Birthers on the Hill

Weird • Views: 3,709

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you your elected Republican officials. Only one, Trent Franks (R-Arizona), issues an unequivocal denunciation of the Birth Certificate loons. Most of the others avoid the question, and one or two seem to be Nirthers themselves.

Youtube Video

It really stinks that Huffington Post and Mike Stark are milking these Nirther morons for every drop of bad publicity.

But if the GOP won’t do something about their own nutroots, they deserve it.

And I’m not just talking about Nirthers. For example, when Sarah Palin refuses to answer a direct question and admit that bombing an abortion clinic is “terrorism,” she’s doing it for the same reason — she’s pandering to the extremists in the base. (And really turning off people like me.)

(Hat tip: Killgore.)

During the election, there was a brief flurry of interest in the theory that John McCain was actually not eligible to run for president, because he was born in the Panama Canal Zone, and therefore was not actually a "natural born citizen."

IIRC, even the crazed moonbats on sites like Kos and digg.com dismissed that one pretty quickly, saying things like "we should vote against McCain because he's a clone of Bush who literally wants to declare war on every other country for the next hundred years! But he's certainly eligible to run."

Republicans won't admit how down and dirty their politics are. They say this about the Dems all the time, but they are just as guilty. They did it to Clinton from when he was governor and before even, about his roving eye. Somehow these Republican twits put themselves morally above him. We know better today (we knew better then, but whatever).

I personally don't think the nirther delusion has anything to do with race, in most cases. Here's the reply to the nirthers from a blogger who subscribes to the Henry Gates school of politics: the nirther thing is actually all about race!

Apart from the frothing going on over there, I need to point out that conspiracy theories often have a racist core. You'll notice, for example, that the ancient structures von Daniken alleges were built by aliens all reside in places inhabited by people with dark skin; monuments like Stonehenge, the Roman Coliseum or the great cathedrals of Europe never make the list, despite being of similar age and complexity to those attributed to extraterrestrials by vD. Those monuments, of course, were built by White Folk, who were obviously smart enough to do it themselves, unlike their darker, more primitive counterparts elsewhere who could only have built such things with the help of an advanced race.

Same with a host of 911 conspiracies, all of which deny that such a plot could have been carried out by swarthy Middle Eastern followers of a primitive religion, and which posit the actual perpetrators to have been more intelligent White Folks who were also smart enough to cover their tracks in layers upon layers of misdirection.

And the demand for 0's birth certificate also falls into this pattern. Has anyone demanded Bubba's Original Birth Certificate? Heck no - everybody knows that a White Boy is qualified to be President. 0, though - well, that's suspicious, what with him being a half-breed and all.

Please note that there should be enormous sarcasm tags around some of my comments. But the point is that racism often lies at the root of conspiracy theories, and it isn't hard to see it at work in this case, either. It broadens the appeal of the idea among a certain class of people.

Good points, and I'm sure that some nirthers are driven by some inner intuition that a black man simply can't be "real American" enough to be the president.

But I don't think there's any worthwhile information to be gained by comparatively looking at the absence of interest in Bill Clinton's birth certificate, or Hillary's. Race and nationality are confounded in Obama's case. He's the first major black candidate, but he's also the first recent major candidate who had a foreign father and was raised overseas.

From later in the article:

"Sutch's album Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends was named in a 1998 BBC poll as the worst album of all time, a status it also held in Colin Larkin's book The Top 1000 Albums of All Time, despite the fact that Jimmy Page, John Bonham, Jeff Beck, Noel Redding and Nicky Hopkins performed on it and helped write it."

Thank you for posting that. An interesting article. I couldn't help but notice this:

“Twenty-five percent of my people believe the Pentagon and Rumsfeld were responsible for taking the twin towers down,” said Rep. Collin Peterson, a Democrat who represents a conservative Republican district in Minnesota. “That’s why I don’t do town meetings.”

I suspect that not doing town meetings might be a good beginning of a strategy.

Today, from the Office of Double Standards (ODS), Rule #1:

1. Requesting information about a Democratic officeholder is natural curiosity on the part of an engaged citizenry.

Sample dialog: "The guy could put a stop to all this, today, by just showing us the stuff. What does he have to hide? Where there's smoke, etc..."

2. Requesting information about a GOP officeholder is "a fishing expedition," "a witch hunt," or both.

Sample dialog: "Admit it, all you're wanting to do is dig up dirt to make the guy look bad. It's just a distraction from all the problems we have. Jeez, Louise, dude, man up and get over it. The guy won, and you need to suck it up and get a life."

3. Repeat as necessary.

A similar issue was brought up regarding McCain, but was almost instantly dropped.

It isn't so much that racism is an intentional feature built in to these theories by bigots. But it's an important factor in which theories gain traction. There's an inherent streak of xenophobia in the human race, and a theory claiming that those outside your own ethnic group are inferior in some way has an unfortunate appeal to a broad range of people.

I didn't care much for the article you reference, but I thought this point was worth mentioning because the the idea of racism in this regard isn't completely without merit.

Since the left has a greater voice and media influence than the right the hypocrisy of the right will always overshadow the radicals on the left. If the GOP purge the loony birds and grassy knoll associates, what will be left of the party?

Being a fiscal conservative and strong believer in the benefits of supply-side economics, I would loath the democrats getting another 2,4, 8 years with the executive and legislative branches under their domain. What is more scary, radical right nirthers or over a trillion dollars pushed into the economy with no short term benefit and long term crippling?

I will never, every vote for someone with (D) in front of (insert pronoun possessive for gender) name, never.

"Republicans are stupid. I'm going to change my political party affiliation to Democrat".

Translation:
I'm gonna abandon my principles and embrace things that yesterday were abhorrent to me.

Really?

Are Democrats that appealing? Think about why you were mocking them only a few months ago. Have they changed that much? Why embrace their policies? If the Republican party is heading off in the wrong direction - which it is - then we need a new party.

Now is not the time to throw support at those who wish to tax the hell out of us all, abandon personal responsibility, and spend like the well will never go empty.

True, and while I don't think you're really disagree with SixDegrees, I think he's seriously on to something here (with appropriate kudos to the authors he's read). It does explain a viewpoint that I have never understood about these 9/11 Truthers. While at first blush I found the birth certificate interesting, too many people have come out and confirmed that the certificate is real and valid. If you're going to say all those people are in on the "conspiracy", then you're running dangerously close to believe 9/11 as well.

Here's a question for SixDegrees, as he has studied this: Are there any similar types of Alien claims for interesting architecture in India, Nepal, China, etc? I'm thinking of third- and fourth-world locations (not an accurate description, I know, but bear with me) that may not have had much coverage. Those would seem to be ripe for alien interpretation, it would seem.

I'm not sure of the extent of such things; I can't read von Daniken without getting a major headache and high blood pressure. I vaguely recall some Asian engravings making it into at least one of his books, but I couldn't say for sure.

More recently, there's the whole "The US tricked the Japanese into starting WWII" theory, whose underlying theme is that the Japanese just weren't smart enough to have pulled off such an attack as Pearl Harbor on their own.

Last night a few of us had a conversation about the demonization of "the other side". The thing is that we all do it, right and left. Silly as it is because there are certainly REAL reasons/issues we can point to and say this is a little kooky. The nirthers are one and the code pinkers are another.

The difference, however, is that Code Pink does NOT make up the majority of Democrats. You can call liberals commies all day long, but that doesn't make it so. That, btw, is demonizing the other side. And you're not happy when the Left does it to you.

I switched to Independent quite awhile ago thinking I might want to become Republican, but I'll be going back to the Dems. I'm not comfy as an Independent. And I'd die before joining this backward party.

Excellent post and I agree with everything in it. I would only add this: it is very difficult to see the ongoing demand for Obama's university transcripts, the demands for more detail about what he wrote and who he took classes with, as anything other than the expression of a similar kind of racism-- and resentment.

A White Boy just doesn't arouse the same kind of resentment when he attends an Ivy---even if he's a C student, even if he's a legacy. The left mocked Bush as stupid, made fun of his grades and his legacy status, but there was never a full on witchhunt to track down all his professors and everything he'd written.

Crowley says in the police report that the caller mentioned race to him when they spoke in person, on the street. So these newly published tapes won't speak to that.

As Charles as so astutely pointed out, I have also noticed that the birth certificate conspiracy seems to be gaining momentum not only with fringe groups but with mainstream conservative groups as well.

It saddens me to no end that the GOP is destroying itself from the inside out via creationism, birth certificate conspiracy theories, and intolerance. If this stuff continues, we'll be living under the liberal boot for a long time to come.

And this is not all good. Crowley says on the police report the 911 caller mentioned race, on the 911 call, she doesn't and CNN is already spinning this as something is wrong, that Crowley has a credibility problem.

Of course, it could be taken both ways, Crowley is simply filling in the details AFTER the fact on the police report, which is common practice.

I haven't read the police report. Did Crowley write that she mentioned "black" in terms of race? She did, in fact, mention race, but not "black".

The only reason I originally started reading LGF is because I'm a Zionist.

I find it rather disingenuous of those who act as if there is no substance to the 'birthers' profound suspicion that our 'dear leader' is hiding something.
The issue of attending college in the US as a foreign student under scholarship only available to non US citizens is at least embarrassing if not fraud.

Circulating via email, a purported AP news story claims transcripts released by Occidental College prove that Barack Obama, under the name 'Barry Soetoro,' received a Fulbright Scholarship awarded to foreign-born students only.

Analysis: Hoax!

Did Obama attend Occidental under the name "Barry Soetoro"?

No. Soetoro was the name of Obama's stepfather, but there's no evidence he attended college under that name. Fellow alumni quoted in the press remember him as "Barry Obama." An Occidental College spokesperson told FactCheck.org there are no records showing that Obama used his stepfather's last name.

Did Obama attend Occidental under a Fulbright Scholarship for Foreign Students?

No. According to various news sources, Obama did attend Occidental on a scholarship, but it wasn't a Fulbright, let alone a Fulbright Scholarship designated for foreign students. The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is for Master's Degree and Ph.D. candidates. Obama was an undergraduate.

I see the parallels, and agree that this may be playing a part in the continued life of this demand as well. However, I see a difference: 0 has already produced a birth certificate (there are scans of it littering the web) and his possession of a driver's license, SS number and so on implies it's veracity; the state of Hawaii has also stood behind his citizenship. This matter is settled, and pursuing it is pointless. The demand for a transcript, on the other hand, is familiar to anyone who has applied for a job, where failure to produce it is a guarantee of derailment. And unlike the birth certificate nonsense, which is a binary issue (it exists or it doesn't) it isn't the existence of a transcript that's in question, it's the contents, which vary greatly from student to student and which contain interesting details on that person's abilities, as discussed earlier.

All that being said, I don't think it's worth any sort of rabid attention. Just tossing the fact that 0 doesn't want anyone to see how he did in school out there ought to be sufficient to achieve it's political purpose.

And for what it's worth: I would bet heavy money that every single one of 0's nominees for Administration posts was required to produce their college transcripts.

re: #223 Buck

Do you have the link for that so I can whip it out when I need to whip it out?

re: #177 Last Mohican

Crowley says in the police report that the caller mentioned race to him when they spoke in person, on the street. So these newly published tapes won't speak to that.

It seems odd that she would have said this in person. In the 911 call, she says that she couldn't tell what race the two men were, but that one might be Hispanic. They were already in the house at that point (or, at least, Gates was), so she wouldn't have seen him again before speaking to Crowley.

At the risk of reviving a disagreement from an old thread, I'm going to revive it. What you write is bullshit. It has become standard practice for presidential candidates to release their university transcripts, tax returns, and often medical records. Wanting to see Obama's transcripts is not racist. It's just not.

Wanting to see them now is bullshit.

Let's imagine what would happen if he released them. This isn't about determining if he really got the degree or the grades. He did. That isn't in dispute.

This is about having a little witchhunt to say, "OMG this professor he took a class with one time co-authored a book years before with a COMMIE!"
Or, "OMG! He took this one class with 50 people in it and this one classmate went on to PRISON!"

It would literally never end. And it's insane. Look at the classes you took at university. How many of them were because it fit your schedule, or it was a requirement, or this really cute girl (or boy) was taking it?

He's right not to release it, because at bottom this is all about Fear of a Barack Planet.

As GOP Rep. Mike Castle learned the hard way back home in Delaware this month, there’s no easy way to deal with the small but vocal crowd of right-wing activists who refuse to believe that President Barack Obama was born in the United States.

At a town hall meeting in Georgetown, a woman demanded to know why Castle and his colleagues were “ignoring” questions about Obama’s birth certificate — questions that have been put to rest repeatedly by state officials in Hawaii, where the birth certificate and all other credible evidence show that Obama was born in Honolulu on Aug. 4, 1961.

When Castle countered that Obama is, in fact, “a citizen of the United States,” the crowd erupted in boos, the woman seized control of the gathering and led a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. The video went viral; by Sunday, it had been viewed on YouTube more than half a million times.

And birthers say members should expect more of the same in the coming weeks.

Demonization stops that dead in its tracks. It makes the user feel better to get it off their chest, but does nothing to progress conversation. But people who demonize don't won't conversation. You're a smart woman. You don't get because you don't want to.

Charles changed the tag on this blog to say "Weblog covering issues dear to both conservatives and US liberals." By that I think he would like to see this blog as a meeting place where two groups of people can actually have meaningful conversations about things that mean a great deal to the both of us. Demonization stops that dead in its tracks. It makes the user feel better to get it off their chest, but does nothing to progress conversation. But people who demonize don't won't conversation. Because if so, they'd eventually have to admit their own faults. It's much easier to call someone a Commie. Then they have an excuse not to talk to evil.

Anyway, never mind about it. It doesn't matter. I'll leave.

Right, and guess what, we are adults, we argue, we pontificate, we make noise, we have strong opinions, we make mistakes, we curse, we cajole, we insult, we make jokes, and we walk away like GROWN men and woman (and a occasional lizard) and we don't WHINE about having a point of view that we want to discuss.

Sarah Palin: "U.S. outsources jobs, industry; this must be turned around for nation's survival by: Buy American/produce domestically/encourage competition."

Sarah Palin: "No time to waste: teach US youth to avoid idleness; they can lead new American Industrial Revolution w/WORK & embrace "Buy American" mission."

She sounds like Pat Buchanan, isolationist, populist, xenophobic, and a moonbat to boot. "Buy American" is such an anti-American concept! Has she ever heard of the mutual gains from free trade? She must thing commerce is a zero-sum game -- a most tribal mentality that ultimately feeds the motivations of every socialist and statist out there.

All this tripe is of course replete with the obligatory Apocalyptic scenarios so dear to the paleocon's hearts: "You must do as I say for nation's survival."

I knew that's all Palin was about as soon as I hear her "greed on Wall Street" remarks at the VP debate last year. This woman is such an embarrassment it makes me blush, and her having made it so far in politics betrays a powerful current of sexism in this country.

Sabra

Sabra (person)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For other uses, see Sabra.
Sabra (Hebrew: צבר‎) is a term used to describe a person born in Israel.[1] In contrast, an oleh (masculine) or olah (feminine) is a person who immigrates to Israel[2] under Aliyah.
The word sabra derived from the Hebrew name for the Indian Fig Opuntia cactus, "tzabar," and related to the Arabic word for aloe/cactus, "sabr," which means patience.[3] The allusion is to a tenacious, thorny desert plant with a thick hide that conceals a sweet, softer interior, i.e., rough and masculine on the outside, but delicate and sensitive on the inside. The first use of the word to describe native-born Israelis is claimed by the journalist Uri Kesari, who published an essay, "We Are the Leaves of the Sabra!", in Doar HaYom on 18 April 1931.[4]
The sociological characteristics of the sabra were examined by Oz Almog in his book "The Sabra - The Creation of the New Jew."[5]
In the 1980's, when television in Israel was still black and white and aired several hours a day, the Israeli children's show, Ma Pit'om ("What on earth?" or "You don't say!," מה פתאום) featured as its star the talking cactus Kishkashta; Kishkashta was a Sesame Street-style felt puppet who introduced himself with a solitary song.
The "sabr" is also a national symbol for Bedouins. In their folklore it is also known as a symbol of patience and perseverance.[6]

By that I mean, try to bring up the subject first and ask your representative what he's doing to prevent non-issues like the birth certificate from interfering with the real work of blocking Obama's agenda in Congress. Bring your video camera, just like the nirthers. If your Congressman hems and haws, you know you need a new candidate. If he gives you a straight answer, and the nirthers go bonkers, up they go on You Tube in all their moronic glory.

We have a responsibility to stand up, shine a bright light on the nutters in the conservative movement / GOP - and boot them out just as Buckeley did when he confronted the Birchers who were tainting conservatism 40 years ago. If we don't, we hand our opponents a cudgel that they will only too happily take to us ensuring their continued electoral success as we will be painted and defined by association as kooks who aren't responsible enough for power.

Nirtherism is no different from trooferism or even the whackos who continue to bleat about Florida in 2000 - it is an embracement of the derangement syndrome we ridiculed for years. Becoming our enemy is not the way to win and we don't get the pass that they do for their looniness.

The way to fight the President's agenda and actions is to over a better vision, direction, and solution and articulate the superiority of it. Show, using facts, the damage being done to the economy, the damage that will be done to the economy, by the irresponsible spending and other programs he is advocating. We don't do this by whinging about a trumped up issue created by kranks (WND) who can't offer a cogent alternative.

Sarah Palin is insane and embarrassing. Let the down-dings begin.

re: #303 unrealizedviewpoint

Talk about hate. Wow!

Talk about what? Sarah Palin thinks she's qualified to run this country, but can't stick out a term as governor in Alaska. Hence, insane.

Sarah Palin can't string together a coherent sentence. She just drivels on, tossing in emotive buzzwords like "our soldiers" and "it's about country" and capitalizing random words and putting in exclamation points like a pre-teen on a texting binge. Ergo, embarrassing.

In her final speech today: "Yes, America must look north to the future for security, for energy independence, for our strategic location on the globe. Alaska is the gate-keeper of the continent." [Which is why I'm stepping down and turning my back on the people who elected me, because, uh, I must look south to the future of my book deals and talk shows and my strategic location in your head. I did wonder about that, but didn't go back to watch a second time.

It was near-parallel, side-to-side, which undoubtedly took off fittings, and possibly sprang leaks in the hull plating (opening welded seams.)

What was "close" was a bow-on collision. That was a near thing.

Would they do this to a different candidate, say Hillary Clinton or John McCain?

Sorry that The Kid saw it killed. Or you for that matter. But feral pigs are a big problem.

In general, feral pigs can adapt to almost any kind of habitat. However, in other states, they tend to inhabit swamps, brushlands, woodlands, mountain forests and woodlands near agricultural fields.

Threats to Wisconsin
The existence of feral pigs in Wisconsin raises many issues. The DNR and most Wisconsin hunters oppose the existence and spread of feral pigs because these animals not only compete with our native white-tailed deer but they have also been associated with the local population declines of quail and wild turkey in other states.

In addition, feral pigs can transmit diseases and parasites to livestock and people. Farmers are especially worried about the potential spread of exotic diseases to their domestic livestock. Of primary concern are diseases such as pseudorabies, brucellosis and tuberculosis. Many farmers are also troubled by potential crop losses. As mentioned above, feral pigs can be extremely destructive to recently planted fields and can damage pastures, facilities and fences, resulting in serious financial losses. Wallows can affect ponds and wetlands by muddying the water, creating algae blooms, destroying aquatic vegetation and lowering overall water quality. Digging and rooting activity of feral pigs near a watercourse leads to bank erosion. All of this activity can lead to decreased livestock use and poor fish production. Officials in other countries have reported feral pigs killing lambs and other domestic stock.

Due to feral pigs' tramping and rooting behaviors, Wisconsin's and other state's wildlife biologists are becoming increasingly concerned about the devastation these exotic animals can cause to ecologically sensitive native habitats, particularly native plants and rare, threatened or endangered species. These biologists are beginning to document the population declines that feral pigs are inflicting on grassland birds, wetland wildlife, and various small mammals.

What's the point of pushing for more math and science education in this country, if there's not going to be any jobs for them?

Much of my work is already going overseas (IT consulting to India), but I'm firmly in the globalization camp. Someone has to invent and design the stuff China makes for us and they do it cheaper (and, unfortunately, sometimes less well). Where it works well, it raises our overall standard of living... like Walmart entering a community.

It's a nice idea if you believe that increasing or decreasing taxes has a direct one-for-one effect on revenues. I don't think evidence will bear that out. Art Laffer has done a lot of work on this. To my knowledge, we've never found the peak of the Laffer curve (the marginal tax rate where any change would cause revenues to drop)... always been on the high side. That says that much lower tax rates could increase revenues substantially.

The only reason I originally started reading LGF is because I'm a Zionist.

So, you say that the dems are not ALL represented by Code Pink. That is true.
But, because some reps are "nirthers" you have tarred the entire party as "backward".
In what warped reality were you planning on joining the Republican party? I find that pretty hard to believe.

re: #429 eschew_obfuscation

It's a nice idea if you believe that increasing or decreasing taxes has a direct one-for-one effect on revenues. I don't think evidence will bear that out. Art Laffer has done a lot of work on this. To my knowledge, we've never found the peak of the Laffer curve (the marginal tax rate where any change would cause revenues to drop)... always been on the high side. That says that much lower tax rates could increase revenues substantially.

John Kennedy and Ronald Reagan demonstrated this - and even they never tested the low end limits, so I'm with ya on the reference to Art Laffer - I think he's got it right.

This woman is such an embarrassment it makes me blush, and her having made it so far in politics betrays a powerful current of sexism in this country.

Would you elaborate? I don't get it.

Sure thing, though I thought in the context, what I meant was pretty self-explanatory. Sarah Palin clearly has got shit for brains. She not only isn't sufficiently educated on the issues -- economics, finance, diplomacy, foreign policy, and apparently, basic geography -- she does not even sound intelligent enough to be able to learn, or, failing that, to credibly fake some sort of competence. If she looked like Maggie Thatcher but sounded as she does, no one would give her the time of day.

But because she's miss former beauty-queen runnerup in slutty flight attendant's wardrobe, people, especially of the straight male orientation, tend to overlook how stupid, insane, and embarrassing she is. Far from her gender hurting her chances due to any "misogyny" prevalent in this country, her gender and the way she carries it has been her only redeeming feature, allowing her to make it this far, when a man or old/ugly woman of the same intellectual caliber wouldn't have had a chance.

The point of pay-go was to make Congress consider their spending habits. I support this. I'd prefer other mechanisms, but this isn't bad policy. The point of it is to keep Congress out of deficit spending. If we want to claim to be the party of fiscal responsibility- we should support this measure.

No...the point of Pay-Go is to increase your taxes. The measures the dems want will be passed one way or the other... with Pay-Go do you really believe something will be cut somewhere as an offset?

What the Democrats are doing is the equivalent of impaling their defeated enemies at the border, especially turncoats who were trying to escape.

They will commit any media atrocity necessary in order to hammer home the point that nobody except for white men get out of the Democrat party alive. Should it become acceptable for women and minorities to succeed as Republicans, the sun will set on the Democrats. They're not dumb. Palin must be flensed as Clarence Thomas was.

re: #345 ArchangelMichael

If this is true and goes the direction I think it is, its the next step to her going Paulian which I fear is where she is headed.

Having a complete but unrealized ignorance in capitalism and globalization, and preaching moving backwards to having everyone work in factories again is a plank on the "Put us on the gold standard" platform.

Bad news, really bad news. Please say it is not so Sarah.

She is a paleo-con at heart; of that I have no doubt. But she's of the Pat Buchanan as opposed to Ron Paul variety. To the uninitiated there is little if any difference between the two, but if you dig a little deeper, you'd find out that the Ron Paul and Pat Buchanan form separate tributaries of the paleocon stream of thought. Where they unite in is isolationism and non-interventionism. But Ron Paul and his brand of weirdos are radically pro free-trade and anti-protectionism; they are also anarchists who are obsessed with, as I've been repeating ad nauseam and as Charles recently confirmed, Illuminati/New World Order/Freemason conspiracy theories. Their anti-Federal-Reservo/pro-Gold-Standard hot buttons are motivated by these lunatic conspiracies about bankers controlling the world. Anti-trade sentiment is not part of their craziness.

The Buchananites are anti-intervention not because they're anarchists, but rather because intervention, by the USA, has historically been waged on behalf of the good guys and against Nazis and authoritarians. Buchanan really is itching to say we should have never fought Hitler; we should have been allies with him. He maintains the same attitude toward the intervention against Serbia. He sympathizes with all the parties we have intervened against, hence his ostensible non-interventionist position. He doesn't care about the Gold Standard and is isolationist in an economic, protectionist sense, unlike the Paulians, because he is a tribalist who doesn't understand the basics of free market economics.

Murray Rothbard united these two streams of thought toward shared goals, but they are not interchangeable.

She is obviously incoherent, and picks up memes and logos from all directions, trying to merge them into some pastiche that will make her stand out. But if not intellectually, the alignment happens instinctively. She is a populist, as are almost all anti-intellectual politicians who are infatuated with a sense of their own charisma. I don't down ding, but I see you do. I don't down ding because 1) it's easy and 2) you would not know why I did. You down dinged my response to your spew rather than coming back with a rational response to support your spew.

And Jimmah, same to you.

In all fairness the post of yours in question wasn't exactly spilling over with rationality was it? When someone makes what I see as an unfair, unreasoned jab like that I'm inclined to downding it.

PS I also upding. Get used to it.

That's great about your ISP. My other issue with Firefox is that it crashes at least once a day for no apparent reason. My husband thought it might be competing antivirus software packages, so he removed all but Norton. It helped some but I still experience more crashes than I should.

I am glad to see I'm not the only one having theis problem with firefox - I was beginning to wonder if I had some sort of malware on my machine. I think I'm going to try 'safari' - see how that goes.

I mostly agree, but keep in mind her personal legal bills are now over $500,000. Alaska doesn't pay to defend all of the ethics suits that have been brought... that's all on her personally while governor. I couldn't support that kind of debt.

I hadn't known that. We need loser pays tort reform in this country.

re: #503 iceweasel

The main portion of the cost was due to a suit Palin insisted on bringing. 2/3rds of the cost is due to the TrooperGate crap. That's a suit she brought.

And the cost isn't 500K. Not unless you add in the hours worked by all the state's lawyers--- and those are hours they were already being paid for.

Looks like it might be higher than $500,000 ... that appears to have resulted from ethics complaints.

re: #495 medaura18586

Most of her sentences lack basic grammar cogency.

Not at all. What the philistine media refuse to recognise is that Palin is a visionary, a poet. Here is the gorgeous, perfervid vision of her Couric interview:

Behold the brilliance of On the Bailout

Ultimately,
What the bailout does
Is help those who are concerned
About the health care reform
That is needed
To help shore up our economy,
Helping the--
It's got to be all about job creation, too.

Shoring up our economy
And putting it back on the right track.
So health care reform
And reducing taxes
And reining in spending
Has got to accompany tax reductions
And tax relief for Americans.
And trade.

We've got to see trade
As opportunity
Not as a competitive, scary thing.
But one in five jobs
Being created in the trade sector today,
We've got to look at that
As more opportunity.
All those things.

re: #161 American Sabra

The only reason I originally started reading LGF is because I'm a Zionist.

Of course, backwardness is relative.

You said that the three things most important to you were Family, Health and Job. Your top three political priorities were Israel/Zionism, Women's Rights issues, and a lukewarm hankering for immigration reform.

I posed three questions to you. Have you had any interesting thoughts along those lines?

I do believe that you are a conservative, you see.

Nevermind the fact that most of your (stated) personal and political concerns are so much dust in the wind given enough of the current administration. That's the low-hanging fruit in this argument, and the backwardness of the Democrats at any rate. The pattern behind your priorities is what is more informative, as it is for limited scope, observable, achievable (or huggable) things.

Your incipient conservatism will grow from your constrained vision.

I think that the reason you are uncomfortable with the left is their pie-in-the-sky rhetoric, with you being one of those who looks at a man's cheap shoes when he directs our gaze to the heavens. I also think that you are incredibly conflicted about shifting sides (or recognizing an ongoing shift which you may not fully logically control), and are somewhat motivated to provoke a response. Fair enough--a ship making no progress also induces no drag.

And what better time to have an impact on a party that is in SERIOUS trouble, than when it is in serious trouble? Look at all of Charles' hard work at exposing the shambling, rotting horrors in our midst. No brains and all "BRAINSSS!"

The Republican Party is composed of three segments--the fiscal responsibility/small government segment, the strong military/muscular foreign policy segment, and the traditional morès/religious right segment. There's a lot of overlap and more than a little conflict between these segments. Make of it what you will. You could say that the party is in a "teachable moment".

It's okay--we'll be here whenever you arrive.

You are therefore prepared to state that every man of any age, and old or "radio-looks" woman has been more intelligent and well-spoken than Sarah Palin?

Interesting. I suppose that the old-boy cabal in Alaska decided to surrender because she is attractive? Or is it that a whopping majority of Alaskans are blinded by lust, men and women alike?

re: #495 medaura18586

I don't think she has any intellectual self-awareness either. Not like she's given any thought to these political alignments and chosen based on the dictates of her conscience. So populist messages will appeal to her, and she'll be a good match for. Not that I believe she knows what the hell she is talking about at any given moment.

I did not say that at all. If my straightforward arguments are challenging your reading comprehension skills, you may want to stay out of the fray. What I did say is that any man or ugly/old woman with Sarah Palin's brains would have never had a chance in national, possibly not even regional, politics.

Interesting. I suppose that the old-boy cabal in Alaska decided to surrender because she is attractive? Or is it that a whopping majority of Alaskans are blinded by lust, men and women alike?

No, I did not say that either. "The old-boy cabal" is a media invention fabricated to make Sarah Palin sound like a revolutionary hero fighting the good fight. I don't see any empirical grounding of it in reality. Men and women have different reasons for giving special, favorable treatment to Sarah Palin. With many women it's about gender/identity politics. She has even exploited another niche market in identity politics: redneck and rural America. "Oh, she says doggone it and goshdarn it, and she's a soccer mom. She's one of us."

So, you say that the dems are not ALL represented by Code Pink. That is true.
But, because some reps are "nirthers" you have tarred the entire party as "backward".
In what warped reality were you planning on joining the Republican party? I find that pretty hard to believe.

Years ago, probably before the election or the picking of candidates I became very disenfranchised with the Democratic party and I considered switching teams. Instead, I registered as Independent more as a protest to the Left than any real affirmation of anything (which is probably pretty dumb... who am I hurting?). I started seeing the Right differently than I had before. I realized that both sides want the same things. Good education for the kids, low taxes, good (or simply existent) job opportunities, affordable housing, on and on. We're not so different. But we are definitely different about some specific things. Abortion, evolution, off the top of my head, the two biggies, there are other issues that I really would not feel comfortable as a Republican. To me, the Right viewpoint on some key issues represents backward thinking.

I have seen it all when it comes to irrational Palin identification, cult personality, and apologetics. Her national campaign began last year; anyone who was born and conscious by then with eyes to see, ears to hear, and a brain in his/her skull, could see it all.

But don't let that stop you from twisting my words.

Anyone who would spend the time and energy attacking Sarah Palin as you have needs assistance. If you've read my words you know I'm no fan of Palin. I could care less about her. You though care. You are fixated on Sarah to the point of it being your obsession. Help is available.

This denial is remarkably similar to other denials I've heard from editors and publishers in the newpaper industry - despite their enrapture with progressives, history of donating and voting for the left, and haughty indignation when confronted by those from outside the echo chamber they usually inhabit - they continue to insist others ignore their actions and statements as they are not biased at all compared to their friends and co-workers. Oh, and it's apparent you are a liberal. Who the hell do you think you're lying to?

And what the fuck exactly is wrong with being a classical John Stuart Millian liberal, may I ask? A helluva lot less than being a theocratic neanderthal socon, I'll wager.

When you say liberal, you mean communist/socialist leftist, but they're not the same thing - not even close. The very word 'liberal' has as its root the word 'liberty' (which is why libertarians have also appropriated a derivation), and they're all about maximizing personal freedoms; leftists, otoh, have yet to meet a totalitarianism or a theocracy in which they are not enthralled, provided that it is anti-american. And socons wish to institute their own fucking version of sharia and force everybody to make the moral choices that they prefer.

Likewise, a Edmund Burkean classical conservative has nothing whatsoever to do with being fascist right. For either liberals or conservatives to consider themselves to be either communist leftists or fascist rightists is to misconstrue, betray and damage their own movements; for either side to address the other by such epithets is to commit a lying slander.

Reagan read poetry. Used it in one of the most touching speeches he gave. Columbia explosion.
The poem was written by John Gillespie Magee, Jr
High Flight
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air...
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor even eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

I have read the book "Dear Americans" by Ralph E Weber who compiled Reagan's constant letter writing.

You say, "Politicians have not been writing their own speeches since possibly Abe Lincoln's days." Who ever told you that is as ignorant of history as you are.

The only argument you've put forth is that only Palin's boobs got her the job, nay, the application for the job, and offer as proof, the claim that a man, or woman of lesser calibre brassiere, yet similar brains would have been laughed out of the room.

Since she's certainly one of the most attractive women to become well-known in politics in recent times, it should be safe to re-state your argument such that every man and not-so-attractive woman who has run for or gained office in recent history is or was smarter, smoother, or in some other way better than Sarah Palin.

She therefore represents the absolute floor, the saddest of all successful politicians. The Double D minor.

This is your argument. The rest has been sniping. Pretty weak.

Don't, by any means, bother to inquire the name, mission, or political alignment of the publication I happen to work for. How germane to the applicability of your screed could such a trifle detail possibly be?

Don't even think of checking my comments' archive or the political positions outlined on my about-me page.

Bulls eye! You got me! How will I manage to hide my leftist bias now that you exposed me? Because anyone who doesn't think Sarah Palin is the best thing since sliced bread betrays their inner crypto-Leftist.

613 kynna  Mon, Jul 27, 2009 2:56:13pm

You know, regarding the video, I do with Palin had answered that bombing any facility is a kind of terrorism. But I think she comprehended (and if you listen to Williams's acrobatically worded question you'll probably get it too) that he was trying to detour the subject from Barack Obama's friend's history and support of domestic terrorism, to something more vague and unspecific. The point of calling Obama out on Ayers was Ayers and his admitted goal of bringing down the country. Williams is trying to obfuscate that point and he succeeded.

But she definitely could have called them both terrorism and it would probably have helped her get back to the subject of Ayers's goals and his relationship with Obama.

BTW -- I think it's pretty clear that Palin doesn't endorse bombings of abortion clinics. I'd be interested to to hear her take on that exchange in a non-hostile interview.

BTW2 -- PJTV has a really good Bill Whittle rant about Palin hate today. He cracks me up. XD

I had to come back after I read those articles. They're opinion pieces that don't actually contain facts. The Chapman piece actually claims Palin added nothing to the ticket which is a stupid meme since the polls show exactly when McCain started to rise (Palin choice) and when he started to fall again (economy), so we know where that guy's coming from.

I admit, I've been quick to defend Palin. I haven't found the substance in her detractor's arguments. And I hate to see people maligned with terms like "insane" when it's wholly unjustified. She resigned as governor. Yeah, I can understand it since I don't have $500,00 to lend her to fight off the harassing investigations. Crazy!! Some of us just don't want to go into bankruptcy after we've achieved our goals and we can leave our ally in a successor position. Madness!

I'm a fan of Reason Magazine, too, but those pieces are nothing more than opinion columns written by people who never liked her in the first place. And they don't give any factual evidence to follow the Palin = bimbo crowd.

I will have to admit that Palin, while espousing, or at least not distancing, from some red meat socon positions, nevertheless governed Alaska as an undogmatic personal freedom libertarian. Reagan did much the same thing. Unfortunately, after his signing of a Disco-Institute-drafter creationism-in-public-schools bill, I cannot say the same for Jindal.

Bill Clinton, too, was financially dogged by expensive lawsuit bills. But he waited until the end of his term to fundraise and pay them off. The fact that Palin wouldn't do so for her last 18 months will prove disastrous for any subsequent presidential bid by her - and should.

Guess I'll have to admit being a Palin fan, since I'm one of those redneck hillbillies who don't know better and can't conjugate verbs properly, and didn't go to Harvard, and and don't frequent the correct social strata. Apparently espousing the values she proclaims is no longer in fashion.

So have fun with the bashing, Palin haters--all the while secretly knowing she has more class in her little finger than y'all possess collectively.

Yes, it's logical that if you denigrate libertarianism, that you embrace its political opposite. And its political opposite is authoritarianism.

re: #635 Salamantis

A friend of mine, who has a PhD in the history of ideas, gave me the best thumbnail definition of populist that I know: a racist progressive.

Sal: Great definition. I'll have to remember that.

Sure enough, except for his racism (big "except," right?), Wallace was actually a pretty progressive governor. He created a thriving junior college system in the state, and was instrumental in helping make Birmingham an international player in medical research, after his first wife developed cancer.

I'm convinced that he was not a "true" racist, whatever that means, but opportunistically chose that path because it's where the votes were. Didn't make him any less dangerous. It's a politician's policies we have to live with, not their "hearts" or "inner selves."

End of my sermon, for now. :)

I personally like Palin, and she is indeed waay hott. I wouldn't mind sharing a case of beer in an ice-fishing cabin with her for a weekend.

That doesn't mean that I view her as qualified to be POTUS. And the fact that I DON'T view her as qualified to be POTUS doesn't mean that I DO view Obama as qualified to be POTUS (I don't).

I liked her as a VP candidate simply for the mid American values she brought to the ticket...WOOPS!...in the aftermath it's obvious she is not presidential...after all she has been through I don't blame her for leaving office but she is even less presidential for it...I agree with you there...if she becomes a conservative liability when the rubber hits the road then you can smack me for letting it go back then (now)...I'm a simple hayseed and she has taken herself out of it...if she rebounds then you can say I told you so...at this point she is a media driven non person

Yeah; the latter designates the former. Or else definition, and language, possess no human meaning.

Agreed on all points, actually. I can't for the life of me figure out why Medaura18586 let herself get so non-linear about Palin. Un-hinged.

The thing that bothers me about her is the same thing that bothers me about you. That smug, haughty, condescending [reaches for thesaurus] arrogant, conceited, self-important, self-righteous, bigheaded, egotistical, vain, self-satisfied, overbearing, superior, pompous tone that just, for some reason, doesn't do it for me.

And when you get busted in a fallacy, you try to wriggle off the hook. It's the antithesis of integrity and reason. You're both smart, but you're both counterfeit.

I don't think she's going for the presidency. But I agree, I think her resignation will be a deal breaker for most. My hope is that she uses her ability to draw a crowd to gain attention for fiscal conservatives. She doesn't have much time for old boy networks and that's exactly what we have in both parties. Which is another reason why I can't understand "moderates'" immediate hatred of her, when there really isn't anything all that substantive to back it up.

I still don't blame her for leaving since she'd accomplished what she'd wanted to. It would have been nice for her to ride out the term, but that should actually make her haters very happy. Instead they're angrier than ever.

I disagree. Medaura isn't smart at all -- only smug. Salamantis is very smart, even when I disagree with him. And willing to debate honestly which Medaura also is not. I was actually surprised by the vitriol aimed in Sal's direction.

Ditto. I thought she was good for the ticket, but not particularly strong on a national level in her own right. A few wheels came off the Palin car as time went by, but everybody has bad months and worse, and then she quit. I support her so long as she stays quit, as her reasons only stay true so long as she's out.

If that makes sense.

That makes absolute sense and I agree. But, as I've said, she may be able to help guide the spotlight a little bit, particularly away from the entrenched and corrupt in the party. I'd like to see that kind of thing now more than ever and it seems to be one of her 'things'.

What about ten or twelve years down the road, though? Does she have to stay quit for the rest of her life for her reasons to be 'true'?

re: #517 haakondahl

I know it's a dead thread, but I promised to respond.

I was in a political identity crisis for years. The traditional labels stopped fitting. For me, it started at 9/11 when I began supporting the Right and stuck by it for years, but that's really been the only link for me. The foreign policy segment you mentioned.

I think a lot of those traditional labels started to shake for a lot of people years ago. I don't know. I think it came to a head when Bush's ratings started to drop. And it's always tougher for the party that loses the election. I wonder how much wound licking is still going on with the GOP now or if that typically is supposed to resolve already. I should have studied poli sci.

Anyway, I don't feel that tie to the Democrats like I had. It's like becoming friends with an old lover that lies to you. Dinner maybe, a few laughs, but I'm bringing my car and driving home afterward. I mean, I still support social causes typically supported by the Left, but there's distance now.

Does that address your statements? I'm not sure what it has to do with demonizing someone.

You haven't caught me in a single fallacy. I have upon occasion made mistakes in my posts, but when they actually ARE mistakes, I am quick to acknowledge them. Most of the time, however, as on this thread, they AREN'T mistakes.

I have no problem acknowledging actual mistakes I make, but I refuse to admit to mistakes I did not make just to fucking please you.

To be alliterative about it, the smug, snide, snotty, sneering superciliousness all seems to be coming from you. And completely and totaolly without merit, I might add.

664 elcaro  Tue, Jul 28, 2009 4:14:16am

Palin already commented on the Tiller murder through her PAC... Just because she doesn't answer every question in the way you judge would be best to answer the question doesn't mean she supports the murder of Tiller. It also has nothing to do with conspiracy theories... You might as well also bring up that she supports ID, since you missed a few other irrelevant points. Whatever...

The site is so worried about the fringes lately, that it is getting more and more irrelevant each day. Let's talk about every lunatic so we can paint a broad brush over the entire GOP/Conservative movement!!! As if people like Sarah Palin are the principal problems with this country, not the folks who have been in Washington for the last few years or the last few decades.
