CNN President Tries to Stop the Birther Craziness on His Network

Lou Dobbs is the latest so-called “conservative” to keep promoting the Nirther insanity long after its sell-by date, and yesterday the president of CNN told him to knock it off (not in so many words): Jon Klein on Birthers: ‘It Seems This Story is Dead’.

TVNewser has learned CNN/U.S. president Jon Klein sent an email to a handful of “Lou Dobbs Tonight” staffers last night regarding the coverage of the so-called birthers and the validity of Pres. Obama’s birth in the U.S.

In part, Klein writes, “It seems this story is dead- because anyone who still is not convinced doesn’t really have a legitimate beef.” Klein asked CNN researchers to dig into the question of why Obama couldn’t produce the original birth certificate. The researchers contacted the Hawaii Health Dept. and confirmed that paper documents were discarded in 2001 when the department went paperless. That reportedly includes Pres. Obama’s original birth certificate.

Klein is wrong, though. The story is not dead, because people who are infected with this brain virus are completely beyond reason. If Barack Obama came out and showed pictures of him emerging from the womb, with a doctor standing nearby holding a 1961 Honolulu Advertiser newspaper and wearing an orchid lei, they’d still find a way to deny it. As with any conspiracy theory, people who believe it don’t let facts or logic get in the way.

Besides the CNN pressure, they are now claiming that Google is suppressing links (e.g., to WND.)

This is the best comment on this subject I've seen made off of this but thus far:

McCain Lawyers Investigated Obama Citizenship

Said Potter: "To the extent that we could, we looked into the substantive side of these allegations. We never saw any evidence that then-Senator Obama had been born outside of the United States. We saw rumors, but nothing that could be sourced to evidence. There were no statements and no documents that suggested he was born somewhere else. On the other side, there was proof that he was born in Hawaii. There was a certificate issued by the state's Department of Health, and the responsible official in the state saying that he had personally seen the original certificate. There was a birth announcement in the Honolulu Advertiser, which would be very difficult to invent or plant 47 years in advance."

Worse still, there comes a point were the conspiracy-believer sees all attempts to dissuade him from believing the conspiracy as validation for his suspicion that there is a conspiracy at work.

Kookspiracy theorists can't let go because of the psychological bond with their theory. They think "being in the know" makes them special, superior. They get it, you don't. Let go of the conspiracy, and they let go of their specialness.

Good grief, how easy was that to find out?

The Certificate of Live Birth that Obama has is the official documentation of birth that is acceptable everywhere. I know. . . I have the Louisiana version because I could not locate my original one when I applied for a passport.

Biggest reason?

Not taking a hint.

A few things will get you gone without a discussion. Expressly advocating the murder of an individual, the desire to commit genocide especially with thermonuclear weapons. Or insulting our host. Remember this Charles' house, it is not a soap box in Central Park. If Charles asks you cease and desist don't argue, it's his house, his reputation.

That said reasoned factual arguments are welcome, however as we've just seen it's hard to reason in favor of racism.

Other than that, most things you'll get a hint first from long time lizards, then by Charles.

To find out about a lizard click the avatar, old ones with lots of karma and lots of comments you should pay attention to.

Avoid the personal, keep the arguments on issue and rely on facts and logic.

It's lot's of fun in here, relax and enjoy.

Uh-oh. It seems that CNN's Klein has now backtracked, after a fashion:

Asked if CNN is concerned that Dobbs’ repeated granting of airtime to theories the network has conclusively debunked amounts to overkill and could harm CNN’s credibility, Klein brushed off the possibility. “We respect our viewers enough to present them the facts and let them make up their own minds,” he said, adding that what Dobbs does is “his editorial decision to make.”

97 theheat  Fri, Jul 24, 2009 5:51:05pm

re: #96 ShanghaiEd

That either means Dobbs got off with a warning, or Dobbs has photos or footage of Klein in full drag, or something else scandalous, and just tipped his hand.

The entire statement about "going paperless" is pure BS. The only way you go paperless is when you have completely copied all of the details. The "live birth certificate" presented by Obama does not show the details. Also, his lawyers fought this whole issue during the campaign. If there was not a more informational copy then why did he oppose the release or hire lawyers to oppose it.

I don't know what he is hiding, but he is not being truthful and transparent. It is as simple as that. People here, or elsewhere, can make fun of the people who are skeptical but that does not change the facts.

If Barack Obama came out and showed pictures of him emerging from the womb, with a doctor standing nearby holding a 1961 Honolulu Advertiser newspaper, they’d still find a way to deny it. Like any conspiracy theory, people who believe it don’t let facts or logic get in the way.

Exactly. Kind of like one of the nuttier factions of the "9/11 was an inside job" twoofers. How crazy does one have to be to say that no planes even hit the World Trade Centers and that all of the live cable feeds that everyone watched on TV and the thousands of live witnesses were either fooled by CGI or some type of "mass hypnosis" or hologram? These people need professional help.

Could I point out the framers of the Constitution thought that being born in the US was important enough to be included in that great document. So those that dare to question this qualification are really devoid of intelligence. Bah!! Those framers of the US Constitution had more intelligence than 95% of those who post on LGF. The many LGF'ers who post here could not have contributed 1/100 toward the origination of that document??
In addition, how many here think that the proof of Obama's birth would stand up in a court of law? The proof that has been offered so far is some Hawaiian officials stating that: hey I have seen the original and, take my word for it, it is the real deal and no one needs to see the original document. Also, no one needs to know anything about the doctor or doctors that we involved.
Obama has spent millions to keep the original under wraps, but don't worry gang, just because the founders of the country thought that being born in the US was important, just move on because there is nothing to see here. Think about it people!!

Those that question whether the President meets the constitutional qualifications to be in his position are stupid kooks without common sense if they don't investigate their claims and back them up with credible evidence. That should go without saying for anyone who makes baseless assertions that defame another person or blanket attack a group of others or claim some sort of supernatural powers. All serious claims, in order to be treated as such, should have credible evidence for them or else they should be dismissed accordingly.

And they have a right to be crazy until they are proven wrong definitievely, and they haven't been yet, right?

Also, I'm sick of hearing about the damn European fascist people. The only play they ever get is when you whine about them. A waste of time for all involved.

The evolution stuff? Well, it was fun for a while, but c'mon. I'm glad that seems done...(?)

A Certificate of Live Birth from Hawaii has been produced.

These things I believe:

I believe that the wreckage found at Roswell in 1947 was a weather balloon.

I believe that Lee Harvey Oswald, a deranged nut if there ever was one, acted alone when he shot and killed JFK.

I believe that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the surface of the moon on July 20, 1969.

I believe that presidential aide Vince Foster, who had been diagnosed with clinical depression, committed suicide in Fort Marcy Park in 1993.

I believe that George W. Bush won the state of Florida in 2000 by several hundred votes, and the state of Ohio in 2004 by over a hundred thousand, and that Diebold had nothing to do with it.

I believe that 19 Arabs, acting at the behest of Osama Bin Laden, hijacked jetliners and flew them into buildings in New York and Arlington, VA, and a field in Pennsylvania, in September 2001. I further believe that fire can soften steel (how do you thing steel is made and formed, anyway?), and that probably no building in the world could withstand a 500+ mph impact from a 300,000 lb aircraft, followed by a raging, jet fuel fire in the heart of the structure.

I believe that President Bush honestly believed that Saddam Hussein possessed WMD, and was genuinely surprised to learn that was not the case.

I believe that Barack Obama is a terrible President who happens to have been born in Honolulu, HI, in August 1961.

I believe that conspiracy theories, in general, are not feasible and do not pass the common sense test.

I believe that Nirthers, Troofers, moon landing denialists, BDS sufferers, and other conspiracy morons are foocking lo-o-o-o-s-e-r-r-r-s!

That is all.

McCain Lawyers Investigated Obama Citizenship

"To the extent that we could, we looked into the substantive side of these allegations.

182 Cheese Eating Victory Monkey  Sat, Jul 25, 2009 12:08:28am

According to Wikipedia, a child today can be born abroad to one US citizen parent and be awarded citizenship without naturalization.

(Not that this matters in the nirther case, because he was born in Hawaii.)

Although I am not a "nirther" I appreciate the value of just throwing it out there...Here's a typical exchange with a leftist loon.

Them: Oh my god, did you hear about Obama's luau? Isn't it great that he would pay tribute to his birthplace?

Me: Huh, I didn't know luaus were a Kenyan thing. Besides, isn't the main dish at a luau pork?

Them: BUSH LOVER !!! (as they storm off in a huff)

Oh, the wailing and gnashing of teeth! Gets 'em every time.

I have absolutely no patience with Nirthers any more.

If the frickin' testimony of officials of the state of Hawaii speaking in their official capacity about official state records, the validity of which they are officially certifying... isn't enough, and the records of the local newspaper (which ran contemporary birth announcements) isn't enough, WTF will work for them? Do they need to get Professor Peabody to send them back in the Wayback Machine so they can see the damn birth for themselves?

Do we need to enlist the help of Dr. Who or Sailor Pluto? Do we need to steal the Nanban Mirror from Happosai? Do we need to loop the Enterprise around the sun? What do we need to do here?

What, precisely, do we need to do for them to give it a fucking rest??

During the Apollo Anniversary last week, CNN stupidly decided to run a story about the crazies who believe the landing was faked, and put it on the front page of their website.

This encourages all conspiracy goofballs, and inspires them to yell louder in hopes of getting the same sort of attention showered on them.

Because in the end, it's all about the attention. Not fact.

re: #115 nihilist

Obama is a citizen, in all damn likelihood. BUT definitive 100% proof does not yet exist, now does it? So..while the loony toon nirther freaks might be a band of retards, they still might be right. And they have a right to be crazy until they are proven wrong definitievely, and they haven't been yet, right?

No. Not even close to right. It isn't up to bystanders, or even the accused, to prove that accusations are false. It is up to those making the accusations to prove that they are true. Not through innuendo, implication or distortion, but through positive evidence that demonstrates the validity of their claims.

This is true in court - where any such issues like this would ultimately be resolved (by being laughed out into the hallway). It is true in science. It is true in all logical endeavors. And it is incumbent upon anyone hoping to promote this claim, as well, a task none of them has even come close to shouldering.

Making a ridiculous statement, and then telling your detractors "Oh, yeah? Well, prove me wrong, then!" is the sort of trailer-trash argument offered by supporters of Bigfoot, alien UFO enthusiasts, JFK assassination conspiracists and, in fact, by every other conspiracy-touting asshole on the planet. It is a demand that their opponents prove a negative, a logical impossibility requiring an exhaustive search of the entire Universe to satisfy. And it often deflects the very reasonable demand that positive proof of their own claims - which is nonexistent - be produced.

If anyone claims that 0bama is a citizen of a country other than the United States, it's up to them to produce that proof. But of course, they won't. Because they can't.

There was even a movie about that back in the day. "Capricorn One."

Elliot Gould and James Brolin starred. Either one of them would be a Democratic selling point -- both of them together is a lib wet dream.

NO. It does NOT contradict anything. The state of Hawaii digitized all those records a few years ago. She is obviously referring to the digitized version.

Good grief. A perfect example of what I wrote above.

193 Flyovercountry  Sat, Jul 25, 2009 9:46:42am

Charles,

Do you ever get tired of making the same arguments to people over and over and over again? The internet is both a wonderful and rotten tool. These idiots keep coming back and positing the same, "questions," which have been answered ad infinitim. Moon Landing, Kennedy Assasination, Chem Trails, 911 Truthers are all cut from the same mold. What I find is the most frustrating though, is that you and countless others have answered the same questions, no matter how insane the premise many times; and they still don't get it. Maybe you should start selling soup pots to be worn as special death ray protective helmets or something. At least that way, when they speak in public, their words would be muffled. It doesn't help for keyboards, but I'm sure a tech saavy person such as yourself could come up with a computerized version of the soup pot idea. Once Stinky identifies a Nirther, their typed musings would always appear in pink, until a psychiatrist declares them sane. Just an idea.

194 TheBurbs  Sat, Jul 25, 2009 10:03:29am

More than anything, this flap reminds me of the controversy over Dan Rather and the Magic Typewriter. How could anyone have doggedly pursued the idea that reputable news-people weren't accurate or truthful?

In the birth-certificate controversy, my impression is that the type of document that was provided to the public is not hard evidence of birth in the state of Hawaii, but that people born elsewhere can apply for, and receive, such a document. If anyone can provide reasoned discussion of this particular question (rather than just disparaging me for raising it), I'd appreciate it.

It is not unusual for people to be asked to document that their circumstances are as they say they are. When this happens, the burden of proof is on the person making the claim or the application. For example, a few years back, I volunteered to help with registration for a local youth soccer league. Applicants needed to provide birth certificates. For the would-be soccer players, it was not the place of birth, but evidence of age, that was of interest. If little kids need to apply for admission to a soccer team with birth certificate in hand, it is not unreasonable to expect someone seeking elective office to be similarly forthcoming.

This birth-certificate mishmash is not something occupies much of my time or interest. However, I have to confess to being astonished that the efforts of the people raising the question would arouse so much, and such virulent, opposition -- to the point of taking the trouble to invent the derisive term "nirthers." Yes, perhaps people should have better things to do with their time than question the place of birth of elected officials. But if that's so, it applies equally to people who devote their time to ridiculing those questions.

re: #194 TheBurbs

Those questions are ridiculed because they've been answered already, but despite these answers, the kooks keep insisting on asking their question.

That's worthy of ridicule.

It is odd that all the paperwork was discarded.
My son and daughter were born in England--and even though the UK have been storing birth records, etc, digitally for a number of years, all the old records (in various forms including books) are archived--they have not been destroyed. They have a much longer history to store, too.

I wonder how many states here have discarded old, paper records.

You are wrong. When you request your birth certificate from the state of Hawaii, you get a certificate of live birth, with the official seal of the state of Hawaii. That is what has been released, and it's been verified.

More than once.

re: #176 michaelasher

I dropped off the board last night because I had to deal with something at home. Now:

1. Your blather about middle names is off topic, to start with.

2. You are equating middle initials with middle names.

3. There is no reason a candidate should be forced to use his/her full name in the campaign materials if he/she doesn't feel like it. Historically, most don't, at least most of the time.

4. Those that do use a full middle name with any frequency usually have a reason for it. Ms. Clinton is a feminist, and using her maiden name could help appeal to women. Bill Clinton mostly just used Bill. George W. Bush had to use a middle initial or name to distinguish himself from his father - and he chose the initial, not the full name. JFK mostly used F., but Fitzgerald was sometimes useful because his mother was from a prominent Boston family.

4a. Now, I repeat, Obama's middle name just happens to be the name of a dictator we recently went to war with and deposed. What kind of moron would emphasize that? That would be like a girl running for prom queen, waking up with a zit on the day of the prom, and instead of putting on makeup, circling the zit with purple marker and drawing arrows.

5. By the tone and content of your questions and comments, I'm convinced that you are a smirking bigot and not worth the time I have spent arguing with you.

204 luxomni  Sat, Jul 25, 2009 2:03:50pm

A pox on both their houses. Either side could stop this.

Nirthers I understand even if I don't believe in the ability of groups of people to really keep secrets. Paranoia is the thinking man's mental illness.

What I don't understand is spending a million dollars on principle. I would have long ago released it and said "Feast on this, M***F***s. Now see how stupid they [nirthers] were."

That would be your ultra-conservative, right-wing moron.

206 Sabba Hillel  Sun, Jul 26, 2009 11:13:31am

How about this as a conspiracy theory

THe entire "controversy" is being pushed by the White House in order to discredit his opponents. That is why he refuses to authorize the release of a photostat of his original birth certificate. The more he refuses, the louder the scream from the "nirthers" and the more they are convinced that he is hhiding something. The louder they scream, the more people are distracted from the legitimate reasons to oppose him and more he is likely to sneak his agenda past the people who are not looking in the right direction.

207 treeMack  Mon, Jul 27, 2009 10:19:28am

OK Charles, you say that the full blown Haywain birth certificate has been produced and verified. Can you tell me where I can find that information/verification? And no, the Hawaii state dept and Huffington Post are not reliable verifiers. Where has it been released to? If it's been successfully debunked, why do so many credible people still give it support? i.e. Heritage, PatriotPost, etc.
Is the "Official" birth certificate posted somewhere? Oh wait, it was lost in a fire. how convenient.

Given the string and lies and spin put out by the BHO admin, I hesitate to give them any credence with out intense review. You however, have a fairly good rep with me. It is almost beyond to pale to believe that Democrats in the know would allow this to happen if true. Yet, you could say the same thing for much of what is currently happening via the actions of this administration. These actions resulting in the curtailment and systematic destruction of much of what makes our country great. America a socialist country? nah, couldn't happen. But look were we are now.

last question? Was the statement that B.O's granny said she saw him being born in Kenya ever debunked?

Just askin?

208 JEA62  Mon, Jul 27, 2009 12:18:37pm
