physician payments before Congress inevitably postpones changes for a year. Reformers, including President Obama, have already talked about doing this; apparently, the offer the House Dems are making is to follow through on this and to make it a good, solid fix.

Well yes there is reason. He’s staying in Harvard Faculty housing. It’s his home, but he doesn’t own the house.

You’re saying Bush had some things to apologize for, but he didn’t, is that right? Can you cite those examples of one or two of those things? I can’t think of any. Not that he did anything wrong in his presidency, they just weren’t the kinds of things people apologize for. You know, like calling others stupid when you don’t even know the facts regarding the situation.

Can you give some examples? Links would be great, but even just naming them would help.

kynna: Here’s my point. I’m certainly not an Obama defender; my pet peeve is double standards. IMO, every president did and does many things that require apologies. It just seems strange to me that President Bush is the only president in my lifetime who never apologized for anything, or acknowledged he had made any mistakes. And he was highly praised for this, on blogs, because to acknowledge any imperfection would just be “giving the libs ammunition.”

I’m just saying, what would be the response now if President Obama went four years, or eight years, without acknowledging any mistakes. What would he be called? I don’t think he’d be praised for not giving the wingnuts any ammuntion, do you? Double standard.

And what do you think is an example of a mistake that “isn’t the kind of thing you apologize for”?

I’m just saying, what would be the response now if President Obama went four years, or eight years, without acknowledging any mistakes. What would he be called? I don’t think he’d be praised for not giving the wingnuts any ammuntion, do you? Double standard.

And what do you think is an example of a mistake that “isn’t the kind of thing you apologize for”?

Signing campaign finance reform. He could have apologized for that, I suppose, but most presidents to apologize for signing legislation.

The first stimulus of the meltdown. He could have apologized for that, but I think he really meant for it to help.

Those are things I didn’t like in his administration but, because of the nature of the issue — particularly policy and legislation — it isn’t the kind of thing a president apologizes for.

To my knowledge he never said anything like what Obama said. That kind of snotty remark needs an apology.

And you’re still not citing anything specific. What mistakes did all these other presidents admit to while they were in office?

Well, the obvious example is the subject of this thread, right? I assumed that’s what we were talking about.

On that score, I do agree with you. This is an imperfect apology.

I just don’t think a US President should apologize for something which was done before he (and everyone else living) was born, and/or something for which only some Americans believe was wrong to do in the first place, and which fall along controversial party lines.

He can give his opinion it was wrong all day, but you can only apologize for your own garbage.

(pardon my tardiness, class, the wife just dropped by, so here’s my post from the last thread)

Yep, right on cue - Gates goes under the bus, like so many before him!

BHO did the right thing here, really the only thing he could do, given that the MA police union “dug in their heals really hard this morning at their press conference, and immediately received growing national support from police officers everywhere and with it, shifting public opinion to their side, at Obama’s expense. Old honest Abe said it all when he said that in America, public opinion is everything - and BHO understands this well.

This is damage control on the fly, and BHO shows good judgment to respond quickly to an event that was only overwhelming the WH and POTUS.

But don’t expect the grievance hustlers to go quietly, quite the contrary, get ready for the hand wringing and howling to break out in ever larger volume - as “victims”, hell bent for attention and perhaps even revenge now that BHO is POTUS, that are so deluded with self-righteous conviction that their their vision is currently blind to the proper resolution to what is for Barack, a major distraction, as his poll numbers slide, and with them, his ability to sign into law the policies that he has promised to so many.

I doubt that many in this minority group will comprehend BHO’s current dilemma and understand his actions, and why he had little choice to do otherwise.

Who wins here? Well, Barak, Sgt. Crowley, and most of the public who are more concerned about our economic house being on fire just now. Who tanks? Gates, Soladide(sp?) O’Brien, and race hustlers on both sides of the issue.

I knew that this would be a fun episode to witness! But will Sgt. Crowley get to have BHO’s proffered beer at the WH, where he can explain to Obama and all that he was criminally profiling Gates - not racially profiling him, and ask Barack to “splain” it to the noted Harvard scholar on racism?

(continuing…)

A bright light in this day of dark politics. Maybe true reform can happen if we take the time to research why costs are so high and what the successful Med centers are doing (Mayo, Cleveland). Then perhaps they can put together a plan blueprint for the States to administer, leaving the Fed out of it. Success would not be claimed by either side and that will never fly. This is about the politicians because it certainly isn’t about the American public. Everyone I talk to, from right and left, are completely disgusted with Congress and Obama and their rush to get this done without due-diligence.

Well, whites are also sensitive to being called “racist” over every little thing that inconveniences anybody who is not white. I did not vote for you. It was not because I am racist. It was because I thought you would be an inferior president pursuing what I perceive as unwise policies and agenda. It was and is my legitimate right to have such an opinion. You are now whining and tsk’ing over the “controversy” about the Gates arrest. You are incorrect on what is the basis of the controversy. It’s not the arrest — that would have worked itself out as all such local police matters do. It was the fact that YOU wrongly inserted yourself into a local police matter, that YOU made a prejudiced judgment all the while acknowledging that you did not know the facts, that YOU used your “teachable moment” to teach the American people that despite campaign promises you are not the “post-racial” rainbow leader many hoped you were. I hope YOU have learned something from this incident. I am confident that the American voters have.

Did you see what Elcid just posted in the spinoffs -

Just rec’d email from ‘redstate’

BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: A RedState source sat behind a top aide to Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY) and heard the aide admit that “the increase in Hospice care which will solve the prolonging of life issue.” As you know, Democrats have been open about their desire to push seniors toward euthanasia as a cost savings option. In fact, the Democrats already have in the legislation a provision requiring senior citizens to receive instructions every five years on dying with dignity.
Full story on the latest revelations below:
[ ]
The two were talking about whether Tonko would even be given time to read the bill. She told the lobbyist, “well he pays me to read it for him”.
“[The] costliest part [of the Obama healthcare bill] will be the physician’s rate cut,” she said. Lots of political capital is going to be spent to get that through.
And, for the crowning glory, the aide feels that “probably the best part of the bill is the increase in Hospice care which will solve the prolonging of life issue.”
This seems to prove the argument that the Obama bureaucrats will eventually decide who lives and who dies.

That is not the same thing. And, if you know the facts it was not ‘selling ports’. It was licensing management, IIRC. Look it up. It’s also a policy/legislation type of issue, and was/is perfectly legal. Whether I agree with the decision or not, it wasn’t illegal and wasn’t an insult and was not what it was made out to be. No apology warranted.

I completely agree that this ought to be a teaching moment — specifically, Herr Doktor Doktor Professor Gates should somehow be taught to stop acting like a fucking drama queen with a chip on his shoulder. Furthermore, he needs to be taught that it is psychologically impossible to “humiliate” a man who has the correct balance of earned self-esteem and personal humility. On the other hand, it’s a cinch to humiliate pompous, humorless assholes whose self-worth comes entirely from other people’s praise.

Earlier, I was reading Mr. Gates’ own account of what happened — that is, his own attempt to put himself in the best possible light, written a few days after the incident, at which point he ought to have been cooled down:

And he said, “Would you step outside onto the porch.” And the way he said it, I knew he wasn’t canvassing for the police benevolent association. All the hairs stood up on the back of my neck, and I realized that I was in danger. And I said to him no, out of instinct. I said, “No, I will not.”
[…]
So he’s looking at my ID, he asked me another question, which I refused to answer. And I said I want your name and your badge number because I want to file a complaint because of the way he had treated me at the front door. He didn’t say, “Excuse me, sir, is there a disturbance here, is this your house?”— he demanded that I step out on the porch, and I don’t think he would have done that if I was a white person.”

But at that point, I realized that I was in danger. And so I said to him that I want your name, and I want your badge number and I said it repeatedly.

And what I kept thinking was, “For fuck’s sake, can this loser feel a pea through 20 layers of mattresses, too?”

Free clue for Gates: you are not a delicate princess, you are merely a high-strung Haah-vad perfesser who has a gigantic sense of class entitlement because you can write passably well and once got a MacArthur Genius Grant — yet despite your genius, you seem to confuse all white cops with Bull Connor.

Here’s a story on that ports deal. It’s pretty interesting with a lot of facts and perspective. No apology from Bush necessary. In fact, I think he is probably the one owed the apology in this case.

Several factual errors there, buddy. The port deal was about approving the purchase of a foreign owned port operation management company to another foreign owed port operation management company.

United Arab Emirates Firm May Oversee 6 U.S. Ports

A company in the United Arab Emirates is poised to take over significant operations at six American ports as part of a corporate sale, leaving a country with ties to the Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers with influence over a maritime industry considered vulnerable to terrorism.

The Bush administration considers the UAE an important ally in the fight against terrorism since the suicide hijackings and is not objecting to Dubai Ports World’s purchase of London-based Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co.

Bush clearly should have apologized for the federal response to Katrina. Something along these lines would have worked:

“Many people have criticized the federal government’s response to Hurricane Katrina. In retrospect, those criticisms were clearly justified. FEMA’s procedures are based on the assumption that, in the event of a natural disaster, the affected state and local governments will respond appropriately to mitigate the disaster’s effects in the crucial first few days.

“Obviously, with respect to the governments of the state of Louisiana and, in particular, the city of New Orleans, we never should have made those assumptions. Anyone who has studied the history of the region knows that basic competence is simply the capability of the governments in question.

“For our failure to take these basic facts into account when calibrating the federal response to Katrina, I apologize, and pledge that we will never again make such a mistake.”

If licensing management of the ports was a good move, and Bush believed sincerely it was best for the country, why did he abandon it so quickly when the news came out?

Here’s an interesting slideshow of other racist images, tweets, emails, and statements made in the last few months about Obama— by Republicans.

Dated 7/7, so it doesn’t even include the most recent craziness.

The rise of President Obama as the first black president has ushered in an uncomfortable era for the nation’s casual racists. While the urge to entertain friends and colleagues with historical stereotypes and hurtful prejudices has clearly become irresistible, what happens when that desire conflicts with one’s duties as a GOP office-holder, strategist, or activist? When is it appropriate to compare President Obama to a monkey, or make a quip about his presumed love of watermelons, for example? The quandary is only heightened by our new age of social media, in which private jokes can easily become public. As they continue to navigate this moral gray area, most Republican Party members are erring on the side of … erring — making or endorsing racially tinged or outright offensive jokes via e-mail, Twitter, Facebook, and old-fashioned paper, then awkwardly apologizing once they’ve made an ass of themselves. The latest example involved Young Republican vice-chairman Audra Shays, who posted an approving comment after a friend’s dubious joke on her Facebook page last week, but it’s a cycle that’s steadily repeated itself since Obama emerged in last year’s campaign.

Sounds a lot like the righty-blog freakout over Biden asking someone paralysed to stand up.

Tempest, meet teapot. Repeat.

I’m not snarking on you for this and I’m glad you mentioned it, I’m only pointing out how drearily predictable and annoying it is and that it happens on both sides.

Biden knew the guy personally. Presumably he was aware of his paralysis.

That said, I cut Biden slack on that one because I could see it happening in that kind of situation.

But it’s really not the same at all.

Again, policy/legislation.

The closest you could come was the blind reporter and even that was not at all the same as Obama’s nasty remarks that called for apologies.

There is no double standard. You can disagree with a president but you and the press wanted Bush to apologize for not agreeing with you. Note that Rich Lowry is not asking for an apology. He’s pointing out what he thinks are mistakes the Bush administration had made.

You said Bush never apologized for his ‘garbage’. What garbage? And not just style/decisions you disagree with. I’m talking behavior that warranted an apology.

I’m making many typos today. :P Sorry.

Well, you got me there. Policies and decisions and style are excluded from what he did wrong. As are topics I disagreed with him on. So I have to find non-policy, non-decision, non-style behavior that I agreed with him on, but that I nonetheless believe demands an apology?

The moral equivelence is getting thick.

You’re kidding, right?

I think Obama’s stimulus plan is one of the worst pieces of pork-laden, crony-paying-off legislation going. Do I demand an apology for it? No. It’s policy/legislation. Do I criticize him for it? Yes.

re: #550 capitalist piglet

I do, but not the way you think. As for getting into a back-and-forth, it looks like you already have your hands full. See Wendya’s #540. She nailed it.

Obama doesn’t know how to behave in a presidential way, and I suppose GWB had an advantage in that regard, having been the son of a VP/POTUS - but for all his supposed sophistication, intelligence, and grace, Barack Obama - even with an nearly unanimously complicit press - is stumbling worse than President Bush ever did.

cp, Yes, wendya did nail it. Absolutely. Please see my white flag at #570.

As for your second paragraph, I have never claimed otherwise. It’s superfluous to my point. I’m not arguing over who’s the “best” president. I’m talking about a double standard. Do you deny that there is a double standard in play?

Obama revealed himself as a true racist in his first press conference, where he blathered on about ‘blacks get pulled over more…blahblah”.

yeah, Barry, maybe in the 50’s. Now a cop pulls over Rodney King and they let him go BECAUSE he is black.

Obama, ( and I believe most blacks in America) are the real racists now. They are ones obsessed with determining motive, not evaluating actions.

The cop was in the right. bottom line is that Proff Gates just didn’t like Whitey teling him what to do, even if the cop’s actions were to gaurantee Gates’ safety and protection of property.

re: #548 iceweasel

Here’s an interesting slideshow of other racist images, tweets, emails, and statements made in the last few months about Obama— by Republicans.

Dated 7/7, so it doesn’t even include the most recent craziness.

[Link: nymag.com…]

Bolding mine. “Most Republican party members”. Wow. That doesn’t put up a red flag of bias for you? Nope. I’m sure it doesn’t.

Do I deny the racism? No. Does it disgust me? Yes. Do I think the same kind of slide show could be made from the opposite perspective? Absolutely.

A cherry picked batch of quotes may give us the willies knowing those people are out there, but does it define the party? No. Does Cynthia McKinney define the Democrats?

589 Pianobuff  Fri, Jul 24, 2009 2:29:15pm

So Crowley’s AA partner thinks everything was handled ok…

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — A black police officer who was at Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s home when the black Harvard scholar was arrested says he fully supports how his white fellow officer handled the situation.

Sgt. Leon Lashley says Gates was probably tired and surprised when Sgt. James Crowley demanded identification from him as officers investigated a report of a burglary. Lashley says Gates’ reaction to Crowley was “a little bit stranger than it should have been.”

Asked if Gates should have been arrested, Lashley said supported Crowley “100 percent.”

Gates has said he was the victim of racial profiling.

President Barack Obama says the officers “acted stupidly.” Lashley called Obama’s remark “unfortunate” and said he should be allowed to take it back.

If licensing management of the ports was a good move, and Bush believed sincerely it was best for the country, why did he abandon it so quickly when the news came out?

He didn’t abandon it quickly. He tried to explain it, but it was talking to a brick wall since the media, for the most part, only wanted to report on the people who were hysterically making baseless accusations. Did you read the article I linked? It explains pretty well that there are not many of these management companies in the world.

He did believe it was a decent deal. Maybe he abandoned it because it was not going to be worth it in the end once both sides started throwing uninformed hysteria at it, the press reporting it honestly, and congress threatening to make economy destroying laws to ‘solve the problem’. He made the best decision. Perhaps both times, but we’ll never know.

I didn’t misrepresent our discussion at all. I’m giving you my impression of it. You had very little to say about Boxer (what seemed to me amounted to, “I don’t like her, let’s move on!”), and it certainly didn’t appear to me that you had any desire to discuss it in any detail.

And when I called you out on your double-standard, using quotes from your own posts (broad-brushing Republicans on racism, but rejecting the “abstract” when it comes to racism on the other side), you chose that moment to drop the topic, as far as I am aware.

In any case, my point is that you know very well that racism is pervasive on the left. Its manifestation may be different than on the right, but there is no question it is there. And that’s what makes your little exchange with your partner a whole lot of disingenuous, smug liberal bullshit.

Nice try, but Rich Lowry there is pointing out strategy mistakes, a different category from being a jerk. I don’t expect politicians to apoligize for defects (or differences) of wisdom, but I do for defects, or lapses, of character.

I better example for Bush would be when he called a certain reporter a name when he didn’t know he was being taped. I don’t know if he apoligized for that or not; I would be surprised if he didn’t, and disappointed if he didn’t.

He did apologize. He said he’d heard the guy was an asshole and Cheney replied “big time”. So, really, Cheney called the guy an asshole, but they were both culpable. The guy is an asshole, though. ;D

After Susan Alamo’s death in 1982, Alamo began focusing his tracts on bashing Catholicism and the Vatican. His ministry, built on the backs of followers who worked in various businesses to support the church, designed and sold elaborate denim jackets for celebrities.
Federal agents seized a large portion of his assets in the 1990s to settle tax claims after courts declared his operations a business, not a church. Among items offered for auction were the plans for the studded jacket Michael Jackson wore on his “Bad” album.

Well, your impression of it is wrong. You said I “didn’t want to talk about it.” I replied to your note, I talked about it. If there was another note asking me to elaborate, I didn’t see it. What more would you like me to say negatively about Boxer? How many words? I’ll be glad to try.

I have never said racism is not pervasive on the left. Link, please. And my “partner” does not post on LGF. Why is my home life any of your concern?

“Someone else could find”? You say this, based on what? Intuition?

The article posted has links.

If you have a similar number of links to about racist Democrats, of roughly the same time frame and same prominence, please list them. Otherwise, you’re guessing.

And at the risk of being snarky, I’m jotting my prediction of your answer to this on a piece of paper, to compare with your reply.

Okay, snarkbot, no I have not sat down and made a slideshow of recent and past racist statements by Democrats. They can easily be found. Holder, the AG of this country has made them. Robert Byrd … obvious. Cynthia McKinney has made numerous nasties. Joe Biden likes to have a bit of fun with Indians.

No, I’m not putting links in. Anyone who has had their eyes open for the past two to four years has seen them, so don’t snark your way out of it by saying I didn’t prove anything. It’s been public. And these people are far more influential in their party than the head of the Young Republicans. Sheesh.

But here’s a guy with a YouTube channel devoted to this and other like subjects, so maybe you’ll enjoy that.

Bottom line, I don’t disagree that any racism is uncalled for and should be called out when encountered. I just disagree that racism can only be found in the Republican party. And I think it’s unfair to characterize all or even the majority of Republicans as racists.

Does that answer come close to your prediction?

There’s racism everywhere, and on both political sides.

Also, it’s common for many people in the US to stereotype the south as being racist— but in fact, many white southerners will have stories to tell about how white people from the north immediately tell their racist jokes to them, assuming that they have to think the same way, because they’re from the south right?

Similarly with sexism. That also crosses political (and gender) lines.

Thanks for the amendment, Tats. I hate to be mistaken for an Obama fan. :)

One more question. You say you believe both presidents have different motivations. Right?

It’s impossible for human beings to know motivations, because we can’t read minds. We can only assume. Right?

I meant to elaborate on this— the American South has served in many ways as a scapegoat for the racism that also exists in the north and elsewhere.

I’m open to the idea that some of the more racist elements on the extreme right serve as a scapegoat in the same way—that is, we all think hey, I can’t be a racist because I wouldn’t do X, where X is something obviously racist (like the photoshop of Obama as a witch-doctor, or worse)

But that doesn’t mean that racism isn’t still with all of us in more subtle ways. By making a scapegoat out of the more obvious and extreme forms of racism, it becomes easier to overlook the more subtle ways in which we ourselves might be racist.

I actually have a story from my dad. No link, it’s just part of the past. We lived in Minnesota, but my dad’s boat was registered in Alabama. He was in the Navy, BTW, that’s why the odd registration. Anyway, he went to launch in a lake and the man who ran the boat launch started talking to him about what racists southerners are. My dad just put up with it because he just wanted to launch the damn boat.

So then, here come a couple of Native-Americans from the reservation with fishing poles and the man goes off on them. They aren’t welcome at his launch. They and their kind can go fish someplace else.

My dad said “wasn’t that racist?”

The man replied, “they’re not human.”

That’s anecdotal, but it’s definitely true.

In any case — I have encountered racists of every color/religion/occupation all over this country. Including the south, but particularly in Chicago and New Jersey. I don’t fall into the trap of saying any one group is MORE racist than another. But I will defend a group from it, especially if that accusation is made by a biased source.

re: #548 iceweasel

Here’s an interesting slideshow of other racist images, tweets, emails, and statements made in the last few months about Obama— by Republicans.

Dated 7/7, so it doesn’t even include the most recent craziness.

[Link: nymag.com…]

Ice, here’s the big problem that I have with that article:

As they continue to navigate this moral gray area, most Republican Party members are erring on the side of … erring — making or endorsing racially tinged or outright offensive jokes via e-mail, Twitter, Facebook, and old-fashioned paper, then awkwardly apologizing once they’ve made an ass of themselves

Using “most” instead of some other quantitative modifier like “some” or “a disturbing number” or “too many” turns this from legitimate criticism into a cheap slur.

Incidentally, I also think that a few of the “racism” examples were actually quite trivial (albeit witless), and any African-Americans who feel offended by them badly need to work on developing their Not Being A Total Pansy skills.

I’m thinking, in particular, of the “fried chicken and watermelon” ones — yeah, they’re stereotypes, and pathetically hackneyed as “jokes,” but in the end all they do is attribute to blacks a propensity for loving certain foods that nearly everyone American of every hue enjoys cramming into their mouths.

In stark contrast, any black person would be quite justified in taking offense at the “witch doctor Obama” image, because what THAT attributes to blacks is pre-scientific ignorance and superstition. And while enjoying succulent fried chicken and watermelon is entirely harmless in moderation, being a superstitious ignoramus is a bad thing in any degree.

To offer a personal parallel (since I’m not black), if anyone were to say that “practically all gay men engage in bareback anal sex,” I’d be rather offended because barebacking (except possibly in the context of a 100% monogamous relationship) is such a sordidly irresponsible practice that has infected hundreds of thousands of idiotic gay men with HIV in the U.S. alone. And I don’t like having that kind of objectively bad badness attributed to those gay men who are responsible enough to always wear a raincoat for their bufu activities (never mind the minority of guys like me who avoid backdoor frolics altogether).

But if someone says “practically all gay men worship ABBA,” why should I give a flying fuck frot? Because even though it perpetuates a stereotype, there’s nothing at all harmful or disgraceful about appreciating ABBA’s music. (As opposed to, say, buying tickets for a Cher concert.)

re: #662 kynna

i agree with you, and your dad’s anecdote completely reinforces the ones I’ve heard.

I think a lot of non-southerners in the US are happy to stereotype (falsely) the south as being filled with horrible racists, and this helps others to believe that they can’t be racist (even though they are).

I’m making a point about the flap over racism like that witch-doctor image, or some of the horrific stuff said by some extremists on the right now— those things are racist and condemning them can make it easier to pretend that ‘we’re not racists’, because we wouldn’t do those things.

I’m actually making a point about residual racism on the left and center, not condemning all republicans (and only republicans) for racism.

Hey throbert— thanks for your comment, lots to think about.

I completely agree with you about the content of the snarky first page, btw— obviously not all or ‘most’ republicans are racists or sending racist mesages.

I have to disagree with you about some other things though:

I’m thinking, in particular, of the “fried chicken and watermelon” ones — yeah, they’re stereotypes, and pathetically hackneyed as “jokes,” but in the end all they do is attribute to blacks a propensity for loving certain foods that nearly everyone American of every hue enjoys cramming into their mouths.

Disagree, because of the long history of portraying black people in a racist way with those foods. It just isn’t the same. Compare this: I’m Irish, and I would find it really offensive if every portrayal of an Irish person involved alcohol— even though nearly every American of every background likes it. Portrayals of the Irish with alcohol are different because of the history in the US and the UK of portraying the Irish as subhuman and with a special love for the drink. In the same way, showing black people with fried chicken and watermelon has a special significance. I would have found emails of the White House under JFK showing potatoes growing and kegs in the Rose Garden to be offensive.

BTW, I agree with you about ABBA, as opposed to cher. :)

Racist?

*Broad brush strokes. Outliers are to be expected.*

Some things that I have noticed by personal observation:

Navajo don’t like Hopi. Neither like Apaches. None of the three care much for Comanche. None of the four seem to like Mexicans too much. Mexicans return the lack of affection.

White southerners circa 1960 didn’t care for black southerners as a group, though often held individual blacks in high regard. Neither cared too much for northerners. Southerners circa 2009 still speak in what can only be called racist terms to each other. I am known as ‘Casper’ to Walt, who I call ‘Spooky’. When, in the early 70s Kibbs BBQ was an after hours juke joint I was known as ‘Spot’. Now that Kibbs has a couple of popular eating establishments I’m called ‘White Debbil’ when I go into the kitchen to see the cook. Walt calls the part of Arkansas in which I live ‘Honky Heaven’ while I still refer to his area of Arkansas as the ‘Plantation’. It does not detract from our friendship, which dates back to 1959. We don’t agree on lots of things. Walt’s momma used to whip me harder than she did Walt, but my aunt still scares Walt spitless. For a backwards, racist area, there is a lot of interracial dating and marriage.

Blacks in the south used to be spread out pretty much everywhere. Now they are concentrated in more urban areas. This has less to do with racism than it has to do with the decline in manpower needed to work the land. When you don’t live with people, it is easy to marginalize or demonize them. As it is in much of the country, the most segregated day of the week is Sunday. Churches are still mostly one color or another.

The real difference among Americans is class and lately money. One might say that as race-mixing becomes the norm, class will become the only difference.

Alabama? Holy sh*t!” he exclaimed.

The engineer laughed and said, “What’s wrong with Alabama?”

“Well, you’d better watch yourself,” the driver said. “You know, the people down there are not exactly rocket scientists.”

“You’re not going to believe this,” the engineer said, “but where I’m moving to, everybody is a rocket scientist.”

The driver then changed the subject, to N-word jokes.

The driver then changed the subject, to N-word jokes.

holy crap!
I’m not surprised, Ed, either by the assumption that people in Alabama are stupid, OR by the final sentence.

As of this moment, by his statements and actions, Obama has made it clear he has no idea about the protocols and procedures and pressures that law enforcement (and military, by extension) have upon their shoulders.

This makes me angry. As POTUS, he should have never involved himself in a jurisdictional matter. If I were a police officer (an honorable one, at that), my next traffic stop, domestic disturbance call, drug bust, patrol, et cetera, would be dominated by the thought that if the suspect (not the criminal, just the person suspected of something until proven otherwise) were to be black, all he would have to do is cry “racism”, and not only would my career be called into question (distinguished as it may be), the POTUS would make it a point to belittle me and my decisions, regardless of whether or not I acted in accordance to my precincts standard operating procedures.

What a horrible thing to have to worry about, as a Law Enforcement Officer. I know one thing for sure. I would have never had to worry about that under G.W.B. Or Clinton, for that matter.

IIRC they were speaking of a New York Times reporter. Don’t recall the name but it doesn’t matter that place is an A-hole farm.

Actually, a writer for New York Magazine, charles.

But you can’t trust anything anybody in New York says. Even if they cite factual sources for it. Damn liberals. Or all of New England, for that matter. Actually, the whole East Coast. Worthless. Sure cuts down on the stuff I have to read, to get a balanced picture of things, politically.

I think he’s referring to the Bush/Cheney ‘asshole/big time’ conversation. That guy’s last name was Clymer. For years after that ‘scandal’ the word Clymer was synonymous with the word ‘asshole’. I’m not sure if that’s still true. But Cheney is still nicknamed ‘big time’.

Oops. Sorry, kynna. I assumed he was talking about the NY Mag article.

My mistake. Thanks for clearing that up.

In a recent Rasmussen poll it showed that BHO has a 41% approval rating among whites and a 97% approval rating among blacks. Racism in this country will continue to be an issue not only until whites can judge people by the content of their character, but when blacks do as well.

In the same way that black people accuse white police officers of being racist, BHO accused that police officer of being racist because he was white.

Rasmussen webpage data:

July 20, 2009: The President earns approval from 41% of white voters, 97% of black voters, and 58% of all other voters.

Charpete: I hope I’m misreading you. Are you suggesting that black people are racist because they approve of President Obama’s performance? Or are you saying that 97 percent of black people are poor judges of character?

Either way, I don’t like the direction you’re going. Please enlighten me.

The moment IS certainly “teachable.” The question is whether Pres. Obama will choose to be EDUCABLE in this matter. Time will tell.

97% of black people are racist and poor judges of character?…hardly, and don’t like that you see it that way. If 97% of white people supported a white president, would you say that 97% of white people are racist and poor judges of character?…of course not.

I will say that if 97% of white people supported a white candidate over a black candidate, you would have to assume that race is a factor…not all 97% are racist, but to say that only 3% oppose the policies and performance of any president in a country that is almost evenly divided would be difficult to believe.

I resemble that remark! I get your point. I trust everything some New Yorkers said. My father was born and raised in Manhattan. He lived and worked in NYC his whole life. That is until his 3rd child was born(yours truly). Then he moved wayyy out to the ‘burbs. Less than 18 miles due East of the Empire State Building. He commuted every day to Manhattan and read The NY Times everyday on the train. That man never lied to me in his life.My four brothers also work in Manhattan they don’t lie either.

In that case, I don’t understand what you mean by this:

Racism in this country will continue to be an issue not only until whites can judge people by the content of their character, but when blacks do as well.

So having a different political view than you is a character flaw, in black people?

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like you’re implying a lot more than you’re willing to say outright. But I’ll let this one go, and move on to other things.

Can we always use “bad word choice” as an excuse like Nobama and Sotominor?

Like if a called my wife a name… I could just say oh sorry that was bad word choice. I should have left the word dumb off the beginning and all would be forgiven? It doesn’t work that way in my experience.

For some reason or lack there of when thinking of Obama, the word ‘mendacity’ comes to mind along with a debilitating migraine from the mere thinking about Obama.
Someone should start an Obama-isms list, but that might be a stupidly thing to do.

As far as Bush apologizing, I googled it and found this:

Hmmm. I don’t know how to make it into a hyperlink. But I guess y’all can cut and paste until I learn. A teachable moment, right?

He also apologized to auto workers for an off-the-cuff comment:

I’m positive there are others.

“I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”

So this individual notices that a cop is approaching… what could be wrong with not giving a cop a benefit of the doubt? After all, sovereignty is a divine gift to the individual, who decides to borrow it to the state (or not), and not the other way round. If a cop intends to interfere with individual sovereignty it should be able to reason, or get rejected like any non governmental thug attempting subordination games against random encounters.

that’s actually not what he said at all. the appearance would be that race factors in simply because 97% appreciation in any demographic is highly improbable. it would strongly suggest they approve pretty much just because he’s black — which, is racism as well. it’s positive discrimination, but it discriminates based on skin color just as well.

it’s a shame, really. basically it shows that many people (make that most people) don’t even look at his actual views to judge him. kind of disappointing I’d say.
not that I’m saying that’s a racial characteristic, mind you, stupidity is both universal and potentially infinite ;) it’s just a crying shame that because people like him just for the color of his skin, it’s going to be nigh impossible to discuss his politics while leaving all the nonsense about skin color behind.

of course, we’ve known that for ages now.

(my apologies for my english, I’m not a native speaker and haven’t had much practice lately)
