US Announces $200M to Palestinians

Middle East • Views: 3,291

It’s a good thing we’re not having any kind of recession or financial crisis or massive deficit or anything like that here in the US, so we can afford to send $200 million in aid to Palestinians.

And that’s just the first installment — we’ve promised almost a billion smackeroos to Fatah.

WASHINGTON, July 24 (Reuters) - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Friday there had been some progress toward reviving Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in the “near future” and announced $200 million in U.S. aid to the Palestinians.

Clinton said the money, which is part of a $900 million pledge she made in March at a donors conference in Egypt, was transferred directly to the Western-backed Palestinian Authority and would help it meet a budget shortfall.

The PA will say they're going to play nicey-nice. They won't actually follow that up with any nicey-nice behavior. Right now, absent the bribes, they aren't even talking the talk. And the left loves the talk enough to pay big $$ for it.

I have no idea who you voted for, the aid been given for over 15 years apparently. Yet another Bush policy that Obama followed that I'm not fond of.

"President Bush has proposed a sixfold increase in aid to the Palestinians, including $150 million in direct cash transfers to the Palestinian Authority, in an effort to bolster the government in advance of a Middle East peace conference planned for later this month in Annapolis.

The $435 million in additional aid, on top of $77 million requested earlier this year, has attracted little notice in the president's $45.9 billion supplemental request last week to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. But, if approved, it would constitute the administration's largest amount of direct aid to the Palestinian Authority. "

If the U.S. and Europe didn't send billions to the Palis, they would collapse and then have to make peace in order build up their own economy. And then once they actually had an economy, going to war wouldn't be so attractive.

We couldn't have that.

No, no, much easier this way.

The arab regimes get to point the Islamists somewhere else and divert their masses from the horrible conditions that obtain there. We keep the oil flowing.

I mean could you image what the oil business would look like if there were educated Arabs in these states who wanted a share of their nation's wealth? It'd be $10 a gallon of gas.

It's tough on the Jews, but since when has the West really cared about them anyway? Besides, the idea of getting off of oil is just anti American. Better this way.

That reminds me, time to buy another gun. This one gun a month law we have here in California really gets expensive after awhile.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Friday there had been some progress toward reviving Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in the "near future" and announced $200 million in U.S. aid to the Palestinians.

Clinton said the money, which is part of a $900 million pledge she made in March at a donors conference in Egypt, was transferred directly to the Western-backed Palestinian Authority and would help it meet a budget shortfall.

So, do they have to acknowledge Israel's right to exist yet?

/sorry, rhetorical question

Avanti is (shudder) correct. This is a bi-partisan stupidity and has been for decades.

Unfortunately, US money isn't the half of it...

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

"Saudi Arabia is the largest provider of aid to the Palestinian people. Since 2002, Saudi Arabia has given more than $480 million in monetary support to the Palestinian Authority, and has supported Palestinian refugees by contributing to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). Through the Arab League it has provided more than $250 million for the Palestinians, and pledged $500 million in assistance over the next three years at the Donors Conference in Dec 2007. Unlike aid from other nations, Saudi Arabian aid to Palestinians was not disrupted by the election of Hamas."

Now go look up the state budgets of Maryland, Delaware, or any of the smaller New England states and compare them to this link...

[Link: www.cia.gov...]

...and then compare that link to this one...

Obama plays golf - again.

President Obama has become quite the golf fanatic since he began his presidency.

The commander in chief is out on the links again today, playing a round at Andrews Air Force Base. This is the 10th time in as many weeks that Obama has found time to squeeze in some golf (all weekends, except for one Monday.)

In fact, the White House press corps has come up with a nickname to refer to the President's golfing habits: "The First Duffer," as they refer to him in pool reports when he's hitting the links.

We have a prez who loves giving our money away and who loves golf. Reassuring that he's busy working on our economic woes and unemployment.

127 Mad Prophet Ludwig  Sun, Jul 26, 2009 4:04:22pm

As to the Bush did it first...

Actually this goes back to before Carter.

The honest truth is that both parties suck with this.

The average American likes Israel more than the Arabs and a subset of profoundly religious Christians believes in the notion of Israel as part of their faith.

The right, wants to keep the oil flowing and, while perhaps they do not usually openly hate Israel as much as the Left, they are perfectly happy to throw bones to their pet states, you know our friends the Saudis and the other Muslim petroleum suppliers.

The lesson was made a bit more clear to Nixon with the embargo. Since then, there has been a sort of understanding that the Arabs get to pick on Israel and that the US will only step in if things get out of hand. Of course back then, Israel was seen as much more of a bulwark against Russian expansionism.

The Left is another matter. If your mantra is Western Civilization = evil oppressor, then the idea that Westerners who are proud of being a part of one of the founding Western Civilizations, are anything other than oppressors is anathema. If you throw into this mix the fact that the Israelis kick ass, the Left must assume that Israel must be the oppressor and the wrong side, because only bad people have successful militaries.

Israel is caught between the unrealistic views of many in the West and the all too cynical numbers that come with petrochemical dependence.

I was being somewhat sarcastic in previous comment on this thread. Now I am dead serious.

'Hamas may get claws into Gaza aid'
By YAAKOV KATZ AND HERB KEINON

Increasingly concerned that Hamas will steal money donated for Gaza's rehabilitation, the Defense Ministry distributed a document this week revealing that unions affiliated with the terrorist group have set up joint committees with UN agencies that dispense humanitarian aid.

The document was distributed to the Foreign Ministry, Finance Ministry and the Israeli intelligence community, and was also sent to the United States to warn it that the $900 million it has pledged to help rebuild the Gaza Strip could fall into Hamas hands.

"All humanitarian aid sent into the Gaza Strip today needs to receive Hamas clearance," a senior defense official told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday. "Hamas uses violence against international organizations, including UNRWA, if they do not cooperate."

BTW, Arafat's widow, who lives in Paris, gets $26 million a year from the PLA (I guess for keeping her mouth shut).

So, of this $200 million, only $174 million, at best, will reach the Palestinians.

But that is before deductions made for Abbas, etc.

Putting an "R" behind the President's name doesn't make it better. The fact this country is currently in worse financial straights than under Bush compounds the issue, for me.

Well the economy did actually hit the ground on Bush's watch, Obama is just currently watching it bounce and trying to nurse it back to health with various weird measures.

Israel unilaterally gives away Gush Katif to the Arab Palestinians with a thriving greenhouse economy. The Palestinians destroy irrigation, buildings etc. and begin terrorizing the Israelis. It sounds like land for peace is the way to go. This "foreign aid" to the Palestinians will obviously be well spent by investing further in rockets, bombs, and other economic investments to help improve the lives of their people.
